Chiefs-Jets NFL Game Hits 27 Million Viewers as Taylor Swift Makes Second Week Cheering on Travis Kelce

NBC‘s Sunday Night Football game featuring the Kansas City Chiefs vs. the New York Jets averaged approximately 27 million viewers, making it the most-watched Sunday show since Super Bowl LVII on Fox in February.

According to preliminary data across NBC, Peacock, NBC Sports Digital, and NFL Digital platforms, that’s a 22% lift from last year’s Week 4 game (22.2 million as the Chiefs faced Tom Brady and the Buccaneers). Last night’s game also registered a national TV household rating of 12.9/35 — up 15% from last year’s Week 4 matchup.

Viewership peaked at an estimated 29.4 million viewers between 9:30-9:45 p.m. ET as the Jets climbed their way within eight points of the Chiefs in the second quarter of the game. Though, Kansas City ultimately took home the win with a 23-20 final score.

With another appearance from Taylor Swift, who was joined by friend Blake Lively, amid romance rumors with Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce, NBC’s “Taylor Made for Sunday Night” Sunday Night Football game promo was viewed approximately 8 million times.

Taylor Swift attends Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs game with his mom amid dating rumors

Taylor Swift is really fueling those Travis Kelce dating rumors.

The “Bad Blood” singer attended the Kansas City Chiefs game against the Chicago Bears at Arrowhead Stadium with the NFL star’s mom, Donna Kelce, on Sunday.

Swift sported the team’s colors by rocking a red-and-white zip-up jacket over a simple white top.

She completed the look by wearing her hair styled down and straight, with her signature red lip color on full display.

Swift — who appears to be in her WAGS era — was photographed cheering on her rumored beau alongside the athlete’s supportive mother, who was wearing a Chiefs jersey with her son’s number.

The “Blank Space” songstress and Travis, both 33, have been sparking romance rumors for awhile now — ever since the Super Bowl champion shared that he tried and failed to give Swift his number at her Eras Tour stop in Kansas City, Mo., in July.

The famous tight end revealed earlier this week that he invited the pop star to attend one of his games.

“I told her, ‘I’ve seen you rock the stage in Arrowhead, you might have to come see me rock a stage at Arrowhead and we can see which ones a little more lit,’” he said during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” Thursday, referencing his NFL team’s home stadium.

“We’ll see what happens in the near future.”

At the time, Travis also addressed the “intense” rumors that have been spiraling online and in the press for weeks now.

“No one knows what’s going on, especially when you’ve got Jason Kelce on live television telling people both sides,” he said, referring to a recent interview when his brother joked the rumors were “100 percent” true.

“He goes on ‘Thursday Night Football’ … the first thing he brings up is [his former reality show] ‘Catching Kelce.’ Then, not even a week later he’s telling everyone it’s 100 percent true … the guy is absolutely [ridiculous] he can’t stay out of the f—king headlines.”

China’s Xi opens Hangzhou Asian Games, ceremony dazzles

Chinese President Xi Jinping opened the COVID-delayed 19th Asian Games in the Eastern city of Hangzhou during a spectacular and at times raucous ceremony on Saturday (Sep 23), which organisers hope will lift the mood in a nation struggling with an economic slump.

Spectators in the city’s 80,000-capacity stadium let out a huge roar as Xi was introduced and walked in to sit with visiting dignitaries including International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad

The Games, delayed a year due to China’s measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, will be the country’s biggest sporting event in over a decade in several metrics, with around 12,000 athletes from 45 nations competing in 40 sports.

After the Chinese flag was brought out, the first team out was Afghanistan, whose female athletes, based abroad due to sport for women being banned by the Taliban, walked together with their male counterparts. Their flagbearers carried the tri-colour flag for Afghanistan which is used by international resistance movements and shunned by the Taliban.

Several teams including Chinese Taipei were vocally welcomed by the spectators, but none more than the home team, whose athletes are expected to dominate the medals table once again.

They also mark a stark contrast to the cheerless Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics which took place under China’s strict zero COVID conditions which lasted for nearly three years from January 2020 until late 2022.

“I feel excited, particularly as a Hangzhou local,” said a man surnamed Zhao on his way into the stadium. “It’s a great chance to show the world how nice our city is … it was also delayed by a year. But that gave us a chance to prepare even better.”

In an often spell-binding ceremony intended to burnish Hangzhou’s status as one of China’s centres of technology and creativity, dozens of balletic dancers hovered above a digitally projected lake in the wake of a flotilla of sail-boards.

In a modern take on the traditional lighting of the cauldron, a huge, digitally animated torchbearer “ran” the length of the stadium before settling to loom above the actual torch-bearer, China’s Olympic champion swimmer Wang Shun.

In synch, the pair lit a huge, multi-pronged cauldron, prompting another bout of cheering and soon after, a digital firework display.

But many of those not lucky enough to get a ticket grumbled about disruption.

A sizeable “traffic control area” around the city’s Olympic stadium was blocked off, at least one metro station was shut and other Games centres were closed and deliveries were disrupted on Saturday.

Powerful Panghal wins World bronze and quota for Paris Olympics

Antim Panghal. Credit: Special Arrangement

Young Indian wrestler Antim Panghal’s superb campaign at the World Championships culminated with a bronze medal, a performance that also earned the country a 53kg quota for the Paris Olympics.

The 19-year-old Panghal became only the sixth Indian woman to win a bronze medal at the Worlds with her win over Sweden’s Emma Jonna Denise Malmgren, the two-time European champion.
The high-scoring bout ended with a technical superiority win for the Indian, who became the first Indian wrestler — male or female — to lock a quota for the next year’s Games.
Panghal raced to a 5-0 lead after beginning with a quick push-out point. Malmgren fought with a take-down move and had the Indian in her grip but somehow the Indian wriggled out.

Chhetri penalty pens India’s comeback chronicle

Riding on a late Sunil Chhetri penalty, the Blue Tigers beat Bangladesh 1-0 in their Group A encounter at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou on Thursday, September 21, 2023. With the win, India put their campaign and their fate for qualification firmly back into their own hands, with a final game against Myanmar to be played on September 24.

After the chastening loss to hosts China, Igor Stimac’s boys were back against their familiar South Asian foes, a team who have actually been a tough one to break down for the Blue Tigers. Over 6,000 kilometres away, the Blue Colts took barely a minute to break the deadlock against Bangladesh’s U19, but in Hangzhou, things were different. Right from the start, it was clear that grit, not guile, would help eke out a result.

