Anti-vaxxers are now a modern political force

This is the final story of a five-part series diving into the rise of the anti-vaccine political movement.

For years, groups at the vanguard of the anti-vaccine movement had been operating with relatively small budgets and only a handful of staff.

Now, they’re awash in cash.

The Covid-19 pandemic has produced a remarkable financial windfall for anti-vaccine nonprofits. Revenue more than doubled for the Informed Consent Action Network and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Children’s Health Defense in 2021 compared to the year prior, according to a POLITICO analysis of tax filings. The nonprofits that survived on operating budgets of around a few million dollars just a few years prior are now raking in more than $10 million each.

“Covid vaccines have been the foot in the door for the more general anti-vaccine movement. And unfortunately, that door is open pretty wide now,” said Dr. Dave Gorski, a Michigan-based oncologist who has been tracking anti-vaccine efforts for two decades.

The funding spike reflects a sea change for once-fringe entities. The anti-vaccine movement has now emerged as a modern political force. In practical terms, greater funds enable anti-vaccine groups to expand their public reach, sue federal agencies and organize like-minded activists at the state level, as well as expand their reach abroad.

Though these groups have been trying to roll back vaccine requirements for years, the movement has gained new traction in a post-pandemic world. Earlier this year, a lawsuit funded by the anti-vaccine group Informed Consent Action Network forced Mississippi to allow religious exemptions for mandatory childhood vaccinations for the first time in more than four decades.

That case, perhaps the greatest policy achievement for the movement to loosen vaccine requirements in schools or workplaces, alarmed public health experts. Depressed vaccination rates have led to more deaths from Covid-19, and have the potential to enable the return of potentially fatal childhood diseases such as measles.

Informed Consent Action Network was among the most well-funded groups in the anti-vaccine movement prior to the pandemic. The nonprofit was pulling in $1.4 million in 2017. By 2021, its annual revenue topped $13.3 million, according to tax documents.

The group’s founder, Del Bigtree, hosts a podcast, The HighWire, where he discusses the group’s work. During the pandemic, the show released near-daily episodes, where Bigtree criticized lockdowns and masks, touted unproven treatments such as the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine and questioned the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines.

Bigtree told POLITICO that his audience grew over the pandemic, from thousands of weekly listeners to millions. “The pandemic in many ways played right into our conversation,” he said.

The growth came despite major distribution platforms such as Facebook and YouTube removing The Highwire, citing misinformation policies.

It also brought in a rush of grassroots giving. Bigtree said smaller, recurring donors now account for a large share of the group’s funding. Most of the donations to the Informed Consent Action Network documented in tax documents are through donor-advised funds, a setup often used by wealthy benefactors to keep their identities private.

The group was not alone in its pandemic-era growth. A longtime anti-vaccine group Children’s Health Defense, the nonprofit launched in 2011 under the name World Mercury Project, also saw its revenue balloon. The group, which is led by longshot Democratic presidential candidate Kennedy, saw its revenue go from just over $1 million in 2018 to more than $15 million in 2021, according to the nonprofit’s federal tax filings.

Those figures do not include smaller state chapters of the group, most of which have launched since 2020. (The largest of the subgroups, a California chapter, reported $1.2 million in revenue in 2021.)

As the nonprofit’s revenue increased, so did Kennedy’s compensation. Children’s Health Defense paid him roughly $500,000 each year in 2022 and 2021, according to his personal financial disclosure and the group’s tax filings, up from $345,000 in 2020 and $131,000 in 2017. The nonprofit salary was still a small share of Kennedy’s overall income; his personal financial disclosure filed as part of his presidential run reported $7.8 million in earnings in 2022, with the bulk of that coming from his work for his environmental law firm.

Kennedy’s presidential campaign referred questions back to Children’s Health Defense, but the nonprofit did not respond to several messages and a list of questions via email.

Unlike political committees, nonprofits are largely not required to reveal their sources of funding, or as many details of how they spend their money. Tax filings occasionally reveal contributions from other foundations or grants given by the groups, but much of their finances are shrouded in secrecy.

