Speaker McCarthy ousted in historic House vote, as scramble begins for a Republican leader

Speaker Kevin McCarthy was voted out of the job Tuesday in an extraordinary showdown — a first in U.S. history, forced by a contingent of hard-right conservatives and throwing the House and its Republican leadership into chaos.

It’s the end of the political line for McCarthy, who has said repeatedly that he never gives up, but found himself with almost no options remaining. Neither the right-flank Republicans who engineered his ouster nor the Democrats who piled on seem open to negotiating.

McCarthy told lawmakers in the evening he would not run again for speaker, putting the gavel up for grabs. Next steps are highly uncertain with no obvious successor to lead the House Republican majority. Action is halted in the House until next week, when Republicans try to elect a new speaker.

“I may have lost this vote today, but as I walk out of this chamber I feel fortunate to have served,” McCarthy said at a press conference at the Capitol, alternating between upbeat assessment of his speakership and angry score-settling of those who ousted him.

Still, he said, “I wouldn’t change a thing.”

McCarthy’s chief rival, Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, orchestrated the rare vote on the obscure “motion to vacate,” and pushed ahead swiftly into a dramatic afternoon roll call.

While McCarthy enjoyed support from most Republicans in his slim majority, eight Republican detractors — many of the same hard-right holdouts who tried to stop him from becoming speaker in January — essentially forced him out.

Stillness fell as the presiding officer gaveled the vote closed, 216-210, saying the office of the speaker “is hereby declared vacant.”

Moments later, a top McCarthy ally, Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., took the gavel and, according to House rules, was named speaker pro tempore, to serve in the office until a new speaker is chosen.

The House then briskly recessed as lawmakers met privately to discuss the path forward.

It was a stunning moment for McCarthy, a punishment fueled by growing grievances but sparked by his weekend decision to work with Democrats to keep the federal government open rather than risk a shutdown.

But in many ways, McCarthy’s ouster was set in motion when, in deal-making with hard-right holdouts at the start of the year, he agreed to a series of demands — including a rules change that allowed any single lawmaker to file the motion to vacate.

As the House fell silent, Gaetz, a top ally of Donald Trump, rose to offer his motion.

Leaders tried to turn it back, but the vote was 218-208, with 11 Republicans against tabling the motion, a sign of trouble to come.

The House then opened a floor debate unseen in modern times, and Republicans argued publicly among themselves for more than an hour.

“It’s a sad day,” Republican Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma said as debate got underway, urging his colleagues not to plunge the House Republican majority “into chaos.”

But Gaetz shot back during the debate, “Chaos is Speaker McCarthy.”

As the fiery debate dragged on, many of the complaints against the speaker revolved around his truthfulness and his ability to keep the promises he has made.

Almost alone, Gaetz led his side of the floor debate, criticizing the debt deal McCarthy made with President Joe Biden and the vote to prevent a government shutdown, which conservatives opposed as they demanded steeper spending cuts.

But a long line of McCarthy supporters stood up for him, including Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, a leader of the conservative Freedom Caucus, who said, “He has kept his word.” Rep. Garret Graves, R-La., waved his cellphone, saying it was “disgusting” that hard-right colleagues were fundraising off the move in text messages seeking donations.

McCarthy, of California, insisted he would not cut a deal with Democrats to remain in power — not that he could have relied on their help even if he had asked.

Trump Campaign Sends a Birdcage to Nikki Haley’s Hotel After Trump Called Her a ‘Birdbrain’

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley said that Donald Trump’s campaign sent her a mocking gift to follow up on the former president’s insulting new nickname for her — and while some accused her of a hoax, the Trump campaign owned up to the stunt in a text to a reporter.

On Sunday, Haley posted a photo on X — the social media platform formerly known as Twitter — showing a birdcage and some birdseed that she said was left outside of her hotel room by the Trump campaign. This was obviously a reference to how Trump insulted her as a “birdbrain” — following her second consecutive debate in which many pundits declared her the winner.

