India v Australia: Will it be the final curtain for India’s icons?

Star batter Virat Kohli has struggled with form in recent years

The Border-Gavaskar Test series between Australia and India, which starts in Perth on Friday, pits the two best teams in red-ball cricket against each other.

The last four series between these two countries have been compelling, making it the pre-eminent rivalry in Test cricket today. This period has been particularly good for India, who have won the rubber on all four occasions, including twice in succession in Australia.

But India’s unexpected recent whitewash by New Zealand, marked by the failure of top stars, has raised doubts about the future of some big names.

The spotlight in the current series will be on veterans Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who have been the pillars of India’s dominance across formats over the past decade. However, with advancing age and recent dips in form, questions linger about their ability and hunger to continue competing at the highest level.

Rohit Sharma’s prowess in white-ball cricket has often overshadowed his superlative batting in Tests

The most concerning issue has been the form of star batter Virat Kohli, the poster boy of Indian cricket.

His recent struggles have stretched over more than three years. In the past five years, Kohli, who once piled up Test centuries with ease, has managed to add only two more to the 27 he had amassed earlier at a rapid pace.

His Test batting average, once hovering in the mid-50s, has dipped below 48. The run machine who was touted as most likely to overhaul Sachin Tendulkar’s Test records has been sputtering.

Australia has long been a happy hunting ground for Kohli. His first Test century came in Adelaide in 2011, and during the 2014-15 series, he dazzled with almost magical strokeplay, cementing his place among the game’s greats.

Kohli’s fiery aggression – outdoing even the Aussies at their own game – earned him respect and adoration from fans Down Under. When he led India to their historic first Test series victory in Australia in 70 years, he assumed cult status.

Captain Rohit Sharma, a late bloomer in Test cricket, may have had comparatively modest success in the format, but the respect he commands from opponents is every bit as significant as that given to Kohli.

After starting with centuries in his first two Tests, Sharma lost his way and place, briefly, till he was given the opener’s slot. Since then he hasn’t looked back.

Sharma’s prowess in white-ball cricket has often overshadowed his superlative batting in Tests, where he can be destructive and sublime as the situation demands.

He often faces criticism for his inconsistency in producing big scores. However, there’s unanimous agreement that when Sharma finds his rhythm, India’s chances of winning Tests soar dramatically.

While Sharma hasn’t had a prolonged lean trot like Kohli, he has unfortunately hit a dramatic slump in the recent home Tests against Bangladesh and New Zealand.

In 10 innings each during these matches, neither Sharma nor Kohli managed to muster even 200 runs. The calibre and class of Sharma and Kohli are beyond dispute. The concern is whether they are over the hill.

Ashwin and Jadeja are undoubtedly world-class all-rounders. With more than 3,000 runs apiece, Ashwin has surpassed 500 Test wickets, while Jadeja recently crossed the 300-mark. Both would be welcomed with open arms into any team in the world.

In tandem, they’ve more often than not played havoc with opposing teams though their overseas record is modest.

In 10 Tests in Australia, Ashwin has taken 39 wickets at an average of 42.15. Meanwhile, Jadeja has claimed 14 wickets in just four Tests at an impressive average of 21.78 – better than Ashwin’s, though from a smaller sample size.

But such stats can also be misleading.

Ashwin is the more experimental of the two, adding an element of surprise and edge to his bowling. In 2021, he had Australia’s top batsmen, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, dancing to his tune. Jadeja, on the other hand, is the master of control – economical and deadly, especially on a crumbling pitch.

The value of Ashwin and Jadeja extends beyond just their bowling. Ashwin’s doughty batting in the memorable 2021 series was critical in India winning the series. Jadeja has often shored up the batting with stout defence and spunky strokes when the top order has fallen. And he is worth 30-35 runs on fielding alone.

The concerns about Ashwin and Jadeja stem from their relatively modest bowling returns against New Zealand at home last month. Ashwin took nine wickets at a strike rate of 66.33, while Jadeja claimed 16 wickets at 37.93.

Effectively, the Kiwi spinners outshone both these stalwarts, and India lost a home series after 18 Test wins. As in the case of Sharma and Kohli, was this an aberration or a sign of waning powers?

It would be reckless to dismiss players of such high calibre and vast experience based on a handful of stats. Beyond their skill and ambition, great players rely on self-belief and pride to overcome the toughest challenges and deliver when it matters most.

Germany pulverise Bosnia 7-0 to seal top spot in Nations League group

Germany dismantled visitors Bosnia and Herzegovina 7-0 on Saturday with a statement win and two goals apiece from Florian Wirtz and Tim Kleindienst to secure top spot in their Nations League group A3 with a game to spare.

The Germans, who had already qualified for next year’s quarter-finals of the competition, are on 13 points with Netherlands in second place on eight, and are eager to re-establish themselves as an international force ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

“We have no injuries from the game and our counter-pressing was extraordinarily good,” said Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann after the biggest win for the team since he took over last year.

“And then to score seven goals against an opponent sitting so deep is something.

“We wanted to win possession and then quickly play the ball forward, be quick in transition and find those runs, something we did not do often enough at the Euros (in June). We did it well,” Nagelsmann added.

Germany, travelling to Budapest to face Hungary on Tuesday for their last group match, took the lead with in-form Jamal Musiala’s looping header after only 90 seconds.

The Bayern Munich attacking midfielder has now scored in his third consecutive game for club and country.

Everything seemed to be working seamlessly for the hosts and they doubled it with striker Kleindienst’s first Germany goal in the 23rd minute after he turned in Robert Andrich’s shot.

Kai Havertz twice came close in an explosive first half before getting on the scoresheet in the 37th after a quick one-two with Wirtz, who bagged Germany’s fourth goal five minutes after the restart with a dipping free kick that caught Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj off guard.

With Bosnia’s defence in complete disarray and unable to handle their opponents’ speed, the hosts showed no signs of easing off and kept pouring forward.

‘Jo Sarkaar Kahegi…’: BCCI Vice-President Rajiv Shukla Over Team India Not Visiting Pakistan For CT 2025; Video

The Champions Trophy 2025 remains in a limbo due to India’s refusal to come to Pakistan and PCB’s decline to accept hybrid model.

BCCI Vice-President Rajiv Shukla (L). | (Credits: Screengrab)

BCCI Vice-President Rajiv Shukla has declared that they only followed the Indian government’s directive over not travelling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025. Shukla stated that they have conveyed the message from the Home Ministry’s message to the International Cricket Council (ICC).

With the PCB releasing the schedule of the Champions Trophy a few months ago, the BCCI has now declined to send the Indian team to the neighbouring nation for the tournament. However, the PCB is also declining for a hybrid model, putting the tournament under enormous doubt.

Speaking to ANI, Rajiv claimed:

“Bharat-Pakistan ka aap jahan tak Champions Trophy ka punchein, yeh bada spacht hai ki jo sarkaar kahegi, vahi hum karenge. Jo sarkar ka message hoga vahi hum kahenge, usi hisaab se ICC ko keh diya hai.”

(If you talk of India-Pakistan Champions Trophy match, whatever the Indian government says, we are to follow that only. Whatever the Home Ministry told us, we have conveyed that to the ICC).

“ICC is now BCCI because Jay Shah is set to become Chairman of ICC” – Najam Sethi

Meanwhile, former PCB chairman Najam Sethi slammed the ICC for not raising their voice against the BCCI due to the latter majority revenue for them. He said during an interview with a local channel, as quoted by CricketPakistan.pk:

Bullied in ‘Bullring’: Samson, Tilak deflate South Africa with series-winning tons

Opting to bat, India posted a massive 283 for 1, thanks to unbeaten centuries from Tilak Varma (120 not out off 47 balls) and Sanju Samson (109 not out off 56 balls), and then bowled South Africa out for 148 in 18.2 overs.

Sanju Samson and Tilak Verma Credit: X/BCCI

Johannesburg: Sanju Samson’s breathtakingly beautiful stroke-play was matched by Tilak Varma’s understated brilliance as India, riding on their record breaking twin tons, bullied a listless South Africa with a series-winning 135-run victory in the fourth and final T20 International here on Friday.

India thus ended this year’s T20I campaign by winning all bilateral series along with the T20 World Cup triumph and victory percentage of 92.

Samson’s 109 not out off 56 balls was complemented by Varma’s 120 not out in only 47 balls as they took India to an unsurmountable 283 for 1 in 20 overs, their highest total on overseas soil.

In South Africa’s run chase, Arshdeep Singh (3/20) swung the ball prodigiously under lights during an opening spell that reduced the hosts to 10 for 4 and were eventually shot out for 148 in 18.2 overs.

Among the plethora of records that tumbled, the most special one will be the two Indian batters scoring centuries in same T20I innings. Samson and Varma also posted the highest partnership for India in T20 Internationals — 210 off just 93 balls for the second wicket.

Samson completed his ton in 51 balls while Varma (41 balls) took 10 balls less.

Samson now has three T20I tons in the last five innings which also included two ducks.

It seems brilliance and disappointment exist together for the Kerala man who will certainly increase a lot of selection headache for Ajit Agarkar when Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant come back in the Indian T20I squad.

For Varma, back-to-back T20I tons on South African soil will not only increase his stocks but it also speaks volumes about the kind of team man skipper Suryakumar Yadav is. Suryakumar decided to relinquish his favourite batting spot, allowing a young talent to blossom showing what leadership is all about.

Team India ‘High Target For Terrorists’: What BCCI Will Tell ICC, PCB For Not Travelling To Pakistan

Pakistan are designated hosts of Champions Trophy 2025, while India hold maximum power in world cricket owing to its capability to generate revenue

File photo from an India vs Pakistan cricket match© AFP

Where and when the Champions Trophy 2025 be played? That is the biggest question in world cricket right now. Pakistan are designated hosts of Champions Trophy 2025, while India hold maximum power in world cricket owing to its capability to generate revenue. Now, BCCI has informed world cricket body ICC that it won’t be travelling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. India and Pakistan don’t play bilateral series due to political tensions. The arch-rivals play each other only in ICC and Asian Cricket Council events.

India last toured Pakistan in 2006. Now, with India refusing to tour Pakistan, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a hard stance. It has said that a ‘hybrid model’ of hosting is out of question. It has also written to the ICC to explain in a written response about the reasons behind BCCI refusing to travel to Pakistan.

Now, according to a video report in Sports Tak, in the response by BCCI there will be a heavy mention about the fear of safety for the Indian cricket team players.

The report said that, along with the reply that the BCCI is sending to the ICC, there is a dossier which mentions that the BCCI is concerned with the terrorist acts in Pakistan. It mentions about cross-border terrorism and also the fact that Indian players can be potentially high target in Pakistan. Though the Indian cricket team might get a lot of love from the common people, there always remains a chance that terrorists might target the Indian cricket team. Like, what happened in 2009 with the Sri Lanka team in Pakistan. The dossier will also mention the terrorism incidents that happened in Pakistan in the last 12 months.

While neither the PCB nor the BCCI are willing to hedge from their current stance, the responsibility of resolving the matter falls on the shoulders of ICC, who only have three options with them. They are:

1. Convince the PCB to agree on BCCI’s hybrid model proposal, which would see five of the 15 games of the tournament being played in UAE.

2. Move out the Champions Trophy from Pakistan entirely, but the decision could see the PCB deciding to withdraw its team’s participation from the tournament altogether.

India To Host Champions Trophy If Pakistan Maintain Hard Stance? Report Claims Initial ‘BCCI Talks’

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has also maintained a hard stance and has ruled out possibility of a ‘hybrid model’ where some matches, including India’s, are played at a neutral ground

File photo of an India vs Pakistan cricket match© AFP

The uncertainty over Champions Trophy 2025 is one that has kept the world cricket on tenterhooks. From the time, the BCCI informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) that it will not be travelling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, the future of the tournament is in doldrums. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has also maintained a hard stance and has ruled out possibility of a ‘hybrid model’ where some matches, including India’s, are played at a neutral ground. It has also written to the ICC seeking a written response on the reason behind India not agreeing to come to Pakistan.

Among the places which were being discussed as the neutral venues were Sri Lanka, Dubai and South Africa. A PTI report claimed that there has been no recent discussion on South Africa as a venue.

Now, a video report on Sports Tak has claimed that within the BCCI corridors, there has been a discussion that if Pakistan maintains its hard stance of not agreeing to a hybrid model and pulls out of the Champions Trophy, then the tournament can be hosted in India. The report further claimed that if Pakistan pulls out, then the ICC may have to pay huge compensation to the broadcasters as India vs Pakistan clash is a marquee match in any cricket event.

The report added that this discussion is at an initial stage and nothing has been finalised yet.

India players produced a super show on Wednesday (November 13) in the third T20I of the ongoing four-match series against South Africa and went on to win it by 11 runs. In the match played at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday (November 13), India first rode on Tilak Varma’s maiden T20I century to post a total of 219 runs on the board and then successfully managed to defend the target by restricting Proteas to 208 for 7 in 20 overs. Arshdeep Singh picked up three wickets for the Suryakumar Yadav-led side in the match, whereas two South African batters were sent back to the pavilion by Varun Chakravarthy.

India won the third T20I by 11 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the series, and during the match, India also broke three elite T20I records.

  • The win over South Africa on Wednesday was India’s 164th victory in 241 T20I matches played so far, and it also helped Men in Blue become the second team in the world after Pakistan to register outright wins in 100 T20Is away from home.
  • Indian batters smashed a total of 13 sixes in the third T20I, which helped the 2024 T20 World Cup winners become the first team in the world to hit 200 sixes in T20s in a calendar year.
  • The 219-run total in the Centurion T20I was also the eighth time India crossed the 200-run mark in T20Is in 2024. It helped Men in Blue create the record of scoring most 200+ scores in a calendar year. India surpassed seven 200+ scores each by the Birmingham Bears in 2022, India in 2023, and Japan in 2024.
  • Tilak Varma scored a century for India in the third T20I, which helped Men in Blue become the third team in the world to score five individual centuries in a calendar year. Indian batters scored five individual centuries in 2023 as well, and during the 2016 edition of the IPL, RCB also scored five centuries.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli Need To ‘Get Away From Cricket’ To Regain Mojo Before BGT 2024, Says Brett Lee

The swords were drawn at Rohit and Kohli after IND’s whitewash at home and that is exactly why Lee believes that the two superstars need to reset mentally and start new for BGT 2024.

Sometimes the best way to move ahead is to take a step away. Former Australian pacer Brett Lee believes that is exactly what Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli must do to regain their mojo before they take on the mighty Australia in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Even Rohit might not have foreseen the utter humiliation his side would face as India condemned themselves to eternal humiliation with a 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand at home, the first-ever in a three-match series for India.

The swords were most definitely drawn at Rohit and his talisman Virat Kohli the very next moment and that is exactly why Lee believes that the two superstars need to reset mentally and start new.

“If you look at the Hitman (Rohit Sharma) and King (Virat) Kohli – they got 90 runs each in the series. It’s so unlike them. They are way better players than that. It’s hard to put your fingers on why they failed,” stated Lee on his YouTube channel.

“When you have a couple of bad runs back-to-back, that’s when the pressure could set in. I guess the thing now is someone like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma just have to go back to the drawing board.”

Lee also stated the importance of getting back to the basics, and taking a break away from the game as much as possible. He also issued a warning to both batters regarding the Australian pace attack, which will look to exploit any and every bit of weakness they can find to pose a threat to the Indians.

BCCI Denies Traveling To Pakistan For Champions Trophy, PCB Reacts Strongly By Sharing Video On X: Watch

The BCCI has informed the ICC about the Indian government’s denial of permission to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy in 2025.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) President, Mohsin Naqvi – (Image: X/@TheRealPCB)

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is gearing up to host the Champions Trophy next year. The venues are being upgraded to meet the ICC standards, and the renovation work is in progress in different cities across the country. The PCB has been sharing videos of the stadiums that will host the fixtures during the eight-nation tournament.

On Saturday, the PCB shared a video in which the Members of the PCB Board of Governors could be seen receiving a briefing on the ongoing upgradation of Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has reportedly informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) about the Indian government’s denial of permission to travel to Pakistan for the showpiece event.

“This is an ICC event, and BCCI has informed the global body that it won’t travel to Pakistan. It will depend on the ICC to inform the host nation about the development and then close in on the scheduling of the tournament. The convention is to announce the schedule 100 days prior to the commencement of the event,” PTI quoted a source from the BCCI as saying.

The BCCI intimating to the ICC about its inability to travel to Pakistan would leave the PCB with no option but to organise the Champions Trophy in the ‘Hybrid Model’. However, board chairman Mohsin Naqvi said in a press conference that his board had not received any official communication from the BCCI. He added that it is the ICC’s prerogative, as the principal organiser, to inform Pakistan about the latest developments.

Gautam Gambhir Out? Report Says India Coach To Lose Test Role If…

Gautam Gambhir could end up losing his role as Team India’s head coach in Tests if Rohit Sharma’s men don’t do well in Australia.

Gautam Gambhir faces sacking threat© BCCI/Sportzpics

The start to what was promised to be a fruitful coaching career hasn’t gone the way Gautam Gambhir or the well-wishers of the Indian team had predicted. Gambhir arrived in the Indian team on the back of a title-winning campaign at Kolkata Knight Riders. But, since becoming Team India’s head coach, Gambhir has suffered an ODI series loss in Sri Lanka and a clean sweep at home against New Zealand in Tests. As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) top brass tightens its screws on the slumping performances, Gambhir faces a make-or-break Test campaign against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The series is unarguably Gambhir’s biggest ‘Test’ to sustain the India coach job in the longest format.

It has been reported that Gambhir could see his role as Team India’s head coach being taken away from him if India fail to do well in Australia. While the BCCI intends to stick with Gambhir as the white-ball coach, a poor show Down Under could be the final nail in the coffin for him in red-ball cricket.

According to a report in Dainik Jagran, if the Indian team fails in Australia too, the BCCI could ask a specialist like VVS Laxman to take up the coach’s role in Test cricket while Gambhir would stay put only in ODIs and T20Is.

It isn’t yet known if Gambhir would accept such a change, if it comes down to this. If the Border-Gavaskar Trophy remains a closely-fought contest, the BCCI might have a tough decision on its hands to make.

Gautam Gambhir Not On Same Page With Rohit Sharma & Co? Report Makes Big ‘Division’ Claim

Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has come under a lot of criticism following the 0-3 whitewash in the Test series against New Zealand.

Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has come under a lot of criticism following the 0-3 whitewash in the Test series against New Zealand. The Rohit Sharma-led side was completely outplayed by the visitors as they slumped to three consecutive losses at home. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) conducted a review of the series defeat on Friday with skipper Rohit Sharma, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and Gambhir in attendance along with BCCI secretary Jay Shah and president Roger Binny. A number of topics were discussed and a report by PTI claimed that Gambhir and the team think-tank are currently not “on the same page” when it comes to certain decisions regarding the team.

“It can’t be confirmed whether Gambhir’s coaching style was questioned or not but it is understood that some people in the Indian team think tank aren’t on same page with the chief coach.”

“The selections of T20 specialist all-rounder Nitish Reddy and rookie pacer Harshit Rana, with only 10 matches in Ranji Trophy have not been unanimous to say the least,” the PTI report stated.

Fast bowler Harshit Rana and all-rounder Nitish Reddy were top performers in the IPL 2024 but their inclusion for the upcoming Test series against Australia has reportedly caused a bit of division. The report claimed that their lack of experience means that the duo did not enjoy “unanimous” support.

There were also discussions about Gambhir’s style of coaching which is very different from his predecessor Rahul Dravid and how the team is getting used to it.

“There’s something seriously wrong…”: Kumble on India’s batting against NZ spinners

Former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble has said that there is something wrong with Indian batters’ play against spin and the team needs to sit down and introspect.

“There’s something seriously wrong…”: Kumble on India’s batting against NZ spinners

Former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble has said that there is something wrong with Indian batters’ play against spin and the team needs to sit down and introspect.

Indian team succumbed as the spin duo of Ajaz Patel and Glenn Phillips spun New Zealand to a 25-run win over India in the third Test at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, handing the hosts their first-ever series whitewash at home in a Test series of three or more matches.