Still, some of the effects of the increased revenue are clear in the group’s public activities. Bigtree said Informed Consent Action Network had been able to hire more lawyers and scientists, with its staff more than doubling compared to pre-pandemic levels. Children’s Health Defense has expanded its operations into Europe, Canada and Australia, and begun translating some of its materials into languages including Spanish, French and Italian.

Both Children’s Health Defense and the Informed Consent Action Network have filed new lawsuits, Freedom of Information Act requests and petitions with agencies such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration. While the Mississippi lawsuit was a notable victory, many of the efforts, like a petition by the Informed Consent Action Network for the FDA to revoke approval of a version of the polio vaccine, stand little chance of success, said Dorit Reiss, a professor at the UC Hastings College of Law who specializes in vaccine law.

Canada under fire for applauding ‘literal Nazi’ in parliament during Zelenskyy visit

Commenters and Jewish groups demanded an apology

Fox News anchor Bret Baier looks at the investigations into the Chinese spy balloon that traversed across the continental U.S. in February and other objects that were shot down after on ‘Special Report.’

Canadian Jewish organizations and social media critics are slamming the Canadian Parliament for giving a man who fought for the Nazis a standing ovation during an event featuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the country.

“FSWC is appalled that Canada’s Parliament gave a standing ovation to a Ukrainian veteran who served in a Nazi military unit during the Second World War implicated in the mass murder of Jews and others. An apology and explanation is owed,” the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Canadian nonprofit dedicated to educating people on the Holocaust, wrote on X, previously known as Twitter.

Video and photos show the Canadian Parliament erupted into cheers on Friday during Zelenskyy’s visit to the country’s capital of Ottawa, when Canadian lawmakers also honored Yaroslav Hunka, a 98-year-old Ukrainian immigrant who fought for the First Ukrainian Division, according to the Toronto Star. That division was also known as the Waffen-SS Galicia Division, which fought for the Nazis as its paramilitary arm under the Schutzstaffel organization, according to the outlet.

“The fact that a veteran who served in a Nazi military unit was invited to and given a standing ovation in Parliament is shocking. At a time of rising antisemitism and Holocaust distortion, it is incredibly disturbing to see Canada’s Parliament rise to applaud an individual who was a member of a unit in the Waffen-SS, a Nazi military branch responsible for the murder of Jews and others and that was declared a criminal organization during the Nuremberg Trials,” the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center continued in their statement.

Social media commenters have joined the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center in condemning the Canadian House for celebrating Hunka, who some called a “literal Nazi” and “monster.”

Canadian columnist Joe Warmington called for a “full apology” “for celebrating a Second World War Nazi in the House of Commons,” in an op-ed published Sunday in the Toronto Sun.

Local Canadian outlets said the Associated Press identified the 98-year-old in a photo caption as a veteran of the “First Ukrainian Division in World War II,” and noted other outlets described the man as a Ukrainian immigrant to Canada who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians.

The Soviet Union played a pivotal role in defeating Nazi Germany, including during the Battle of Stalingrad, which marked a turning point in the war. The U.S. Department of State outlines on its website that “without the remarkable efforts of the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front, the United States and Great Britain would have been hard pressed to score a decisive military victory over Nazi Germany.”

Amid the political row over BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri’s derogatory remarks against Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) member Danish Ali in the Lok Sabha, the BJP and the Opposition INDIA bloc on Saturday engaged in a battle of letters on the sanctity of, and decorum in, Parliament.

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla raising several instances of “unsavoury remarks” that Opposition leaders had made in the House and sought the constitution of an “inquiry committee to investigate the utterances” during the discussion on Chandrayaan-3’s success. Dubey said the committee should look into “the extent of culpability” of MPs who “instigate other citizens” with their comments in the House.

Mexico on track to have its first Jewish, female president

The polls point to a historical first: Claudia Sheinbaum, currently the frontrunner, could become the country’s first Jewish and female president.

The way things stand now, Mexico is headed to elect its first woman president next year. The two leading candidates in the polls for the 2024 election are Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico City’s former mayor, and Xóchitl Gálvez, a senator representing the center-right opposition bloc.

The polls point to another first: Sheinbaum, currently the frontrunner, could become the country’s first Jewish president, too.