“After a day of campaigning, this is the message waiting for me outside my hotel room,” Haley tweeted, adding the hashtags #PrettyPatheticTryAgain and #YouJustMadeMyCaseForMe.

After Haley posted this tweet, conservative commentators like Matt Walsh and other pro-Trump accounts cast doubt on her claim — suggesting she was setting up a hoax reminiscent of Jussie Smollett.

The Congress on Sunday appointed its senior leader Ajay Maken as the new treasurer, replacing Pawan Kumar Bansal, who was appointed as interim treasurer after the demise of Ahmed Patel.

“Congress president has appointed Ajay Maken as the treasurer of the All India Congress Committee, with immediate effect,” party general secretary KC Venugopal said in a statement.

“The party appreciates the contribution of the outgoing treasurer Pawan Kumar Bansal,” the statement further said.

Taking to microblogging website X (formerly Twitter), Maken said, “I am currently in Raipur attending the screening committee meeting. I have been informed of my appointment as the treasurer of Congress.”

“This is indeed a significant responsibility,” he added.

He further extended his gratitude to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and KC Vengugopal for “for placing their trust” in him.

“I assure both my leaders and the workers of our party that as a custodian of their contributions, I will work with the utmost diligence, honesty, and dedication,” Maken added.

Biden vows to stand by Ukraine, despite budget fiasco

President Joe Biden has vowed continued US support for Ukraine, after further military funding was excluded from a last-minute congressional budget deal.

The temporary measure, pushed through to avert a government shutdown, did not include $6bn (£4.92bn) in military aid for Kyiv – a top White House priority.

Hardline Republicans oppose further military aid, with many openly opposing Mr Biden’s approach to the war.

But on Sunday Mr Biden said Ukraine could “count on” US support.

“We cannot, under any circumstances, allow US support to Ukraine to be interrupted,” Mr Biden said.

“I can reassure [Ukraine] we’ll get there, that we’re going to get it done,” he said on restoring funding for the war. “I want to assure our American allies… that you can count on our support, we will not walk away.”

The US has already supplied some $46bn (£37bn) in military aid to Ukraine since Russian launched its full scale invasion in February 2022.

President Biden has requested another $24bn (£19bn).

And in recent months the US has sent state of the art equipment to Kyiv – including long-range missiles and Abrams tanks. It comes as Kyiv’s forces continue to launch a slow moving counter-offensive in the south of the country.

But Saturday’s temporary budget agreement – which will fund the US federal government for 45 days – stripped out continued military funding for the time being.

Senior Senate leaders from both parties released a joint statement signalling their intention to “ensure the US government continues to provide” support to Ukraine in the coming weeks.

But the move – which came just nine days after President Volodymyr Zelensky flew to Washington to plead for further support – reflects increasing opposition from hard-right Republicans in the House of Representatives to the war in recent months.

Republicans control the House of Representatives, with Democrats enjoying a wafer-thin majority in the Senate. Both need to approve legislation on the budget before it is signed into law.

Florida congressman Matt Gaetz told reporters on Saturday that funding “already authorised out of this Congress is somewhere between more than enough and way too much”.

And Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor-Green said far too much aid had already been allocated to Kyiv, saying “Ukraine is not the 51st state”.

Their approach provoked a furious reaction from Democratic Party senators.

“I can’t believe people are going to walk away from Ukraine at this moment in time,” Senator Mark Warner said.

Despite the row, officials in Kyiv have sought to frame this new 45-day funding agreement in the US as an “opportunity” for its diplomats to secure longer-term support. It’s more like an unwanted deadline.

Ukraine’s foreign ministry says the “flow of US aid won’t change” with $3bn of humanitarian and military support set to still arrive, but it concedes “ongoing programmes” might be affected.

But one Ukrainian MP, Oleksi Goncharenko, admitted that the suspended funding was causing concern in Kyiv.

“The vote in US Congress is disturbing. The US said they would be with Ukraine as long as it takes and now see how support of Ukraine is excluded from the stop-gap deal. This is the sign of alarm, not only for Ukraine, but for Europe, too,” he told the BBC.

