Elon Musk accuses Justin Trudeau of ‘crushing free speech’ in Canada. Here’s why

SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk slammed the Justin Trudeau government in Canada for “crushing free speech” in the country.

His remark came in wake of a recent order of the Canada government which makes it compulsory for online streaming services to formally register with the government for ‘regulatory controls’.

Musk was responding to a post by journalist and author Glenn Greenwald who was commenting on the ruling.

“The Canadian government, armed with one of the world’s most repressive online censorship schemes, announces that all “online streaming services that offer podcasts” must formally register with the government to permit regulatory controls,” Greenwald posted on X (formerly Twitter)

Responding to this, Elon Musk stated, “Trudeau is trying to crush free speech in Canada. Shameful”.

Notably, this is not the first time the Trudeau government is being accused of acting against free speech.

In February 2022, Trudeau invoked emergency powers — for the first time in country’s history — to arm his government with more power to respond to the trucker protests, who were opposing the vaccine mandates at that time.

Meanwhile, Canadian PM created an uproar after he alleged India’s role in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

However, India has outrightly rejected the claims, calling it ‘absurd’ and ‘motivated’.

Notably, Canada has yet to provide any public evidence to support the claim about the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

My father exposed drunk face of Bhagwant Mann and his party: Sukhpal Khaira’s son

Mehtab Singh; and Sukhpal Khaira

After the detention of Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira, his son Mehtab Singh on Thursday alleged that this is what happens when somebody speaks against the government.

In an early morning raid on Thursday, a team of Punjab Police reached Khaira’s residence in connection with an old case registered in 2015 under the NDPS Act in Jalalabad, Fazilka.

“Sukhpal Singh exposed the drunk face of Bhagwant Mann and his party. He always stood by the families of those who died of a drug overdose in Punjab…This is what happens when somebody speaks against the government. This is the second arrest of my father in five years. This is the after-effect of speaking the truth,” Mehtab Singh said.

“In 2015, an FIR was used for this arrest. On that FIR, the court summoned us and we challenged that order in the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court quashed that order,” he added.

He said law is equal for everyone, so the family will follow all the procedure. “The law is equal for everyone. We will seek regular bail and then move high court. We will fight. If they think filing the case will scare us, they are wrong as they don’t know Sukhpal Khaira,” he said.

Mehtab Singh also met Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who assured the family that the Congress stood firmly with Sukhpal Khaira.

INDIA has hidden agenda to end Sanatana Dharma: PM Modi on Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remark

Unleashing a no-holds-barred attack on the Opposition front — the Indian National Developmental, Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) – after Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remark on ‘Sanatana Dharma’, PM Narendra Modi said the alliance has a hidden agenda of attacking India’s culture and end Sanatana Dharma

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday elaborately spoke about the controversy surrounding the Sanatana Dharma remark made by Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. Addressing a massive gathering at Bina in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, PM Modi said that the INDIA alliance has a “hidden agenda” to attack and end the Sanatana Dharma culture.

Unleashing a no holds barred attack on the Opposition bloc — the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) — PM Narendra Modi called it an “INDI alliance” that “does not have a leader”.

“At a time when Bharat is emerging as a world leader at global forums, some parties are trying to divide the country and its people. These people came together to form an ‘INDI’ alliance. Some people are calling it a ‘ghamndiya (arrogant) alliance’. They don’t have a leader yet and there is a lot of suspense on who would lead them going into the Lok Sabha elections next year. They are working with a hidden agenda, which is to attack India’s culture,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi also alleged that in its third meeting, the Opposition bloc adopted a resolution to “end the Sanatana culture” in the country.

The prime minister said, “This INDI-Alliance adopted a resolution to end our ‘Sanatana’ culture. They are bent on destroying the ideologies, cultures and traditions that have kept the country and our people together for centuries.”

PM Modi’s attack on the Opposition came a few days after CM MK Stalin’s son, Udhayanidhi Stalin, said that Sanatana Dharma is incompatible with the concept of social justice and should be “eliminated.” “Sanatana is like malaria and dengue and so it must be eradicated and not opposed,” Udhayanidhi Stalin said.

Lula says Putin will not be arrested at Brazil G20 meeting

Brazilian president says Russian leader will be invited to the G20 meeting in Rio de Janeiro next year.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has said that Russian leader Vladimir Putin will not be arrested in Brazil if he attends the Group of 20 meeting in Rio de Janeiro next year.

Lula, speaking to the Firstpost news show at the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Delhi on Saturday, said Putin would be invited to next year’s event.

He added that he himself planned to attend a BRICS bloc of developing nations meeting due in Russia before the Rio meeting.

“I believe that Putin can go easily to Brazil,” Lula said. “What I can say to you is that if I’m president of Brazil, and he comes to Brazil, there’s no way he will be arrested.”