Speaking on JioCinema, Kumble said that the batters failed to make any adjustments against spin.

“This has consistently happened over the last three Test matches. Whenever the spinners come on, there hasn’t been a noticeable improvement from one game to the next. A couple of players have made certain adjustments, which has helped in the batting lineup, but collectively, as a batting unit, they haven’t been able to avoid those collapses. This has happened far too often in a single session, which is a concern,” said Kumble.

“For this lineup to say, ‘There’s nothing wrong’ I think there’s something seriously wrong here. The most challenging part is accepting that there’s a problem. I’m sure that when this Indian team sits down to introspect, they’ll recognize that there is indeed a serious issue that needs to be addressed,” he added.

Kumble said that while Kiwi spinner Ajaz Patel was expected to be dangerous, what was surprising was the support he got from part-time spinner Glenn Phillips, who took eight wickets in the series.

“I thought he bowled very well, sticking to disciplined areas. Of course, they were under pressure when Rishabh Pant was at the crease, but outside of that, New Zealand seemed confident that if they could dismiss Pant, they would have a strong chance. And that is exactly how it played out,” he concluded.

The entire series was full of collapses for Team India. While in the first Test at Bengaluru, India was skittled out for just 46 runs after electing to bat first on a pace friendly wicket in overcast conditions and in the next innings, they faced another batting collapse just after getting a lead, giving NZ a target of just 107 runs.

In the second Test, India did bundle out Kiwis for 259 in the first innings, but themselves faced another poor batting outing to be all out for 156 runs. Later, while chasing 359 runs, Indian stars dissappointed once again, skittling out for 245 runs after being 127/2 at one point.

In the third and final Test in Mumbai, it was another low-scoring affair and India was presented it with perhaps its easiest chase of the series: 147 runs. However, except for a fighting fifty from Rishabh Pant, the Indian batting fell like a pack of cards and was bundled out for 121 runs.

Harsha Bhogle Sums Up Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma’s Downfall With Damning Stats

Harsha Bhogle called out Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s catastrophic performances in India’s home Test campaign this season.

Team India’s stalwarts tasted dirt once again as New Zealand spinners ran riot in the second innings of the Wankhede Test. Chasing a target of 147 runs to win the third and final match of the series, India lost half of their team for just 29 runs. There were huge expectations from the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to bail out the team and earn a consolation win. Both fell prey to the tricky of New Zealand spinners on Sunday.

While Rohit was dismissed looking to go for a big hit against Kiwi pacer Matt Henry, Kohli was undone by ‘local boy’ Ajaz Patel. In fact, Rohit’s rash shot was severely criticised by commentator Harsha Bhogle, who struggled to wrap his head around the approach opted by India’s skipper.

“Trying to get my head round Rohit Sharma’s approach. Struggling. That was a wicket on a platter and ends a disappointing home season for him with 133 in 10 innings,” Harsha posted on X (formerly Twitter) after Rohit’s dismissal.

Kohli, who only has one fifty-plus score in this series, was dismissed for a single run from 7 balls. Harsha highlighted how poor Kohli and Rohit have been this home Test campaign for India.

“Kohli 192 in 10 innings. Rohit 133. It has been a forgettable home season for the big two,” the renowned commentator wrote on social media.

Gambhir under scanner, BCCI likely to snatch power after New Zealand debacle: ‘Shastri didn’t have that access’

Since Gautam Gambhir’s appointment, India suffered an ODI series loss in Sri Lanka and a home Test series whitewash against New Zealand

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir (L) and assistant coach Ryan Neil ten Doeschate arrive for a practice session on the eve of their third Test cricket match against New Zealand, at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on October 31(AFP)

Just like the senior batters of the Indian team, the performance of head coach Gautam Gambhir is too under the scanner after a disastrous Test series defeat against New Zealand on Sunday. It was India’s first-ever whitewash in a Test contest (minimum of three matches) at home and a second series defeat for India since the appointment of Gambhir in July, the other being against Sri Lanka (0-2) in an ODI contest in August.

According to a report in the PTI, Gambhir’s fate relies entirely on the impending tour of Australia where India play five Tests as part of the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar series. India will not only look to retain the title, having won both their last two tours of Australia but also have the World Test Championship final qualification on the line. Having suffered a brutal and unprecedented whitewash at home, India, who dropped to the second spot in the table, have to avoid a loss or more than a solitary draw against Australia to make the final for the third straight time.

The report further revealed that unless a remarkable turnaround, BCCI might curb Gambhir’s power, having been given a free hand in selection matters, unlike his predecessors, Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid.

Some of the concerns raised against Gambhir, according to the report, has been his insistence on a rank turner in Mumbai for the third Test against New Zealand despite it being no secret that the Indian batting line-up has increasingly become vulnerable against spin over the last few years. Moreover, questions have also been raised on a few of his tactical calls during the recent home series like the decision to send Mohammed Siraj as night-watchman on the second evening of the third Test and Sarfaraz Khan at No.8 in the first innings.

Gambhir given free hand in selection matters

According to the BCCI rules, head coaches have no say in selection matters, which was often raised by Shastri, both during his tenure and following the end of his successful stint, and his successor Dravid. But the board made an exception, considering the importance of the Australia tour, and allowed Gambhir to be part of the selection meeting.

“Gautam Gambhir was given access which his predecessors Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid didn’t have. The BCCI’s rule book doesn’t allow coaches to be a part of the selection committee meetings, but for Australia tour selection meeting, an exception was made.

“The head coach was allowed to attend considering the magnitude of the tour,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

Gambhir has also had influences on selection matters since his appointment in July, having played a key role in Suryakumar Yadav pipping Hardik Pandya in the race to India T20I captaincy after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the format.

Why Rishabh Pant Decided To Leave Delhi Capitals? Report Reveals Eye-Opening Reasons

As per a report, Pant was left unhappy by several decisions taken by the GMR Group, co-owners of Delhi Capitals.

An interesting piece of information has been revealed following Rishabh Pant not being retained by Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. Pant’s nine-year connection with the 2020 finalists came to an end as he was released, with Axar Patel being the franchise’s first retention. However, a new report has revealed that Pant was left unhappy by the decisions taken by co-owners GMR Group, who will run the franchise for the next two years. This reportedly includes DC’s change in coaching staff.

As per a report by PTI, Pant was left dissatisfied by the decision to appoint Hemang Badani as the head coach and Venugopal Rao as the Director of Cricket at DC.

Moreover, it has been reported that Pant was also unhappy about his powers being curbed by the GMR Group. Earlier, it had been reported that Delhi Capitals were considering stripping captaincy off Pant and handing it to Axar Patel.

Pant, who had been bought by the Delhi Capitals in 2016, had been retained through two previous mega auctions, and had even attended previous mega auctions in person.

Due to the 50-50 ownership of Delhi Capitals shared between the JSW Group and the GMR Group, each owner runs the franchise in two-year cycles. 2025 and 2026 will be under the direction of GMR Group.

Under their leadership, DC decided to part ways with Ricky Ponting, who had been their head coach for seven years. Legendary Indian Sourav Ganguly was also replaced as the men’s team’s Director of Cricket.

Rohit Sharma’s first reaction after being retained by Mumbai Indians for IPL 2025: ‘Since I’ve retired…’

Rohit Sharma continues to be a Mumbai Indians player, being announced as one of the players retained by the franchise for IPL 2025.

Rohit Sharma will continue to represent the Mumbai Indians, a team he has become synonymous with over many years and many successes in the IPL. The joint-most successful franchise managed to hang on to their former captain, despite some rumours that Rohit might look to move on from his hometown team in the upcoming auction.

Speaking on the matter to JioCinema, Rohit reflected on the decision to remain in Mumbai, and what it means to him as a native of the city and someone who has played some of his best cricket for the franchise.

“I have played so much cricket in Mumbai, this is the place where I started my cricket career. So this city is very, very special. Obviously, when you play for such a long time, you create so many memories with the team,” said Rohit in the interview. While he has been replaced by Hardik Pandya as captain, he will continue to open for the franchise.

While Rohit captained Mumbai to the IPL 2020 title, they haven’t had too much success in the years since. Rohit stated that he hopes to help edit their fortunes: “We haven’t had the best of the season in the last two or three years. But we are quite determined to change that.”

‘Mazak bana diya hai Pakistan ka’: Basit Ali delivers hilarious rant after Gary Kirsten’s exit

NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has unleashed a fiery rant after Gary Kirsten’s abrupt departure as Pakistan’s limited-overs coach. Basit, who shared his frustration on his YouTube channel, lamented the deteriorating state of Pakistan cricket.

“Pakistan’s cricket is deteriorating, and I don’t want it to decline. In the coming days, it will get worse,” he remarked.

Basit expressed his frustration that foreign coaches like Kirsten are often hired without first being tested at the junior levels.

Drawing comparisons to global practices, he pointed out that Australia and India adopted a more measured approach, with Rodney Marsh and Rahul Dravid working with grassroots programs before ascending to senior roles.

“Mazak bana diya hai Pakistan ka (They’ve made a joke out of Pakistan). And the establishment is 90 percent involved in it,” Basit said, hinting at internal interference in cricketing decisions.

Babar Azam.’ So you don’t want Rizwan as captain, and you don’t want Shaheen Afridi—is this Pakistan’s team or Gary Kirsten’s team?”

He further ridiculed Kirsten’s potential distractions, quipping, “Next, he’ll say, ‘My academy is running in Cape Town,’ and then join some PSL franchise. Why do you even give opportunities to people like this who can’t spend their time in Pakistan?”

Spain’s Rodri wins Ballon d’Or for best player in the world

Spain and Manchester City midfielder Rodri won the Ballon d’Or award for the best player in the world on Monday, beating Brazil’s Vinicius Jr and England’s Jude Bellingham, both of Real Madrid, to the prestigious prize.
Barcelona’s Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati won the women’s award for a second time.
Rodri, a first-time winner of the award, was instrumental in helping his team win an unprecedented fourth successive Premier League trophy last season. He was also named best player at this year’s European Championship after Spain lifted a record-extending fourth title.

The 28-year-old Madrid native is the first defensive midfielder to win the Ballon d’Or since Lothar Matthaus in 1990 and the third Spaniard to claim the prize after Alfredo Di Stefano (1957 and 1959) and Luis Suarez (1960).
While the award has been dominated by Spanish league players, no Spaniard had won since Barcelona great Luis Suarez more than 60 years ago, despite Spain’s “golden generation” that won the 2010 World Cup, the 2008 and 2012 Euros.
But Rodri, the player City coach Pep Guardiola said is “the best midfielder in the world”, finally ended that run with a unique skillset that has made his club the dominant force in England and helped Spain rule Europe again.
“Today is not a victory for me, it is for Spanish football, for so many players who have not won it and have deserved it, like (Andres) Iniesta, Xavi (Hernandez), Iker (Casillas), Sergio Busquets, so many others. It is for Spanish football and for the figure of the midfielder,” Rodri said on stage at the ceremony.
“Today many friends have written to me and have told me that football has won, for giving visibility to so many midfielders who have a job in the shadows and today it is coming to light.
“I’m a regular guy with values, who studies, who tries to do things right and doesn’t try to follow the stereotypes and even so I have been able to get to the top, and it is thanks to all of you.”

NO MESSI OR RONALDO

Rodri became the third person not named Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the award since 2008. It was the first time since 2003 in which neither Messi nor Ronaldo made the final 30-man list of nominees.
Portugal’s Ronaldo, who has won the award five times and was the last Premier League player to win it in 2008, also failed to receive a nomination last year after moving to Saudi Arabia. Messi, who won for a record eighth time in 2023, missed out despite Argentina’s Copa America triumph.

“Overconfident”, Can Neither Play Spin Nor Pace: Ex Pakistan Star Tears Into Team India

Team India continues to face heavy criticism after their Test series defeat against New Zealand, first in 12 years at home.

Criticism continues to be thrown at Team India’s face from all corners after the defeats in the first two Tests against New Zealand. In what was the first home Test series defeat for Rohit Sharma and his men in 12 years, the batting unit’s failure has been highlihted as the biggest contributing factor. Even former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali tore into the Indian team, saying the players looked overconfident against the Kiwis but didn’t manage to play either spin or pace.

“I had said chasing 350-plus will be too difficult. There had to be a ton from one of the top three batters. India’s batting got exposed. In the first match, the Kiwi pacers took 17 wickets. In the second Test, spinners took 19 wickets. India players were neither able to play pacers well nor spinners. On a track that had pace and bounce (Bengaluru), India lost and on a spinning track, India lost as well,” Basit said on his YouTube channel.

“The match India won against Bangladesh in two days and New Zealand’s 2-0 defeat in Sri Lanka, the team might have thought they would beat the Kiwis easily. This means, that Indian management and Indian players were overconfident. New Zealand did their homework. They had nothing to lose. No one would have thought that the Kiwis might be able to defeat India. Even New Zealand themselves wouldn’t have thought of something like this. But they did their homework,” he added.

From Rawalpindi To Pune, Spinners Rule The Pitch, Create New Records, Milestones And Memories

During the two ongoing Test matches between India and New Zealand at Pune’s Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) stadium and the third Pakistan-England Test at Rawalpindi, the domination of spin on the opening days has stood out.

During the two ongoing Test matches between India and New Zealand at Pune’s Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) stadium and the third Pakistan-England Test at Rawalpindi, the domination of spin on the opening days has stood out, with the tweakers established new records, milestones and memories from “Pindi to Pune”. In the second Test between the Kiwis and India, the Indian team chose a combination of three frontline spinners in Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin on what was a spin-friendly surface, with all three having exceptional quality in their batting as well when in full flow.

The move to include Washington, playing his first Test in over three years since that iconic Border-Gavaskar Trophy sealing win at The Gabba in Brisbane against Australia in January 2021, raised questions as he was picked over a much more accomplished and senior as a spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, who has had to sit out often during Test matches due to Ashwin-Jadeja’s abilities as batters.

When Kiwis were 197/3, with Rachin Ravindra looking set for another century and only Ravichandran Ashwin having made some notable, but not-so-impacful dents in Kiwis’ innings, a lot was being said about Kuldeep’s absence from the field. However, Washington, who had bowled tightly so far, responded to the chatter in the most dominating way possible, taking the next seven wickets with his masterful movement with the ball. He triggered Kiwis’ collapse from 197/3 to 259 all out in the first innings.

Washington went on to register his career-best Test figures and his maiden Test fifer. He and Ashwin, two Tamil Nadu stars, teamed up to take all ten Kiwi wickets on day one, making it only sixth instance of spinners getting all the ten wickets on day one of a Test in India.

Sundar had cleaned bowled five batters in his spell, including Rachin, Tom Blundell, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee and Ajaz Patel. He joined stars and older players like Jadeja, Anil Kumble, Jasubhai Patel and Bapu Nadkarni to be among players to have accomplished most “bowled” dismissals during a Test innings in India.

Sundar’s figures were the third-best by an Indian against New Zealand in Tests and the joint-best along with Ashwin in the 21st century. Spinner Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan, who also happened to play for Tamil Nadu, had registered all-time best figures of 8/72 against Kiwis in 1965 at Delhi, followed by Erapalli Prasanna’s 8/76 at Auckland in 1975.

Ashwin also overtook Nathan Lyon to become the leading wicket-taker in the history of the ICC World Test Championship with 189 scalps in just 39 matches, as compared to Australian legend Nathan Lyon’s 187 wickets in 43 matches. He also overtook Lyon (530 wickets) to become Test’s seventh-highest wicket-taker, with 531 scalps.

On the other hand at Rawalpindi, the pitch was expected to spin from early on. While England had made over 500 runs within a single day (including four centuries) the last time they were at the venue back in 2022, it was the complete opposite this time around.

England was up for a surprise as they collapsed from 70/1 to 118/6, as Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook and Ben Stokes all departed in quick succession. Jamie Smith (89 in 119 balls, with five fours and six sixes) and Gus Atkinson (39 in 71 balls, with five fours) counter-attacked and averted a complete collapse by taking England to 267 in 68.2 overs.

All the overs bowled in the innings were bowled by spinners, the first time in 142 years that no pacers bowled any over in a Test inning. The previous such instance was in February 1882 in Sydney, where two Australian slow bowlers – Joey Palmer and Edwin Evans – bowled 115 overs between them to bowl England out for 133, as per Wisden.

All-Round India A Defeat Pakistan A By 7 Runs In ACC Men’s T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup

India A excelled in all three departments, clinching a thrilling seven-run victory over Pakistan to kick off their ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup campaign on an exhilarating note.

India A excelled in all three departments, clinching a thrilling seven-run victory over Pakistan to kick off their ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup campaign on an exhilarating note in Al Amerat, Oman on Saturday. India’s top order fired in unison as it posted 183 for 8 with Tilak Verma top-scoring with a 35-ball 44 after opting to bat. Pacers Anshul Kamboj (3/33) and Rasikh Salam (2/30) and spinner Nishant Sindhu (2/15) shared eight wickets amongst themselves to restrict Pakistan to 176/7.

Not only did India shine with the bat and ball, they also delivered an impressive performance in the field, particularly through Ramandeep Singh, who made a stunning catch and saved vital runs in the closing moments.

Openers Abhishek Sharma (35 off 22) and Prabhsimran Singh (36 off 19) unleashed an aggressive assault on the pace attack, sending the ball flying across the field.

Abhishek slapped consecutive boundaries in the first over, while Prabhsimran followed suit by dispatching Zaman Khan for a four and a six in the next over, setting a vibrant tone.

Together, they struck eight boundaries and five sixes, propelling India A to an impressive 68 without loss during the Powerplay.

However, the introduction of spin after the Powerplay slowed their momentum, leading to the loss of both Abhishek and Prabhsimran in quick succession. This brought skipper Verma (44) and Nehal Wadhera (25) to the crease.

As the pitch became increasingly sluggish, Verma took on the anchor role, while Wadhera and Ramandeep (17) found the boundaries.

After losing two wickets to the pace of all-rounder Anshul Kamboj early in the chase, Yasir Khan (33) and Qasim Akram (27) began to attack fiercely.

However, a spectacular catch by Ramandeep at deep midwicket broke their partnership, dismissing Yasir. In the same over, left-arm spinner Nishant made his mark by removing Akram.

Arafat Minhas top-scored for Pakistan with 29-ball 41 but it was Abdul Samad who blazed away to 25 off 15 balls. Samad walked in when Pakistan needed 58 more to win but the 26-year-old hit a six and two back-to-back boundaries off Vaibhav Arora in the 16th over to bring down the equation to 42 off 24 balls.

Watch: Sarfaraz Khan’s Epic Celebration as he Roars After Hitting Maiden Test Hundred

Sarfaraz Khan took 110 deliveries to get to his century. (BCCI Photo)

Sarfaraz Khan produced an entertaining show with the bat in India’s second innings currently underway in Bengaluru to bring up a quick century – the first of his Test career – on the fourth morning of the first Test against New Zealand on Saturday. Sarfaraz got to the milestone with a beautiful punch through covers for a four, taking just 110 deliveries.

Soon after reaching the three figures, Sarfaraz soaked in the moment while holding his two arms aloft and pointed his bat towards the Indian dressing room while roaring in delight.

He thus became the 22nd Indian batter in Test history to score a duck and a century in the same Test. Shubman Gill, who is missing this contest due to a fitness issue, recently registered a duck and a century in the Chennai Test against Bangladesh.

Sarfaraz made his Test debut earlier this year during the home series against England and justified the hype around him by scoring 200 runs in five innings at an average of 50 including three half-centuries. He didn’t play in the two Tests against Bangladesh but with Gill missing out in Bengaluru, a spot opened up with India bringing him into their playing XI for the series opener against New Zealand.

Babar Azam’s Reaction Goes Viral After Test Replacement Kamran Ghulam Slams Debut Ton

Pakistan cricket team batter Kamran Ghulam impressed everyone on debut as he slammed a gritty century on Day 1 of the second Test match against England.