Earlier this month, Sheinbaum, 61, was announced as the candidate for the left-wing Morena party, which has been led by the country’s outgoing president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Since then, her momentum has only grown — a poll taken by the El Pais newspaper has 47% of voters supporting her, while Gálvez, her closest competitor, notched 30%.

If elected, Sheinbaum would join the ranks of the few Jews outside Israel who have been elected to their country’s highest office, including Janet Jagan of Guyana, Ricardo Maduro of Honduras, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski of Peru and Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine.

Here is a primer on Sheinbaum and how her Jewishness has become part of the campaign.

She is a Nobel Prize-winning scientist and political liberal who has beaten back crime.

Born to two science professors in Mexico City, Sheinbaum herself studied physics and became an engineering professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Her research focused on, among other things, energy usage in Mexico’s buildings and transportation system. Along with a group of other experts on the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, she would go on to win the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

As Mexico City’s head of government, Obrador appointed Sheinbaum as his environmental secretary in 2000. She became a close ally and joined his new left-wing Morena party (named after the country’s Catholic patron saint, the Virgin of Guadalupe) in the early 2010s. In 2015, she was elected mayor of Tlalpan, Mexico City’s largest borough, before becoming mayor of the entire city in 2018. She stepped down as mayor this summer to enter the presidential race.

Like the term-limited Obrador — whose approval rating of over 60% has been one of the highest in the world — Sheinbaum’s platform includes fighting Mexico’s deeply rooted corruption, continuing cash transfers to Mexico’s most vulnerable populations and developing Mexico’s energy sovereignty. But Sheinbaum will likely be more pro-environment than Obrador — while the current president has bolstered Mexico’s oil industry, Sheinbaum has said most of the country’s future “has to be related to renewable energy.”

As mayor of Mexico City, Sheinbaum led the city through the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic. While Obrador appeared to minimize the threat of the virus, Sheinbaum advocated for masks and increased testing early on. And in a country plagued by violence, she has reduced her city’s murder rate by nearly half.

But some controversy also brewed during her time as mayor. Despite expanding public transport, there were at least a dozen accidents, some deadly, in the city’s subway system. Critics say she hasn’t done enough to fix the city’s crumbling infrastructure.

Sheinbaum also faced controversy involving infrastructure disaster as head of Tlalpan. In 2017, during an earthquake that killed more than 300 people in total, an elementary school collapsed in Sheinbaum’s district, killing 19 children and six adults. An apartment had been built on top of the school, destabilizing it, and some criticized her for allowing district officials to approve the construction permits. She apologized for what happened, but some parents of the deceased children still hold her accountable.

Her Jewish identity is more political than religious
Sheinbaum had Ashkenazi grandparents who immigrated from Lithuania in the 1920s and Sephardic grandparents who left Sofia, Bulgaria, in the 1940s to escape the Holocaust. She has said that she celebrated holidays at her grandparents’ houses, but at home, her family life was secular.

Sources told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency in 2018 that Sheinbaum feels connected to the history of Jews in political activism, but not as much so to the religion or its traditions. Like many secular, leftist Jews in Mexico, her parents moved to the south of the city to be closer to the National Autonomous University of Mexico, a hotbed of political activism. She told a group of Jewish women voters during her mayoral campaign in 2018 that she was a proud Jewish woman.

She also hasn’t made any public pronouncement about Israel or spoken as a member of a minority, even though Jews make up less than 1% of the capital city’s population. It is not known if she belongs to any synagogue or other Jewish institution.

McCarthy opens impeachment inquiry into Biden without House vote

President Biden and Speaker McCarthy at the annual Friends of Ireland Luncheon on St. Patricks Day at the Capitol in March. Photo: Drew Angerer/Getty Images

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday announced he is directing a trio of House committees to open an impeachment inquiry into President Biden.

Why it matters: The unilateral move is an apparent reversal of McCarthy’s previous statement that a House vote would be held to launch such a probe.

  • It’s an escalation of the House Oversight and Judiciary Committee investigations into the business dealings of Biden’s son, Hunter.
  • Launching a formal probe gives Republicans added subpoena powers, McCarthy said in August.

What he’s saying: “Today, I am directing our House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden,” McCarthy said in a brief statement at the Capitol on Tuesday.

