Canadian Jewish organizations and social media critics are slamming the Canadian Parliament for giving a man who fought for the Nazis a standing ovation during an event featuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the country.

“FSWC is appalled that Canada’s Parliament gave a standing ovation to a Ukrainian veteran who served in a Nazi military unit during the Second World War implicated in the mass murder of Jews and others. An apology and explanation is owed,” the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Canadian nonprofit dedicated to educating people on the Holocaust, wrote on X, previously known as Twitter.

Video and photos show the Canadian Parliament erupted into cheers on Friday during Zelenskyy’s visit to the country’s capital of Ottawa, when Canadian lawmakers also honored Yaroslav Hunka, a 98-year-old Ukrainian immigrant who fought for the First Ukrainian Division, according to the Toronto Star. That division was also known as the Waffen-SS Galicia Division, which fought for the Nazis as its paramilitary arm under the Schutzstaffel organization, according to the outlet.

“The fact that a veteran who served in a Nazi military unit was invited to and given a standing ovation in Parliament is shocking. At a time of rising antisemitism and Holocaust distortion, it is incredibly disturbing to see Canada’s Parliament rise to applaud an individual who was a member of a unit in the Waffen-SS, a Nazi military branch responsible for the murder of Jews and others and that was declared a criminal organization during the Nuremberg Trials,” the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center continued in their statement.

Social media commenters have joined the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center in condemning the Canadian House for celebrating Hunka, who some called a “literal Nazi” and “monster.”

Canadian columnist Joe Warmington called for a “full apology” “for celebrating a Second World War Nazi in the House of Commons,” in an op-ed published Sunday in the Toronto Sun.

Local Canadian outlets said the Associated Press identified the 98-year-old in a photo caption as a veteran of the “First Ukrainian Division in World War II,” and noted other outlets described the man as a Ukrainian immigrant to Canada who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians.

The Soviet Union played a pivotal role in defeating Nazi Germany, including during the Battle of Stalingrad, which marked a turning point in the war. The U.S. Department of State outlines on its website that “without the remarkable efforts of the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front, the United States and Great Britain would have been hard pressed to score a decisive military victory over Nazi Germany.”

Donald Trump reportedly disparaged disabled vet who was severely wounded in Afghanistan that sang ‘God Bless America’

Former President Donald Trump made disparaging comments about a wounded US Army veteran after he sang “God Bless America” during his presidency, according to a new report.

Trump allegedly made the nasty remarks at a welcome ceremony of Gen. Mark Milley at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in 2019, after Army captain Luis Avila, who was severely wounded in Afghanistan, sang “God Bless America,” The Atlantic reported.

“Why do you bring people like that here? No one wants to see that, the wounded,” Trump allegedly said to Milley in front of several witnesses as he walked over to congratulate Avila after the performance.

Avila, who was handpicked to perform by Milley, had completed five combat tours and lost a leg in an IED attack in Afghanistan, according to the Atlantic.

As a result of his injuries, he subsequently suffered two heart attacks, two strokes, and brain damage.

When Avila’s wheelchair almost tipped over due to the soft, wet ground, Milley’s wife, Hollyanne, ran over to help, as did then-Vice President Mike Pence.

Trump told Milley, who considered Avila and his wife, Claudia, to be symbols of American heroism and sacrifice, to never let the wounded vet appear in public again.

Trump reportedly made the vile comments at Milley’s 2019 welcome ceremony.

The general, who’d lost 242 soldiers under his command fighting in the Middle East, was deeply disturbed by the comments, the Atlantic reported.

“Milley’s family venerated the military, and Trump’s attitude toward the uniformed services seemed superficial, callous, and, at the deepest human level, repugnant,” The Atlantic report says.

Milley recently invited Avila to sing at his retirement ceremony, the outlet noted.

Trump has a history of making disparaging comments about US troops, including allegedly referring to the fallen soldiers at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France as “losers” and “suckers” after he balked at attending a memorial service in 2018, according to a report from the Atlantic at the time.

Kathy Griffin is accusing Kanye West of “controlling” his “wife” Bianca Censori, who, she speculates, “has no voice.”

In a lengthy TikTok posted Thursday, the comedian said that “while it’s easy to make fun of Kanye because he is crazy and nutty,” she believes he has gone too far when it comes to dressing his “wife.”

She then went on to call out a couple of specific outfits that Censori has worn in recent weeks — such as when she wore a pillow as a top and when she showed up to a fashion show in a thong bodysuit and fluffy headdress.

A Seattle police watchdog agency is investigating after a body-worn camera captured one Seattle Police Department union leader joking with another following the death of an Indian student, Jaahnavi Kandula, who was struck and killed by a police cruiser as she was crossing a street.

The 23-year-old Northeast University graduate, who was from Andhra Pradesh, was struck and killed in January this year by a Seattle cop, Kevin Dave, while driving 74 mph on the way to a report of an overdose call.

The investigation is related to a body-camera audio in which they laugh, joke about and downplay the death of the woman, suggesting her life had “limited value” and that the city should “just write a check.”

Officer Daniel Auderer, vice president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, accidentally left his body camera running as he called guild President Mike Solan to report what happened when another officer, Kevin Dave, struck and killed Kandula, The Seattle Times reported.