After a brief settling-down period, India were the ones to create a first attempt at goal; in the ninth minute, Rohit Danu and Rahul KP combining to put the ball at the feet of Sunil Chhetri, inside the box. The skipper’s shot, though, was deflected wide. Chhetri had another chance a few minutes later, with Ayush Dev Chhetri’s cross falling to him inside the six-yard box. Chhetri played the ball across goal rather than towards it, and Bangladesh cleared with ease.

The game fell into a pattern soon after, more midfield tussle than end-to-end action. Bangladesh’s pacey wingers were the focal points of their attack, constantly probing and drifting crosses into the Indian box. Rabiul Hasan and Jayed Ahmed put through a flurry of crosses into the Indian box midway through the first half, each of which was cleared with ease by a stoic Indian defence. On the one occasion that Bangladesh did breach the defence, Foysal Ahmed Fahim, cutting in to shoot, Dheeraj Singh saved comfortably.

The Blue Tigers’ lynchpin for the first half was Bryce Miranda, the winger tirelessly running at defenders and constantly making the Bangladeshi players second-guess their options. In the 40th minute, his corner landed perfectly for Chinglensana Singh. The defender’s subsequent header towards goal was blocked. Despite having edged possession, India had not registered a single shot on target when injury time struck in the first half.

Just like in the last game though, it was in that period that suddenly the action picked up. Unsurprisingly, Miranda was at the centre of it, if only fleetingly. It was his low-centred ball that caused panic in the Bangladesh defence, a miscued clearance and a weak punch by Mitul Marma, falling straight to Chhetri 10 yards from goal. The skipper shot and shot hard, but Marma was up for the challenge, diving low to make the save. The rebound, after a melee, fell to Abdul Rabeeh, who shot at goal again.

Again, Marma saved. This time the rebound fell straight to Rabeeh, who had the presence of mind to lob the ball across the box to Rahul KP inside the six-yard box. Rahul rose high and headed towards goal, and again Marma was there, deflecting the ball onto the post. Bangladesh cleared frantically and the best chances of the first half were gone.

India picked up right where they left off at the end of the first half, with Miranda’s energy and enterprise in particular driving most of it. Three minutes into the second half, he curled a cross perfectly into the six-yard box, only for Rahul KP to miscue his header. From the rebound, Rabeeh shot high and wide.

India were in control of the tempo of the game, but Bangladesh were not to be written off. They capitalised on the smallest of errors and ensured Dheeraj remained on high alert. The youngster saved brilliantly after a defensive mix-up saw Fahim bear down on the Indian goal in the 50th minute.

In the 60th minute, India almost had the opener, in glorious style, no less. From a freekick wide on the left, 35 yards from goal Samuel James shot for goal, when a cross was perhaps more expected. It caught everyone by surprise, Marma included. To Bangladesh’s relief, though, it bounced off the post.

Cricket World Cup 2023 to bring in Rs 2,000-Rs 2,200 cr ad revenues

Favourable match timings and free streaming on Disney+ Hotstar expected to more than double digital revenues from Rs 450 crore in 2019 to Rs 950 crore in this edition

Favourable match timings and free streaming on Disney+ Hotstar expected to more than double digital revenues from Rs 450 crore in 2019 to Rs 950 crore in this edition

The upcoming Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 which India is hosting is expected to generate Rs 2,000-Rs 2,200 crore in combined ad revenue on TV and digital platforms compared to the Rs 1,350 crore it did four years ago in the 2019 edition.

“We expect the Cricket World Cup to generate ~INR 20-22bn in ad revenue on TV/digital platforms combined,” said a note from brokerage firm Elara Capital. The firm pegs digital revenues to more than double from Rs 450 crore in 2019 to Rs 950 crore in this edition, while TV is expected to rake in Rs 1,150 crore ad revenues in 2023 compared to the Rs 900 crore it did in 2019.

Disney Star, which holds the ICC TV and digital media rights till 2023, has announced that it will stream the matches for free on its Disney+ Hotstar app in a bid to compete with Reliance Industries-backed JioCinema which streamed the IPL cricket matches for free in 2023. The network will also broadcast the matches on its Star network of channels.

As matches are scheduled to start at 10.30 am or 2pm IST, favourable timings are likely to enhance the overall viewership of the tournament, according to Elara Capital’s Senior Vice-President Karan Taurani. He sees digital revenues getting a significant boost this year.

“The timings are favourable and viewers may watch the first half of the match on OTT. The World Cup will be available for free for all mobile users on Disney+ Hotstar app. In terms of TV advertising, expect a 6% CAGR versus the prior edition of the CWC in CY19. For the digital medium, CAGR may touch 21% versus 2019 levels,” he said in his note.

Asian Games Football: China Thrash Under-Prepared And Jaded India 1-5

Asian Games: A severely-fatigued and under-prepared Indian team got a rude reality check with hosts China out-muscling them 1-5 in an opening group league encounter

A severely-fatigued and under-prepared Indian team got a rude reality check with hosts China out-muscling them 1-5 in an opening group league encounter of the Asian Games football competition in Hangzhou on Tuesday. Giao Tianyi (17th min), Dai Weijun (51st min), Tao Qianglong (72nd and 75th minute) and Hao Fang (90 2) scored for the hosts, while Rahul KP’s (45 1 minute) equaliser from an acute angle was possibly the best strike of the match. It was heartening to see a third-string team holding the title contenders on an even keel during the first 45 minutes, which saw Indian custodian Gurmeet Singh Chahal valiantly save a spot-kick taken by rival captain Zhu Chenjie.

India now need to beat Bangladesh and Myanmar in their remaining two games to qualify for the second round. Myanmar beat Bangladesh 4-2 in another game in this group.

Having reached the Games Village late on Monday evening, the third-string Indian team, with not even four specialist defenders in their ranks, didn’t have enough co-ordination amongst themselves. They looked jet-lagged, not rested enough and there was no way that there could have been a miracle.

The gulf in class and quality was evident and most of the Chinese attacks happened from India’s wide left (China’s right flank) side, which was being manned by Sumit Rathi. It became a free-ride for the Chinese attackers.

Also, the humidity and lack of training time had its effect as the Indians didn’t have the legs to last beyond the first hour. And, once the second goal was scored due to Sandesh Jhingan’s poor anticipation, the floodgates opened.

Jhingan was also responsible for another goal when he had a brain fade and wanted to dribble his team past the danger in his own penalty box and committed harakiri.

A lot of players suffered from cramps due to humidity and, obviously, not having enough time to warm-up.