Ukraine says it will fight on, even though there is concern about Western fatigue with the war

This political turmoil is one of several symptoms of Western fatigue. The growing scepticism from some Republicans and the recent election victory for a populist, pro-Moscow party in Slovakia are concerning for both Ukraine and the European Union.

Danish Ali-Ramesh Bidhuri row: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla refers complaints matter to Privileges Committee

Earlier, multiply opposition MPs, including Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and DMK’s Kanimozhi, have sought action against Bidhuri for his objectionable words against BSP’s Danish Ali.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on 28 September referred MPs’ complaints on the issue involving BJP member Ramesh Bidhuri’s use of objectionable words against BSP’s Danish Ali to the Privileges Committee, news agency PTI quoted officials as saying.

Earlier, multiple opposition MPs, including Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and DMK’s Kanimozhi, have sought action against Bidhuri for his objectionable words against BSP’s Danish Ali.

However, BJP parliamentarian Nishikant Dubey said the BSP member “incited” the South Delhi MP as was speaking in the House. Dubey also claimed he urged the Speaker to look into this aspect as well.

As per details, Birla has sent all these complaints to the Privileges Committee headed by BJP MP Sunil Kumar Singh.

Following this development, Dubey took to X and thanked the Speaker for referring the matter to the committee.

Citing several previous incidents to assert that no committee was formed to probe these issues and nor was anyone punished, Dubey wrote, “It was possible because the BJP has a majority in Lok Sabha.”

Donald Trump reportedly disparaged disabled vet who was severely wounded in Afghanistan that sang ‘God Bless America’

Former President Donald Trump made disparaging comments about a wounded US Army veteran after he sang “God Bless America” during his presidency, according to a new report.

Trump allegedly made the nasty remarks at a welcome ceremony of Gen. Mark Milley at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in 2019, after Army captain Luis Avila, who was severely wounded in Afghanistan, sang “God Bless America,” The Atlantic reported.

“Why do you bring people like that here? No one wants to see that, the wounded,” Trump allegedly said to Milley in front of several witnesses as he walked over to congratulate Avila after the performance.

Avila, who was handpicked to perform by Milley, had completed five combat tours and lost a leg in an IED attack in Afghanistan, according to the Atlantic.

As a result of his injuries, he subsequently suffered two heart attacks, two strokes, and brain damage.

When Avila’s wheelchair almost tipped over due to the soft, wet ground, Milley’s wife, Hollyanne, ran over to help, as did then-Vice President Mike Pence.

Video of the ceremony shows Trump greeting Avila afterward.

Trump told Milley, who considered Avila and his wife, Claudia, to be symbols of American heroism and sacrifice, to never let the wounded vet appear in public again.

Trump reportedly made the vile comments at Milley’s 2019 welcome ceremony.

The general, who’d lost 242 soldiers under his command fighting in the Middle East, was deeply disturbed by the comments, the Atlantic reported.

“Milley’s family venerated the military, and Trump’s attitude toward the uniformed services seemed superficial, callous, and, at the deepest human level, repugnant,” The Atlantic report says.

Milley recently invited Avila to sing at his retirement ceremony, the outlet noted.

Trump has a history of making disparaging comments about US troops, including allegedly referring to the fallen soldiers at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France as “losers” and “suckers” after he balked at attending a memorial service in 2018, according to a report from the Atlantic at the time.

Women’s reservation bill introduced, PM says September 19 ‘historic day’

Women’s Reservation Bill that seeks to provide 33 per cent quota for women in Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies has been introduced in the Lok Sabha.

The Women’s Reservation Bill that seeks to provide 33 per cent quota for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies was introduced in the Lok Sabha today in the ongoing special session of Parliament. Calling September 19 a “historic day”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the Opposition to unanimously pass the Bill – ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ – that has been hanging for nearly three decades.

“On this historic occasion in the new Parliament building, as the first proceeding of the House, the beginning of all the Parliamentarians opening gateways for women power is being done with this crucial decision,” Prime Minister Modi said in Lok Sabha.

