Daniil Medvedev put on a brilliant performance in the semi-final of the US Open 2023 as he knocked out the defending champion Carlos Alcaraz to setup a summit clash with Novak Djokovic.

Medvedev defeated Alcaraz 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to book his place in the final of this year’s US Open, which will be a rematch of the summit clash from 2021.

The first set was a closely contested affair. Despite Alcaraz’s impressive first serve percentage of 83% compared to Medvedev’s 57%, the Russian managed to bring the game to a tie-break. Medvedev took control immediately and won the tie-break convincingly with a score of 7-3.

This momentum carried over into the second set, where Medvedev quickly found himself leading 3-0. Despite Alcaraz’s attempts to claw back, Medvedev maintained his dominance, breaking Alcaraz’s serve and finishing the set with a score of 6-1.

However, Alcaraz was not ready to concede defeat. In the third set, he managed to turn the tables on Medvedev. After saving two break points, Alcaraz capitalized on Medvedev’s errors and won the third set 6-3. This victory breathed new life into the match and set the stage for an exciting fourth set.

The fourth set saw both players fighting tooth and nail for every point. Medvedev managed to break Alcaraz’s serve early in the set, putting him in a commanding position. Despite facing multiple break points, Medvedev held his nerve and served out the match, winning the fourth set 6-3.

Medvedev beats Rublev in Dubai for hard-court hat-trick

Daniil Medvedev continued his impressive form with a win 6-2 6-2 over compatriot Andrey Rublev in the Dubai Tennis Championships final on Saturday, claiming his third title in three weeks.

Defending champion Rublev, bidding for a second straight title in Dubai, was unable to put up much resistance as he did not have a single break point during a battle between childhood friends that lasted just over an hour.

Medvedev, who entered the final having not dropped a set this week and ended Novak Djokovic’s unbeaten run in the semi-finals, added to last month’s titles in Doha and Rotterdam to take his tally to 19 Tour-level titles.

“It is amazing because at the start of the year, it was not perfect. In tennis when you don’t win matches you have doubts. Now it just feels better,” Medvedev said.

“I was really happy with these three weeks and I am looking forward to the next ones.

“I know Andrey can cause a lot of trouble to everyone on Tour. Every time we play he tries to make me suffer, I try to make him suffer. Today I managed to be on top, but the next match could be a different story.”

The 27-year-old, who sent down nine aces and converted 57% of the breakpoints he won in the final, moves sixth in the ATP rankings, while Rublev drops to number seven.

“I think it’s a good thing for Daniil that he’s doing this, for his career, for his life, that he’s achieving those things. Three titles in a row, it’s unreal. What else to say?” Rublev told a post-match news conference.

Daniil Medvedev handed Novak Djokovic his first defeat of the year, beating the world number one 6-4 6-4 on Friday to reach the Dubai Tennis Championships final where he plays holder Andrey Rublev for a third title in as many weeks.

In a contest where the players put their early season win streaks on the line, it was Rotterdam and Doha champion Medvedev who drew first blood by breaking an error-prone Djokovic twice and closed out the first set with a searing forehand.

Playing in his first tournament since winning the Adelaide and Australian Open titles, Djokovic has hardly put a foot wrong barring a small scare in his opener against Tomas Machac.

The 35-year-old had his moments and looked the better player after going down 2-5 in the opening set but he dropped his serve again early in the second after hitting a return long.

It was the opening Medvedev could have only dreamed of in his bid to claim a fifth win over Djokovic in 14 matches and the Russian pounced for a 4-2 lead after some high-octane tennis.

Former U.S. Open champion Medvedev peeled away further with an ace for a crucial hold and sealed a 13th straight win in his next service game.

“When you play Novak you just have to play your best and hope he doesn’t on the day because when he does… he has 22 Grand Slams so it’s going to be tough and it’s not certain you’ll win,” Medvedev said.

“I’m happy I managed to play at a higher level than him… I stayed composed and I’m really happy to be in the final.

Daniil Medvedev smashes racket in frustration, loses World No. 1 ranking to Novak Djokovic after loss at Indian Wells

Daniil Medvedev ‘s first stint as the World No. 1 lasted for less than a month

Daniil Medvedev ‘s first stint as the World No. 1 lasted for less than a month after he crashed out of the Indian Wells Masters in the third round. The Russian tennis ace suffered defeat at the hands of Gael Monfils in California, as the Frenchman came from a set down to secure a victory.

Medvedev appeared to let his emotions get the better of him as he was blown away in the third set. After being broken in the first game of that deciding set, Medvedev took his frustrations out on his racket and smashed it into pieces. He made such a mess that, after the pair changed ends, Monfils was left to sweep up pieces of plastic from the baseline with a towel.

The 26-year-old Medvedev, competing as a neutral athlete, needed to reach at least the last eight to maintain his place at the top of the pile.

Now that he has failed to do so, Novak Djokovic will once again wear the crown despite being absent from this tournament due to travel rules preventing him from entering the US because he is unvaccinated against Covid.