Skipper Sunil Chhetri was on the pitch for 85 minutes and, save a pile driver that sailed way over the horizontal, he had precious little to do with a literally non-existent feeder line, which concentrated on creating a melee in the defensive third to thwart the wave of Chinese attack.

The only silver-lining was the goal by Rahul KP, the former U-17 World Cupper, who was freed on the wide right by Abdul Rabeeh and the Kerala Blasters player sprinted and smashed it in from near zero degree, much to the awe of a capacity home crowd.

Asia Cup 2023: On Loss Against Bangladesh, Rohit Sharma’s ‘Big Picture’ Clarification

Bangladesh managed to eke out an unexpected six-run win over India in an Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match.

Rohit Sharma defended the decision to make massive changes to the playing XI after India were beaten by Bangladesh in their final Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match on Friday. India were already in the final of the tournament and for the inconsequential match, they decided to rest veteran players like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj. On the other hand, youngster Tilak Varma was handed his ODI debut while Mohammed Shami, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur and Suryakumar Yadav made their way to the side. In the aftermath of the match, Rohit said that the idea was to give some game time for the cricketers and that can be important ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023.

“We wanted to give some game time to the guys, keeping the bigger picture in mind. Not compromising on how we wanted to play this game. Get in some players who are likely to play the World Cup,” he said.

Rohit was all praise for the batting performances by Shubman Gill and Axar Patel.

The Indian men’s football team has dropped out of the top 100 in the FIFA Rankings after the defeat against Lebanon in the Kings Cup. A 77th-minute goal by Kaseem Al Zein put paid to India’s hopes of retaining the third place in the 49th King’s Cup 2023 as Lebanon defeated India, it also took away 5.09 ranking points from India. This disappointing outcome comes just months after India celebrated their return to the top 100. In the last FIFA Rankings update published by FIFA in June, India had managed to secure the 100th spot following an impressive performance in the Intercontinental Cup and the ongoing SAFF Championship. During June, India recorded five wins and two draws, earning them 4.24 ranking points and pushing them into the world’s top 100 teams.

Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealander Erin Routliffe beat former champions Laura Siegemund of Germany and Russia’s Vera Zvonareva 7-6(9) 6-3 to win the U.S. Open women’s doubles final on Sunday.

Dabrowski and Routliffe, who began their partnership just last month, saved eight of the nine break points they faced during a match that lasted two hours, 14 minutes.

It marked the first Grand Slam title for Routliffe, who previously represented Canada, and third for Dabrowski following the mixed doubles titles she won at the 2017 French Open and 2018 Australian Open.

“Thanks to Gabby for playing with me. She really took a chance on me and I really appreciate it and love her for it,” Routliffe said during their on-court interview. “And obviously I hope we can have many great results to come in the future.”

Siegemund and Zvonareva, who won the 2020 U.S. Open women’s doubles competition, failed to convert any of the five break point opportunities they had in a tightly-contested first set that required a drama-filled tiebreaker.

Basketball Germany beat Serbia to win World Cup for first time

Germany won their first-ever FIBA Basketball World Cup title by beating undermanned Serbia 83-77 in a slugfest of the two European powerhouses on Sunday in Manila.

Germany leaned on a 22-10 surge in the third quarter, orchestrated by brothers Franz and Moritz Wagner, to build a cushion and win the World Cup’s first all-European final since 2006.

The tournament most valuable player Dennis Schroder carried Germany with a game-high 28 points, way above his average of 17.9 points per game, and added two rebounds and two assists.

“This is an unbelievable group… coach did a great job bringing us together,” Schroder told a press conference. “Our defence and how we play as a basketball team is just special.”

Germany, who won all eight tournament games, became the first team since 2006 to win a FIBA World Cup crown while debuting in the final.

Serbia absorbed another heartbreak after losing to the United States 129-92 in the 2014 final, but finished better than their quarter-final exit in 2019.

Daniil Medvedev put on a brilliant performance in the semi-final of the US Open 2023 as he knocked out the defending champion Carlos Alcaraz to setup a summit clash with Novak Djokovic.

Medvedev defeated Alcaraz 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to book his place in the final of this year’s US Open, which will be a rematch of the summit clash from 2021.

The first set was a closely contested affair. Despite Alcaraz’s impressive first serve percentage of 83% compared to Medvedev’s 57%, the Russian managed to bring the game to a tie-break. Medvedev took control immediately and won the tie-break convincingly with a score of 7-3.

This momentum carried over into the second set, where Medvedev quickly found himself leading 3-0. Despite Alcaraz’s attempts to claw back, Medvedev maintained his dominance, breaking Alcaraz’s serve and finishing the set with a score of 6-1.

However, Alcaraz was not ready to concede defeat. In the third set, he managed to turn the tables on Medvedev. After saving two break points, Alcaraz capitalized on Medvedev’s errors and won the third set 6-3. This victory breathed new life into the match and set the stage for an exciting fourth set.

The fourth set saw both players fighting tooth and nail for every point. Medvedev managed to break Alcaraz’s serve early in the set, putting him in a commanding position. Despite facing multiple break points, Medvedev held his nerve and served out the match, winning the fourth set 6-3.

‘Absolute shamelessness. Mockery of rules, unethical’: Prasad wants India vs Pakistan Asia Cup Super 4 match washed out

Prasad went on to add that it would be fair if rain played spoilsport on both days of the India vs Pakistan match and the “malicious plans” didn’t succeed.

Former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad came down heavily on the Asian Cricket Council for keeping a reserve day only for the India vs Pakistan Super 4 match while there is a rain threat looming large over all the matches of the tournament to be held at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The ACC made the announcement on Friday. “If adverse weather suspends play during the Pak vs India game, the match will continue on 11th September 2023 from the point it was suspended,” a statement said.

The arch-rivals are scheduled to play in Colombo on Sunday but thundery showers are forecast for the Sri Lankan capital over the weekend. As soon as the news became public, it was meted with harsh criticism on social media. Prasad launched a no-holds-barred attack on the organisers, calling the move “absolutely shameless” “a mockery” and “unethical”.

“If true this is absolute shamelessness. The organisers have made a mockery and it is unethical to have a tournament with rules being different for the other two teams, Prasad tweeted.

The former pacer did not stop there. He went on to add that it would be fair if rain played spoilsport on both days of the India vs Pakistan match and the “malicious plans” didn’t succeed.

French President Emmanuel Macron booed at Rugby World Cup opening ceremony

French President Emmanuel Macron was booed during the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup.

It began when he walked onto the pitch at the Stade de France in Paris.

While chants of “Allez Les Bleus” also rang out around the stadium, some of the jeering continued.