PM Modi announced that his government is “bringing an important constitutional amendment bill”, taking forward “our resolve of women-led development”

“Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ will further empower our democracy,” said PM Modi. “There have been many debates in the past regarding women’s reservation… and I appeal to lawmakers to support the bill,” the Prime Minister said.

“We want more and more women to join the development process of the country,” he added, before Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal presented the bill to lawmakers.

Women account for almost half of the country’s 950 million registered voters but make for only 15% of parliament and about 10% of state legislatures.

The bill, once approved, will see the number of women MPs in Lok Sabha go up to 181 from the current 82, Meghwal said.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury credited his party for the women’s quota bill. “Former Congress governments under Rajiv Gandhi, PV Narasimha Rao, and Manmohan Singh had consistently tried to pass the bill to provide reservation for women,” he said.

Chowdhury also claimed that the Women’s Reservation Bill, which was passed in the Rajya Sabha during the Congress regime under Manmohan Singh, was still pending.

However, Union Home Minister Amit Shah countered the claim by stating that the bill had already lapsed.

Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu, who has not been seen in public for over two weeks, has been placed under investigation, the US government believes.

According to the US, Shangfu has also been stripped of his responsibilities as defence minister, the Financial Times reported.

Taking to X, Rahm Emanuel, the US envoy to Japan, wrote, “President Xi’s cabinet lineup is now resembling Agatha Christie’s novel ‘And Then There Were None’.”

“First, foreign minister Qin Gang goes missing, then the rocket force commanders go missing and now defence minister Li Shangfu hasn’t been seen in public for two weeks,” he wrote.

“Who’s going to win this unemployment race? China’s youth or Xi’s cabinet?” Emanuel said.

He further quoted Shakespeare in Hamlet and wrote, “Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.” 1st: Defense Minister Li Shangfu hasn’t been seen or heard from in 3 weeks. 2nd: He was a no-show for his trip to Vietnam. Now: He’s absent from his scheduled meeting with the Singaporean Chief of Navy because he was placed on house arrest???…Might be getting crowded in there. Good news is I heard he’s paid off his mortgage with the Country Garden real estate developers.”

Shangfu’s supposed disappearance came after Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang went missing in July.

Zimbabwe’s President Mnangagwa wins second term, opposition rejects result

Elections commission says Mnangagwa won 52.6 percent of the vote compared with 44 percent for challenger Nelson Chamisa.

Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has won a second and final term in office in an outcome rejected by the opposition and questioned by observers.

Mnangagwa, who took over from longtime leader Robert Mugabe after a 2017 army coup, was widely expected to secure re-election despite the country’s continuing economic crisis, with analysts saying the contest was heavily skewed in favour of the ZANU-PF party, which has ruled the country since independence and the end of white minority rule in 1980.

Mnangagwa won 52.6 percent of the vote compared with 44 percent for Nelson Chamisa, his main challenger, according to official results announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) late on Saturday.

“Mnangagwa Emmerson Dambudzo of ZANU-PF party is declared duly elected president of the Republic of Zimbabwe,” ZEC chairwoman Justice Chigumba told journalists.

The elections were marred by delays that fuelled opposition accusations of rigging and voter suppression but a small group of ruling party supporters celebrated the outcome on Saturday.

But Promise Mkwananzi, a spokesman for the Chamisa’s Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) said the party had not signed the final tally, which he described as “false”.

“We cannot accept the results,” he told the AFP news agency, adding the party would soon announce its next move.

The vote was being watched across southern Africa as a test of support for Mnangagwa’s ZANU-PF, whose 43-year rule has been battered by its disastrous management of the economy and charges of authoritarianism.

Foreign poll monitors said on Friday that the elections had failed to meet regional and international standards.

The head of the European Union’s observer mission on Friday said the vote took place in a “climate of fear”. Southern African regional bloc SADC’s mission noted issues including voting delays, issues with the voter roll, bans on opposition rallies and biased state media coverage.

