Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealander Erin Routliffe beat former champions Laura Siegemund of Germany and Russia’s Vera Zvonareva 7-6(9) 6-3 to win the U.S. Open women’s doubles final on Sunday.

Dabrowski and Routliffe, who began their partnership just last month, saved eight of the nine break points they faced during a match that lasted two hours, 14 minutes.

It marked the first Grand Slam title for Routliffe, who previously represented Canada, and third for Dabrowski following the mixed doubles titles she won at the 2017 French Open and 2018 Australian Open.

“Thanks to Gabby for playing with me. She really took a chance on me and I really appreciate it and love her for it,” Routliffe said during their on-court interview. “And obviously I hope we can have many great results to come in the future.”

Siegemund and Zvonareva, who won the 2020 U.S. Open women’s doubles competition, failed to convert any of the five break point opportunities they had in a tightly-contested first set that required a drama-filled tiebreaker.

Germany won their first-ever FIBA Basketball World Cup title by beating undermanned Serbia 83-77 in a slugfest of the two European powerhouses on Sunday in Manila.

Germany leaned on a 22-10 surge in the third quarter, orchestrated by brothers Franz and Moritz Wagner, to build a cushion and win the World Cup’s first all-European final since 2006.

The tournament most valuable player Dennis Schroder carried Germany with a game-high 28 points, way above his average of 17.9 points per game, and added two rebounds and two assists.

“This is an unbelievable group… coach did a great job bringing us together,” Schroder told a press conference. “Our defence and how we play as a basketball team is just special.”

Germany, who won all eight tournament games, became the first team since 2006 to win a FIBA World Cup crown while debuting in the final.

Serbia absorbed another heartbreak after losing to the United States 129-92 in the 2014 final, but finished better than their quarter-final exit in 2019.

A hero’s welcome: Spain’s victorious Women’s World Cup side parade trophy through Madrid

Spain beat England 1-0 in a tight Women’s World Cup final in Australia on Sunday.

Spain began their reign as Women’s World Cup champions by arriving home to a hero’s welcome on the streets of Madrid.

Fans packed the streets of the Spanish capital on Monday night as the victorious La Roja paraded through with the trophy on an open-top bus.

The players later got off the bus and took to a stage, where match winner and captain – who scored the only goal in a narrow 1-0 win over England in Australia on Sunday – was tossed up in the air by teammates.

The side had earlier touched down at Barajas international airport, where star defender Ivana Andres lifted the trophy as she walked off the plane from Australia.

It is the first time Spain has won the competition since its inception in 1991.