Emmanuel Macron at the Rugby World Cup opening ceremony

Earlier this year, there were large demonstrations against controversial pension reforms.

Mr Macron, arms folded, applauded World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont as he finished his speech.

Then, when it was his turn to address the crowd, the boos increased in volume and at first the president was barely audible.

But when he declared the 10th edition of the tournament open the crowd cheered in unison.

Veteran Djokovic overcomes Shelton to reach US Open final

Tennis – U.S. Open – Flushing Meadows, New York, United States – September 8, 2023 Serbia’s Novak Djokovic celebrates after winning his semi final match against Ben Shelton of the U.S. REUTERS/Mike Segar

Novak Djokovic used his experience to overcome American Ben Shelton as the Serbian battled past his 20-year-old challenger 6-3 6-2 7-6(4) to reach his 10th U.S. Open final on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday.

Shelton had flummoxed opponents in New York with his big serve, but the 36-year-old second seed Djokovic was able to harness his experience to neutralise a third-set surge from the young American.

He next faces the winner of a match between top seed and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and third seed Daniil Medvedev.

“Obviously I knew that he’s got a lot of firepower. He has an amazing pop on the serve, he’s just so dynamic and very unpredictable what comes next,” said Djokovic. “I just had to stay there mentally, present, calm, and focus on the game plan.”

Already assured of returning to the top of the world rankings when they are updated after the tournament, Djokovic will continue the hunt for his 24th Grand Slam title to match Margaret Court’s all-time singles record on Sunday.

Shelton handed Djokovic a break in the sixth game of the first set with a series of unforced errors, and the unseeded American was unable to convert his own break point chance in the ninth.

In the second set, Shelton’s best weapon failed him as he helped Djokovic secure a break with a double fault in the fifth game and he dropped his racquet in frustration as he sent a forehand out to hand the Serb another break in the seventh.

Djokovic was competing in his 47th major semi-final while Shelton was appearing in his first. The difference in experience was apparent as the second seed broke Shelton with a fine forehand winner in the opening game of the third set.

But the American came to life late as he fended off a break point with a 143-mph (230-kph) ace in the fifth game to a chorus of cheers from the home crowd.

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka, Asia Cup 2023: Matheesha Pathirana Sets Up Big Win For Sri Lanka

Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka made resolute fifties after Matheesha Pathirana’s hostile bowling as Sri Lanka slayed Bangladesh by five wickets in their Asia Cup opener in Pallekele on Thursday.

Sri Lanka started their 2023 Asia Cup campaign with a win on Thursday.

Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka made resolute fifties after Matheesha Pathirana’s hostile bowling as Sri Lanka slayed Bangladesh by five wickets in their Asia Cup opener in Pallekele on Thursday. Pacer Pathirana’s 4 for 32 restricted Bangladesh to 164. The home side then rode on Samarawickrama’s 54 off 77 balls and Asalanka’s unbeaten 62 off 92 balls to overhaul the target in 39 overs. Samarawickrama is going through a career rejuvenation this year after fading from the scene.

He earned a recall to the Lanka Test side after five years against Ireland this July, and he also made a return to their ODI unit after a gap of four years during the home series against Afghanistan in June.

Samarawickrama made his Test return count with a hundred in the second match against Ireland. On Thursday, his fifty was the cornerstone of Lanka’s crucial win over Bangladesh.

But Lanka had to overcome a few uncomfortable moments before that.

Bangladesh bowlers had reduced Sri Lanka to 43 for three in 9.2 overs, dragging their side back into the match after their batsmen’s shoddy effort.

In Lankan cricketing circles, Samarawickrama has always been known as a stylish batsman.

Even on a slowing down pitch, the right-hander produced some sparkling shots using a wafer-thin bat and supple wrists.

His ability to find gaps around the field was visible when he drove pacer Shoriful Islam through covers with disdain for four, and later flicked left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan through mid-wicket for a boundary.

Samarawickrama had an equally composed partner in Asalanka as they produced 78 crucial runs for the fourth wicket.

The left-handed Asalanka, who has been in fine fettle this year in ODIs, was never hesitant to take the odd risks for a boundary, and it helped Samarawickrama to bat assuredly at the other end.

But off-spinner Mahedi Hasan snapped the partnership.

Hasan had Samarawickrama stumped by Mushfiqur Rahim with a tossed-up delivery that beat the batter.

Bangladesh did get a couple of quick wickets, but they just did not have enough runs on the board to defend.

For that, Sri Lanka should thank their bowlers who worked around a resilient fifty by Najmul Shanto, who made 89 off 122 balls with seven fours.

However, other batsmen did not pick up any hint from Shanto as Pathirana and spinner Maheesh Theekshana (2/19) combined to strike at regular intervals after Bangladesh opted to bat first.

Babar Azam, Iftikhar Ahmed Power Pakistan To Huge Win Over Nepal In Asia Cup Opener

Skipper Babar Azam hit a delightful 151 while Iftikhar Ahmed smashed his maiden ODI century as Pakistan thrashed minnows Nepal by 238 runs in the opening match of the Asia Cup

Asia Cup 2023: Pakistan beat Nepal by 238 runs

Skipper Babar Azam hit a delightful 151 while Iftikhar Ahmed smashed his maiden ODI century as Pakistan thrashed minnows Nepal by 238 runs in the opening match of the Asia Cup in Multan on Wednesday. Babar and Iftikhar played pivotal roles in powering Pakistan to 342 for six after opting to bat. Babar (151 off 130) was involved in two crucial partnerships after a sedate start — first stitching 86 runs with Mohammad Rizwan (44 off 50) and then sharing a whirlwind 214 runs for the fifth wicket with Iftikhar (109 not out off 71 balls) — to take Pakistan to an imposing total.

Babar decorated his knock with 14 fours and four sixes, while Iftikhar, who was at his destructive best, struck 11 boundaries and four hits over the fence.

This was after Pakistan made an unimpressive start to their innings as they lost both the openers early.

It was always going to be a Herculean task for Nepal and it turned out to be so.

Kushal Bhurtel made a brave start to Nepal’s chase with consecutive boundaries off Shaheen Shah Afridi on the opening two balls, but it was shortlived as the ace left-arm made a superb comeback to dismiss him and Nepal skipper Rohit Paudel in the last two balls of the over.

Naseem Shah then got into the act in the next over and induced an outside edge from Aasif Sheikh which was pounced by Iftikhar in the first flip as Nepal slipped to 14 for 3.

Aarif Sheikh (26) and Sompal Karmi then tried to steady the ship with a 59-run fourth-wicket stand, before Haris Rauf went through the defence of the former.