Trump raised $7.1 million since he was booked at Atlanta jail

Aug 26 (Reuters) – Former President Donald Trump has raised nearly $20 million in the past three weeks, a period that roughly coincides with his indictment in federal and state cases connected to his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him, Trump’s campaign spokesman said on Saturday.

Since appearing Thursday to have his mug shot taken in a racketeering and fraud case in Atlanta, Georgia, the former president brought in $7.1 million, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

On Friday alone, Trump brought in $4.18 million, making it the highest-grossing day of his campaign so far, Cheung said.

His mug shot, posted by a Georgia courthouse on Thursday evening, has been turned into T-shirts, shot glasses, mugs, posters and even bobblehead dolls by friends and foes alike.

The shot of Trump with a red tie, glistening hair, and an icy scowl was taken as the Republican presidential front-runner was arrested on more than a dozen felony charges, part of a criminal case stemming from his attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

Trump, who was elected president in 2016 but defeated by Democrat Joe Biden in 2020, is again seeking the Republican Party’s nomination for president.

Trump is currently facing four indictments, including two related to his false claims that the election was stolen and the Jan. 6, 2021 attack by his followers on the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

He has denied all charges.

On Aug. 15, Trump was indicted by a Georgia grand jury after an investigation by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis into his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Biden in the state.

Amid indictment, Trump says he’d ‘leave US to share gold domed suite with Putin’

Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform joked about leaving the US to live with Putin in a “gold domed suite” after his bond was set at $200,000 following his indictment for alleged election interference in Georgia.

Donald Trump sparked a row on Monday after he said he would leave the United States and go live in a ‘gold-domed suite’ with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The former US President’s statement came after his bond was set at $200,000 following his indictment for allegedly scheming to overturn his 2020 election loss in Georgia.

“The failed District Attorney of Fulton County (Atlanta), Fani Willis, insisted on a $200,000 Bond from me. I assume, therefore, that she thought I was a “flight” risk – I’d fly far away, maybe to Russia, Russia, Russia, share a gold domed suite with Vladimir, never to be seen or heard from again,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

“Would I be able to take my very “understated” airplane with the gold TRUMP affixed for all to see. Probably not, I’d be much better off flying commercial – I’m sure nobody would recognize me!”, he added.

Though Trump’s post was understood as a joke, witnesses or victims in the case assumed he was trying to provoke the court to see how much he could get away with, the Huffington Post reported.

Mamata’s Rakesh Roshan gaffe in viral video after Chandrayaan 3 landing: ‘Indira Gandhi asked…’

Mamata Banerjee said Indira Gandhi asked ‘Rakesh Roshan’ how India looked from space. The clip went viral after Chandrayaan 3’s successful landing.

West Bengal chief minister and a key opposition leader Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said when ‘Rakesh Roshan reached the moon’, Indira Gandhi asked him how India looked from there. Banerjee said this at an event after Isro’s Chandrayaan 3 successfully soft landed on the south pole of the moon on Wednesday. The clip went viral as Mamata Banerjee confused astronaut Rakesh Sharma with Bollywood personality Rakesh Roshan, father of Hrithik Roshan. Also, Rakesh Sharma did not go to the moon. His conversation with Indira Gandhi was from space. “Sare jahan see accha,” Rakesh Sharma said replying to Indira Gandhi’s question, “Upar se Bharat kaisa dikhta hai aapko (How does India look like from space?).”

“I remember when they reached the moon, Indira Gandhi asked Rakesh Roshan how India looked from there, for space,” Mamata Banerjee said. The clip went viral adding to the list of public displays of ignorance by political leaders on the question of India’s prestigious and successful moon mission. For example, Rajasthan sports minister Ashok Chandna congratulated the ‘passengers’ who were on Chandrayaan 3 after its successful soft landing. Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar was asked on Chandrayaan 3 before the soft landing. He apparently did not understand the question and asked the minister who was with him.