Pakistan cricket team batter Kamran Ghulam impressed everyone on debut as he slammed a gritty century on Day 1 of the second Test match against England on Tuesday. Ghulam looked at ease against the England bowlers and he ended up scoring 118 off 224 deliveries with the help of 11 fours and 1 six. The 29-year-old replaced Babar Azam in the starting XI after the former Pakistan captain was dropped following a dismal run. Following the ton, Babar took to social media to congratulate Ghulam on his achievement as he wrote on his Instagram story – “Well played Kamran”.

Kamran Ghulam hit a superb century on his debut to guide Pakistan to 259-5 on the opening day of the second Test against England in Multan on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old replaced out-of-form Babar Azam at number four and foiled England’s aggressive bowling and fielding to score 118.

At close of an even day’s play, Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha were unbeaten with 37 and five respectively.

The day ended Ghulam’s frustrating long wait for a place in the Pakistan team after he smashed a national record 1,249 runs in the 2020 domestic season.

Ghulam led a fightback after the hosts, who won the toss, were struggling at 19-2 with England spinner Jack Leach striking twice in the first hour.

Ghulam added 149 for the defiant third wicket with Saim Ayub, who hit a career-best 77, and another 65 for the fifth wicket with Rizwan.

He reached three figures with a boundary off spinner Joe Root, taking 280 minutes and becoming Pakistan’s 12th batter to score a century in his first Test.

With just half an hour before stumps, Ghulam was bowled by spinner Shoaib Bashir, ending a resolute 323-minute knock spiced with 11 fours and a six.

How BCCI medical team’s plans for Mohammed Shami went up in smoke: Details of pacer’s career-threatening injury

Mohammed Shami potentially is still some gas in the tank, a few more miles in his legs, but will the injuries please stay away?

Mohammed Shami is in doubt for the Australia tour(PTI)

Mohammed Shami’s last competitive outing was on 19 November 2023, during India’s heartbreaking loss to Australia in the final of the 50-over World Cup. Having mostly bowled first-change, behind Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, from the time he was drafted in for the league fixture against New Zealand in Dharamsala, Shami was surprisingly given the second over in the title clash, because he was unwell and wanted to bowl when at his freshest.

The experienced pacer struck with his first legal ball, having David Warner caught at first slip by Virat Kohli. But that was as good as it got for Shami – and India. He finished with one for 47 from seven overs which increasingly became bereft of venom as Australia romped home by six wickets with 42 deliveries to spare.

Neither Shami, nor the principal stakeholders in Indian cricket, would have imagined then that he would spend a long time on the sidelines, tending to an Achilles tendon injury that necessitated a right heel surgery in London in February. If Shami’s personal distress didn’t exactly spill over to the national side, it’s because India had no overseas Tests scheduled for the first 11 and a half months of 2024, apart from the Cape Town outing against South Africa in early January which the visitors won in any case inside two days.

Shami’s careful rehab, overseen assiduously by the Sports Science team at the National Cricket Academy, progressed excellently, raising the genuine prospect of him easing back into the international fold at some stage during the three-Test home series against New Zealand. A meticulous Return to Play protocol was worked out – players recovering from injury must mandatorily prove match-fitness in a game scenario – and it was decided that he would play in one of Bengal’s early Ranji Trophy matches before being brought back to the national set-up.

Hardik Pandya falls down laughing, Suryakumar and Arshdeep can’t keep calm as Samson wins Player of the Match award

There were loud cheers for Sanju Samson, not just from the Hyderabad crowd, but also from his teammates as he won the Player of the Match award

Sanju Samson won the Player of the Match award in 3rd T20I against Bangladesh

India were a happy camp on Saturday following yet another flawless show against Bangladesh. The Suryakumar Yadav-led side won the series finale by 133 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad and subsequently scripted another clean sweep under head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Sanju Samson played a vital role in India scripting the whitewash as the 29-year-old smashed a 47-ball 111 to become the first wicketkeeper-batter from the country to notch up a ton in the international format. Getting to the mark in just 40 balls, en route to which he even smashed five sixes in an over, Samson also became the second-fastest Indian to the feat. His knock, along with a 173-run stand for the second wicket with captain Suryakumar saw India post their highest-ever T20I total of 297/6 before the bowlers restricted Bangladesh to just 164 for seven.

There were loud cheers for Samson, who finally proved his worth, and earned himself a longer rope in the format, not just from the crowd, but also from the teammates themselves. In fact, when Samson was awarded the Game-Changer award and the Player of the Match trophy, most of the Indian players couldn’t keep calm. Visuals showed that all-rounder Hardik Pandya fell on the ground laughing, while Suryakumar and fast bowler Arshdeep Singh seemed to cheer the loudest. Other players like Ravi Bishnoi, Tilak Varma and Abhishek Sharma joined in as well.

Samson explains team reaction

The reaction from the fellow Indian players left presenter and former India cricketer Murali Kartik curious during the post-match presentation as he asked Samson about it, and the Kerala-based cricketer too, seemed amused.

“The dressing room energy and the boys really have lots of happiness fo

r me. I am very happy. They are happy that I did well,” he said looking at his teammates.

Samson also opened up on how the India leadership group backed him despite his failures in the Sri Lanka series earlier this summer, where he incurred back-to-back dismissals for duck.

India Can Still Reach Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 Semifinals Despite Loss vs Australia – Here’s How

India’s hopes of reaching the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 semifinals were dealt a massive blow as the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side slumped to a 9-run loss against Australia in a crucial Group A encounter.

India’s hopes of reaching the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 semifinals were dealt a massive blow as the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side slumped to a 9-run loss against Australia in a crucial Group A encounter in Sharjah on Sunday. India were completely outplayed by Australia as Harmanpreet’s half-century could not clinch the match for her side. As a result, Australia qualified for the semifinals with 8 points from 4 matches but India’s fortunes still hangs in balance. India have 4 points from 4 matches with their losses coming against Australia and New Zealand. New Zealand have 4 while Pakistan have 2.

However, India can still qualify for the semis if Pakistan can beat New Zealand in the final Group A match on Monday. If Pakistan win, they will have 4 points along with India and New Zealand. However, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side will qualify for the knockout stage thanks to a better Net Run Rate (NRR).

India lost to defending champions Australia by nine runs in their last group match to find themselves in a difficult position to qualify for the semifinals of the women’s T20 World Cup, on Sunday.

Chasing 152 for a win, India ended at 142 for 9 with captain Harmanpreet Kaur top-scoring with 54 not out off 47 balls. Deepti Sharma and Shafali Verma chipped in with 29 and 20 respectively.

India ended their Group A campaign on four points after two wins and two losses.

Australia, who topped the group with all four wins, qualified for the semifinals while New Zealand (4 points) need a win against Pakistan on Monday to make it to the last-four stage.

Sanju Samson smashes a brilliant six vs Bangladesh(X)

Sanju Samson showcased his brilliance in the third and final T20I against Bangladesh, leading India to a commanding victory in what turned out to be a one-sided affair. The match, held at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Saturday, saw Samson at his imperious best as he smashed his maiden T20I century, posing his contention for the place as one of India’s most explosive hitters.

Opening the innings for the Indian team, Samson took full advantage of the batting-friendly conditions and made his intentions clear from the outset. Despite India losing Abhishek Sharma early for just 4 runs, Samson kept the pressure on Bangladesh’s bowlers with a remarkable display of aggressive stroke play. Right from the first over, he unleashed an array of shots, timing the ball beautifully and keeping the scoreboard ticking at a brisk pace.

One particular shot in the 8th over stood out, leaving both spectators and commentators in awe. Facing Mustafizur Rahman, who bowled a back-of-length delivery outside off, Samson went deep in his crease and effortlessly dispatched the ball over covers for a towering six. It was a shot that showcased not only his power but also his technique, making it clear that Samson was in the mood to produce something special.

Arundhati ticks bowling in quest for all-rounder’s status

The India pacer’s incisive bowling helped a team low on confidence see off Pakistan in the Women’s T20 World Cup

India’s Arundhati Reddy in action against Pakistan during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Dubai. (AFP)

Chandigarh: It wasn’t an India performance all anticipated against Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday, but they still scraped past Pakistan for a six-wicket win to keep semi-final hopes alive in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. India owed it to their bowlers and all-rounder Arundhati Reddy led the way, returning brilliant figures of 4-0-19-3.

Had Reddy not applied the brake, Pakistan could have added 10-15 runs more than the 105/8 they finished with and that would have brought more pressure on India who had found batting second tough in the heavy loss to New Zealand. Medium-pacer Arundhati removed the set Nida Dar (28 off 34b), Omaima Sohail (3) and Aliya Riaz (4) to push Pakistan on the backfoot. Her send-off to Nida though drew a reprimand from the ICC match referee.

Having beaten Sri Lanka in their previous game, Pakistan’s batters looked in control with Nida doing most of the scoring, but Arundhati, declared Player-of-the-Match, and spinner Shreyanka Patil (2/12) helped peg back the innings.

This performance wasn’t just special for Arundhati, who made a comeback only a few months ago after three years, but also for her mother Bhagya Reddy, a Hyderabad school teacher who had raised her cricket-mad daughter and son by herself.

Former India women’s team fielding coach Biju George too was delighted with Arundhati’s best T20I figures. Had George not persuaded her into leaving Railways and joining the Kerala Cricket Association last season to develop her all-round abilities, the 27-year-old may not have earned her national comeback.

It was during her stint with Delhi Capitals (DC) in the first season of Women’s Premier League that George saw her impressive T20 skills and suggested that she make the switch. Fielding coach with DC in WPL, he felt the league helped her realise her potential rubbing shoulders with the world’s best players and a top-notch coaching staff.

“I remember meeting Aru in Hyderabad after WPL-I; she was very disturbed about her future in domestic cricket. She knew she would make an India return through domestic cricket success and Railways wasn’t giving her enough opportunities. Going back to Hyderabad would not have served the purpose as they hardly reach the knockout stage in T20s and one-dayers. So, I asked her to join the Kerala team,” said George, who was the India fielding coach in 2018 when Arundhati made her T20I debut.

Leaving the Indian Railways would have meant quitting her job. She did not want to burden her mother financially but the WPL contract meant she could take the chance. Arundhati worked on her bowling skills, improved her fitness and batting. She wanted to be India’s best T20 player and two seasons of WPL helped improve her confidence.

India’s Women’s T20 World Cup semifinal hopes remain in threat despite Pakistan win; Mandhana defends sluggish batting

The win against Pakistan did keep India alive in the race to make the semifinal from Group A, but only by a bare margin.

India’s Smriti Mandhana leaves the field after being dismissed during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup cricket match between Pakistan and India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai on October 6, 2024(AFP)

India survived a scare on Sunday evening at the Dubai International Stadium in their six-wicket win against Pakistan. This was just a day after they suffered a shocking 58-run defeat against New Zealand in the Women’s T20 World Cup opener at the same venue. The win did keep India alive in the race to make the semifinal from Group A, but only by a bare margin.

On a hot afternoon in Dubai, Pakistan captain Fatima Sana, with the aim to put India under pressure with a strong total on the board, and give themselves a chance to inch closer to the semis after a stunning win against Sri Lanka in their opener on Thursday, opted to bat first. However, Arundhati Reddy and Shreyanka Patil, who picked five wickets between themselves, helped India fold Pakistan for just 105 for eight.

For India, the equation was simple, get a win by a huge margin. Why? The team lost by 58 runs against New Zealand, which left them at the bottom of the Group A table with a net run rate of -2.9. However, India put on a sluggish batting performance in the chase, where only 25 runs came in the powerplay at the cost of one wicket, which only improved to 61 for two at one stage in that game, which itself left their chances in the match hanging in the balance.

India eventually won with seven balls to spare, but it served little or no to their NRR cause.

Where do India’s chances stand after Pakistan win?

A win by a massive margin could have left India at the third spot in the Group A table, ahead of Pakistan, but behind defending champions Australia and New Zealand. But the sluggish chase saw India’s NRR marginally improve to -1.217 which is inferior, compared to Pakistan’s -0.555, implying that they now stand in the fourth spot.

India are still not out of the semifinal race, but another poor batting show in their next game against Sri Lanka, at the same venue, on October 9, could dampen their chances despite a victory. A win in that fashion could only leave India in a do-or-die situation against Australia in their final group game. However, a victory in an emphatic fashion could help their cause to an extent, with New Zealand expected to lose against Australia on Tuesday.

“When I Was Playing Under Rohit Sharma…”: Suryakumar Yadav On Becoming Captain In IPL

Suryakumar Yadav’s stock has risen since that last IPL and now that he is leading the national team, it remains to be seen what Mumbai Indians decide in the lead up to the next season.

Suryakumar Yadav is one of the pillars in the MI team

Suryakumar Yadav is enjoying his time as India T20 captain and dropped enough hints on Saturday about his ambitions of leading an IPL franchise is near future. Mumbai Indians would ideally like to retain Suryakumar but being a current India captain, it would also be interesting as to what is his expectation from the five-time champion outfit. Hardik Pandya grabbed the limelight last year when MI removed Rohit Sharma unceremoniously to put the colourful Baroda all-rounder on the hot seat, the move that backfired badly.

Suryakumar’s stock has risen since that last IPL and now that he is leading the national team, it remains to be seen what Mumbai Indians decide in the lead up to the next season.

On the ever of the T20 series opener against Bangladesh, Suryakumar spoke to media about his time as India captain besides handing the query on IPL captaincy ambitions on a lighter note.

“Aapne googly daal diya (laughs) (You put me in a spot with a wrong ‘un). Really enjoying this new role (as India captain). When I was playing under Rohit bhai’s captaincy in MI, I used to give my inputs whatever I felt at that time.

“For India also feeling good. I captained against Sri Lanka previously against Australia and South Africa also. I have learnt from other captains on how to take the team forward. Aage dekhte hain. Chalte rahta hain. Baaki aapko pata toh chal hee jayega (Let’s see how it goes. Rest you will know in due course of time),” that was Surya’s witty response to the IPL leadership question.

Why India have no option but to beat Pakistan by big margin to keep Women’s T20 World Cup semifinal hopes alive

However, a loss against Pakistan, who on Thursday scripted a stunning win against Sri Lanka, could effectively knock out India

India lost by 58 runs against New Zealand in their Women’s T20 World Cup opener

India had reached the final in 2020, and made the semis in 2023, where they almost beat eventual winners Australia. There were, hence, high hopes from the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side, even as they found themselves in the group defeat in the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup. However, a shock loss against New Zealand, who lost 16 of their last 19 T20Is, including a 10-match losing streak heading into the match, left India on the verge of a potential group-stage knock out.

The bowlers never got their line and lengths right, amid a flurry of fielding errors as New Zealand capitalised to set up a target of 161 runs in their World Cup opener at the Dubai International Stadium on Friday. India hoped to bounce back in the second innings, with dew expected to play a crucial role, but none of the batters fired. Their hope eventually faded away at the halfway mark in the chase. India were folded for just 102 runs with an over to spare.

Why India have no option but to beat Pakistan by a big margin?

After at least one match for each team, India sit at the bottom of the table, with the worst net run rate of -2.9, even though Sri Lanka lost both their opening matches in the tournament. For India to make it through to the semis, they have to win all their remaining three matches, which includes the final group game against defending champions Australia. And they will have to start the journey uphill in their impending contest against Pakistan on Sunday in Dubai.

Not only do India have to beat Pakistan, against whom they have lost just twice in T20 World Cup history, the last being in 2016, and thrice overall in 15 encounters, but they have to win by an emphatic margin, given that the Fatima Sana-led side has an NRR of +1.55.

India’s Women’s T20WC semifinal chances takes major hit after New Zealand hammering: What Harmapreet and Co. need to do

India as good as knocked out after incurring a 58-run loss against New Zealand in their Women’s T20 World Cup opener

New Zealand team members congratulate Eden Carson, third from left, after she took the wicket of India’s Smriti Mandhana during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 match between India and New Zealand at Dubai International Stadium(AP)

Despite their overwhelming 9-4 record against India in T20Is, New Zealand weren’t the favourites in their Women’s T20 World Cup opener on Friday in Dubai, given their forgettable streak of 10 straight losses heading into the match. However, the Sophie Devine-led side ended their streak after hammering India, a title contender, by 58 runs. While the victory handed New Zealand a sigh of relief in the group of death, India have been left in a precarious spot over their semifinal chances.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur hailed the current Indian side as their best T20I team and was rather confident of ending the nation’s long-standing world-title drought in women’s cricket. However, India never turned up for the contest, neither with the bat, nor with the ball.

New Zealand were on the money from ball one, after opting to bat first in Dubai. The openers got the team off to an aggressive start, before captain Devine carried the momentum in the slog overs with her unbeaten knock of 57 which helped New Zealand set a 161-run target.

The India batters then looked clueless against the New Zealand attack as none of the batters fired , with the Women in Blue barely managing to cross the 100-run mark. They were eventually folded for just 102 with an over to spare as the White Ferns scripted an emphatic 58-run win against India.

India as good as knocked out

India found themselves in the group of death in the Women’s T20 World Cup, alongside defending champions Australia, arch-rivals Pakistan, New Zealand and reigning Asian champions Sri Lanka. While India will fancy their chances against Pakistan, against whom they have lost just twice in T20 World Cup history, last being in 2016, and thrice overall in 15 encounters, and against Sri Lanka, despite their recent loss against the side in the Women’s Asia Cup final in July, having lost just once in World Cup history, Australia and New Zealand were their only threats.

With New Zealand heading into the World Cup on the back of a poor run of show, India did look to try their luck, but were outperformed in all departments, en route to a heavy loss. Hence, if India do manage to defeat Pakistan and Sri Lanka in their Group A encounters, it only leaves Australia standing between them and a semifinal qualification.

Not all is wrong with Pakistan’s captains: Fatima Sana, 22, puts balm on ‘Babar Azam pain’, wins World Cup match alone

Captain Fatima Sana produced a Player of the Match performance to give Pakistan a winning start in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Fatima Sana produced a Player of the Match performance to give Pakistan a winning a start in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024(ICC)

At 22, Fatima Sana is among the youngest to lead in a Women’s T20 World Cup. It didn’t quite seem like that during the opening day of the tournament on Thursday. Fatima showed immense maturity and led from the front with both bat and ball to get Pakistan off to a winning start with a dominating 31-run victory against Sri Lanka in Sharjah. She became the youngest captain after Australia’s Meg Lanning to lead her side to a victory in a Women’s World Cup match.

It appeared like a tactical blunder when Fatima demoted herself to No.7 in the batting order despite being a No.5 for most matches in the lead-up to the tournament but the right-hander more than made up for it with her breezy knock of 30 off 20 balls that included three fours and a six.

Fatima’s knock helped Pakistan to 116 batting first before they took advantage of the conditions to stifle Sri Lanka’s chase.

With the ball too, she set the tone by picking the most important wicket of Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu (6) in the third over of the chase.

Pakistan lost their most experienced pacer, Diana Baig, in the first over when she pulled a calf muscle while running in to bowl the second ball of the Sri Lankan innings. Baig needed help from her teammates to limp off the field but the agonising sight did not deter captain Faitma, who took the challenge of bowling with the new ball and did a fine job.

At a time when Pakistan’s men’s cricket was tumultuous due to the surprising resignation of limited-overs skipper Babar Azam, Fatima’s all-around performance and leadership in the Women’s World Cup acted as a balm on the fans’ pain.

Pakistan spinners take over from Fatima Sana

Later, Omaima Sohail (2/17) and Nashra Sandhu (2/15) took the pace off the ball and suffocated Sri Lanka’s batting, making it difficult to find the boundary.

In the end, they managed 84 for nine in reply, with Pakistan up and running in Pool A, where Australia, India and New Zealand all lie in wait.

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first, but lost Gull Feroza in the second over for two as she was caught behind off the bowling of Sugandika Kumari (3/19).

Muneeba Ali tried to attack, even notching the first six of the tournament, but she was Kumari’s second victim for 11.

Chamari Athapaththu then got in on the act, removing Sidra Amin (12) with a return catch as they slipped to 32 for three.

Nida Dar and Omaima (18) tried to rebuild but their 25-run partnership was broken by Kavisha Dilhari, with Pakistan 57 for four at the halfway stage.