The statement comes after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against Putin in March, accusing him of the war crime of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine.

Russia has denied its forces have engaged in war crimes or forcibly taken Ukrainian children.

Putin has repeatedly skipped international gatherings and was not present at the G20 get-together in Delhi, sending Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Brazil is a signatory to the Rome Statute which led to the founding of the ICC.

Lula’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

On Saturday, the G20 nations adopted a consensus declaration that avoided condemning Russia for the war in Ukraine but called on all states not to use force to grab territory.

The consensus came as a surprise as the G20 is deeply divided over the war in Ukraine, with Western nations earlier pushing for strong condemnation of Russia in the Leaders’ Declaration, while others demanded a focus on broader economic issues.

‘PM Modi Gets Nervous On Adani Matter’, Says Rahul Gandhi As He Calls For JPC Probe Again

A thorough investigation should take place in the Adani matter, Rahul Gandhi told reporters in Mumbai.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi | File

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) should probe reports that Adani family associates invested “hundreds of millions” in the company through opaque investment funds based in Mauritius.

Billionaire Gautam Adani’s group was on Thursday hit by fresh allegations of associates of the promoter family using Mauritius-based ‘opaque’ investment funds to secretly invest hundreds of millions of dollars to fuel the spectacular rise in group stocks during 2013 to 2018, a charge the conglomerate denied vehemently.

A thorough investigation should take place in the Adani matter, Rahul Gandhi told reporters in Mumbai.

“Why is PM Modi silent? Why doesn’t he get this investigated,” Gandhi asked.

“Prominent global financial newspapers have raised very important questions on the Adani matter,” Rahul Gandhi said, brandishing copies of the newspapers.

“India’s reputation is at stake ahead of the G20 meet in the country. PM Modi should take action and get the Adani issue investigated,” he said.

Pro-Kyiv Russians urge Wagner Group to revenge Prigozhin’s death

A group of Russian militants who fight on the Ukrainian side called on the Wagner Group of mercenaries to switch sides and join their ranks to revenge the deaths of Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin and their commander Dmitry Utkin.

Russian air authorities have said Prigozhin, Utkin and eight other people were on a private plane that crashed with no survivors north of Moscow on Wednesday.

“You are facing a serious choice now – you can stand in a stall of Russia’s defence ministry and serve as watchdogs for executors of your commanders or take revenge,” commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC) Denis Kapustin said in a video address published late on Thursday.

“To take revenge you need to switch to Ukraine’s side,” the commander said.

The crash came two months to the day after Prigozhin and his Wagner mercenaries staged a mutiny against Russian military commanders in which they took control of a southern city, Rostov, and advanced towards Moscow before turning around 200 kilometers far from the capital.

Russia has opened an investigation into the crash, but its outcome is unlikely to shake a widespread belief that Prigozhin was killed as an act of vengeance for staging the mutiny.

Xi Jinping Cries Foul, Says Rules Being Written by Those with ‘Strongest Muscles’ at BRICS Meet

Chinese President Xi Jinping said that all nations should write and uphold international rules based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and not by those who have the “strongest muscles or the loudest of voice”.

The Chinese President’s statements will spark reactions from observers as China faces accusations of encroaching on territories of its neighbours on its western and eastern side. It also claims that it will reunify Taiwan with the motherland by force if necessary.

“International rules must be written and upheld jointly by all countries based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter rather than dictated by those with strongest muscles or the loudest of voice,” Xi Jinping said while addressing the open plenary session of the 15th BRICS Summit.

“BRICS countries should practise true multilateralism, stick to solidarity and oppose division,” Xi Jinping further added.

Xi Jinping said that BRICS nations must focus on championing the spirit of inclusiveness and promote peaceful coexistence and harmony between civilisations. “We should respect all modernisation paths that each country chooses on its own and oppose ideological rivalry, systemic confrontation and clash of civilisations,” Xi Jinping said.

Mamata’s Rakesh Roshan gaffe in viral video after Chandrayaan 3 landing: ‘Indira Gandhi asked…’

Mamata Banerjee said Indira Gandhi asked ‘Rakesh Roshan’ how India looked from space. The clip went viral after Chandrayaan 3’s successful landing.

West Bengal chief minister and a key opposition leader Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said when ‘Rakesh Roshan reached the moon’, Indira Gandhi asked him how India looked from there. Banerjee said this at an event after Isro’s Chandrayaan 3 successfully soft landed on the south pole of the moon on Wednesday. The clip went viral as Mamata Banerjee confused astronaut Rakesh Sharma with Bollywood personality Rakesh Roshan, father of Hrithik Roshan. Also, Rakesh Sharma did not go to the moon. His conversation with Indira Gandhi was from space. “Sare jahan see accha,” Rakesh Sharma said replying to Indira Gandhi’s question, “Upar se Bharat kaisa dikhta hai aapko (How does India look like from space?).”