  • McCarthy said the inquiry is the “logical next step” that will “give our committees the full power to gather all the facts and answers for the American public.”
  • The speaker said the effort will be spearheaded by Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.), Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason Smith (R-Mo.).

Zoom in: It’s unclear that House Republicans have the 218 votes to impeach Biden, and some Republicans in both the House and the Senate are on record saying they don’t think there’s enough evidence to proceed.

  • Bypassing a House vote means averting a potential blow to GOP momentum towards impeachment.
  • “As of now I don’t support” an impeachment inquiry, Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) said on Tuesday.
  • Bacon said an inquiry “should be based on evidence of a crime that points directly to President Biden, or if the President doesn’t cooperate by not providing documents.”

Morocco earthquake: Race against time to reach survivors as number killed nears 2,900

The United Nations estimates some 300,000 people were affected by Friday night’s magnitude 6.8 quake, with most of the destruction and deaths in the High Atlas Mountains, where homes folded in on themselves and left residents trapped underneath the ruins.

Rescuers are battling to reach remote mountain towns devastated by the earthquake in Morocco, as the number of confirmed deaths from the disaster neared 2,900.

Search teams from the UK, Spain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates were joining efforts to help find people buried under debris.

The United Nations estimates some 300,000 people were affected by Friday night’s magnitude 6.8 quake, which was made more dangerous by its relatively shallow depth.

Most of the destruction and deaths were in Al Haouz province in the High Atlas Mountains, where homes folded in on themselves and left residents trapped underneath the ruins.

Much of the quake zone is in hard-to-reach areas and roads have been blocked by rocks, making it hard for rescuers to access the worst-hit locations.

Authorities have not yet issued any estimates for the number of people missing.

The UK has sent a 60-person search team with four dogs, medical staff, listening devices and concrete-cutting gear.

The European Union said it was releasing an initial €1m (£858,000) to non-governmental aid organisations in Morocco.

Survivors spend three nights sleeping outside

Aftershocks have hit the quake zone, leading those left homeless to spend three nights sleeping on the streets of Marrakech or under makeshift canopies in devastated towns.

Survivors struggling to find shelter and supplies have criticised the government’s response, accusing it of being slow.

The army said it was reinforcing search-and-rescue teams, providing drinking water and distributing food, tents and blankets.

French President Emmanuel Macron booed at Rugby World Cup opening ceremony

French President Emmanuel Macron was booed during the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup.

It began when he walked onto the pitch at the Stade de France in Paris.

While chants of “Allez Les Bleus” also rang out around the stadium, some of the jeering continued.

Emmanuel Macron at the Rugby World Cup opening ceremony

Earlier this year, there were large demonstrations against controversial pension reforms.

Mr Macron, arms folded, applauded World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont as he finished his speech.

Then, when it was his turn to address the crowd, the boos increased in volume and at first the president was barely audible.

But when he declared the 10th edition of the tournament open the crowd cheered in unison.

Arvind Kejriwal Summoned By CBI In Delhi Liquor Policy Case On Sunday: 10 Points

The CBI is investigating allegations that the liquor policy implemented by the Delhi government last year gave undue advantages to private retailers.

Arvind Kejriwal Summoned By CBI In Delhi Liquor Policy Case On Sunday: 10 Points

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been summoned by the CBI for questioning over alleged corruption in the capital’s now-scrapped alcohol sales policy that led to the arrest of his deputy Manish Sisodia in February, sources have told NDTV.

Here are the latest developments in this story:

  1. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has asked Mr Kejriwal to appear for questioning on Sunday, sources said, making it the first instance in recent memory where a Chief Minister has been summoned by the central agency in an investigation.
  2. Sources in the agency said they have uncovered fresh evidence and have grounds to question the Chief Minister now. They said the date was set for Sunday so that it does not disrupt the Chief Minister’s work.
  3. Arvind Kejriwal is yet to comment on the CBI’s move but in the past has said, “There is no such thing as a liquor scam”. The AAP has dismissed the charges as “vendetta” and efforts by the BJP, which governs at the centre, to target one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s most vocal critics.
  4. “Not a single leader of the AAP will be intimidated by these motivated charges. Many of our ministers, leaders and members have been targeted in the past. Our fight against the most corrupt government of PM Modi will go on,” senior party leader Sanjay Singh said.
  5. The CBI is probing allegations that the liquor policy implemented by the Delhi government last year, which ended government control over the sale of liquor in the capital, gave undue advantages to private retailers.
  6. Alleging the involvement of the “highest levels” of Mr Kejriwal’s government in the swindle, the agency has claimed crores in kickbacks were paid for favours in the policy and funnelled into his Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) election campaign in Goa last year.
  7. Manish Sisodia’s arrest in February was the highest-profile arrest in the case so far. The following month, he was arrested while still in jail by the country’s financial crime-fighting agency Enforcement Directorate, which is probing allegations of money laundering in the case.