Rauf then dismissed Nepal’s top-scorer Sompal (28) an over later to reduce the Himalayan nation to 82 for 5.

Thereafter, wickets fell like nine pins as Nepal batters failed to produce any resistance, eventually bundling out for 104 in 23.4 overs.

Leg-break bowler Shahdab Khan cleaned up Nepal’s tail to return with impressive figures of 4 for 27.

Earlier, while Fakhar Zaman (14) showed intent initially but failed to carry on as he was brilliantly caught by a diving Nepal wicketkeeper Aasif Sheikh off the bowling of Karan KC in the sixth over.

Pakistan suffered yet another blow soon when Imam-ul-Haq was found short of the crease while attempting a single that was not for the taking. A direct throw from Nepal captain Rohit Paudel ended his innings.

Babar was then joined at the crease by wicketkeeper-batter Rizwan and the duo stabilised Pakistan’s innings.

While Babar played the role of an anchor, Rizwan showed his attacking instincts during the 86-run stand for the third wicket which came off 111 balls.

But the start of their partnership was far from rosy as the duo struggled to keep the scoreboard ticking initially with Pakistan reaching 50 in the 12th over.

India’s Neeraj Chopra made history on Sunday as he clinched India’s first ever gold medal in the World Athletics Championships after beating Pakistan’s Ashraf Nadeem in the men’s javelin final.

Neeraj Chopra managed a best throw of 88.17m in his second attempt in the men’s javelin final to secure the first position ahead of of Nadeem, who managed 87.82m in the final round.

The rise and rise of Neeraj Chopra

The gold medal in the world championships adds to Neeraj’s tally of top positions in the 2016 South Asian Games, 2017 Asian Championships, 2018 Commonwealth Games, 2018 Asian Games, 2020 Olympics, 2022 Diamond League, 2022 world championships and the 2023 world championships.

Adding to the significance of the moment, three Indian athletes claimed spots in the top eight, with Kishore Jena (84.77m) and DP Manu (84.14m) securing the fifth and sixth positions, respectively.

This marks the first instance of three Indian athletes finishing in the top eight of a World Championships event.

The legend of Neeraj Chopra

At 25 years old, Chopra’s standout performance came during his second attempt, as he registered his best throw of the day. His series included a foul to start, followed by throws of 88.17m, 86.32m, 84.64m, 87.73m, and 83.98m.

Securing the silver was Pakistan’s reigning Commonwealth Games champion, Arshad Nadeem, who achieved his season’s best throw of 87.82m. Meanwhile, the bronze went to Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic.

Neeraj Chopra enters elite company

Chopra has now joined an elite club, becoming just the second Indian athlete, following the legendary shooter Abhinav Bindra, to concurrently hold titles from the Olympics and World Championships. Bindra claimed the World Championships title at the age of 23 and an Olympic gold at 25.

Notably, Chopra, who originally made history as India’s first track and field Olympic gold medalist at the Tokyo Games in 2021, secured a silver medal in the 2022 edition of the World Championships. Prior to him, long jump legend Anju Bobby George had secured a bronze in the 2003 World Championships.

No Kuldeep Yadav Or Yuzvendra Chahal! Matthew Hayden Picks India’s 15-Member World Cup 2023 Squad

There were a few surprises as Matthew Hayden picks the ICC World Cup 2023 squad for India.

File photo of Matthew Hayden

Former Australian cricket team opener Matthew Hayden named his picks for India’s ICC World Cup 2023 squad and it had a couple of surprises. Hayden decided to include both Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson as wicket-keeping options with Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel being the specialist spinners. While KL Rahul was included, it seemed like he would operate strictly as a batter. On the other hand, both Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal did not find a place in the squad selected by the ex-Australia star.

Hayden included Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav as the specialist batters while Kishan and Samson were the wicket-keepers.

In the bowling department, Jadeja and Axar were the spin options while Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Jasprit Bumrah as the fast bowlers. Hardik Pandya was included as an all-rounder who is capable of bowling his full quota of overs if the team needs him.

Earlier, Hayden had his say about Chahal missing out on Asia Cup 2023 selection.

Jasprit Bumrah Leads Hardik Pandya in Two-way Race for India Vice-Captaincy During Asia Cup, ODI World Cup

Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya leading race for vice-captaincy (AFP Photo)

Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya are said to be leading the race to deputise for India captain Rohit Sharma at the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 and the ICC ODI World Cup at home later this year. While Hardik has been leading the T20I team in Rohit’s absence since the last T20 World Cup, Bumrah is leading a second-string Indian team against Ireland in an ongoing three-match T20I series.

Both the star players are leading the race for India’s vice-captaincy ahead of the two marquee tournaments this year. According to a report in news agency PTI, Bumrah could have a slight edge over the allrounder given he has also led India in the past for the rescheduled fifth Test against England last year when Rohit wasn’t fully fit.

Bumrah himself only made his comeback after being sidelined for nearly a year due to a back injury. The 29-year-old underwent surgery after sustaining a stress fracture on his back, but made his much-awaited comeback in the T20I series opener against Ireland leading the Men in Blue to a 2-run win through DLS method.

“If you look in terms of leadership seniority, Bumrah is ahead of Pandya as he captained the Test team in 2022. He has also been ODI vice-captain before Pandya during the ODI tour of South Africa,” a BCCI source in know of things told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

“Don’t be surprised if you see Bumrah being made ODI deputy to Rohit for both Asia Cup and World Cup. There is a reason why he was handed captaincy in Ireland instead of Ruturaj,” the PTI source added.

With Rohit turning 36 earlier this year, the BCCI is looking to manage the Hitman’s workload, thus he hasn’t played a single T20I fixture since the T20 World Cup 2022 semifinal against England.

Pandya has led the Indian team with much success, but he oversaw a first bilateral (T20I) series recently against West Indies in his captaincy as they lost a five-match series 3-2 after making a comeback from 0-2 down.

Final Four: Australia makes it through to Women’s World Cup semifinals seeking history for Matildas

There will be a first-time winner of the Women’s World Cup this year, and maybe, just maybe, it will be host country Australia.

The Matildas, serving as co-hosts of the tournament with New Zealand, became the first home team since the United States in 1999 to win a quarterfina l in nine Women’s World Cups. Australia has reached its first semifinal in team history and faces England on Wednesday for a chance to play for the title.

“I genuinely really believe that this team can do great history in so many ways,” Australia coach Tony Gustavsson said, “not just winning football games, but the way that they can inspire the next generation, how they can unite the nation, how they can leave a legacy that is much bigger that football.”

