Asia Cup 2023: Virat Kohli, KL Rahul & Kuldeep Yadav Star As India Register Record Win vs Pakistan In 2-Day Super 4 Clash

Chasing a mammoth 357 for victory, Pakistan were restricted to 128 for 8 with their last players batters not coming out to bat due to injuries as India won by 228 runs.

In a Super Four match of the Asia Cup marred by rain, India achieved its most significant margin of victory ever against its arch-rivals, Pakistan, winning by a staggering 228 runs.

India delivered an imposing performance, amassing a formidable total of 356 for 2. Virat Kohli (122 not out off 94 balls) and KL Rahul (111 not out off 106 balls) both notched centuries, with Rahul making a stylish comeback to international cricket.

Pakistan, led by Babar Azam, faced a daunting task during their chase and managed only 128 for 8 as Kuldeep Yadav’s sensational bowling spell (5/25) dismantled their batting lineup.

Virat Kohli’s century in this match marked his 47th in ODIs, leaving him just two centuries shy of Sachin Tendulkar’s remarkable record of 49.

Record-Breaking Partnership

Kohli and Rahul formed an unbeaten third-wicket partnership, setting a new record for the highest ODI partnership between India and Pakistan, accumulating a total of 233 runs.

During his innings, Kohli achieved several personal milestones, becoming the fastest batsman to reach 13,000 ODI runs and securing his fourth century at the R Premadasa Stadium, a feat previously achieved only by Hashim Amla.

Former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad came down heavily on the Asian Cricket Council for keeping a reserve day only for the India vs Pakistan Super 4 match while there is a rain threat looming large over all the matches of the tournament to be held at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The ACC made the announcement on Friday. “If adverse weather suspends play during the Pak vs India game, the match will continue on 11th September 2023 from the point it was suspended,” a statement said.

The arch-rivals are scheduled to play in Colombo on Sunday but thundery showers are forecast for the Sri Lankan capital over the weekend. As soon as the news became public, it was meted with harsh criticism on social media. Prasad launched a no-holds-barred attack on the organisers, calling the move “absolutely shameless” “a mockery” and “unethical”.

“If true this is absolute shamelessness. The organisers have made a mockery and it is unethical to have a tournament with rules being different for the other two teams, Prasad tweeted.

The former pacer did not stop there. He went on to add that it would be fair if rain played spoilsport on both days of the India vs Pakistan match and the “malicious plans” didn’t succeed.

Ishan Kishan (82) and Hardik Pandya (87) bailed India to 266 after Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf created havoc in the early stages. Afridi was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan with a 4-fer while Rauf and Naseem Shah nabbed three wickets each in a first-ever instance of pacers picking all 10 wickets in an Asia Cup game. Earlier, India captain Rohit Sharma had won the toss and opted to bat first in their tournament opener.

Pitch Report by Ravi Shastri

This pitch has more grass than the previous one, the pitch that was used during Pakistan vs Nepal. This track looks slow and bounce can be on the lower side. The ball might grip early on, you might see spin. A score of 260-270 can be challenging on this wicket.

Nine ICC World Cup games rescheduled: India to play Pakistan on Oct 14

The marquee World Cup match between arch-rivals India and Pakistan will now be played on October 14, one day before the original slot, the ICC confirmed on Wednesday as the world governing body announced rescheduling nine games of the tournament.

As per the latest update, Pakistan and England will have three of their games rescheduled (either date or time), while dates of India’s two games have been altered.

The other India game that has been rescheduled is their last league match against the Netherlands which was originally scheduled for November 12 but now it will be held on November 11 in Bengaluru.

That India versus Pakistan match will be advanced by a day was reported by PTI recently after security agencies expressed inability to provide adequate security on October 15, which is the first day of Hindu festival, Navratri.

As a result, England’s fixture against Afghanistan in New Delhi will be moved from Saturday, October 14 and will now be played 24 hours later on Sunday, October 15.

World Cup: India vs Pakistan match rescheduled to October 14, few more changes expected

The marquee India-Pakistan match in the upcoming ODI World Cup will be advanced by a day to October 14. Few more changes are expected in the schedule as the official announcement is likely to be made on July 31.

The highly anticipated India-Pakistan group clash in the upcoming ODI World Cup is set to be rescheduled to October 14, a day earlier than originally planned. Further adjustments to the World Cup schedule are anticipated, and the official announcement regarding these changes is expected to be made on July 31.

Last week, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said that a change in the schedule of the ODI World Cup was likely after three boards wrote to the ICC requesting a calendar adjustment. He also stated that just the dates and times of the matches would be altered in order to decrease the gap to 4-5 days. The names of the ICC full members who requested a timetable adjustment were not announced by the BCCI secretary.

“Three members have written to the ICC for a schedule change. Only the date and timings will be changed, venues will not be changed. If there is a six-day gap between games, we are trying to reduce it to 4-5 days. The picture will be clear in three-four days. Changes will happen in consultation with the ICC,” Shah said.

The decision to reschedule the India vs Pakistan clash in the 2023 ODI World Cup comes as the local police in Ahmedabad expressed concerns about ensuring adequate security on October 15, the same day as the commencement of the Hindu festival Navaratri. The magnitude of the match, combined with the festive atmosphere of the religious celebration, could potentially strain the authorities’ capacity to handle the event effectively.

The announcement of a possible schedule change caused concern among fans and stakeholders who had already made travel arrangements, including booking flights and hotels in Ahmedabad, in anticipation of witnessing much-awaited India vs Pakistan encounter. Historically, this match has been one of the most-watched sporting events worldwide, and fans from both nations eagerly await this intense showdown on the cricket field.