Fugitive Mehul Choksi Wins Big, Now Can’t Be Removed From Antigua And Barbuda Without Court Order

Fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi wins big as Antigua and Barbuda high court orders that he cannot be removed from the country without its direction.

Fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi has won big as the Antigua and Barbuda high court said that he cannot be removed from the country without its order. Choksi is wanted in India in connection with Rs 13,000 crore fraud in the Punjab National Bank (PNB). According to Dominica-based Nature Isle News, Choksi argued in his civil suit that there is an obligation on the part of the defendants, the Attorney General of Antigua and the Chief of Police to carry out a thorough inquiry. He added that he has an arguable claim that he was subjected to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment

In his suit, Choksi asked for a probe into his claims and sought relief which includes a declaration that suggests he is entitled to a prompt and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his forcible removal from Antigua and Barbuda on or about May 23, 2021, ANI mentioned citing Nature Isle News. Now, the court has prohibited his removal from Antigua and Barbuda’s territory without a High Court ruling following an inter-party hearing and subject to Choksi exhausting all available legal remedies, including appeals.

“Further or in the alternative, a Declaration that the first Defendant is to establish an independent, judicial inquiry as to the circumstances of the Claimant (Mehul Chowksi)’s forcible abduction and removal from the jurisdiction of Antigua and Barbuda on or around 23 May 2021. A Declaration that the second Defendant has a duty to confirm to the Dominican police that the evidence supports that the Claimant was forcibly removed from the jurisdiction and taken to Dominica against his will,” the court order read.

It further mentioned, “An Order that the Claimant may not be caused to leave and/or be removed from the jurisdiction of Antigua and Barbuda without an order from the High Court after an inter partes hearing and subject to the Claimant exhausting any appeals or other legal relief provided by law. An Order that the second Defendant releases the statement taken by its officers from the Claimant on 15 August 2021.”

On the other hand, the defendants argued that there is no valid complaint that exposes a cause of action for any failure to carry out an ‘effective’ and ‘rapid’ investigation within the scope of the jurisdiction under section 7 of the Constitution. According to Nature Isle News, reported ANI, the defendant further said that the claim was frivolous, vexatious, and an abuse of the court’s process.

Choksi in his affidavits has claimed of being subjected to collusion, forced abduction, removal from Antigua and Barbuda, assault, and battery among others. He claimed that he was forcibly transported to the Commonwealth of Dominica aboard a boat, as per the report of Nature Isle News.

All in 50 Days: How Yogi Govt Finished Off Atiq Ahmed’s Rs 1400 Cr Empire, Exposed Shell Firms & Ended His Gang

Before 2017, Atiq Ahmed always managed to get bail and be a free man despite over 100 criminal cases pending against him.
Before 2017, Atiq Ahmed always managed to get bail and be a free man despite over 100 criminal cases pending against him.

‘Hum Toh Mitti Mein Mil Gaye’ — so said Atiq Ahmed after the death of his son Asad Ahmed in a police encounter. The Yogi Adityanath government has also struck financial blows in the last 50 days to finish off Atiq’s gang.

UP government officials said property and assets worth Rs 1,400 crore of Atiq and his henchmen have been confiscated, and the police had determined these assets were acquired through crime. The Enforcement Directorate has also dealt a severe blow by exposing assets worth over Rs 100 crore and discovering nearly 50 shell companies that Atiq and his gang used to convert their black money earned from extortion into white money.

“Besides a crime empire, the economic empire of Atiq Ahmed has also been demolished in the last 50 days. It is a death-knell for him. He has his brother Ashraf Ahmed will spend their life in jail, his two elder sons are also in jail, his third son Asad is dead and his two minor sons are in a juvenile home while his wife Shaista Parveen is absconding,” an official explained.