New Thai PM Srettha takes office with royal endorsement

The former property mogul was confirmed by parliamentary vote on Tuesday, just hours after Thaksin Shinawatra returned to Thailand from 15 years of exile and was immediately jailed on old graft cases.

Thailand’s new prime minister took office on Wednesday (Aug 23) with the endorsement of the king, heading a controversial coalition including pro-military parties linked to former coup-makers.

The appointment of former property mogul Srettha Thavisin – of the Pheu Thai Party long associated with billionaire former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra – ends months of political deadlock following May’s general election.

He was confirmed by parliamentary vote on Tuesday, just hours after Thaksin returned to the kingdom from 15 years of exile and was immediately jailed on old graft cases.

Srettha received King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s written command to form a government in a ceremony at Pheu Thai headquarters at 6pm local time (11am GMT), and is likely to announce his Cabinet in the coming days.

In a national televised address after his endorsement, Srettha pledged to bring unity to the country and promote policies that would solve crises and move the country forward.

He also pledged to promote inclusiveness and govern for the benefit of all Thais, promising a new era of change.

Outgoing prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha – a former army chief who overthrew the last Pheu Thai government in a coup – congratulated Srettha and wished him luck.

Prayut suffered a heavy defeat in May’s polls as the upstart progressive Move Forward Party (MFP) rode a wave of youth and urban discontent with nearly a decade of military-backed rule to win the most seats.

But MFP’s push to reform royal insult laws and take on powerful vested business interests spooked the kingdom’s elite and saw leader Pita Limjaroenrat blocked from becoming prime minister.

This opened the way for election runners-up Pheu Thai to build a coalition that includes Prayut’s party and another linked to the generals who ousted Thaksin in 2006 and his sister Yingluck in 2014.

DEAL RUMOURS

The last two decades of Thai politics have been coloured by the bitter tussle between pro-Thaksin parties and the kingdom’s powerful pro-military and royalist establishment.

Thaksin was jailed for eight years on Tuesday, but the timing of his return, combined with Pheu Thai’s decision to share power with pro-military parties, has led many to speculate that a backroom deal has been struck to grant him leniency – though the party denies it.

The former Manchester City owner, 74, was moved from a prison quarantine facility to a police hospital on Wednesday.

Thai media reported that he had been installed in a private VIP suite on the 14th floor of the Police General Hospital, which overlooks an exclusive private members’ golf course in downtown Bangkok.

Officials said that he was suffering from multiple health problems, including heart trouble, and needed monitoring in hospital.

Giuliani turns himself in on Georgia 2020 election charges after bond is set at $150,000

Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump’s lawyer and confidant, turned himself in at a jail in Atlanta on Wednesday on charges related to efforts to overturn then-President Trump’s loss in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.

The former New York mayor, was indicted last week along with Trump and 17 others. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said they participated in a wide-ranging conspiracy to subvert the will of the voters after the Republican president lost to Democrat Joe Biden in November 2020.

Bond for Giuliani, who was released after booking like the other defendants, was set at $150,000, second only to Trump’s $200,000.

Giuliani, 79, is accused of spearheading Trump’s efforts to compel state lawmakers in Georgia and other closely contested states to ignore the will of voters and illegally appoint electoral college electors favorable to Trump.

Other high-profile defendants also surrendered Wednesday, including Jenna Ellis, an attorney who prosecutors say was involved in efforts to convince state lawmakers to unlawfully appoint presidential electors, and lawyer Sidney Powell, accused of making false statements about the election in Georgia and helping to organize a breach of voting equipment in rural Coffee County.

Georgia was one of several key states Trump lost by slim margins, prompting the Republican and his allies to proclaim, without evidence, that the election was rigged in favor of his Democratic rival Biden.

Giuliani is charged with making false statements and soliciting false testimony, conspiring to create phony paperwork and asking state lawmakers to violate their oath of office to appoint an alternate slate of pro-Trump electors.

Outside the Fulton County Jail Wednesday afternoon, Giuliani laughed when asked if he regretted allying himself with Trump.