“I remember when they reached the moon, Indira Gandhi asked Rakesh Roshan how India looked from there, for space,” Mamata Banerjee said. The clip went viral adding to the list of public displays of ignorance by political leaders on the question of India’s prestigious and successful moon mission. For example, Rajasthan sports minister Ashok Chandna congratulated the ‘passengers’ who were on Chandrayaan 3 after its successful soft landing. Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar was asked on Chandrayaan 3 before the soft landing. He apparently did not understand the question and asked the minister who was with him.

Pakistan President denies signing controversial bills, begins political slugfest: What is happening?

President Arif Alvi denied approving changes to the Official Secrets Act and the Pakistan Army Act, claiming that he was undermined by his own staff. The law ministry, however, asked him to “take responsibility for his own actions”.

“As God is my witness, I did not sign Official Secrets Amendment Bill 2023 & Pakistan Army Amendment Bill 2023 as I disagreed with these laws,” Pakistan President Arif Alvi posted on X Sunday (August 20).

With these words, Alvi triggered one of the most absurd political controversies of all time in Pakistan.

The bills he was referring to, were approved by the Pakistan National Assembly and the Senate a few weeks ago and sent for presidential assent. Alvi was deemed to have given his assent to both of them – the Official Secrets (Amendment) Bill, 2023 with effect from August 17 and the Pakistan Army (Amendment) Bill, 2023 from August 11. But their legal status is now up in the air, in light of the President’s latest comments.

“You Define Corruption In India”: Smriti Irani Hits Out At Congress

The Union Minister said the Congress should remember what was said to the British: Quit India.

No-Trust Debate in parliament: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reply to the debate on Thursday.

New Delhi: After a flip-flop on when he would speak, Rahul Gandhi launched a blistering attack on the BJP during the no-confidence debate today and said the party had killed Bharat Mata in Manipur. His attack was countered by Union Minister Smriti Irani.

Here are the top 10 updates on this big story

  1. “I went to Manipur a few days ago. Our Prime Minister didn’t go yet, because, for him, Manipur is not part of India. I am saying Manipur, but the truth today is that there is no Manipur. You have divided Manipur, broken it up. I spoke to women and children in relief camps, which our Prime Minister hasn’t done till date,” Rahul Gandhi said.  “Like I said at the beginning of my speech,  Bharat is the voice of the people, the voice of their hearts. You have killed that voice in Manipur. That means you have killed Bharat Mata in Manipur. You are anti-national, you are not patriots. You are not the protectors of Bharat Mata, you are her killers,” he added.
  2. Hitting out at the Congress, Union Minister Smriti Irani said, “You define corruption in India, you define incompetence in India. You are not India, for India is not corrupt. India believes in merit, and not dynasty. Today, of all days, people like you should remember what was told to the British: Quit India. Corruption quit India, dynasty quit India. Merit now finds place in India.”
  3. Other Union Ministers – Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman and Jyotiraditya Scindia are expected to speak in Lok Sabha today. Kiren Rijiju, who participated in the debate yesterday, said the Opposition will regret bringing the No-Confidence Motion because it comes at the “wrong time and the wrong manner”, given India’s current stature in the world.
  4. The Prime Minister will reply to the debate on Thursday. He chaired the BJP’s Parliamentary Party meeting yesterday ahead of the big vote. Taking a swipe at the INDIA alliance, the Prime Minister reportedly said that this is not a vote to express distrust in the government, but to see who can trust whom in the opposition. “It’s a test of their own internal trust,” he reportedly said.
  5. In recent weeks, PM Modi has frequently attacked the opposition bloc for calling itself INDIA, accusing the parties, particularly the Congress, of attempting a rebranding to whitewash their past record as the former UPA or United Progressive Alliance.
  6. Gaurav Gogoi said ‘INDIA’ was forced to bring the No-Confidence Motion against the government to break Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “vow of silence” on Manipur. He alleged that a government which talks about “one India” has created “two Manipurs — one living in the hills and the other in the valley”.
  7. Home Minister Amit Shah, during a discussion on the Delhi Services bill on Monday, accused the Opposition of running away from a debate on Manipur. “The question is Manipur situation and what steps the government is taking there, not a show of strength by voting. If you want voting, I dare you to make this bill fall through voting,” Mr Shah said.
  8. The session, which started on July 20, has been continually disrupted by Opposition protests. The opposition contends that in view of the 170-plus deaths, injuries and displacements of thousands of people since the ethnic violence broke out in May, there is nothing more urgent that can demand the Prime Minister’s attention.