Sample this: Besides confiscating Atiq and his gang’s property worth Rs 1,400 crore, 15 teams of the Enforcement Directorate have also expedited their money laundering probe against Atiq and exposed assets worth another Rs 108 crore. The documents recovered during the ED’s raids on Atiq have revealed more than 50 shell companies which are dummy companies owned by someone else in the documents, but they were invested in by Atiq and his gang. All these companies were involved in the black money business network and the ED dragnet has fallen on a lawyer, Atiq’s accountant, a real-estate businessman, a former BSP MLA , a builder and a car showroom owner who have been central to running Atiq’s ‘business’.

ED has summoned all these close aides of Atiq for questioning.

Earlier before 2017, Atiq Ahmed had always managed to get bail and be a free man despite over 100 criminal cases pending against him. The first case in fact was lodged way back in 1979 but no government in UP could get him convicted in any case as either witnesses turned hostile or disappeared.

Gold mafia helped Gupta brothers in South Africa state capture

Al Jazeera investigation reveals a well-known money launderer as a previously missing link in the Gupta state capture.

One of South Africa’s biggest money launderers was behind three companies that played a key role in the country’s state capture by the controversial Gupta brothers under former President Jacob Zuma, Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit (I-Unit) has found.

The three companies, Varlozone, Zokubyte and Coral General Traders, were identified by the Zondo Commission — an investigation set up by the South African government — as conduits used for fraud and the capture of state funds by a small group of South African politicians and businessmen.

Yet the investigators appointed by the Zondo Commission were unable to identify who managed these companies and transferred looted South African money abroad on behalf of the Guptas.

Now, documents obtained by Al Jazeera show that the person behind Varlozone, Coral General Trading and Zokubyte was Mohamed Khan, also known as Mo Dollars, a well-known South African money launderer.

“That payment was done by Mohamed,” whistleblower Dawood Khan, Mohamed’s brother and former employee, told Al Jazeera.

State capture is a form of corruption where a small group of people influences the decision-making process of a state for personal gain. South Africa’s current government, under President Cyril Ramaphosa, has accused two brothers of the Gupta family of businessmen — which became synonymous with state capture under Zuma — of plundering the country’s funds through a systematic web of corruption. The brothers were arrested last June in the United Arab Emirates. But last week, the UAE dismissed South Africa’s request that the Gupta siblings be extradited.

The new revelation, identifying Mohamed Khan as the previously missing link in the Gupta state capture case, is part of Gold Mafia, a four-part investigative series into several gold smuggling and money laundering gangs operating in Southern Africa.

Whatsapp messages between Mohamed Khan and a bribed bank officer, obtained by Al Jazeera, show how Zokubyte and Varlozone were used to launder money [Al Jazeera]
Gupta brothers
The Zondo Commission was established in 2018 to investigate reports of state capture, corruption and fraud mainly by the Guptas, an influential South African family with Indian roots.

Since their arrival in South Africa in 1993, the Guptas managed to build a vast business empire and they eventually came to wield enormous influence in the country, allowing them to obtain large amounts of state funds that they laundered offshore.

As their power grew, the Guptas were awarded state contracts, allegedly bribed politicians and even had influence over ministerial appointments in Zuma’s government. Such was their clout that in 2013, they managed to use a South African military airport to bring hundreds of guests from India for a wedding, sparking a national controversy.

The money obtained in the state capture was sent abroad through a network of companies and eventually seemed to vanish. Zokubyte, Coral General Trading and Varlozone were all part of that network, dubbed “the spiderweb” by investigators.

Among the investigators appointed by the Zondo Commission was Paul Holden, an anti-money laundering expert. “We were basically looking at the flow of money into this network from the state capture and we knew it was going through a money laundering network,” he told Al Jazeera.

A breakthrough came when the commission was able to determine a direct link between the money from the state capture and the Guptas through transactions from South African company Varlozone to Dubai-based company Griffin Line General Trading.