The wickets continued to fall, with Nida next to go for 23, closely followed by Tuba Hassan and Aliya Riaz, who went on successive balls from Athapaththu (3/18).

She could not complete the hat-trick, but when Diana Baig became Kumari’s third victim, Pakistan were in a world of trouble at 84 for eight.

Skipper Fatima, stepped up though, smashing a quickfire 30 before she fell in the final over as Pakistan were bowled out for 116 off the final ball of their 20 overs.

In reply, Pakistan made the big breakthrough early when Athapaththu was dismissed by Fatima in the third over, chipping to extra cover as she departed for just six.

Harshitha Samarawickrama followed not long after, clean bowled by Omaima when she tried to play across the line, removed for seven.

India vs Bangladesh: No More International Games In Kanpur After ‘Washout’ Row? Report Says…

Despite a rain-free morning and bright sunshine later in the day, day three’s play of the second Test between India and Bangladesh was called off without a ball being bowled at the Green Park Stadium.

Despite a rain-free morning and bright sunshine later in the day, day three’s play of the second Test between India and Bangladesh was called off without a ball being bowled at the Green Park Stadium. The unexpected cause? A ‘wet outfield’. Frustration grew as both teams remained at their hotel, while match officials inspected the field three times, all without covers. But there was no play, leading to two days now lost due to rain. Shiv Kumar, the pitch curator of the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) maintained that everything was under control in Kanpur. But he admitted to having confusion regarding the match officials’ reservations. “They gave us three different time for inspection but never told us what is the issue. Which area was wet or whatever is the problem. I told them that you can start the match but if you have any concern let me know,” he told IANS.

“IPL Needs MS Dhoni”: Fans React As BCCI Reintroduces Uncapped Player Rule

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reintroduced a rule for the uncapped category of Indian players ahead of IPL Auction 2025.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reintroduced a rule for the uncapped category of Indian players ahead of IPL Auction 2025. “A capped Indian player will become uncapped, if the player has in the last five calendar years preceding the year in which the relevant Season is held, not played in the starting XI in International Cricket (Test match, ODI, Twenty20 International) or does not have a Central Contract with BCCI. This will be applicable for Indian Players only,” announced BCCI in a release on Saturday.

This rule was there in place previously as well, but it got abolished after IPL 2021. However, its reintroduction means that MS Dhoni and several other retired Indian stars will be able to play IPL under the uncapped player category.

MS Dhoni last played for India in 2019 and he thus becomes truly eligible under this new rule change. Fans feel that the BCCI has reintroduced this rule only to keep Dhoni in IPL.

Notably, Dhoni coming under uncapped category will give his franchise Chennai Super Kings a cushion to rope in the legend that too without using any capped player slot.

‘Fake news’: Rishabh Pant rubbishes claims of approaching RCB for IPL 2025

A post on X claimed that Pant, the current captain of IPL team Delhi Capitals (DC), had approached the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in a bid to join them as their skipper, foreseeing a ‘captaincy vacancy’ in the team.

A seemingly irritated Rishabh Pant – India and Delhi Capitals’ star wicketkeeper-batter – has taken to social media platform X to voice his frustration over reports linking him with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

A post on X claimed that Pant, the current captain of IPL team Delhi Capitals (DC), had approached the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in a bid to join them as their skipper, foreseeing a ‘captaincy vacancy’ in the team. Pant was, however, turned down by the RCB management, according to the post.
The post further alleged that former RCB captain Virat Kohli was not keen on welcoming Pant in their team due to the latter’s “political tactics in the Indian team as well as in Delhi Capitals”.

26-year-old Rishabh Pant was quick to respond as he quashed all the claims made in the post, labeling it as “fake news”, and even accused the X user of “creating an untrustworthy environment for no reason”.

In a scornful reply to the post from his official X account, Pant said, “Fake news. Why do you guys spread so much fake news on social media (?). Be sensible guys, so bad. Don’t create untrustworthy environment for no reason. It’s not the first time and won’t be last but I had to put this out. Please always re check with your so called sources. Everyday it’s becoming worst. Rest it’s upto you guys. It’s wasn’t just for you it’s for a lot for people who is spreading misinformation. Tc”.

Rahul Dravid “Very Regimented, Gautam Gambhir Is…”: R Ashwin Decodes Stark Difference

R Ashwin described how Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid are different as coaches.

Gautam Gambhir just tasted his first success in Tests as Indian cricket team coach. After Rahul Dravid guided the team to 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, the onus is now on Gambhir to take the team forward. After the Sri Lanka limited overs tour, the Indian cricket team has now started a long Test season. After the ongoing Bangladesh Test series, India will play New Zealand and Australia. Ravichandran Ashwin will be a crucial cog in India’s wheel in that journey.

Before that, Ashwin described how Gambhir and Dravid are different as coaches.

“I think he (Gambhir) is very relaxed. There is nothing at all. In the morning, in the huddle. ‘Are you coming?’ Like that. Rahul Bhai is like, we will come. As soon as we come, the bottles should be in a place. He is very regimented. He is like, everything should be in order, according to him. He has a relaxed order. I feel that he captures the minds of the people. He loves the boys. He is not only relaxed,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin expressed his gratitude towards the crowd for their tremendous support throughout the 1st India vs Bangladesh Test match.

He remarked that this was one of the best Test pitches he has played on in India and urged curators to create similar pitches for Tamil Nadu’s Ranji Trophy games.

Tamim Iqbal Brings Up Virat Kohli’s Sledging ‘History’ With Bangladesh Star. Ravi Shastri Responds

Virat Kohli’s ‘sledging history’ with Mushfiqur Rahim came a point of discussion on commentary during Day 2 of the first Test match between India and Bangladesh in Chennai.

Virat Kohli’s ‘sledging history’ with Mushfiqur Rahim came a point of discussion on commentary during Day 2 of the first Test match between India and Bangladesh in Chennai on Friday. When Mushfiqur came out to bat in the first innings, former Bangladesh skipper Tamim Iqbal said on commentary that he expects something interesting considering his ‘history’ with Virat. It referred to Mushfiqur’s comments that Virat earlier sledged him on the field. Former India coach Ravi Shastri was in the commentary box with Tamim and did not miss the opportunity to take a cheeky dig.

“Mushfiqur Rahim is batting, Virat Kohli is in the slips. Watch out now. Keep an eye on them. They have quite the history,” Tamim said.

Reacting to Iqbal’s comments, Shastri asked, “What history?”

The ex-Bangladesh skipper replied – “Oh, you know, Ravi. You know what history I am talking about.”

Earlier, Mushfiqur said that Kohli tends to say things to him when he comes out to bat against India.

“Whenever I play against him, he always tries to sledge me every time I go in to bat because he is a really competitive guy and he doesn’t want to lose any cricket match. I really love that rivalry with him and the challenge that comes with facing him and India,” Rahim explained.

India took command of the first Test against Bangladesh as they extended their lead to 308 after fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah helped bundle out the visitors for 149 on Friday.

The hosts were 81-3 at stumps in their second innings on day two in Chennai. Shubman Gill, on 33, and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, on 12, were batting at close of play.

Senior India batter Virat Kohli was left in splits in the dressing room after Rohit Sharma hit Shubman Gill playfully on the jaw. The whole incident was caught on camera where Rohit, Shubman, Kohli and Gautam Gambhir were sitting in the dressing room.

Rohit extended his left arm and lightly hit Gill on the jaw. Gill was taken aback but took the tap like a sport. Kohli watching this reminded Rohit that they were on camera and that’s when everyone started laughing at the whole thing.

India captain Rohit Sharma has been candid with the rest of the Indian team, especially the juniors since taking over from Virat Kohli. Under the tenure of Rohit, youngsters have been backed by the management and the selectors. Rohit’s playful attitude and calm demeanour has helped the team thrive. Under his leadership, India have reached 3 finals, out of which they have won one – the T20 World Cup 2024.

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became the first ever cricketer in history to have scored 20-plus fifty plus scores along with 30-plus five wicket hauls in the longest format of the game. He is thus the first cricketer in the 147-year history of Test cricket to achieve the feat. Ashwin reached another great height as an all-rounder during the first Test against Bangladesh at his home stadium in Chennai on Thursday. After India was in a troublesome situation at 144/6, Ashwin started a fine counter-attack with Ravindra Jadeja, scoring 102* in 112 balls, with 10 fours and two sixes. His runs came at a strike rate of 91.07.

Ashwin, who has 36 five-wicket hauls, the third-most by a Test bowler, also has scored six hundred and 14 fifties in the longest format of the game. He is the only cricketer to have scored 20 or more fifty plus scores and have 30 five-wicket hauls in Tests.

Ashwin has four Test centuries in Tests from position number eight or below. New Zealand all-rounder Daniel Vettori has most number of centuries from number eight or below in Tests, with five tons.

The 38-year-old all-rounder has a fine record at his home stadium, MA Chidambram Stadium. In five Tests and seven innings, Ashwin has scored 331 runs at an average of 55.16, with two centuries and a fifty. Ashwin has also taken 30 wickets at an average of 23.60, with the best figures of 7/103. He has four five-wicket hauls and a ten-wicket haul at the venue.

Ashwin is among top all-rounders like Garfield Sobers (West Indies), Kapil Dev (India), Chris Cairns (New Zealand), and and Ian Botham (England) to have multiple five fors and multiple centuries at a venue in Test cricket.

India’s No. 1 Tennis Player Sumit Nagal Demanded $50,000 To Play For Country. Gives This Reason

Sumit Nagal had opted out of the recent Davis Cup tie against Sweden, citing a back strain that also forced him out of the US Open men’s doubles competition last month.

The All India Tennis Association on Thursday claimed that Sumit Nagal demanded an annual fee of USD 50,000 to play Davis Cup ties for India but the country’s top singles player defended himself, saying it is “standard practice” for athletes to be paid for their services. Nagal had opted out of the recent Davis Cup tie against Sweden, citing a back strain that also forced him out of the US Open men’s doubles competition last month.

It was India’s best chance to beat Sweden in their own backyard but competing without a singles specialist, the team received a 0-4 hammering. Packed with doubles players and debutants, the team could not even win a set in the World Group I tie.

AITA, on Tuesday, made its displeasure clear by saying that the country’s top players, including Nagal, Yuki Bhambri and Sasikumar Mukund, refused national duty.

Nagal had entered the ATP 250 Hangzhou Open and was scheduled to play on Thursday but withdrew citing the same back issue.

“You tell me why should a player be asking for money to play for the country. This is a big question. He had demanded an annual fee of USD 50,000 (approx 45 lakh) and said if he is not paid, he will not play,” Dhupar told PTI.

Largely restricted to World Group I, India play only two ties in a single season — in February and September.

“Let the country decide if it is right or not. Then, it is the decision of the government and everybody. The players are also paid by TOPS. And it’s not that they don’t get paid for playing the Davis Cup. They do get paid,” Dhupar insisted.

The AITA head was referring to the prize money that AITA receives from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for Davis Cup participation and distributes among team members.

For a World Group I tie, AITA gets around Rs 30 lakh and 70 per cent of it is distributed among the participating players while the remaining 30 per cent is kept by the national federation to manage administrative expenditure.

The prize money goes down for a lower group tie.

“No other player asked for additional money over and above their share of the ITF prize money.” A former India Davis Cupper confirmed to PTI that there have been instances in the past when the country’s leading players asked for money to play Davis Cup and those demands were accepted.

Nagal did not deny the AITA claim as he put his defense through a statement on social media.

“Regarding compensation, I want to clarify that it is standard practice in professional sports for athletes to be compensated for their participation in events, even when representing their country.

“This is not about personal gain. My discussions with AITA and the Davis Cup Captain are confidential and I would not like to indulge in any speculation about this,” he wrote in his statement.

AITA was furious that Nagal chose to skip Davis Cup last week by citing injury but “recovered miraculously” to compete in Hangzhou Open. Nagal withdrew from the ATP 250 tournament, two days after AITA came out with its statement.

Nagal said representing the country was always “a privilege and an honour that I hold in the highest regard.” “It was a difficult decision to withdraw from the Davis Cup…However, after consulting with my medical team, it became clear that competing while carrying an injury could not only jeopardize my health but also adversely impact the team’s chances.

“I believe it is better for the team and for the country to have someone at 100 per cent rather than risking further injury and potentially disrupting the match. I had informed AITA well in advance about my inability to participate,” he wrote, defending his decision to pull out.

It has been learnt that captain Rohit Rajpal had taken Nagal’s proposal to the AITA Executive Committee which, after initial reluctance, agreed to pay him but asked the captain to renegotiate the figure.

However, before an agreement could be reached, Nagal withdrew from the tie and the discussion on the matter ended without progress.

Nagal, during the tie, criticised AITA on social media platforms, saying many of them were there just to enjoy junkets. He further justified his break.

“In professional sports, injury management is a complex science. Sometimes, just a few days of rest and targeted rehabilitation can make the difference between aggravating an injury and being fit to play again.” Nagal said he was committed to the country.

“I look forward to future opportunities to wear the national colours and make my country proud, both on and off the court.” Nagal had skipped the tie against Pakistan too early this year, conveying to the team management that the contest was being played on grass court and his game was more suited to the hard surfaces.

Ohtani, who came into the game needing a stolen base and two home runs to achieve the historic feat, stole bases after his first two at-bats and crushed back-to-back home runs in the fourth and seventh innings.

After his second long ball, Ohtani came out of the dugout to wave at the delirious Dodgers fans on hand at LoanDepot Park.

Ohtani was five-for-five in the game with two doubles, two stolen bases and two home runs and seven RBIs.

The NL West-leading Dodgers led the lowly Marlins 14-3 in the seventh inning.

Italy World Cup hero Salvatore ‘Toto’ Schillaci dies, aged 59

Italian football icon Salvatore Schillaci, who was top scorer at the 1990 World Cup, has died at the age of 59.

The striker, also known as Toto, scored six goals during the tournament on his country’s soil.

Despite his brilliant form, he could not guide the Azzurri to victory – they were knocked out in the semi-finals by Argentina.

However, he became a national icon regardless, earning not only the World Cup Golden Boot award as top scorer but also the Golden Ball Award for best overall player, beating the likes of Argentina’s Diego Maradona and Germany’s Lothar Matthaus.

Schillaci died on Wednesday morning in a hospital in Palermo after being admitted following treatment for colon cancer.

He was in hospital for 11 days before he died, the hospital said in a statement.

Schillaci, who played for teams including Juventus and Inter Milan during his club career, exceeded expectations at the World Cup, having only featured once for Italy before in a game where he failed to score.

But he came on as a substitute during Italy’s opener against Austria and scored the only goal to guide the hosts to a 1-0 victory.

Another of his goals was a penalty against England to secure Italy a win in the tournament’s third-place play-off.

He made a total of 16 appearances for Italy during his career, adding one more goal to the six he scored in Italia 1990.

Schillaci retired from football in 1999.

Tributes pour in for late striker

Italy’s prime minister Giorgia Meloni led tributes for Schillaci, writing on the X social media platform: “A football icon is leaving us, a man who has entered the hearts of Italians and sports fans around the world.

“Thanks for the emotions you gave us, for having made us dream, celebrate, embrace, and wave our national flag. Bon voyage, champion,” Ms Meloni continued.

Virat Kohli vs spinners, Rohit Sharma vs…: Key battles that could decide India vs Bangladesh Test series

India are set to host a Bangladesh side who have arguably never been as confident as they currently are in Test cricket.

Virat Kohli will be looking to get a good run going as he looks to re-establish himself as the best in the world in Test cricket(PTI)

India are the overwhelming favourites in their upcoming home Test series against Bangladesh, as is normally the case in any red-ball series in the country regardless of the opponents. That said, it is also a fact that this is arguably the most well-rounded Bangladesh have ever looked ahead of a Test series, partly helped by the fact that they stunned Pakistan at the latter’s home just before this.

What is unique about Bangladesh which most top teams don’t bring to the table when playing Test matches in India, is that they have multiple experienced spinners in their lineup. Additionally, both their top spinners – Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, are also proven all-rounders, as is the case for India with regards to Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Bangladesh also have batters who are far more adept at facing spin bowling than the average batter from countries like England or Australia.

All of this makes the upcoming two-match Test series an interesting prospect to look forward to. Here we take a look at some battles that could be key in the matches set to be played in Chennai and Kanpur

Mushfiqur Rahim against R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja
Mushfiqur Rahim is one of few touring batters who have a good record in India. He may have played only three Tests in the country but the Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter has scored 331 runs at an average of 55.16 with one century and two half-centuries. Bangladesh’s fate in this series depends a lot on how they can avoid collapsing to Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja and Mushfiqur will play a key role there. He was seen practicing different kinds of sweeps in Chennai ahead of the first Test against the offspin and left-arm spin in the nets.

Virat Kohli vs Bangladesh spinners
Kohli has succesfully re-established himself as the most consistent batter in the world in ODIs and T20Is after his stunning three-year dip in form between 2019 and 2021. While he has also scored a couple of Test centuries in the last couple of years, there have been a lot of conversations about him falling far behind Joe Root in the pecking order for best contemporary Test batters. With India set to play 10 Test matches in the next six months, it is a good chance for Kohli to get a good run going in the format once again. Spin bowling has been a bit of a bane for him though and he will especially be targetted by the experienced duo of Shakib and Miraz. How Kohli navigates the pair might go a long way in how good a Test season he has overall.

Indian openers vs Nahid Rana
If India dish out pace-friendly wickets, as they did the last time Bangladesh toured the country, they would be wary of the threat that Nahid Rana would pose. The tearaway, along with Hasan Mahmud, was the heart and soul of Bangladesh’s incredible turnaround in their second Test against Pakistan. Captain Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal are expected to open for India and they would be up against it with Rana known to regularly bowl around 145kph to 150kph.

American gymnast Jordan Chiles takes bid to have Olympic bronze restored to the Swiss Supreme Court

American gymnast Jordan Chiles is asking Switzerland’s Supreme Court to overturn a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport that stripped Chiles of a bronze medal in floor exercise at the 2024 Olympics.

Chiles, with the support of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee and USA Gymnastics, filed the appeal on Monday, a little over a month after CAS voided an on-floor appeal by Chiles’ coach Cecile Landi during the event finals on Aug. 5 that vaulted Chiles from fifth to third.

CAS, following a hearing requested by Romanian officials, ruled Landi’s appeal came 4 seconds beyond the 1-minute time limit for scoring inquiries and recommended the initial finishing order be restored. The International Gymnastics Federation complied and the International Olympic Committee ended up awarding bronze to Romanian Ana Barbosu on Aug. 16.

Chiles’ appeal maintains that the CAS hearing violated her “right to be heard” by refusing to allow video evidence that Chiles and USA Gymnastics believe showed Landi appealed within the 1-minute time allotment. Chiles’ appeal also argues that Hamid G. Gharavi, president of the CAS panel, has a conflict of interest due to past legal ties to Romania.

USA Gymnastics wrote in a statement Monday night that it made a “collective, strategic decision to have Jordan lead the initial filing. USAG is closely coordinating with Jordan and her legal team and will make supportive filings with the court in the continued pursuit of justice for Jordan.”

The appeal is the next step in what could be a months- or years-long legal battle over the gymnastics scores.

Chiles was last among the eight women to compete during the floor exercise finals initially given a score of 13.666 that placed her fifth, right behind Barbosu and fellow Romanian Sabrina Maneca-Voinea. Landi called for an inquiry on Chiles’ score.

Asian Champions Trophy 2024 Highlights, India vs Korea hockey: Harmanpreet, Uttam, Jarmanpreet score as India reach final, Pakistan lose against China

Asian Champions Trophy 2024 Highlights: Harmanpreet Singh-led India stayed on course to defend their title from Chennai in 2023.

Asian Champions Trophy 2024 Live updates: India will take on Korea in the semi-final

IND vs KOR hockey match Asian Champions Trophy 2024 Highlights: Unbeaten India continued their fine run at the 2024 Asian Champions Hockey Tournament as they beat Korea 4-1 to enter the final in quest for consecutive titles. In the first semifinal, Pakistan went down in a shootout against hosts China after missing all their attempts. India will take on hosts China in the final on Tuesday.