England, the European champion, advanced with a 2-1 victory over upstart Colombia. England also reached the semifinals in 2015 and 2019, only to finish third and fourth and never reach the Women’s World Cup final.

But before the Australia and England showdown, first-time semifinalist Spain takes on powerhouse Sweden on Tuesday in Auckland.

Aside from a 4-0 loss to Japan in group play, Spain has been a force throughout the tournament. It even tuned out an earthquake roughly an hour before its quarterfinal win over 2019 runner-up Netherlands.

The earthquake Friday in New Zealand’s capital of Wellington measured 5.6 on the Richter scale and created minor shaking in and around the stadium.

“We were so concentrated on the game that we didn’t feel it, although we felt some shakes at the hotel the day before,” Spain coach Jorge Vilda said. “The victory of Spain was the earthquake.”

Sweden, meanwhile, is the highest ranked team still in the tournament at second in the world, according to FIFA. The Swedes got into the semifinals by knocking off previously undefeated Japan, the 2011 winners and last remaining champions in the tournament after so many early eliminations of the best teams in women’s soccer.

“I think we have the team to go all the way,” left back Jonna Andersson said, “and now we are one step closer.”

AUSTRALIA
The Matildas advanced after a tense — and electric — penalty shootout 7-6 over France in front of a sold-out crowd in Brisbane, Australia.

It took 20 penalties to decide the winner in the longest shootout in the history of the tournament. It was the game of a lifetime for goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, who stepped up to take a penalty with the score at 3-3 but hit the post.

Arnold then managed to twice save shots from French midfielder Kenza Dali, the first being waved off after Arnold was ruled to have come off her line for the first save. Arnold said she was “incredibly disappointed” to have missed her shot on goal and thanked her teammates for keeping the Matildas in the game.

Australia, at 12th in the world, is the lowest-ranked team remaining in the tournament.

Sam Kerr, the injured superstar who missed all of group play, came off the bench against France but ended up playing nearly a full game when the match went to extra time. Kerr converted her penalty kick. And the Australians have also been boosted by the play of 20-year-old Mary Fowler, who has stepped in to fill Kerr’s void in this tournament.

Arnold said the Matildas need a day to regroup before focusing on England.

“I don’t want to ever get ahead of myself, and we’re all the same in that aspect,” she said. “We just take one game at a time, one half at a time, whatever that is, and we just keep getting to the next step every time. So now that we’ve made the semifinal for the first time, we’ll take a moment to process what we’ve actually done.”

Watch: Hardik Pandya Labelled ‘Selfish’ For Act That Denied Tilak Varma Half-century

Hardik Pandya was subjected to extreme criticism on social media after his last-ball six denied Tilak Varma a half-century in the 3rd T20I against West Indies.

Hardik Pandya finished chase with a six, denying Tilak Varma a fifty

India skipper for the T20I series against West Indies, Hardik Pandya has been subjected to plenty of criticism over the last few days, pertaining to the team’s poor performances in the first two matches of the series. However, Hardik found himself in the line of fire for a different reason after the 3rd T20I, which India won convincingly. With the Indian team chasing a target of 160 runs, Hardik hit a six on what turned out to be the last ball of the match to finish the chase, despite the fact that the non-striker Tilak Varma needed only 1 run to complete his half-century.

On the 5th ball of the 18th over, Hardik hit a maximum on the bowling of Rovman Powell, taking India across the line. But, in the process, Varma remained not-out on 49. Here’s the video:

The act by Hardik has been branded ‘selfish’ by fans on Twitter who didn’t shy away from criticising the veteran cricketer. Here are some reactions:

Hardik Pandya is the most selfish cricketer till date.

Japan definitely have to be slightly happier of the two sides. India had a chance of going top of the table today but Malaysia will stay there. For Japan, it is a valuable point against the hosts and tournament favourites and it is something that they can build on after the disappointment they suffered against South Korea.

Not family, but 18 Brij Bhushan loyalists file nominations for upcoming WFI elections

Brij Bhushan’s son-in-law Vishal said that 18 nominations have been filed and the candidate pitched for the President position of WFI is Sanjay Kumar Singh. The WFI polls are scheduled to be held on 12 August

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh (ANI)

Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Monday said that ‘no one from his family’ would contest the upcoming elections of the national sports body. Brij Bhushan has been granted interim bail in a case where female wrestlers led a protest alleging that Brij Bhushan sexually harassed female wrestlers including a minor.

Brij Bhushan on Monday visited the Indian Olympic Association office in national capital Delhi on the last day of nomination for WFI elections on Monday.

Brij Bhushan’s son-in-law Vishal told news agency ANI that 18 nominations have been filed and the candidate pitched for the President position of WFI is Sanjay Kumar Singh.

According to a report by NDTV, the panel includes one candidate for President, six for vice president, seven candidates for executive members, two for joint secretary, one for secretary general, and one for the treasurer post of the wrestling body.

Australia crush Canada 4-0 to reach World Cup knockouts

In front of a febrile crowd at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, Raso struck in the ninth minute with a low, right-boot and doubled down in the 39th from a goalmouth scramble as unused captain Sam Kerr cheered by the touchline.

Hayley Raso scored a first half brace and Mary Fowler struck after the break as Australia crushed Canada 4-0 on Monday to storm into the last 16 of the Women’s World Cup and send the Olympic champions spinning out of the tournament.

In front of a febrile crowd at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, Raso struck in the ninth minute with a low, right-boot and doubled down in the 39th from a goalmouth scramble as unused captain Sam Kerr cheered by the touchline.

Fowler made sure of the win with a deft touch in the 58th minute that pinged in off the right post, before Steph Catley slotted a penalty in stoppage time as a relieved nation celebrated the co-hosts’ advance.

Canada bowed out at the group stage for the first time since 2011 and with some regret after having needed only a draw to advance.

There was no need for Kerr to be Australia’s saviour and the striker can rest her injured calf for a week before the co-hosts’ next clash in the last 16, most likely against Denmark.

Australia topped Group B on six points, one ahead of Nigeria, who also advanced after a 0-0 draw against Ireland.

Canada’s talismanic captain Christine Sinclair started on the pitch but bowed out of her sixth and final World Cup in disappointment at halftime when coach Bev Priestman triggered a raft of substitutes.

With their tournament on a knife-edge after the 3-2 shock by Nigeria, Australia played with courage and were quickly rewarded when a Steph Catley cross found Raso in the box.

She drilled a low shot inside the far post to put Australia in front. Although an offside flag went up, the goal was confirmed by VAR, sending the crowd into raptures.