Griffin Line General Trading was known to be controlled by the Guptas. But the owner of Varlozone, Shah Bukhari, was just a frontman. In reality, the company was run by Khan, a prolific money launderer who has worked for cigarette don and gold smuggler Simon Rudland, helping him transfer more than $100m abroad. Khan also bribed employees in several South African banks to help with the money laundering operation.

From South Africa to Hong Kong
Documents obtained by Al Jazeera show that money was moved from several companies to the accounts of Varlozone and Zokubyte. Varlozone then moved $1.8m of state capture money offshore over six months. Zokubyte laundered at least $600,000 of funds looted from the state. Coral General Traders acted as a pooling account — where money from multiple accounts can be kept temporarily — for funds to be moved offshore.

The money was sent abroad through a process called “merchanting”, which involves the creation of fake invoices to suggest that the transfer of funds is an advance payment for goods to be imported. No goods are actually ever sent, and companies at both ends of the chain — those invoicing for products meant to be sent, and those ostensibly buying these imports — are controlled by the same individuals.

The invoices mostly came from Hong Kong-based front companies, some of which were owned by Khan as well.

All three companies made these payments through Sasfin Bank, one of the banks where Khan had bribed employees, including Hussain Choonara, who was in charge of Sasfin Bank’s foreign exchange payments at the time.

Assam CM to file defamation case against Rahul Gandhi over ‘Adani’ tweet

Sarma said that he would file the case after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Assam on April 14.

Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Sunday said he would file a defamation case against Congress’ Rahul Gandhi over his tweet on ‘Adani’.

“Whatever Rahul Gandhi has tweeted is defamatory and once PM Modi goes back from Assam, a case will be filed against Gandhi after April 14,” mentioned the Assam Chief Minister.

It may be noted that taking to Twitter, Gandhi has taken names of former Congress leaders including Himanta Biswa Sarma, Jyotiraditya Schindia, Gulam Nabi Azad, Anil Antony and Kiran Reddy and connected them with Adani.

Sarma, responding to Gandhi’s tweet, had earlier said, “It was our decency to have never asked you, on where have you concealed the proceeds of crime from the Bofors and National Herald Scams. And how you allowed Ottavio Quattrocchi to escape the clutches of Indian justice multiple times. Anyway, we will meet in the Court of Law.”

US judge suspends approval of mifepristone in latest abortion setback

A U.S. judge in Texas on Friday suspended the two-decade-old approval of the abortion pill mifepristone while a legal challenge proceeds, dealing another setback to abortion rights in the United States.

Adding to the volatile legal landscape around abortion, a federal judge in Washington state on Friday issued a seemingly conflicting injunction that prevented federal regulators from altering access to the same abortion drug.

The 67-page ruling by U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in Amarillo, Texas, will not take effect for one week, in order to give the Biden administration a chance to file an emergency appeal, which the U.S. Department of Justice said it will do.

Kacsmaryk’s ruling is a preliminary injunction that would essentially ban sales of mifepristone while the case by anti-abortion groups before him continues. The judge, who was appointed to the bench by Republican President Donald Trump, has not yet made a final ruling on the merits of the challenge.

However, in his ruling he found that the lawsuit is substantially likely to succeed. He said that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had ignored risks in approving the drug.

“The Court does not second-guess FDA’s decision-making lightly,” he wrote. “But here, FDA acquiesced on its legitimate safety concerns – in violation of its statutory duty – based on plainly unsound reasoning and studies that did not support its conclusions.”

The case was brought by four anti-abortion groups headed by the recently formed Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine and four anti-abortion doctors who sued the FDA in November. They contend the agency used an improper process when it approved mifepristone in 2000 and did not adequately consider the drug’s safety when used by girls under age 18 to terminate a pregnancy.

“By illegally approving dangerous chemical abortion drugs, the FDA put women and girls in harm’s way, and it’s high time the agency is held accountable for its reckless actions,” said Erik Baptist of the Alliance Defending Freedom, which filed the case.

‘EXTREME ANTI-CHOICE AGENDA’

The ruling will likely inflame the fraught U.S. politics of abortion, which have divided the country since last year’s Supreme Court ruling that overturned a women’s constitutional right to the procedure.

“Democrats will do everything in our power to fight back to ensure access to safe and legal abortion is protected, and voters will hold every last Republican accountable for an extreme anti-choice agenda,” said Jaime Harrison, the chair of the Democratic National Committee.