“I am very, very honored to be involved in this case because this case is a fight for our way of life,” Giuliani told reporters. “This indictment is a travesty. It’s an attack on — not just me, not just President Trump, not just the people in this indictment, some of whom I don’t even know – this is an attack on the American people.”

After Giuliani’s surrender, Trump repeated his unfounded claims that the election was rigged and stolen and wrote on his social media site, “The greatest Mayor in the history of New York City was just ARRESTED in Atlanta, Georgia, because he fought for Election Integrity.”

Trump, the early front-runner in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, has said he plans to turn himself in at the Fulton County Jail on Thursday. He and his allies have characterized the investigation as politically motivated and have heavily criticized District Attorney Willis, a Democrat.

Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark are both trying to have the case against them heard in federal court rather than in Fulton County Superior Court. Both argue the actions that gave rise to the charges in the indictment were related to their work as federal officials and that the case should be moved to federal court and the charges against them dismissed.

They had each asked a judge to allow them to avoid being arrested while those requests are pending. But U.S. District Judge Steve Jones on Wednesday rejected their requests to avoid having to be booked in jail while they fight to move the case to federal court.

Willis has set a deadline of noon on Friday for the people indicted last week in the election subversion case to turn themselves in. Her team has been negotiating bond amounts and conditions with the lawyers for the defendants before they surrender at the jail.

Misty Hampton, who was the Coffee County elections director when a breach of election equipment happened there, had her bond set at $10,000. David Shafer, who’s a former Georgia Republican Party chair and served as one of 16 fake electors for Trump, and Cathy Latham, who’s accused in the Coffee County breach and was also a fake elector, turned themselves in Wednesday morning. Also surrendering Wednesday were lawyers Ray Smith and Kenneth Chesebro, who prosecutors said helped organize the fake electors meeting at the state Capitol in December 2020.

Donald Trump says he will surrender to authorities over Georgia charges

Donald Trump has said he will surrender himself to authorities in Georgia on Thursday, as he awaits trial on charges of trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat in the US state.

“Can you believe it? I’ll be going to Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday to be ARRESTED,” the former US president wrote on his social media network Truth Social on Monday, hours after his bond was set at $200,000 (£157,000).

Trump was ordered not to send threatening social media messages to co-defendants, witnesses or victims, according to the bond agreement signed by Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis, Trump’s defence lawyers and the judge. It explicitly includes “posts on social media or reposts of posts” made by others.

He was also prohibited from communicating in any way about the facts of the case with any co-defendant or witness, except through lawyers.

Trump was indicted in the Georgia case last week along with 18 co-defendants, the fourth set of charges against him since April, when he became the first former president in US history to face indictment.

His appearances in New York, Florida and Washington DC have been box office media events. The former president has denied any wrongdoing.

Trump has repeatedly used social media to attack those involved in the criminal cases against him as he campaigns to reclaim the White House in 2024.

He has railed against Ms Willis since before he was indicted, and singled out Florida’s governor, Brian Kemp – a Republican who rebuffed his efforts to overturn the election – by name in a social media post on Monday morning.

Ms Willis set a deadline of noon on Friday for Trump and his 18 co-defendants to turn themselves in at the Fulton County Jail to be booked or face arrest.

Trial could take place during presidential nominating season

The prosecutor has proposed arraignments for the defendants during the week of 5 September and has said she wants to try the defendants collectively and bring the case to trial in March, which would put it during the presidential nominating season.

Prosecutors have proposed the trial start on 4 March 2024, while Trump’s lawyers have asked for it to take place in 2026.

Mr Trump’s appearance in Georgia will come a day after the first Republican primary debate, which he has decided to skip.

He is expected to turn himself in at Fulton County Jail, where the Department of Justice opened a civil rights investigation into conditions last month, citing filthy cells, violence and the death last year of a man whose body was found covered in insects in the main jail’s psychiatric wing. Three people have died in Fulton County custody in the past month.