They almost made it 2-0 minutes later, but Raso’s shot was well saved by goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.

Grappling for greater accountability in India’s sports

The foundations of Indian sport are currently trembling after seven women wrestlers, including one minor, accused the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexually harassing several grapplers over a number of years.

A shocked nation has watched this downward spiral as the sporting ecosystem appears to be trapped in inertia, apathy and insensitivity.

A stronger leadership may have taken control of the situation, settling it to everyone’s satisfaction, even while a criminal investigation was underway, and a judicial verdict would follow.

By not acting on wrestlers’ pleas immediately and effectively, the authorities have unwittingly paved the way for a platform that is free for all now. When the wrestlers first went on strike a few months ago, they had steadfastly refused to entertain politicians or political entities to cash in on their grievances.

But having watched the government’s muted response — apart from establishing a panel headed by boxer Mary Kom to probe into the matter —  the wrestlers this time have not only freely mingled with politicians from Opposition parties but have also invited them to the protest site.

On Friday, wrestlers even set up two committees to guide the protest forward. One committee will comprise various khaps, farm leaders and student and labour unions. The other will have only wrestlers. Clearly, the wrestlers have made their intentions clear – they will not budge from their position until their demands are met, primary among them being the arrest of the WFI chief.

Brij Bhushan, an MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Kaiserganj constituency, is no saint. A political heavyweight, he has four cases against him, including robbery and attempted murder. He was also jailed for several months in the mid-1990s.

It is probable that if Brij Bhushan was not an influential leader of a national political party, he would have been forced to resign as the WFI chief based on allegations of sexual harassment.

Particularly, given that a minor has also accused him of harassment, under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, Brij Bhushan would be immediately arrested.

However, in our reality, here he is, walking free while our athletes, symbols of our  national pride, are on the streets, demanding justice. With the Asian Games scheduled in October, most of these athletes had sure-fire medal prospects.

They should have been training and honing their skills. Instead, they have been compelled to spend their time on the streets of the national capital.

Coincidentally, there are BJP Haryana politicians who have thrown their weight behind the wrestlers.

Renowned coach Mahavir Phogat, on whom the blockbuster movie Dangal was made, threatened to return his medals if the wrestlers didn’t get justice. Mahavir had joined BJP three years ago while his wrestler daughters — Geeta and Babita —  are also members of the ruling party.

Some may view it as a battle for one-upmanship. Most of the top grapplers in the country are from Haryana, while the federation is controlled by a UP man who has had run-ins with a few wrestlers in the past.

Be that as it may, allegations of sexual harassment are not to be taken lightly.

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president P T Usha and its joint secretary Kalyan Chaubey, who is also the All India Football Federation president and a BJP member, have precipitated the matter.

While criticising the wrestlers’ protest a few days ago, Chaubey made a bizarre, if not outrageous, comment saying how the protest was denting the image of India, an economy of $5 trillion.

When a Member of Parliament with criminal antecedents does not harm the country’s image, how can international medal-winning athletes protesting, demanding justice for being sexually harassed bring disrepute?

P T Usha, a rare woman athlete to head a sports body in the country, even if she is a political appointee, threw the wrestlers under the bus by castigating them.

In such a scenario, it is natural for the question to arise whether India has created an enabling and supportive atmosphere for athletes to report instances of abuse.

Governing guidelines

To begin with, the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011, includes clear instructions to National Sports Federations to comply with the guidelines for prevention of sexual abuse in sports.

Interestingly, well before the National Sports Development Code came into vogue, the Sports Ministry had written to the IOA and National Sports Federations that the Supreme Court guidelines laid down in the Vishakha judgement had to be observed to prevent sexual harassment in the sector. It proceeded to list 10 steps that each of them had to follow.

In 2013, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports instructed National Sports Federations and other sports organisations that the Prevention of Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, 2013, is applicable to them too.

These directives are quite elaborate and, if followed in letter and spirit, may suffice to curb sexual harassment in Indian sport.

Since an overwhelming majority of national camps are held in the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala, and Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) National Centres of Excellence (NCoE) across the country, SAI has established an
Internal Complaints Committee in each centre, with a senior lady officer as its chairperson.

If the alleged instances of sexual harassment happened when the wrestlers were in national camps in the SAI NCoE, Lucknow, complaints should have been lodged there.

Curiously, a former Director-General of Sports Authority of India is on record as saying that many sexual harassment cases may not have been reported by SAI trainees “fearing retribution”.

Punjab Kings beat Lucknow Super Giants in last-over thriller

Sikandar Raza slammed his maiden IPL fifty after an impressive show by his side’s bowling unit as Punjab Kings beat Lucknow Super Giants by two wickets in a last-over finish in Lucknow on Saturday.

Invited to bat, captain KL Rahul smashed his first fifty of this IPL season but Punjab Kings roared back with timely wickets to restrict the Lucknow side to a modest 159 for eight.

Chasing 160 for a win, Zimbabwean Raza, who also picked a wicket with his spin bowling, cracked a 41-ball 57 to keep PBKS in the hunt after Matthew Short’s 22-ball 34.

Once he was holed out in the 18th over off Ravi Bishnoi, Shahrukh Khan (23 not out) completed the job, knocking off the final runs with a boundary.

Raza hit four boundaries and three sixes in his match-winning knock.

On a two-paced wicket, KL Rahul displayed great composure en route his 56-ball 74 as he added 53 and 48 runs with Kyle Mayers (29) and Krunal Pandya (18) for the first and third wickets respectively.

However, LSG couldn’t finish things with a flourish as they lost four wickets for 48 runs in the last five overs, with Sam Curran picking up three of those.

Kagiso Rabada (2/34), Arshdeep Singh (1/22), Harpreet Brar (1/10) and Sikandar Raza (1/19) were also among wickets.

Defending the total, pacer Yudhvir Singh made a sensational debut, dismissing fellow debutant Atharva Taide (0) and Prabhsimran Singh (4) — who replaced Rahul Chahar as impact sub — in his first two overs to reduce PBKS to 17 for 2.

Matthew Short looked in good nick, slamming three boundaries off Avesh Khan, before producing two hits to the fence off Yudhvir.

Krishnappa Gowtham, who replaced Kyle Mayers as impact sub, too, was smacked for a six by Short but the spinner had the batter caught by Stoinis as Punjab slumped to 45 for 3 in 6 overs.

Raza then took the onus on himself as he and Harpreet Singh Bhatia (22) added run-a-ball 30 before Pandya broke the stand, holing out the former at deep backward square.