Since the Supreme Court ruled, 12 of the 50 states now ban abortion outright while many others prohibit it after a certain length of pregnancy, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a research organization that supports abortion rights.

Mifepristone is part of a two-drug regimen, administered in combination with misprostol, for medication abortions in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. The drugs account for more than half of all abortions in the country.

Some abortion providers have said that if mifepristone is unavailable, they would switch to a misoprostol-only regimen for a medication abortion, which is not as effective. It is not yet clear how widely available it would be.

Classified Docs Leak on Social Media in Possible ‘Deliberate’ Move to Hinder Ukraine Efforts

Reuters

More than 100 classified documents detailing U.S. national security secrets have been leaked on social media, purportedly exposing crucial intelligence on Ukrainian military operations in a breach that could be a boon to Russia.

The documents, purported to have come from within U.S. military and intelligence agencies, have been circulated on Twitter, 4chan, and Telegram, where they were spread by pro-Kremlin commentators, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The Pentagon acknowledged on Thursday that officials were looking into the leak, which experts say may be one of the most damaging breaches in decades.

The New York Times, which was the first to report on the leaks, says defense officials were already scrambling early Friday to determine the scale of the first batch of leaked documents when it was discovered that another batch had been released.

One unnamed official quoted by the Times called the breach “a nightmare for the Five Eyes,” as the documents concern secrets regarding not only Ukraine, but also the Middle East, and China.

“As many of these were pictures of documents, it appears that it was a deliberate leak done by someone that wished to damage the Ukraine, U.S., and NATO efforts,” Mick Mulroy, a former senior Pentagon official, was quoted saying.

Officials say the documents do appear to be authentic Defense Department documents, but they have been modified in some ways to show scenarios more beneficial to Russia, such as lower figures for the number of Russian troops killed and inflated numbers of Ukraine’s war dead.

Some of the documents show the purported locations of Ukrainian air-defense systems, the quantities of air-defense missiles, and sensitive information about U.S.-provided arms and supplies.

Rahul Gandhi In Surat Today To Challenge His Conviction In Defamation Case

Rahul Gandhi is likely to move a plea in Surat’s sessions court to set aside the Magistrate order convicting him in the defamation case for a remark seen as an insult to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Rahul Gandhi’s Wayanad seat in Kerala is now vacant following his removal from the office.

New Delhi/Surat: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will appear in a Gujarat court today to appeal against his conviction and two-year sentencing in a 2019 defamation case.
Rahul Gandhi is likely to move a plea in Surat’s sessions court to set aside the Magistrate order convicting him in the defamation case for a remark seen as an insult to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The former Congress president, sources say, will also ask for an interim stay on the conviction which would also restore his Lok Sabha membership.

Mr Gandhi, who was recently disqualified as a parliament MP after the Gujarat’s court order, will be accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and the Chief Ministers of three Congress-ruled states – Ashok Gehlot, Bhupesh Baghel and Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

He had met his mother Sonia Gandhi yesterday before his court appearance.

The 52-year-old was convicted by a court and sentenced to prison for two years in Gujarat last month for a 2019 speech in which he linked PM Modi’s last name with two fugitive businessmen, remarking how the “thieves” shared the same last name.

The court, however, granted him bail for 30 days to appeal the verdict.

The defamation case was filed against Rahul Gandhi by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi for saying “How come all thieves have the common surname Modi?”

Mr Gandhi’s Wayanad seat in Kerala is now vacant following his removal from the office and the Election Commission may now announce a special election for the seat.

Navjot Singh Sidhu walked out of Patiala Jail on Saturday, 10 months after he was convicted in a road rage case. Soon after his release, the Congress leader addressed the media and launched an attack against the ruling BJP over the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha.

“There is no such thing as democracy right now. There is a conspiracy to bring President’s Rule in Punjab. Minorities are being targeted. If you try to weaken Punjab, you will become weak,” Navjot Singh Sidhu said.

He launched an attack against the BJP, saying that the saffron party-led government was “afraid”.

“Whenever a dictatorship came to this country, a revolution has also come and this time, the name of that revolution is Rahul Gandhi. He will rattle the government,” Navjot Singh Sidhu said on Saturday.