The incident happened around 12.30pm when Maurya arrived at the venue. The crowd, comprising Maurya’s supporters and SP workers, caught the attacker and manhandled him though the shoe did not hit the leader.

Police personnel present at the site rescued the attacker, identified as Akash Saini, and took him into custody.

Maurya had organised the conclave to highlight the work of eminent personalities from the backward classes of society. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav was the chief guest.

Monday’s incident comes a day after black ink was thrown at BJP’s OBC candidate for the Ghosi assembly bypolls, Dara Singh Chauhan, on Sunday during campaigning.

Pakistan President denies signing controversial bills, begins political slugfest: What is happening?

President Arif Alvi denied approving changes to the Official Secrets Act and the Pakistan Army Act, claiming that he was undermined by his own staff. The law ministry, however, asked him to “take responsibility for his own actions”.

“As God is my witness, I did not sign Official Secrets Amendment Bill 2023 & Pakistan Army Amendment Bill 2023 as I disagreed with these laws,” Pakistan President Arif Alvi posted on X Sunday (August 20).

With these words, Alvi triggered one of the most absurd political controversies of all time in Pakistan.

The bills he was referring to, were approved by the Pakistan National Assembly and the Senate a few weeks ago and sent for presidential assent. Alvi was deemed to have given his assent to both of them – the Official Secrets (Amendment) Bill, 2023 with effect from August 17 and the Pakistan Army (Amendment) Bill, 2023 from August 11. But their legal status is now up in the air, in light of the President’s latest comments.

Trump says he will surrender Thursday on Georgia charges tied to efforts to overturn 2020 election

Former President Donald Trump says he will surrender to authorities in Georgia on Thursday to face charges in the case accusing him of illegally scheming to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state.

“Can you believe it? I’ll be going to Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday to be ARRESTED,” Trump wrote on his social media network Monday night, hours after his bond was set at $200,000.

It will be Trump’s fourth arrest since April, when he became the first former president in U.S. history to face indictment. Since then, Trump, who remains the leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, has had what has seemed like an endless procession of bookings and arraignments in jurisdictions across the country. His appearances in New York, Florida and Washington, D.C., have drawn enormous media attention, with news helicopters tracking his every move.

Trump’s announcement came hours after his attorneys met with prosecutors in Atlanta to discuss the details of his release on bond. The former president is barred from intimidating co-defendants, witnesses or victims in the case — including on social media — according to the bond agreement signed by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, Trump’s defense attorneys and the judge. It explicitly includes “posts on social media or reposts of posts” made by others.

Trump has repeatedly used social media to attack people involved in the criminal cases against him as he campaigns to reclaim the White House in 2024. He has been railing against Willis since before he was indicted, and singled out Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp — a Republican who rebuffed his efforts to overturn the election — by name in a social media post Monday morning.

The agreement also prohibits the former president from making any “direct or indirect threat of any nature” against witnesses or co-defendants, and from communicating in any way about the facts of the case with them, except through attorneys.

The order sets Trump’s bond for the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations — or RICO — charge at $80,000, and adds $10,000 for each of the 12 other counts he is facing. Bond is the amount defendants must pay as a form of collateral to ensure they show up for required court appearances.

Willis set a deadline of noon Friday for Trump and his 18 co-defendants to turn themselves in to be booked. The prosecutor has proposed that arraignments for the defendants follow during the week of Sept. 5. She has said she wants to try the defendants collectively and bring the case to trial in March of next year, which would put it in the heat of the presidential nominating season.

A Trump spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the filing. A phone message seeking comment was also left for an attorney for the former president.

Trump’s appearance in Georgia will come a day after the first Republican primary debate, which he has decided to skip.

He is expected to turn himself in at the Fulton County jail, which has long been plagued with problems. The Department of Justice last month opened a civil rights investigation into conditions, citing filthy cells, violence and the death last year of a man whose body was found covered in insects in the main jail’s psychiatric wing. Three people have died in Fulton County custody in the past month.

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Monday afternoon that when Trump surrenders there will be a “hard lockdown” of the area surrounding the jail.