Harmanpreet Singh (x2), Uttam Singh and Jarmanpreet Singh were the goalscorers for India while Yang Jihan got a consolatory goal for Korea as India prevailed 4-1 with a dominant performance to return to the final in Moqi, after winning the event in Chennai last year.

Back-to-back Olympic bronze medallists India are in red-hot form as they came into the semis with five wins. Harmanpreet Singh-led India had defeated China 3-0, trounced Japan 5-1 and Malaysia 8-1, then edged past Korea 3-1 and arch-rivals Pakistan 2-1 with the last two matches being tougher tests. India have been led by the in-form drag flick star Harmanpreet Singh who stepped up with two goals each in the last two matches and repeated the feat in the semifinal. Uttam opened the scoring in the first quarter while Jarmanpreet scored India’s third.

Asian Champions Trophy 2024, India vs Korea semifinal: IND 4-1 KOR, India reach the final

Raj Kumar Pal started playing hockey at the Karampur village stadium in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, after seeing his two elder brothers play the sport. As he started rising through the ranks, Raj Kumar turned out to be a brotherly figure to Uttam Singh at that very stadium. It made for a lovely moment on Monday at Moqi Hockey Training Base in Hulunbuir on Monday, as the two were part of India’s well-worked opening goal in the semifinal of the men’s Asian Champions Trophy.

As Uttam tapped in to complete a flowing passing move, it was Raj Kumar who was the first to rush to the former Under-21 captain and embrace him. India eventually beat Korea 4-1 to keep their title defence on track and set up a title clash against China, who had earlier stunned Pakistan in the first semifinal. Uttam has spoken in the past about the role Raj Kumar played in his career, akin to an elder brother guiding him through the rocky early stages of a nascent career, taking time out to train the young forward with drills like dodging, tackling, and passing to make him a more rounded athlete. The two of them have had many conversations about their careers, and finally, here they were playing for the senior national team and celebrating a goal together.

With a second place finish in Brussels Diamond League, Neeraj Chopra brought end to his 2024 season. Neeraj missed out on the top spot by a margin of 1 centimeter, with the result summing up the sort of campaign he has had this year. On Sunday, Neeraj shared a post on social media, revealing how participated in the Brussels Diamond League final after incurring a fracture on his hand. Though it wasn’t the most fulfilling of campaigns, Neeraj wrote that he was thankful for the learnings he had and the support he got. As Neeraj starts preparation for the new season, shooter Manu Bhaker shared a brilliant post for the javelin thrower.

Manu, who participated with Neeraj in the Paris Olympics, congratulated the Tokyo Games gold medal winner for the season he had this year and also wished him a speedy recovery from the injuries he has incurred.

“Congratulations @Neeraj_chopra1 on a fantastic season in 2024. Wishing you a speedy recovery and more success in the coming years,” she wrote, reacting to Neeraj’s post.

In his post, Neeraj had written: “As the 2024 season ends, I look back on everything I’ve learned through the year – about improvement, setbacks, mentality, and more.

On Monday, I injured myself in practice and x-rays showed that I had fractured the fourth metacarpal in my left hand. It was another painful challenge for me. But with the help of my team, I was able to participate in Brussels.

PCB Fears Embarrassment With Champions Trophy Getting Closer. Here’s The Reason

Champions Trophy 2025 is set to take place in February-March.

Pakistan Cricket Board.© X (formerly Twitter)

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear that the nation will be host the upcoming Test series against England, refuting the media reports that claimed it could be moved out. The international cricket department’s failure to finalise the itinerary has left the PCB chief frustrated. Pakistan are scheduled to face England in three Tests from October 7 with Multan, Karachi, and Rawalpindi being outlined as the venues. However, the construction work going on at these venues ahead of next year’s ICC Champions Trophy has created some doubts about the availability of the stadiums there. Champions Trophy 2025 is set to take place in February-March.

“With less than a month remaining for the first Test, the international department is yet to even decide where the first match would be held,” an insider confided to PTI.

He said although Naqvi had shot down a proposal to move the Test series to UAE or South Africa, the department concerned is yet to formally announce the tour itinerary.

“The Chairman has made it clear that relocating the series would damage the image of the PCB, and Rawalpindi and Multan should be used as the venues for the three-match series,” he said.

The board insider said even the English cricket board and the Barmy Army members were anxious to know whether the first Test will be played at Multan or Rawalpindi.

“The chairman is not happy because the more the announcement of venues and itinerary is delayed the more it affects the board’s revenue generation opportunities from the three matches,” the insider said.

In this context, the insider said the broadcasters have been struggling to sell the telecast rights of the series abroad.

“Even the broadcasters who have bought the rights to sell the series internationally are worried as they are yet to find a buyer to show the matches in the UK,” he added.

“In this background, the more the announcement is delayed the more it is hitting the PCB’s chances of earning good revenues from the England series.”

Enzo Fernandez: Chelsea footballer disqualified from driving

Chelsea footballer Enzo Fernandez has been disqualified from driving following two driving offences.

He was sentenced at Llanelli Magistrates court in Carmarthenshire on Wednesday after he was found guilty of failing to identify the driver of a Porsche Cayenne on 27 December last year.

The 23-year-old was also sentenced for a further offence of failing to identify the driver of a vehicle on 24 January.

A driver of the car was allegedly caught speeding on Carmarthen Road, Swansea, and, in a separate incident, running a red light on Church Street, Llanelli.

It was not proven that Fernandez was the driver of the vehicle on either occasion.

The midfielder has been at Chelsea since last year after signing from Benfica for a then British-record £106.8m.

He played for Argentina in their World Cup-winning campaign in 2022 and also won the 2024 Copa America with his national side.

Over the summer, the Argentinian apologised after he was seen chanting a racially offensive song with his Argentina teammates in a live broadcast on Instagram.

Fernandez was not in court for his sentencing and his case was heard in his absence.

He was fined £1,000 per offence and ordered to pay £110 in costs to Dyfed-Powys Police and South Wales Police respectively.

He must also pay a surcharge of £800 for the offences, bringing the total to £3,020.

Sourav Ganguly makes ‘all-time great’ prediction for Rishabh Pant, reveals his expectations: ‘Needs to get better in…’

Before Rishabh Pant makes his comeback to Test cricket against Bangladesh, former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly called him an “all-time great” of Indian cricket

Before Rishabh Pant makes his comeback to Test cricket against Bangladesh, former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly called him an “all-time great” of Indian cricket

Rishabh Pant returning to red-ball cricket was among the many factors in the ongoing Duleep Trophy and he is now set to make a comeback in Test cricket when India host Bangladesh later this month. Pant, who hasn’t played a Test match since suffering a car crash in December 2022, has been named in the squad for the first match of the series which starts on September 19.

Sourav Ganguly, widely rated among the greatest India captains ever and former BCCI president, said that he is not surprised by Pant returning to the Test fold as soon as he was available. “I consider Rishabh Pant one of India’s best Test batsmen. I’m not surprised that he’s back in the side, and he will continue to play for India in Tests,” Ganguly said at a promotional event here.

Before the car crash in December 2022 that temporarily froze his career for over a year, Pant had come to be recognised as one of the most destructive Test batters in the world. He has scored 2271 in 33 Test matches with five centuries and 11 half-centuries at an average of 43.67. Pant was also known for his aggression and has a career strike rate of 73.63. He has two centuries in England and a century each in Australia and South Africa.

‘I’m sure he will become one of the best’
Ganguly also works closely with Pant in the IPL side Delhi Capitals. Pant is captain of the team while Ganguly is Director of Cricket and mentor. He pointed out that Pant needs to work on his effectiveness in limited overs cricket.

Jannik Sinner produced a brutal display of baseline power as he became the first Italian man to win the U.S. Open with a 6-3 6-4 7-5 win over American Taylor Fritz in the final on Sunday.
Sinner held aloft his arms in celebration after breaking Fritz to clinch the title and cheers rang around Arthur Ashe Stadium, even though home fans had hoped to see Fritz end a 21-year U.S. men’s Grand Slam drought.
Sinner was under a cloud of controversy at the start of the tournament after revelations that he tested positive twice for an anabolic agent in March but avoided a ban. An independent tribunal accepted his claim that the positive tests were the result of an unintentional contamination.
The top seed blocked out the furore in New York and with the win claimed his second Grand Slam title after winning the Australian Open earlier this year.

Paris Paralympics 2024: Sheetal Devi And Rakesh Kumar Make Comeback To Win Bronze

The Indian duo went on to claim the bronze medal with a 156-155 win over Italy’s Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonacina.

The Indian duo of Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar staged a remarkable comeback after the heartbreak in the semifinals to claim the bronze medal with a 156-155 win over Italy’s Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonacina in mixed team compound archery competition at Paralympics here on Monday.

It is only the second time that India has won a medal in Paralympics in archery. Harvinder Singh bagged an individual bronze at the Tokyo edition of the Games three years ago.

Sheetal also became the first Indian woman to win an archery medal at the quadrennial showpiece as coach Kuldeep Vedhwan rejoiced at the stands. Sheetal, 17, was born in 2007 with phocomelia, a rare congenital disorder leading to underdeveloped limbs. The condition resulted in her arms not fully forming.

The 39-year-old Rakesh suffered a spinal cord injury and after recovering in 2009 he realised he would be wheelchair-bound for life, which plunged him into depression and even forced him to contemplate taking his own life.

India won after the 17-year-old Sheetal’s shot in the final end was upgraded from 9 to 10 following a revision. Something similar had happened in the semifinal too, against Iran earlier in the evening, but the Indians were at the receiving end on that occasion.

Sumit Antil breaks Paralympic record to win javelin gold, defends title in Paris

Sumit Antil wins India a third gold medal at the Paris Paralympics.

Sumit Antil (HT_PRINT)

India’s Sumit Antil defended his Paralympic javelin gold medal, creating a new Games record to clinch the top podium in Paris on Monday. Antil recorded a highest throw of 70.59m in his second attempt, which remained the highest throughout the competition.

Antil delivered an impressive performance in the final, launching a throw of 69.11m on his first attempt and then surpassing it with a new Paralympic record in the F64 category by breaking the 70m barrier. He continued his strong form with a third throw of 66.66m.

Despite a foul on his fourth attempt, Antil wrapped up the event with solid throws of 69.04m and 66.57m in his fifth and sixth attempts, respectively. No other competitor managed to cross the 70m mark.

Sri Lanka’s Dulan Kodithuwakku secured the silver medal with a top throw of 67.03m, while Michal Burian claimed bronze with a best of 64.89m.

The 26-year-old world record holder from Sonipat, Haryana, surpassed his previous Paralympic record of 68.55m, which he set while winning gold in Tokyo three years ago.

Australian teen Gout Gout, touted as ‘next Usain Bolt’, sets personal best at World Championships

Australian teenager Gout Gout, who has been touted as the next Usain Bolt because of his sensational sprints, has claimed the silver medal at the U20 World Championships.

The 16-year-old, who was born in Brisbane after his parents migrated from South Sudan, set a new personal best of 20.60 seconds during the 200m final in Lima, Peru.

He came second only to 18-year-old South African Bayanda Walaza (20.54). British sprinter Jake Odey-Jordan came third, claiming the bronze medal with a time of 20.81 seconds.

Bolt, who was just shy of 16 at the time, ran 20.61 seconds when he took part in the event in 2002. It means Gout ran 0.01 seconds faster than Bolt’s 2002 time.

“I’m feeling really relieved after a long-two weeks of being in Lima,” Gout was quoted as saying post-race by news.com.au.

“I’ve been training, grinding and just waiting patiently for this race to happen.

“Now that it’s done, I’m really glad and ready to get in my bed and rest up for the (4x100m) relay for tomorrow.”

Earlier this year, Athletics Australia president Jane Flemming likened Gout to Jamaican legend Bolt. According to ABC, the teenager described the comparison as “pretty cool”.

Bolt, who has now retired, won eight Olympic gold medals and is world-record holder in the 100m and 200m sprints.

Rubina’s bronze was India’s fourth medal from the shooting range and fifth overall. The 25-year-old from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh aggregated 211.1 to finish third in the eight-woman final behind Iran’s Sareh Javanmardi (236.8) and Turkey’s Aysel Ozgan (231.1).

Avani Lekhara scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win successive Paralympic gold medal after her record-shattering performance in the women’s 10m air rifle SH1 shooting competition at the Paris Paralympics 2024 on Friday. The 22-year-old, who ended with the score of 249.7 in the final, broke her own Paralympic record of 249.6 to clinch the historic gold medal. However, Avani’s journey to Paris was not a simple one as she had to fight through a number of health issues including a gall bladder surgery that sidelined her for some time and even hampered his preparation.

Avani lost quite a bit of weight following the gall bladder surgery but she continued to work hard and it was her determination that allowed her to resume practice during the national camp

“Gallbladder stones had been troubling her since 2023. It also affected her training as the recurring pain around the stomach and waist would mean that she could not spend the usual hours at the shooting range. Avani wanted to give her best at the Paris Paralympics. So we decided to get the gall bladder removed in March this year. It took her some time to recover and it was a tough phase. But at the end of the tough year, she has achieved a historic feat,” Praveen told The Indian Express.

Avani’s Chandra Shekar also opened up about the challenges that Avani faced after her surgery and how she made a comeback to shooting through grit and determination.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir, BCCI president Roger Binny, and all-rounder Hardik Pandya led the long list of joyous members of the cricketing fraternity in lauding Jay Shah, who was on Tuesday elected unopposed as the ICC Chairman. BCCI secretary Shah was elected unopposed as the next ICC head, making him the youngest ever to reach the pinnacle of global cricket administration at the age of 35.

“Congratulations to BCCI Honorary Secretary Mr. Jay Shah for being elected unopposed as the next Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council,” the BCCI posted in its official ‘X’, formerly twitter, handle.

Gambhir, who has taken over as head coach from Rahul Dravid, said: “Many congrats @JayShah bhai! I know world cricket will grow tremendously under your exceptional leadership!”

Pandya, who played a pivotal role in India’s recent T20 World Cup triumph wrote: “Congratulations @Jay Shah bhai on being elected as the youngest chairman of ICC.

“Look forward to seeing you take cricket to even greater heights. Your vision and drive will help ICC, just like it did with BCCI.”

Binny, the 1983 World Cup winner, rated Shah as a “strong pillar” of BCCI. “I take this opportunity to congratulate Mr. Jay Shah on his appointment as the independent chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC). He has been a strong pillar as the BCCI Honorary Secretary and the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

“He has been a cornerstone in ideating and implementing some of the pathbreaking initiatives in cricket. As he takes over as the ICC Chairman, I am sure his foresight and leadership will further enhance the reputation and well-being of our beloved game,” he said.

Former Indian captain and head coach Anil Kumble said: “Jay Shah’s election as ICC Chair marks a new chapter in global cricket. Congratulations and best wishes for the journey ahead!” Ravi Shastri, another former Indian captain and head coach, said: “Congratulations to @JayShah on being elected unopposed as ICC Chairman—the youngest ever at just 35! His experience running @BCCI will undoubtedly serve him well.

“The cricket community can be rest assured that Jay will work tirelessly to help World Cricket and @ICC to realize their full potential and take them to another level.”

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla added: “I would like to wish Mr. Jay Shah all the very best in his new role at the ICC. He has been a visionary and has taken great pride in making sure that the game of cricket reaches newer heights and reaches a wider audience. His forthright approach and astute leadership means the game of cricket will continue to prosper across the globe.”

Veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara wrote in his ‘X’ handle: “Heartiest congratulations to @JayShah on being elected as the ICC Chair. Under your visionary leadership, cricket is set to touch new heights globally.” Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh too hailed Shah’s appointment.

“Congratulations to Secretary @BCCI Shri @Jai Shah Ji on your election, unopposed, as Chairman @ICC. Confident that the ICC will benefit from your experience of handling Indian cricket. Your leadership will guide world cricket to a new height. My best wishes.”

Pakistan legend drops Jasprit Bumrah reference in lamenting fast bowling decline: ‘Pace used to be our strength…’

Pakistan have been roundly criticised for their tactics in their first-ever Test defeat to Bangladesh at home.

Pakistan’s fast bowlers seemed to struggle to generate pace at various points of the first Test

The brickbats continue to come for Pakistan after their stunning 10-wicket loss to Bangladesh in the first Test in Rawalpindi. Apart from this being the first time ever that Bangladesh managed to beat Pakistan away from home in a Test match, this was also the first time they ever won any Test by 10 wickets.

Pakistan’s team management was criticised for fielding four pacers and no spinners on a dry pitch. Former wicketkeeper Rashid Latif has now said that even the fast bowlers didn’t seem to be able to bowl at a good pace for long periods of time. “The world knows that pace used to be our strength but our top fast bowlers no longer bowl at breakneck pace. It was the root cause of the defeat yesterday (at Rawalpindi on Sunday). Their speeds have come down drastically. If they are carrying injuries, they should reveal that. Shaheen (Afridi), Naseem (Shah), and Khurram (Shahzad) started off with pace of 145. They all have come down to 130,” Latif wrote on Cricbuzz.

Latif took examples of fast bowlers from other countries like Jofra Archer of England and Jasprit Bumrah who had to endure long periods on the sidelines due to injuries and still did not lose their pace. “Our trainers and physios are to blame. If you look at a Jofra Archer, he comes back after two years of hiatus but does not lose a yard in his pace. Same with Jasprit Bumrah — he comes back from an operation and bowls with the same velocity,” he said.

“Pat Cummins… he was out of cricket for a long time due to injury. When he came back, he did not show any signs of slowing down. Why are our bowlers slowing down? Obviously, our support staff is not doing a proper job. A bowler of 144 kmph speed has come down to 128 kmph.”

‘Our record was much better in the UAE’
Pakistan’s return to home doesn’t seem to have helped them too much. This was their fifth defeat in their last nine Test matches played at home. “Our record was much better in the UAE. Yasir Shah was there. We used to beat all the top teams, England, Australia, New Zealand. Since we have come back home, we have not won much,” said Latif.

“Going To Leave The Sport Poorer”: Sunil Gavaskar On Shikhar Dhawan’s Retirement

After Shikhar Dhawan recently called time on his playing career across all formats, legendary India opener Sunil Gavaskar feels the left-handed opener’s retirement leaves cricket poorer’.

File photo of Shikhar Dhawan© X (Twitter)

After Shikhar Dhawan recently called time on his playing career across all formats, legendary India opener Sunil Gavaskar feels the left-handed opener’s retirement leaves cricket ‘poorer’. He added that injuries may have influenced Dhawan’s decision to retire from the game. In all, Dhawan scored 6,793 runs in 167 ODIs at an average of 44.11 and a strike rate of 91.35, including 17 centuries. In 34 Tests, he amassed 2,315 runs at an average of 40.61, while hitting seven centuries, including 189 on debut against Australia at Mohali. In 68 T20Is, he scored 1,759 runs at a strike rate of 126.36.

“Shikhar Dhawan’s retirement from all forms of the game is going to leave the sport poorer than before. The ever-smiling, ever-positive Shikhar, also fondly called ‘Gabbar’, was a player of enormous talent. But as befalls opening batters, a lean series or tournament can mean the selectors wielding the axe.”

“In later years, injuries were part of Shikhar’s career, which seldom allowed him to fully display his skill and probably helped him make the decision to quit the game while he was still enjoying being part of the circuit,” wrote Gavaskar in his column for Sportstar.

Dhawan was the leading run-getter in India’s title-winning run at the 2013 Champions Trophy in England and went on to be the side’s leading run-getter in 2014 Asia Cup, 2015 ODI World Cup 2015, 2017 Champions Trophy and 2018 Asia Cup.

He also captained India whenever the seniors weren’t present in the team and was Player of the Tournament in the 2004 U19 World Cup. He represented Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he’s the second-highest run-getter after Virat Kohli.

Gavaskar also feels that with retired cricketers having greater avenues to give back to the game, Dhawan can dabble into anything which will bring joy to cricket fans. On Monday, it was announced that Dhawan, 38, joined the Legends Cricket League, with its next edition to happen in September.