In a recording released by the police department Monday, Auderer laughs and suggests that Kandula’s life had “limited value” and the city should “just write a check.”

He laughs about the deadly crash and dismisses any implication the officer might be at fault or that a criminal investigation was necessary.

“I don’t think she was thrown 40 feet but she is dead”.

He was then heard laughing.

“No, it’s a regular person, just write a check,” responded Auderer.

He then burst into laughter again and said, “Eleven thousand dollars. She was 26 anyway, she had limited value”.

The recording, however, did not capture Solan’s remarks.

Auderer acknowledged his role in the investigation as an impairment recognition officer but said the conversation was “private” and meant to be part of his duties as a SPOG representative, according to what Jason Rantz, a conservative KTTH talk-show host, described as a self-reported complaint to Seattle’s Office of Police Accountability.

Isaacson reported in his book that Musk had abruptly turned off Ukraine’s access to his Starlink satellite internet system last year just as the country was launching an underwater drone attack on a Russian fleet in Crimea, depriving the Eastern European country’s forces of critical communications for the assault and rendering the offensive a failure.

“He secretly told his engineers to turn off coverage within 100 kilometers of the Crimean coast,” fearing the sneak attack would lead to a “mini-Pearl Harbor” scenario and nuclear war, Isaacson wrote in the book, according to an excerpt obtained and first reported by CNN. “As a result, when the Ukrainian drone subs got near the Russian fleet in Sevastopol, they lost connectivity and washed ashore harmlessly.”

That explosive claim, which set off alarms and triggered a tsunami of questions about Musk’s role as a key figure potentially determining the fate of Vladimir Putin’s ruthless war, turned out not to be quite as Isaacson had told it. Musk pushed back last week, writing on X that Starlink was never activated over Crimea and that he had actually received “an emergency request from government authorities” to enable the service, with the “obvious intent being to sink most of the Russian fleet at anchor.”

“If I had agreed to their request, then SpaceX would be explicitly complicit in a major act of war and conflict escalation,” Musk wrote.

Perhaps more importantly, Isaacson subsequently walked back the bombshell claim, which had received significant media coverage and was published as an “untold story” book excerpt in The Washington Post.

Spanish women’s football team coach Jorge Vilda sacked in wake of Rubiales kiss controversy

The head coach of the Spanish women’s football team has been sacked in the wake of the Rubiales kiss furore.

Jorge Vilda led Spain to World Cup victory last month when his side beat England 1-0 in the final.

But he faced criticism after he applauded a speech by Luis Rubiales when the Spanish football federation president refused to resign for kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips in the aftermath of the final.

Addressing Vilda directly on Friday, Mr Rubiales called him the best coach in women’s football and offered him a new four-year contract worth €500,000 (£429,000) a year.

By Saturday, Vilda had changed his tune, releasing a statement criticising Mr Rubiales – but he stopped short of calling for his resignation or dismissal.

The Spanish football federation said its acting president Pedro Rocha has “decided to dispense with the services of Jorge Vilda as sports director and women’s national coach, a position, the latter, which he accepted in 2015”.

The federation said it “appreciates his work at the head of the national team” as well as the successes achieved during his time.

Even before the World Cup final, Vilda’s leadership was called into question after 15 Spanish players refused to play for him.
They claimed that they had concerns about their health and emotional state. Only three of those players returned to the fold for the World Cup campaign.

Luis Rubiales: Under fire Spanish FA president again defends ‘mutual and consented’ World Cup final kiss

Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales has issued a fresh defence after kissing a player on the lips following the Women’s World Cup final.

Mr Rubiales’ statement comes as the Spanish football federation called for him to step down on Monday.

The 46-year-old has faced widespread criticism for kissing player Jennifer Hermoso on the lips during the awards ceremony after Spain’s 1-0 victory over England in the Women’s World Cup final on 20 August.

In his statement, he said: “I made some obvious mistakes, which I sincerely regret from the bottom of my heart.

“The spontaneity and happiness of the historic moment led us to carry out a mutual and consented act, the product of great enthusiasm.

“At no time was there any aggression, indeed, there was not even the slightest discomfort, but an overflowing joy in both.

“I repeat: with the consent of both parties, both in the affectionate hugs, as well as in the peak and subsequent farewell full of affectionate mutual gestures, that occurred on the medals delivery stage.

“I have also felt the growing support of people on the street and on social media.”

Earlier, the coach of the Spanish men’s national football team, Luis de la Fuente, apologised for applauding Mr Rubiales during the speech in which he refused to resign.

Mr Rubiales had claimed in the speech last Friday that he was the victim of a “social assassination”.

The men’s coach was sitting in the front row during Mr Rubiales’ speech and clapped when he attacked “false feminism”.

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle asked to use Air Force One after Queen’s funeral — but got denied

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tried to hitch a ride back to America on Air Force One after the Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral but were quickly rebuffed.

Sources told the Daily Mail Wednesday that it was an immediate no from the White House, adding that the request was a “non-starter.”

“It would have caused such a commotion. It would have strained relations with the Palace and the new King,” another source added, referring to King Charles III.

The White House and a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not reply for comment.

The Bidens had used the presidential aircraft to attend the late Queen’s funeral and were also in attendance at a reception for world leaders and foreign royals thrown by King Charles ahead of the service on Sept. 19, 2022.