Raza exploded in the 13th over, clobbering two successive sixes and a four off Pandya to pile up 17 runs.

However, KL Rahul produced a sensational effort to get rid of Jitesh Sharma, while Ravi Bishnoi, introduced after 14 overs, got rid of Curran (6) before accounting for Raza to raise hopes of an upset.

Needing 21 in 13 balls, Shahrukh sent Woods sailing for a maximum, while Brar too picked up a four to bring down the required runs.

Earlier, Rahul and Mayers provided LSG a flying start with the burly left-handed West Indian being the aggressor initially.

While Rahul dealt in boundaries, Mayers dealt in maximums.

Mayers blasted Mathew Short over deep backward square leg and followed it up with a backward punch for another six over covers off Sam Curran before depositing Rabada into the stands as LSG raced away to 40 for no loss in the powerplay.

With the pitch offering a bit of grip and turn, Curran, who led PBKS in place of an injured Shikhar Dhawan, brought in the spinners.

Harpreet Brar soon removed Mayers, who was holed out to deep backward square leg in the eighth over, while Raza trapped Deepak Hooda (2) as LSG slipped to 62 for 2.

New Zealand’s Matt Henry Derails Pakistan Innings With Hat-Trick In 1st T20I

Matt Henry finished with 3/32, his career-best figure in T20Is.

Matt Henry picked up a hat-trick spread across two overs in the first T20I against Pakistan in Lahore to join an elite group of New Zealand bowlers. Henry had derailed Pakistan’s innings in the 13th over with the wickets of Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed off back-to-back deliveries. Shadab was caught out by Latham off the penultimate ball of the over and Itikhar fell the next ball, edging again to the wicketkeeper. Henry returned in the 19th over to dismiss Shaheen Afridi off the first ball, caught brilliantly near the ropes by Daryl Mitchell off the first ball in the over.

Henry finished with 3/32, his career-best figure in T20Is and also became just the fourth New Zealand bowler to take a hat-trick in men’s T20Is. Jacob Oram was the first to do so when he took a hat-trick in 2009 against Sri Lanka. The all-rounder then became just the second player to record a hat-trick in men’s T20Is. Tim Southee joined him on the list next year against Pakistan.

Rinku Singh goes 6, 6, 6, 6, 6 off last five balls to script miracle win for Knight Riders

The last over started with 29 needed. Then it was 28 from five balls. Then followed carnage, and an unlikely Knight Riders win

Kolkata Knight Riders 207 for 7 (Venkatesh 83, Rinku 48*, Rana 45, Rashid 3-37, Joseph 2-28) beat Gujarat Titans 204 for 4 (Vijay 63*, Sai Sudharsan 53, Narine 3-33) by three wickets

This is what they mean when they say truth is stranger than fiction.

Chasing 205, Kolkata Knight Riders’ Impact Player Venkatesh Iyer and their captain Nitish Rana had kept them in the game by adding 100 runs 9.1 overs. Alzarri Joseph dismissed both, and then Rashid Khan picked up a hat-trick to kill the contest. At least that’s how it appeared.

But, just then, Rinku Singh rose to the occasion. When Knight Riders needed 39 off eight balls, Rinku was on 8 off 14. He hit the last two balls of the 19th over, bowled by Josh Little, for a six and four.

With 29 required from the last over, ESPNcricinfo’s Forecaster gave Knight Riders a 1.29% chance of winning. After all, no team had chased down that many in the 20th over of a T20 game. The previous best was 23, by Sydney Sixers against Sydney Thunder in 2015, and Rising Pune Supergiants against then Kings XI Punjab in 2016.

Umesh Yadav took a single off Yash Dayal’s first ball, and then Rinku went 6, 6, 6, 6, 6 to script a win that will be talked about for a long, long time.

Knight Riders’ opening woes

In Rahmanullah Gurbaz and N Jagadeesan, Knight Riders had their third opening pair of the season in as many games. In fact, since the start of IPL 2022, they have used nine different opening pairs in 17 matches – Delhi Capitals are second with five, also in 17 games – and have had starts of 30 or better only twice. It was no different on Sunday. Mohammed Shami and Little, who came in as an impact substitute for B Sai Sudharsan, removed Gurbaz and Jagadeesan inside four overs with just 28 on the board.

Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana threaten to take the game away

Knight Riders finished the powerplay on 43 for 2. The field restrictions were lifted, but Iyer and Rana didn’t have a problem in sending the ball to the boundary, or over it. Iyer hit Dayal for a four and six in the seventh over. In the next, Rana smashed Joseph for two sixes.
Rashid’s first two overs went for 23. Sandwiched between them was a 17-run Dayal over. With 77 needed from seven overs, Knight Riders were well and truly alive, before Joseph’s double-strike to remove both set batters tilted the game towards Titans.

Rinku trumps Rashid’s hat-trick

Rashid had conceded 34 in his first three overs, but he almost won the game for his side with his final over. Knight Riders needed 50 from four overs with Andre Russell in the middle. It looked like Rashid had kept his one over only for Russell – he had dismissed him four times in 38 balls before this game. And with his first ball, he had Russell caught behind off an inside edge that bobbed up off the pad. Narine hit the next to deep midwicket, and Shardul Thakur was lbw off the third to give Rashid his record fourth hat-trick in T20 cricket. All three wickets came from googlies.
Rashid seemed to have sealed the game. Except Rinku had other ideas. With 28 needed from five balls, Dayal lost control. The next three balls were full tosses, and Rinku dispatched them over long-off, over deep-backward square leg, and again over long-off.
After a chat with Rashid and David Miller, Dayal bowled a back-of the-hand slower one into the pitch only for Rinku to clear long-on. With four needed from the last ball, another meeting was called, with Shubman Gill too joining in this time. Dayal bowled the last one short and outside off and Rinku hit it over his head. Even before the ball had cleared the boundary, Rinku took off in celebration, running towards his team-mates, who had rushed on to the field to embrace him.

Shubman Gill gives Titans strong powerplay

The day started with Rashid, standing in for the unwell Hardik Pandya, opting to bat after winning the toss. After a slow start, Wriddhiman Saha was looking to accelerate. He had hit a boundary in each of the previous three overs, but Sunil Narine neutralised that threat. Saha tried to slog-sweep, only to top-edge it towards deep midwicket where Jagadeesan, running backwards, took an excellent catch.
That left Titans 38 for 1 after five overs. Varun Chakravarthy, though, bowled a touch too full and Gill caressed him for back-to-back fours through extra cover. Varun’s over also included five wides, which helped Titans finish the powerplay at 54 for 1.