Shows Lack Of…: Shahid Afridi Breaks Silence After Pakistan Hit New Low, Lose To Bangladesh By 10 Wickets

Shahid Afridi broke his silence following Pakistan’s shocking defeat against Bangladesh and shared a post on X. The Shan Masood-led side suffered a 10-wicket defeat in Rawalpindi. It was Bangladesh’s first-ever win over Pakistan in Test cricket.

Pakistan cricket hit a new low in Test cricket as they suffered a 10-wicket defeat at the hands of Bangladesh in Rawalpindi. Pakistan had never lost a Test match against Bangladesh in history. Bangladesh registered a comprehensive win over Pakistan and handed them a 10-wicket defeat. Many former Pakistan players have slammed the team for poor performance.

Shahid Afridi also broke his silence and shared a post on X. “A 10-wicket defeat raises serious questions about the decision to prepare this type of pitch, select four fast bowlers and leave out a specialist spinner. This to me clearly shows a lack of awareness about home conditions. That said, you cannot take the credit away from Bangladesh for the brand of cricket they played throughout the Test,” he wrote on X.

Pakistan made a shocking call and decided to play with four pacers. They didn’t include any spinner in the playing XI. Pakistan struggled against Bangladesh spinners and the home team’s decision to play without a spinner was one of the reasons behind their defeat.

The Indian archer without arms shooting for a gold

Abhilasha Chaudhary
Sheetal Devi, 17, is determined to win a gold for India at the Paralympics

Archer Sheetal Devi picks up her bow, loads an arrow and carefully aims at her target, about 50m (164ft) away, with a look of immense focus on her face.

So does her opponent, who is playing a practice game with her at a training academy in India.

The difference is that Devi is seated on a chair. She raises the bow with her right leg, pulls back the string using her right shoulder and releases the arrow using the strength of her jaw.

What never changes throughout this process is Devi’s calm demeanour.

The 17-year-old from Jammu district was born with phocomelia, a rare congenital disorder, making her the world’s first – and only active – female archer to compete without arms.

The Asian Para Games gold medallist is now gearing up for the Paralympics, which begin on 28 August in Paris.

“I am inspired to win the gold,” Devi said. “Whenever I see the medals I have won [until now], I feel inspired to win more. I have only just started.”

Around 4,400 athletes from across the world will take part in 22 sports at the Paralympics this year.

Archery has been a part of the Games since the inaugural edition in 1960. While countries such as Great Britain, USA and South Korea have dominated the medal count, India has accounted for a solitary bronze medal across 17 editions.

Para-archers are grouped into categories depending on the severity of their impairment.

The distances they have to shoot also differ based on the classification system, which then determines whether an archer can use assistive devices such as wheelchairs and release aids.

Archers competing in the W1 category are wheelchair users with impairment in at least three out of the four limbs with either a clear loss of muscle strength, coordination or range of movement.

Those competing in the open category have an impairment in either the top or bottom half or one side of their bodies and use a wheelchair, or have a balance impairment and shoot standing or resting on a stool. Competitors use either recurve or compound bows, depending on the event.

Devi is currently ranked first in the world in the compound open women’s category.

In 2023, she won a silver at the Para-Archery World Championship, which helped her qualify for the Paris Games.

At Paris, she will face tough competition from opponents including world number three Jane Karla Gogel and the reigning World Championship winner Oznur Cure.

Babe Ruth’s ‘called shot’ jersey sells for record amount at auction

It was for the shirt Ruth wore during one of the most famous moments in sporting history – his home run in the 1932 World Series for the Yankees.

The jersey Babe Ruth wore when he “called the shot” in the 1932 World Series before hitting a home run has sold at an auction for over $24.1m (£18.1m) – making it the most expensive sports memorabilia ever.

The shirt, which sold at Heritage Auctions, tops the previous record held by fellow Yankee Mickey Mantle’s 1952 rookie card, which the Dallas-based auction house sold for $12.6m (£9.5m) in 2022.

A bidding war lasted for over six hours and concluded at 4.30am local time, Heritage Auctions said, adding the buyer wished to remain anonymous.

It was for the shirt Ruth wore during one of the most famous moments in sporting history, which came as his Yankees and the Chicago Cubs faced off in Game 3 of the World Series at Chicago’s Wrigley Field.

The sporting great appeared to call his shot before hitting a home run, helping the Yankees on their way to a World Series win.

It might be one of the most iconic moments in history, but it’s one steeped in mystery, even nearly a hundred years later.

There’s never been a consensus over whether Ruth really called the shot. Some say footage shows he is pointing to the pitcher, others at centre field and some towards the club bench.

“It is the most dramatic moment in World Series history, and it may be the most dramatic moment ever in all of baseball,” said Michael Gibbons, director emeritus and historian at the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum in Baltimore.

He added Ruth, who had a history of making predictions, clearly “said something’s going to happen on the next pitch and he made it happen.” And, he said, Ruth himself said he called the shot before his death in 1948.

Paralympics: Paris preparing for ‘transformational’ power of disability sports

More than 4,000 athletes will compete across 22 sports in the French capital over the next two weeks, as the city’s iconic sites are showcased again in the second part of the Paris 2024 summer.

For those missing the Olympics and those who missed out attending in Paris, the plea from the Paralympics leadership is: “The party is not over.”

The last two weeks have been spent recovering and reconfiguring venues in the French capital as the Paralympics looks to seize the biggest platform for the games since London 2012.

Like at the Olympics, the opening ceremony on Wednesday night will also be away from the traditional confines of the stadium but with its own feel as it is centred around different landmarks in Paris.

Thousands of athletes will parade on the Champs-Elysees before the focal point of the ceremony at Place de la Concorde.

International Paralympic Committee president Andrew Parsons told Sky News: “We know that many Parisians leave Paris during the summer and, especially because of the Olympics they left, and they are probably watching on TV and maybe regretting that they have left because they think, ‘oh, we missed the party’.

“But the party is not over. We have the Paralympics and they will be able to experience that same feeling.”

More than 4,000 athletes will compete across 22 sports until 8 September, with blind football taking place beneath the Eiffel Tower as the city’s iconic sites are showcased again in the second part of the Paris 2024 summer.

“No one goes and experiences a Paralympic event and goes back home feeling the same about humankind, about themselves,” Mr Parsons said.

“It is really transformational – positive and exciting sport. So we believe that we will have full stadia.”

There is a push to sell tickets, especially after the Rio Paralympics couldn’t match the record crowds seen in London – while still registering the second-highest games attendance – and fans were shut out by the pandemic in Tokyo in 2021.

The benchmark is still the 2.7 million tickets sold at the 2012 Games.

“London was the number one,” Mr Parsons said.

“I think London was the games that changed and put the Paralympics in a new perspective. But from then on we have been building that, in Rio and Tokyo and the winter editions as well.

“So Paris will be a new chapter of that… another step in the path of growing the Paralympic Games.”

Britain has never topped the Paralympics medals count but has finished second at every summer games this century, apart from dipping to third at London 2012 behind China and Russia.

Rohtak: Olympic wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified from the 50-kg final match in the recent Paris games, was honoured with a gold medal by the Sarvkhap Panchayat here on Sunday.

“My fight has not ended, it has rather just begun. The fight for our daughters’ honour has just started. We said the same thing during our sit-in,” Phogat said, addressing an event organised to felicitate her.

She was part of the agitation by wrestlers, mostly from Haryana, against the then Wrestling Federation of India chief and BJP leader Brijbhushan Sharan Singh over allegations of sexual harassment last year.

“When I could not play in Paris, I thought I was very unfortunate but after returning to India and experiencing all the love and support here, I feel that I am very fortunate,” she said.

Tennis World No. 1 Jannik Sinner Breaks Silence On Avoiding Ban Despite Failing Dope Tests

Tennis world number one Jannik Sinner said Friday he was relieved to escape a doping ban after twice testing positive for a banned substance.

File photo of Jannik Sinner© AFP

Tennis world number one Jannik Sinner said Friday he was relieved to escape a doping ban after twice testing positive for a banned substance, even though “in my mind I know that I haven’t done anything wrong.” The 23-year-old Italian spoke publicly for the first time since the International Tennis Integrity Agency cleared him this week of wrongdoing, accepting his explanation that the drug entered his system when his physiotherapist used a spray containing it to treat a cut, then provided massage and sports therapy to the player.

Sinner tested positive for low levels of the banned anabolic agent clostebol in March — once during the Indian Wells Masters and again in an out-of-competition test eight days later.

Sinner was stripped of his results, prize money and 400 ranking points he accumulated at Indian Wells, but the ITIA confirmed this week that an independent tribunal found that he “bears no fault or negligence” for the violations.

Sinner said the months-long process was a nerve-wracking experience, and he rejected suggestions he had received any special treatment because of his lofty ranking.

“No, it’s every player who gets tested positive has to go through the same process,” Sinner said at a news conference at the US Open which starts Monday.

“There is no shortcut, there is no different treatment, they are all the same process.”

He said he was able to keep playing, without a lengthy provisional suspension, because his team immediately pinpointed the fact that physio Giacomo Naldi had used a spray containing the drug to treat a cut finger.

He’d been given the spray by Sinner’s trainer Umberto Ferrara.

Sinner confirmed that he had now cut ties with both men, citing a loss of confidence in them.

“I want to start with that they have been a huge part for my career,” he said. “We worked together for two years. We made an incredible job, bringing a lot of success and then having a great team behind me.

“Now, because of these mistakes, I’m not feeling that confident to continue with them.

“The only thing I just need right now, just some clean air. You know, I was struggling a lot in the last months. Now I was waiting for the result, and now I just need some clean air.”

Sinner said he could understand the frustration of players who had to go through lengthy provisional suspensions before their doping cases were resolved.

“But maybe (the reason) they got suspended is they didn’t know exactly where it comes from, also what substance, but the main reason is where it comes from and how it entered in his own system.”

He said Ferrara “knew it straightaway that it was his spray”.

“And knowing because of that was the spray and knowing also how it all ended up into my system, we went straight back to them, and we explained everything how it happened, and that was the reason why I had the chance to keep playing.”

He was suspended for several days, Sinner said, during which he could not practice.

Shikhar Dhawan Announces Retirement From International & Domestic Cricket; Thanks BCCI, DDCA & Fans (Watch)

Shikhar Dhawan shared the news with his fans through an emotional video message posted on his social media accounts. In the video, he expressed his deep gratitude for the love and support he received throughout his career.

Former India cricketer Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from domestic and international cricket on Saturday, August 24. Dhawan, who last represented India in the ODI series against Bangladesh in December 2022, has officially ended his career at the age of 38. His place in the team was eventually taken by the rising star Shubman Gill.

Dhawan Announces Retirement Through Video Post

Dhawan shared the news with his fans through an emotional video message posted on his social media accounts. In the video, he expressed his deep gratitude for the love and support he received throughout his career. He captioned the post on X, “As I close this chapter of my cricketing journey, I carry with me countless memories and gratitude. Thank you for the love and support! Jai Hind!”

During his illustrious career, Dhawan played 34 Tests, 167 ODIs and 68 T20Is for India. He thanked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) and his fans for their unwavering support in his retirement message. Despite his efforts to regain his spot on the national team after 2022, the emergence of younger talent made it difficult for him to make a comeback.

Shikhar Dhawan’s Illustrious Career

Dhawan’s journey in cricket began with years of dedication and hard work in domestic cricket. He made his ODI debut for India in 2010 against Australia, but his first match ended in disappointment as he was dismissed for a duck. Although he briefly returned to white-ball cricket in 2011, it was his performance in red-ball cricket that truly set him apart.

Dinesh Karthik sets the internet on fire with ‘skipper’ post as Virat Kohli completes 16 years in international cricket

Virat Kohli had made his international debut on August 18, 2008

Dinesh Karthik was a T20 World Cup winner by the time Virat Kohli made his international debut.

It has been 16 years since Virat Kohli made his debut in international cricket and in this time, he has established himself as one of the all-time greats of the sport. Such has been his achievements that players who were senior to him in the early years of his career have paid tribute to him whenever he broke a major batting record in recent years.

An example of this could be seen with former wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik’s post for Kohli on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of his international debut. Karthik addresses Kohli as “skipper” in the post. “Happy to have played with you Skipper. 16 years and the fire still burns bright,” said Karthik in his post on X.

Karthik himself had made his debut in September 2004 and was a T20 World Cup winner by the time Kohli made his international debut. He, however, played a number of matches under Kohli’s captaincy at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Karthik also played seven T20Is, 25 ODIs and two Test matches under Kohli’s captaincy for India.

Kohli’s international debut came in an ODI against Sri Lanka on August 18, 2008 in Dambulla. He then made his T20I debut on June 12, 2010 against Zimbabwe in Harare and his first Test match was against the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica in June 20.

Virat Kohli’s absence from the Duleep Trophy

Kohli had won the 2011 World Cup but he ended up missing out on big titles throughout his time as India captain between 2014 and 2021. His drought of big titles only ended this year when India dramatically won the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. He played three ODIs against Sri Lanka since then and it was speculated that he would make a surprise appearance in the Duleep Trophy.

However, his and Rohit’s absence from the team rosters for the domestic tournament raised a few eyebrows. Batting great Sunil Gavaskar raised concern over Rohit and Kohli’s absence from the Duleep Trophy squads by pointing out that they will play in the Bangladesh Test series without much match practice.

“The selectors have not picked the skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the Duleep Trophy so they will most likely go into the Bangladesh Test series without much match practice,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for the Mid-Day.

Gavaskar asserted that when a player hit their mid-thirties, it becomes difficult for them to maintain high standards as their muscle memory starts getting weak and the only way to counter that is playing regular cricket.

Former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly is expected to join the protesters along with his wife in Kolkata today.

Sourav Ganguly, former Indian cricket captain, will reportedly join the protesting junior resident doctors to express support and demand justice for the deceased postgraduate trainee doctor, who was allegedly raped and murdered inside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital medical college in Kolkata.

The former BCCI president is expected to join the protesters along with his wife, Dona Ganguly, in Kolkata.

Sourav Ganguly’s participation in the protest will come after he changed his profile picture on social media platform X to black to express solidarity with the victim. Thousands of users across social media have done the same as a sign of sorrow over the crime.

The former Indian cricket team captain was under fire for describing the brutal crime as a “one-off” incident, for which he was forced to issue a clarification.

“I don’t know how what I said last Sunday was construed or interpreted. I have said it earlier as well that (the crime) it’s a terrible thing. Now, the CBI (and the) police are investigating the matter. It’s very shameful what has happened,” Sourav Ganguly said.

He hoped that once the investigating agencies find the culprit, the harshest punishment is given, so that nobody else dares to commit such crimes in the future.

Ganguly had said the state of West Bengal or the country as a whole cannot be judged based on an “isolated incident”.

He made these remarks while speaking to reporters during an event at the Biswa-Bangla Convention Centre.

“I don’t think everything should be judged on an isolated incident. There is no room to think that everything or everyone is not safe for this (incident). Such accidents happen all over the world. It is wrong to think that girls are not safe. Not only in West Bengal, but everywhere in India, women are safe. Where we live is the best place. One should not judge by one incident,” Ganguly said.

Vinesh Phogat has seen a lot in the last fortnight. From the high of becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to enter an Olympics final to the low of getting disqualified for being 100 gram overweight on the morning of the gold medal bout, Vinesh has seen a lot. Her appeal for a shared silver medal was dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) too. The support and adulation for Vinesh has not been short though. From the time she landed in India from Paris, Vinesh has been showered with love wherever she has gone. There have been announcement of cash prize too. However, her husband Somvir Rathee has claimed that few organisations have made the false claims of giving her cash prize of ober Rs 16 crore.

“Vinesh Phogat has not received any money from the following organizations, businessmen, companies and parties. All of you are our well-wishers, please do not spread false news. This will not only harm us but will also harm social values. This is just a means to gain cheap popularity,” Rathee wrote in a post on X.

Celebrated wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Saturday received a grand welcome on her return to the country with hundreds of supporters gathering outside the IGI airport, showing immense solidarity with her.

Stars such as Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and panchayat leaders received Vinesh, who endured a heartbreaking exit at the Paris Olympics where she was disqualified for being overweight on the day of her 50kg final.

PCI President Devendra Jhajharia Hails Growing Support For Para-Athletes Ahead Of Paris 2024

Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) president Devendra Jhajharia said that the support given to para-athletes in recent times with many corporates stepping in to assist the players has given a huge boost to the morale of the athletes

Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) president Devendra Jhajharia said that the support given to para-athletes in recent times with many corporates stepping in to assist the players has given a huge boost to the morale of the athletes. India is set to field its largest-ever contingent for the Paralympics, with 84 athletes competing in 12 sports, including archery, athletics, badminton, canoeing, cycling, blind judo, powerlifting, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and taekwondo. The games commence on August 28 and promise to showcase the exceptional talents and dedication of India’s para-athletes.

The PCI chief expressed his appreciation for the increasing support for para-athletes during the send-off ceremony.

“I would like to thank the Government of India, sponsors and the corporates who have come together to support our athletes. Shrachi Group is supporting our para-athletes and I want to continue working together with them as we aspire to strengthen para-sports,” Jhajharia said.

Shrachi Group and Shrachi Sports have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting para-athletes through a partnership with the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI). Earlier this year, Shrachi Group and Shrachi Sports entered into a three-year agreement with the PCI, aimed at bolstering India’s efforts in the upcoming Paris Paralympics.

“Shrachi Sports idea is to enable the youth (kids too) of the country who normally do not get the platform to showcase their talent or even to get trained. As far as the Paralympics is concerned, we thought that awareness of the para-sports is very less in the country when compared to Olympics sports,” said Shrachi Group Executive Director Poonam Tharar.

Watch: Tired Vinesh Phogat Falls Ill During Felicitation In Village, Bajrang Punia Concerned

In a viral video on social medal, Vinesh Phogat was seen lying unconscious on a chair.

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat had a heartbreaking end to her Paris Olympics 2024 campaign as she was disqualified from women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling final for being 100gms overweight. Later, the 29-year-old wrestler even made an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) to be considered for a joint-silver medal. However, her appeal was also rejected and she had to returned home without any medal. But on a lighter note, Vinesh received a grand welcome from her family and fans after she returned to her home town in Haryana.

Upon her arrival at her village Balali, Haryana, Vinesh was felicitated with a gold medal by her supporters and members of the ‘khap’ panchayats. However, a very shocking news has now come to light that during the felicitation ceremony, the renowned wrestler reportedly fell ill and fainted.

After a long flight from Paris, Vinesh also took part in the road show and the felicitation ceremony. So, this long travel and the hectic schedule can be root cause of Vinesh’s poor condition.

Earlier, overwhelmed by the grand reception she received on her arrival from the Paris Olympics, Vinesh said it would be a matter of great pride for her if she could train women wrestlers from her village Balali and they become more successful than her.

Her disqualification had created a furore in India and the wrestling world.

The two-time World Championships medallist wished that someone from Balali would better her wrestling achievements.

‘Whoever Goes Out…’: Jay Shah’s No-Nonsense Verdict On Injured Stars Eyeing Return

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah opened up on the criteria players must follow if they want to make a comeback into the team after getting injured.

Top Team India stars will feature in the Duleep Trophy, with the tournament set to mark the start of the 2024/25 domestic season. With the Indian team’s next assignment scheduled in late Septemeber, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday announced the four squads for the upcoming Duleep Trophy tournament, which will be played between September 5 and 24 in Anantapur. Top stars, minus Virat Kohli, captain Rohit Sharma, pacer Jasprit Bumrah and veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, will feature in the first round of the tournament.

Shubhman Gill, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer have been assigned as captains for the tournament.

In a recent conversation, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah opened up on the absence of Rohit and Virat from the Duleep Trophy. Shah said that forcing Rohit and Virat to play domestic cricket makes no sense, citing workload concerns.

However, Shah insisted that anyone who got injured and eyes a comeback into the national side will have to go through domestic cricket to climb the ladder.

Shah pointed out an incident from 2022 when all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja got injured, and only returned to the team after featuring for his domestic Saurashtra.

Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

“We have been little strict. When Ravindra Jadeja had got injured, I was the one who called him and asked him to play a domestic game. It’s certain now, whoever gets injured and goes out, can only come into the Indian team after proving his fitness in domestic cricket. But it doesn’t make sense to add to Virat and Rohit’s load by asking them to play domestic cricket. They run the risk of getting injured. You also need to look at England and Australia. None of their top players play domestic cricket. We must treat our players respectfully and not treat them like servants. If you look Duleep Trophy squad, apart from Rohit and Virat rest are going to play,” Shah told Times of India.

‘Educate Your Son, Husband, Brothers, Father’: Suryakumar Yadav’s Hard-Hitting Post Amid Outrage Over Kolkata Rape Case

Suryakumar’s Insta post goes viral

Amid the ongoing protests against the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in Kolkata, India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav has sent a strong message to the society. The ace batter has urged people to educate the males in the family. Notably, not many sports stars have come forward and expressed their thoughts on the issue and Suryakumar happens to be the first active Indian cricketer to speak up.

The first line of his Instagram post reads ‘Protect your daughter’, which has been replaced with ‘Educate your son’. The below lines include brothers, fathers, husband, men, and friends, indicating that the males in the society need to be educated.

Suryakumar Yadav’s reaction to Kolkata rape and murder case

The heinous crime committed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has sent shockwaves across the country. The body of the victim was found inside a seminar hall of the hospital on August 9. A civic volunteer was arrested the next day for his alleged involvement in the crime.

Healthcare services remained affected across West Bengal for the tenth consecutive day on Sunday as agitating junior doctors at state-run hospitals continued their cease work demanding justice. The junior doctors have been demanding that the culprits be punished as quickly as possible, and the post-mortem examination report of the victim be made public.

The Calcutta High Court on August 13 ordered the transfer of the probe into the case from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) which started its investigation on August 14.

Vinesh Phogat’s village open heart and purse strings: 750 kg ladoos, chowkidar gifts Rs 100, pagdi and sword

At about 10 am, around the time Vinesh Phogat’s flight from Paris landed in the Capital, 10-year-old Anshaj Kumar, a resident of Balali, was tasked with guarding the temple premises that had 750 kg of desi ghee laddoos.

IT’S BEEN a long day for 10-year-old Anshaj Kumar, a resident of Balali, aka Vinesh Phogat’s village in Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri district which is a three-and-a-half hour drive away from Delhi on most days. At about 10 am, around the time Phogat’s flight from Paris landed in the Capital, he was tasked with guarding the temple premises that had 750 kg of desi ghee laddoos.

The wait for Phogat gets over past midnight, when she finally reaches the village, over 12 hours after she walked out of the Delhi airport. With every Haryana village on the way wanting to honour her, she couldn’t have driven past the men, women and children lined up on the highway.

Through the day, Anshaj sits in a corner of the stage set up for Phogat’s felicitation, maintaining a single-line school notebook that has entries of voluntary donations by the villagers for their “chhori” who missed out on a medal at the Paris Olympics. As the pile of laddoos shrink, the amount in his accounting book increases.

The list of contributors is a heartening read, an indication of how much the villagers — cutting across social strata — care for the little girl who they saw grow up to be a champion wrestler. The neatly-bunched soiled notes in Anshaj’s drawer don’t have the sparkle of gold or silver, but it is an assurance to Phogat that she is not alone.

There is Sanjay Chowkidar, the village watchman who is the tenth person on the list of contributors, with Rs 100 next to his name. Raghbir Master with Rs 500; Shalu Badal with a garland of notes worth Rs 5,100; Kunwar Bir Singh with a pagdi and sword; Natu (Vikrant Fauji) of Fauji Bhaichara group with Rs 21,000 among others.

Deep into the night, as the debate over the Phogat entourage’s GPS location continues, donors keep queuing up. And Anshaj, with a smile, lists their names, counting and re-counting the notes.

Sanjay Chowkidar is reluctant to talk but agrees when coaxed. His memories about Phogat date back to the day when she was barely five years old. “She was like my daughter,” he says, and goes on to narrate his Phogat story. “When I used to take my round at night, she would often tell me, ‘uncle, you are so brave’. See now, who turned out to be brave? She is the bravest girl in the world and the strongest too.” He chokes with emotion, but doesn’t bother to wipe his tears as he takes his seat next to the stage.

‘On night of 6th August and morning of… time wasn’t fair’: Vinesh Phogat opens up on unlucky Olympic disqualification

Taking to social media, Vinesh Phogat opened up on the unfortunate disqualification from the women’s 50kg freestyle final at the Paris Olympics

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat(HT_PRINT)

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, on Friday, opened up on the unfortunate disqualification from the women’s 50kg freestyle final at the Paris Olympics on August 7, in a lengthy social-media post, two days after her appeal for a joint silver medal was dismissed by Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Vinesh stood on the verge of history at the Paris Games, where she beat then-defending champion and world no. 1 Yui Susaki of Japan in her opener en route to becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final. However, she was found overweight by 100 grams during the weight-in ahead of the gold-medal bout, and hence was disqualified and denied a medal.

The 29-year-old from Haryana appealed to the CAS against the United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for a joint silver medal, but after a long wait, her plea was rejected on Wednesday in a decision by the Sole Arbitrator at the court.

On Friday, Vinesh opened up on the cruel turn of fate between the night of August 6 and the following morning. She said that she and her team did not give up until the last minute and rather failed to befriend time, thus leading to the disqualification.

“There is so much more to say and so much more to tell but words will never be enough and maybe I will speak again when the time feels right. On the night of 6th August and the morning of 7th August, all I want to say is that we did not give up, our efforts did not stop, and we did not surrender but the clock stopped and the time was not fair,” she in a social media post.

After the announcement of the dismissal of her application for an Olympic silver medal following disqualification from the women’s 50 kg final at Paris, former Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat took to social media to make a cryptic post. On Wednesday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) released a statement to confirm that, “The application field by Vinesh Phogat on August 7 has been dismissed.” After the release of this statement, Vinesh took to Instagram on Thursday, posting a picture of her laying down on a mat with her hands covering her eyes, as if conveying an emotion of distress.

World No. 1, 82-0 Record: Meet The Opponents Vinesh Phogat Beat In Women’s 50kg Freestyle Wrestling At Paris Olympics 2024

Vinesh Phogat beat reigning Olympic gold medalist Yui Susaki, who boasted an 82-0 international record prior to the match.

File image of Vinesh Phogat.© X (Twitter)

India’s star wrestler Vinesh Phogat was on cusp of history in the women’s freestyle 50kg category at Paris Olympics 2024, after two giant-killing victories in the Round of 16 and quarter-final. Vinesh beat two titans of 50kg wrestling: Japan’s Yui Susaki and Ukraine’s Oksana Livach. In the semi-final, she beat Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez. However, before her final bout, Vinesh Phogat, the 29-year-old was disqualified from the women’s 50kg free-style final for being 100gm overweight at the time of weigh-in. Vinesh, who was making her third Olympic appearance here, announced her retirement from the sport a day after her disqualification, saying that she doesn’t have the strength to continue.

The world championships bronze-medallist had resorted to desperate measures to save herself from disqualification, including cutting her hair, going without food and water, and working out an entire night.

She ultimately needed IV fluids due to extreme dehydration and her plight evoked sympathy across the board.

Let’s take a deep-dive about Vinesh’s two opponents, to get a better grasp of how brilliant her wins were.

Yui Susaki

Susaki is not only the no. 1-ranked wrestler, she is also the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the category. What’s even more crazy is that she had won the gold in Tokyo 2020 without giving up a single point to her opponent.

Before her match against Vinesh, Susaki had never lost an international wrestling match, boasting a mind-boggling record of 82-0. She is also a four-time gold medalist at the Wrestling World Championships. Open her Wikipedia page, and you won’t spot a single tinge of silver or bronze; it’s all gold. Susaki was the overwhelming favourite to retain her Olympic gold, but lost 3-2 in a tight contest against Vinesh.

Oksana Livach

After the monumental victory over Susaki, Vinesh Phogat rode on the momentum to beat eighth seed Oksana Livach from Ukraine in the quarter-final. Livach is a former World Championships bronze medalist (2018), and narrowly lost out on bronze in the 2024 European Wrestling Championships.

Much like Vinesh, Livach entered the quarter-final with great momentum, having won her Round of 16 match 10-0. However, Vinesh overpowered her opponent yet again, to seal her spot in the semi-final of the women’s 50kg freestyle event at Paris 2024.

6, 6, 6, 6, 6: Kieron Pollard Smashes Rashid Khan To The Stands In The Hundred 2024

Kieron Pollard in action at The Hundred.© X (Twitter)

West Indies’ T20 great Kieron Pollard has smashed Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan for five consecutive sixes in The Hundred Men’s Competition 2024. Playing for Southern Brave, Pollard’s late onslaught ensured that his side got over the finish line, chasing a tricky target of 127 in 100 balls against Trent Rocket. Southern Brave were struggling at 78/6 after 76 balls, before Pollard went berserk on one of the best spinners of this generation. Pollard becomes one of very few batsmen to hit five sixes in a row.

Pollard was struggling on 6 off 14 balls, but turned the tide completely in the space of five balls. The first one was hit over mid-wicket, the next two over long-off, the fourth again over mid-wicket and finally the fifth again over long-off. In the space of five balls, Rashid Khan’s economy was completely spoilt, as he ended up giving away 40 runs from his 20 balls.

The Hundred has struggled to establish popularity among cricket fans over the world, with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) recently welcoming investment from IPL and Indian owners. However, performances like these can help catapult its popularity.

Pollard wasn’t too impressed by the situation his team had brought themselves into before his rescue act. “Hopefully some lessons learnt and we won’t put ourselves in such a situation next time around,” he said after the game.

Simone Biles’ birth mom begs Olympic gymnast for forgiveness: ‘Don’t judge me on my past’

Simone Biles’ birth mother, Shanon Biles, wants to reconnect and reconcile with the Olympic gymnast.

In a lengthy interview with the Daily Mail Tuesday, Shanon explained how her drug and alcohol abuse cost her her children.

Shanon — who still lives in Columbus, Ohio, where Simone, 27, and her sister, Adria Biles, 22, were born — recalled losing two of her three daughters first to foster care and then to adoption by her father, Ronald Biles, 75, and his wife, Nellie Biles.

The couple brought the girls to live with them in Houston when Simone was just 6.

Shanon Biles just gave a lengthy interview in which she begged Simone, seen here at the 2024 Paris Olympics, for forgiveness.

Shanon’s two eldest children — daughter Ashley Biles-Thomas, 34, and son Tevin Biles-Thomas, 29 — were taken in by Ronald’s sister.

At the time, Shanon was struggling with addiction, which led to significant financial and legal problems.

“It took me six years before I saw my children again. I was respecting my dad to let the kids transition. He felt that was the best thing for them,” the 52-year-old told the outlet.

“It was hard to give up my kids, but I had to do what I had to do. I wasn’t able to care for them. I was still using, and he didn’t want me coming in and out of their lives when I wasn’t right.”

However, since 2022, Shanon has managed to stay out of trouble and now works as a cashier at discount grocery store Save-A-Lot.

“I am a recovering addict and will always be an addict. But there’s a way [to recovery],” said Shanon, who is currently clean and sober. “You have to learn to stay away from people, places and things. Change your routine and live your life. Live your best life.”

Shanon insisted that she is “not the person [she] used to be,” going on to describe herself today as a “loving person” who would “give you the shirt off [her] back.”

Though she has Simone’s “direct number,” she “won’t use it.”

Vinesh Phogat leaves Paris Olympic Games village ahead of CAS verdict: ‘Feeling better, still not talking to anyone’

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will announce the much-awaited verdict on Vinesh Phogat’s plea for a joint silver medal on Tuesday

Vinesh Phogat left Paris Olympic Games village on Monday

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat left the Paris Olympic Games village on Monday following the end of the closing ceremony for the 33rd edition of the Summer Games. The wrestler is expected to arrive in New Delhi on Tuesday, when the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will announce the much-awaited verdict on her plea for a joint silver medal after her disqualification at the Paris Olympics.

Exactly a week back, Vinesh took the wrestling world by storm when she beat then-defending champion and world no. 1 Yui Susaki in her Paris Olympics opener en route to becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to make an Olympics final. However, she was debarred from the women’s 50kg freestyle gold-medal bout on the following morning after she was found being overweight by 100 grams during the customary weigh-in.

Crestfallen by the cruel turn of events and having suffered from dehydration, following an extreme route to cut down the three kilos of weight gained through the course of her three bouts on Tuesday, Vinesh lost consciousness and was admitted to a polyclinic inside the Games village. Upon recovery, she appealed to the CAS, demanding a joint silver medal alongside Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who had lost to the Indian in the semis but replaced her for the final bout following her disqualification.

Even as India remains hopeful of a positive verdict from the CAS on Tuesday, sources close to India Today have confirmed that while Vinesh has been feeling better since being disqualified last week, she hasn’t talked to anyone yet.

“Vinesh is feeling a little better now, started eating a bit. She is not talking to anyone though. We are all with her,” sources told the website ahead of her departure from the Games Village.

Vinesh had stayed back in Paris owing to her appeal to the CAS. The appeal was accepted earlier last week, and the wrestler was even virtually present during the hearing on Friday. She was represented by senior counsels Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania, and sole Arbitrator Dr Annabelle Bennett of Australia heard all the arguments for the case during the three-hour hearing.

India in 2024 Olympics: Just 1.4% of its land area bagged 66% of medals

How did India perform in the 2024 Paris Olympics, in which it bagged six medals, vis-à-vis the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2016 Rio Games? What gives hope for more medals and which state won the most medals for India?

In Greek mythology, Paris, after whom the French City of Love is named, was a skilled archer. India’s archery team didn’t hit the bull’s eye, but the Indian Olympic squad’s performance was commendable. For India, Paris Olympics was better than the 2016 Rio Olympics, when the country won just two medals. However, the tally of six this time — five bronzes and a silver — was sub-par when compared to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. There is more to the Olympics story when we look at the facts and numbers.

One of the unmistakable outcomes of this Olympic Games is the fourth-place finish by Indians. There were six fourth place finishes, which offer hope of a better show by bettering performances the next time.

Also, Haryana is the top state when it comes to winning medals for India. The state, with just 1.4% of India’s total land area, won four of the six medals, which translates to 66% of the haul.

Shooter Manu Bhaker won two bronze medals in this Olympics. This is the first since Independence and second in India’s Olympic history, if Norman Pritchard’s two silvers in the 1900 Paris Olympics are considered.

Bhaker won a medal in the women’s 10m air pistol and another for the 10m air pistol mixed team event along with Sarabjot Singh. Both the shooters are from Haryana. Neeraj Chopra won a silver medal in the Men’s Javelin Throw and Aman Sehrawat won a bronze in the Men’s 57kg freestyle event. They are from Haryana as well.

Haryana is 21st in terms of area in India, covering 44,212 square kilometres (17,070 square miles) or less than 1.4% of India’s total land area of 3,287,263 square kilometres.

Swapnil Kusale won a bronze medal for the Men’s 50m rifle 3 positions. Kusale is from Maharashtra.

So, two states — Haryana and Maharashtra — bagged the five individual medals for India.

The sixth medal came in group sports. India won a bronze in men’s field hockey. In the hockey team, nine out of the 17 players were from Punjab.

India is at 71st position in the medal tally among 84 countries that participated at the Paris Olympics 2024. But how does that translate to when read in contrast to our population?

INDIA HAS ONE MEDAL FOR 242 MILLION PEOPLE

The medal and population ratio reveals that there is a winner among the states in India.

In India, with a population of 1.45 billion, there is one medal for every 241.67 million people. But in the state of Haryana, there is one medal for every 7 million people. This is in contrast to one medal for every 125 million people in the state of Maharashtra.

India has a long way to go when we compare the Olympic medal count and population ratio data from across the globe.

The US and China both won 40 gold each. US came top of the medals tally because of the total number of medals won.

The US has won 126 medals this year, and it has a population of 332.18 million. There is one medal for every 2.64 million people in the US. The US has the highest medal count in the Paris Olympics.

The next is China, with 91 medals. With a population of 1.42 billion, there is a medal each for 15.6 million people.

“Garden Mein Ghoomne Wala”: Sunil Gavaskar Blasts Lakshya Sen’s Olympics 2024 Meltdown

Singles player Lakshya Sen became the first Indian male shuttler to entered the Olympic semi-final, but lost crucial matches despite being in a strong situation.

Olympics 2024: Sunil Gavaskar and Lakshya Sen

The Paris Olympics 2024 has been a bittersweet experience for the Indian sports fans. After the high of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where India returned with a record seven medals, the expectation was that at the Paris Olympics, the haul would be bigger. However, following a string of narrow misses and some unlucky incidents (like the Vinesh Phogat disqualification), India won six medals. Badminton was one sport where India has fared well in the last three editions.

Starting from the 2012 Olympics, Indian badminton stars have returned with at least one medal. However, this time there were no medals. The star duo of Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty could not enter the semi-finals. Singles player Lakshya Sen became the first Indian male shuttler to enter the Olympic semi-final but lost crucial matches despite being in a strong situation.

Amid such displays, badminton legend Prakash Padukone said that It was time for the badminton stars to bring home good results as there was enough support from the government and other stakeholders.

The comment was criticised by many. Former Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar, however, has supported Prakash Padukone and critisiced Lakshya Sen’s mental block.

“As far back as 2017/18, Prakash, who I unfortunately meet rarely, had told me about this kid, Lakshya Sen. He had taken him under his wing and was his guide and mentor. He would have watched Lakshya’s progress step by step. As he came to the cusp of an Olympic medal, Prakash was by the courtside along with the hard-working and indefatigable Vimal Kumar to see the fulfillment of not just Lakshya’s dream but also that of the entire community of Indian badminton lovers,” Gavaskar wrote in a column for Sportstar.

“To then see a 20-17 and 7-0 lead being squandered off in the semifinal (vs Viktor Axelsen) and then lose the bronze medal match (vs Lee Zee Jia) after winning the first game comfortably must have been gut-wrenching indeed. He, Vimal Kumar, the BAI, and the government’s TOPS had done everything possible, but when it came to the crunch, Lakshya was, in the famous words of the Indian cricket team captain (Rohit Sharma), ‘garden mein ghoomne wala.'”

The rise and fall of North Korea – the sleeping giant of women’s football

Getty Images

“Normally when there are 30 shots in the game, it is the United States with about 25 of ’em. Not today!”

It wasn’t just the ESPN commentator who was shocked.

Heather O’Reilly had scored the game’s final goal, dragging world number ones and two-time champions United States to a 2-2 draw in their opening match at the 2007 Women’s World Cup.

O’Reilly wasn’t surprised by the scoreline though. Or how evenly-fought the game was. She knew it would be tough.

Instead, as the final whistle blew, it was the attitude of the US’s opponents, who saw a chance missed, rather than a point gained, that struck her.

“I remember North Korea seeming disappointed,” says O’Reilly.

“Their body language seemed to say ‘oh my gosh, we were so close to taking down the giant’.”

North Korea is the world’s most isolated country, a state based around the infallibility of Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un and a deep suspicion of the outside world.

Yet, despite living standards being well behind most other nations, North Korea has been one of the strongest female football nations on the planet.

When they took on the United States in 2007, they were ranked fifth in the world and amid a run of three Asian titles in the space of a decade.

Their record at youth level is even better. In 2016, they won the U20 Women’s World Cup, defeating Spain, the United States and France in the knockout rounds. That same year, their under-17 team also lifted their age-grade World Cup.

“The game in 2007 was challenging, really super hard,” remembers O’Reilly of her meeting with North Korea’s senior side. “It was hard to get the ball off them, they were buzzing around, very quick.”

There was another challenge though, one that was unique to North Korea.

“It was just such a cloud of uncertainty,” says O’Reilly. “The film we had on them was very limited, even by the standard of the times.

“Every time we played North Korea, it was always a mystery.”

The mystery now is, after a doping controversy and a four-year absence from international football, can North Korea’s women be a force once again?

O’Reilly (left) competes for the ball during the United States’ 2-2 draw with North Korea at the 2007 Women’s World cup

O’Reilly and her United States team-mates may have lacked footage of North Korea. Brigitte Weich certainly doesn’t.

The Austrian filmmaker spent five years following the North Korean team, gaining unprecedented access to it’s inner workings and players for her 2009 documentary Hana, dul, sed., external

She says that, like with most things in North Korea, the country’s over-sized impact on the women’s game is attributed to the man at the very top.

“The players constantly said to us that the Dear Leader Kim Jong-il [Kim Jong-un’s predecessor] personally supported women’s football,” says Weich.

“Of course, they refer everything directly to the leader and nothing happens without him guiding, supporting or wanting it.

“But it is a very hierarchical and totalitarian dictatorship and I think that is kind of true.”

Weich relays a theory that North Korea’s focus on women’s football sprung from a stage in Mexico in 1986.

At that year’s Fifa congress, Norwegian Ellen Wille, only 4ft 11in tall, stepped up to the lectern and started her speech – the first by a woman at a Fifa Congress – with a scream of anger., external

She was infuriated by the sidelining of the women’s game, which had been consigned to half a page in Fifa’s weighty annual report.

She demanded a World Cup for women. Fifa, shell-shocked, agreed. And, the theory goes, the North Korean delegates in the room returned to Pyongyang with a plan.

“Maybe someone came to Kim Jong-il and said to him that we could use this,” says Weich.

“North Korea is not the best in economics, science, human rights and the rest, but in countries like this they can be good at some sports because, from the top down, they can focus on training and nothing else.

“I don’t think it is a total myth that Kim Jong-il had an interest in women’s football, perhaps because he saw it as a chance to show up at a world level.”

North Korea celebrate a goal against Sweden at the 2007 Women’s World Cup

The plan was simple, sweeping and efficient. Formal football training at school from an early age, scouts sent out across the country, and, for the best, a central school of excellence and a raft of army teams allowing them to train and develop full-time at the state’s expense.

The material rewards for North Korea’s players aren’t big-money contracts or overseas moves. Instead relocation, rather than remuneration, is the lure.

For many in North Korea, life is unremittingly grim.

Shortages in food, healthcare and heating are common, particularly in rural areas.

A United Nations report in 2023 detailed the forced labour and sexual violence that is common in detention centres, which citizens can be transferred to for various crimes against the state.

Some of those who have escaped the country have recounted women prisoners undergoing forced abortions., external

Pyongyang presents differently. Living standards and leisure opportunities are better than in the provinces.

High-rise appartment blocks, a 150,000-capacity stadium, bowling alleys, department stores, a zoo, and a fairground are part of a faded Soviet-era cityscape of concrete monumentalism.

“It seems to be a privilege to live in Pyongyang and not in the countryside,” says Weich.

“The players received, as a gift from the leader, apartments in Pyongyang and could bring their parents to Pyongyang. Being picked for the team can be a career for a woman and her entire family – it can be life-changing.”

In the 2000s, when England’s women would rarely attract crowds in five figures, North Korea were packing out the 50,000-capacity Kim Il-sung Stadium.

Whether or not all the spectators attended willingly – crowds of military personnel or whole factory workforces have been used as the backdrop to state occasions – the players are high-profile figures.

“They are stars,” says Weich. “Fans know them, recognise them and ask them for autographs.”

“There was even a soap opera based around the women’s football team, with fictional troubles – parents opposing them playing or forbidden love affairs and so on.”

Getting on the national team also means players can get out of the country. North Koreans are not allowed to travel abroad without permission from the state.

International tournaments and fixtures bring players into contact with realities unknown to many of their compatriots.

“The players I followed said ‘the Americans are much taller than us and much stronger than us, because they have enough food and all kinds of things we don’t have’ – but our minds are so strong, no-one expects that,'” remembers Weich.

“They all loved football, but the leader and the nation were big motivations.

“That is how they are brought up: the glory of the nation is everything and the individual is nothing.”

Neeraj Chopra etched his name in history books by winning a silver medal at the Paris Olympics. The star javelin thrower came up with a throw of 89.45m to finish at the second spot. Neeraj entered the final as the favourite to retain his gold medal but he finished second. A couple of days after winning the silver medal, Neeraj won the hearts of the fans with his gesture.

During an address, Neeraj apologised to the fans and said: “There’s nothing much to say, but I’ve brought something to show you all, sorry, like last time, there was no national anthem was played, what I had thought, didn’t happen but medal is medal, I had worked hard and winning a medal for the country and taking a lap of the track with the flag, that’s a different feeling altogether.”

Arshad Nadeem pipped Neeraj and won the gold medal. He started the final with a foul throw. The Pakistani javelin thrower set an Olympic record with his second throw and hurled the spear to a distance of 92.97m.

He finished the competition with another 90m throw but his second attempt was enough for him to finish at the top spot. Neeraj’s only legal throw was enough for him to secure a silver medal.

At the Paris Olympics, it was the first time when Arshad defeated Neeraj head-to-head competitions. The Indian javelin thrower still has a lead of 9-1 over Arshad.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli Might Feature In Duleep Trophy Ahead Of Bangladesh Tests: Report

According to a report in The Indian Express, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal Suryakumar and Kuldeep Yadav have been asked to play in the Duleep Trophy.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli Might Feature In Duleep Trophy Ahead Of Bangladesh Tests: Report (Photo credit: BCCI)
Ahead of the two Tests against Bangladesh, which will be crucial for India’s chances to qualify for a third consecutive World Test Championship finals, skipper Rohit Sharma and ace batter Virat Kohli are likely to feature in the Duleep Trophy, a report in The Indian Express. The senior selection committee wants all the players available for the domestic tournament which will be played in a new format this season starting September 5.

Not just Rohit and Kohli, but the report says that Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryakumar and Kuldeep Yadav have also been asked to feature in the tournament.

Ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah will not be playing the Duleep Trophy since he has been an extended rest period after IPL 2024 and the T20 World Cup, essentially to manage his workload.

The selectors are all set to discuss Bumrah’s inclusion for the two Tests against Bangladesh as India have a gruelling 10 Tests line-up in the next four months including five crucial ones in Australia.

The Duleep Trophy is supposed to be played in Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh and since the place isn’t connected by flights, BCCI is mulling the possibility of playing one round of the tournament at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

The six games of the Duleep Trophy will start on September 5 and end on September 24 while the first Test between India vs Bangladesh will be played in Chennai from September 19, which means that senior Indian players whose teams reach the finals won’t be available.

Bhutan’s marathon runner gets standing ovation for last-place finish

The last athlete to finish Sunday’s marathon, an hour and a half after the winner, did so to a standing ovation on the final day of the Paris Games.
Bhutan’s Kinzang Lhamo finished the hilly and hot course in three hours, 52 minutes and 59 seconds, slowing to a walk at points but encouraged through the last kilometres by spectators cycling and running alongside her.
As she ran down the home straight, fans in the stands in front of the Invalides monument got to their feet to cheer her on as she crossed the finish line, the 80th woman to complete the course.

Spectators around the world saw Lhamo as an embodiment of the Olympic spirit – the idea that the Games are not about winning but about taking part.
Lhamo, 26, was participating in her first international competition, and was the Himalayan nation’s flagbearer in the opening ceremony as well as being the only woman in Bhutan’s delegation of three athletes.
She took up running after joining Bhutan’s army. She won the Bhutan marathon last year and this year, clocking 3 hours and 26 minutes in March, and came second in 2022 in the Snowman Race, an extreme event covering 203 km (126 miles) through the Himalayan mountains.

“It has always been one of my dreams, to compete at such a stage,” Lhamo had said ahead of her Olympic debut, in an interview with Deutsche Welle.
“My first goal is to complete the marathon and then break my own personal record,” she said. While her time on Sunday was slower than her personal best, she certainly finished in style.
To some, Lhamo’s grit and determination in completing the Paris course also brought to mind Tanzania’s John Stephen Akhwari who was injured but still limped to the finish line of the Olympic marathon in 1968.

Ten viral moments from the Paris Olympics

Not all viral moments at an Olympics end in gold.

With thousands in Paris and millions watching across the world, nothing is missed.

Whether athletes or even spectators are trying or not, in today’s world you can go viral in any given moment.

From an unexpected swimmer at La Defense Arena to a casual Turkish shooter, this Games has had plenty of unique moments.

Here is a look at the best of them.

Random swimming trunks man

Spectators at La Defense Arena saw some of the fittest athletes on the planet racing.

Packed with up to 17,000 on the big nights, those swimmers had trained for years to deliver on the biggest stage.

However, when a swimming cap was stuck at the bottom of the pool, they needed someone else to save the day.

A middle-aged man was on hand, in some funky coloured trunks, to dive in and retrieve the hat, before raising his arm to receive a cheer from the crowd.

Turkish shooter’s casual pose

You know you’re cool when everyone copies you.

Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec, who won a silver medal in the mixed team 10m air pistol event, has been arguably the most popular character in Paris.

The 51-year-old opted not to wear the high-tech gear of his shooting competitors, and held a nonchalant pose, with his non-shooting hand casually tucked into his pocket.

That image spread quickly around social media, with Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis and Turkey midfielder Irfan Can Kahveci both copying the pose while celebrating.

‘100 grams excess weight was caused by…’: What Vinesh Phogat revealed to CAS over weigh-in fiasco at Paris Olympics

Check out the details of the arguments Vinesh Phogat and IOA used in their defence during CAS hearing

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the women’s 50kg final. (PTI)(HT_PRINT)

Although India ended their campaign at the Paris Olympics on Saturday with six medals – one silver and five bronze – the nation has kept their fingers crossed on a seventh, which could see the contingent match their best-ever medal-tally feat achieved in the Tokyo Games, as they eagerly await the decision from the Court of Arbitration or Sports (CAS), where Vinesh Phogat appealed for a silver medal. The Indian wrestler was disqualified ahead of her gold-medal bout on Wednesday in women’s 50kg freestyle for being 100 grams overweight in the morning weigh-in.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has filed an appeal to challenge United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) decision. Vinesh virtually attended the hearing on Friday, which lasted close to three hours, where senior advocates Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania presented her side of the argument. Dr. Annabelle Bennett AC SC (Australia) is the sole arbitrator for this case.

What did Vinesh Phogat’s team reveal to CAS over weigh-in fiasco at Paris Olympics?

Last Tuesday, Vinesh became the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final after she won three straight bouts, including the opener against world no. 1 and then-defending champion Yui Susaki of Japan. While she was well within the permissible limit during the weigh-in before the preliminary rounds, her weight increased to almost three kilos by Tuesday night. According to a report in Indian Express, the Indian side reasoned that Vinesh did not stay within the permissible weight limit due to the distance between the Champ de Mars Arena (the competition venue) and the Athletes Village, and the tight schedule between bouts.

Vinesh stayed awake all night before the gold-medal bout, jogging and skipping to lose weight. Her support staff even went to the extent of cutting her hair and drawing out blood. However, the 29-year-old was still found to be 100 grams over the allowed limit during the morning weigh-in.

The report further added that Vinesh’s team argued that the 100 grams of extra weight would not have given her any competitive edge and it was a result of ‘classic and essential recovery process.’

“The excess of 100g is extremely negligible (representing around 0.1 to 0.2 percent of the athlete’s weight) and can easily be caused by the bloating of a human body during summer weather, as the heat makes the human body retain more water, scientifically for survival purposes. It can also be due to muscle mass increase as the athlete competed three times on the same day. It can also be caused by the food consumption of the athlete after the competitions to sustain her health and integrity for the demanding competitions,” Vinesh’s counsel submitted.

Boxer Lin Yu-ting wins gold, following Imane Khelif to conclude an Olympics filled with scrutiny

Lin Yu-ting fought to remain poised and calm throughout the Paris Olympics boxing tournament, even when it seemed like most of the chattering world was maligning her, misrepresenting her and questioning the very nature of her being.

The flyweight shut off her social media, kept up her training and focused on earning one proficient victory after another.

But when she heard Taiwan’s anthem while standing on the top podium at Roland Garros with a gold medal around her neck, Lin suddenly broke down in cathartic sobs.

She cried not only for the tumult of the past two weeks, but for a lifetime in boxing that culminated in this gold-medal victory over previously unfathomable challenges.

“I saw images flashing, and I thought about the beginning of my career when I started boxing,” Lin said. “All the difficult practices, the times that I got injured, the competitors I fought against. All these images flashed in my head. There are times of great pain. There are times of great joy. I cried because I was so touched.”

Imane Khelif wins boxing gold to cap 2024 Olympics defined by gender controversy

Imane Khelif’s path through the 2024 Olympics — through the victories in her fights and the gender controversy that has overshadowed those wins — has ended with a gold medal.

Khelif, a 25-year-old from Algeria, defeated China’s Yang Liu on Friday by a 5-0 decision to secure the top spot in her welterweight boxing division.

She won the first two rounds and that set the stage for a celebration following the third one, which included an emotional medal ceremony where Khelif received plenty of support from fans in attendance at Roland Garros.

“For eight years, this has been my dream, and I’m now the Olympic champion and gold medalist,” Khelif said through an interpreter, per the Associated Press.

Her time in Paris, though, was filled with the lingering effects of a controversy that started last year when she was disqualified from the world championships — along with Taiwan boxer Lin Yu-ting — for allegedly failing a gender test issued by the International Boxing Association.

Yu-ting, who has a gold medal fight on Saturday in her division, has blasted that test as “false” and said that the process “didn’t follow any standards.”

Khelif added that winning was extra special with all of the recent detractors. “That also gives my success a special taste because of those attacks,” she said.

Khelif, according to the AP, said earlier in the week that she didn’t “care about that” controversy, which has followed her throughout her dominant victories.

“I wish to be ready and show a good standard, show my talent, because I want to entertain everyone,” Khelif, who has always identified as female, said, according to the Associated Press.

The controversy began after Khelif defeated Italy’s Angela Carini in just 46 seconds to start her first fight, with Carini withdrawing and saying that “this is unjust.”

“CAS Arbitrator Said…”: On Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic Silver Verdict Date, Lawyer Says This

Vinesh Phogat appealed the CAS, an international body established in 1984 to settle disputes related to sport through arbitration, for a shared Olympic silver

Olympics 2024: Vinesh Phogat© AFP

Vinesh Phogat’s hearing in Paris at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ended. The star Indian wrestler had appealed to the CAS after she was disqualified from the 50kg wrestling final at the Paris Olympics for being 100 gram overweight. Earlier, Vinesh was assured of a silver medal after entering the final of 5okg with three convincing wins but the disqualification saw her finish outside the medal bracket. Though Vinesh was within the permissible weight limit on the first day of the competition, on the second day she was found to be 100 gram overweight and was excluded from the Olympic wrestling final.

Vinesh appealed the CAS, an international body established in 1984 to settle disputes related to sport through arbitration, for a shared silver. The hearing of the appeal took place on Friday and went on for three hours in Paris.

Vinesh, who was represented by four French lawyers, was present at the hearing virtually. Also present were lawyers Haris Salve and Vidushpat Singhania representing the Indian Olympics Association (IOA). The United World Wrestling (UWW) had their lawyer too at the hearing. There were referee and technical officials from UWW present at the hearing.

Dr Annabelle Bennett AC SC (AUS) was the sole arbitrator for CAS. She heard both parties’ arguments patiently. Vinesh’s lawyers argued that the wrestlers disqualification was not right. The CAS said that there is an operating procedure for which it was taking time but added that the verdict will be delivered soon.

Singhania told NDTV that he was confident of a positive outcome. “We were the lawyers of the IOA. Harish Salve was leading the argument and I was assisting him. By an large everybody argument was heard,” he told NDTV.

“The CAS arbitrator said I will give the operational rules order soon. The detailed reasoning will be released later. The hearing went well. The basic ask of Vinesh’s lawyer was that she should be given silver medal.”

Earlier, the CAS had released a statement on Vinesh Phogat.

CAS Statement On Vinesh Phogat’s Plea:

“An application was filed at the CAS Ad hoc Division at 16:45 CEST on 7 August 2024 by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat (the Applicant) in relation to the decision taken by United World Wrestling (UWW) to replace her, because of her failed second weigh-in, before the gold medal match of the Women’s Freestyle 50kg competition at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 that was due to commence at 18:15 CEST the same day (the Challenged Decision),” the statement from the CAS, issued on Friday, read.

Japan’s b-girl Ami wins Olympic breaking’s first gold medal

Japan’s b-girl Ami won gold at the Olympics ‘ first breaking event by spinning, flipping and toprocking past a field of 16 dancers Friday in a high-energy competition that may not return for future Games.

Ami, legally named Ami Yuasa, won all three rounds in a battle against b-girl Nicka (Dominika Banevič) from Lithuania to clinch the gold, wrapping up a long day of breakers putting hip-hop culture on the Olympic stage with their flow, rhythm and skill at Place de la Concorde stadium.

“Breaking is my expression,” Yuasa said. It’s an “expression, an art, but I want to say that breaking also could be part of sports.”

B-girls stunned the crowd with power moves like headspins, windmills and backflips. Fans remained energetic throughout the competition, which began in the afternoon and ended just before 10 p.m.

Beginning in the quarterfinals phase, eight b-girls from the original 17 squared off in knockout battles of three rounds each to narrow down to the finals. Banevič won the silver medal, and China’s b-girl 671 (Liu Qingyi) took the bronze after battling with b-girl India (India Sardjo) from the Netherlands to “Boom!” by The Roots. Liu is a relative newcomer to the breaking scene.

“Olympics needed breaking because it’s like a breath of fresh air,” Banevič said. “Such a big amount of people saw breaking for the first time, like it’s huge. And I’m happy that I was able to represent at the highest level of the art form for breaking.”

American disappointment at Olympic breaking
Both American b-girls were eliminated in the first round, a blow to the country representing the birthplace of hip-hop and breaking culture. B-girl Logistx (legal name Logan Edra) and b-girl Sunny (Sunny Choi) both ranked in the top 12 internationally but came up short of the quarterfinals.

“I feel like I still shined and I feel like I still represented the dance and had some moments,” Logistx said. “It was such a big opportunity, it’s such a big platform, and I’m really happy that we’re here.”

Breaking makes its Olympic debut
A panel of nine judges, all b-boys and b-girls in their own right from around the world, scored the breakers based on the Trivium judging system: on technique, vocabulary, execution, musicality and originality — each accounts for 20% of the final score.

Each of the b-girls began by catching the beat as they danced while on their feet — a series called “toprocking” — before launching into their footwork moves on the floor. The soundtrack to their routines was a surprise for each of them, as two DJs spun records on a turntable set up behind the judges.

The judges sat between the circular floor, modeled after a record, and a massive replica of a boombox, in a nod to the musical root of breaking — the breakbeat itself — which is the moment when a song’s vocals drop and the DJ loops the beat over and over. That allows b-boys and b-girls to make their mark on the dance floor.

Breaking is judged qualitatively because of its roots as an art form, and judges use a sliding scale to score each round and battle, adjusting the scale towards the breaker who is winning in each of the above criteria. Throughout, two emcees respond to the personalities and signature moves of each of the breakers to hype up the crowd.

The challenge for organizers was to bring breaking and hip-hop culture to a mass audience, including many viewers who were skeptical about the dance form’s addition to the Olympic roster. But after Friday’s marathon of battles, there’s no doubting the athletic ability and physicality.

Beyond their physical ability, breakers had to make sure to showcase their style and individuality — essential to the culture of hip-hop and breaking.

In all, 33 breakers representing 15 countries and the Refugee Olympic Team made Olympic history on Friday. On Saturday, the b-boys take the stage in what might be their only shot to battle it out for god at the Olympics in the foreseeable future. Breaking was added as an Olympic sport for Paris, but it is not on the slate for Los Angeles in 2028.

Before the battle began, American rapper Snoop Dogg made a grand entrance into the stadium to the soundtrack of “Drop it Like it’s Hot,” prompting cheers and dancing in the stands. The emcees introduced the 17 b-girls competing on Friday, with the b-girls from France and the U.S. received the loudest applause from the crowd.
