Challenge Rahul Gandhi to fight against me in Hyderabad: Asaduddin Owaisi

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to fight the Lok Sabha polls next year from Hyderabad, the former’s bastion.

Asaduddin Owaisi has challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to fight against him in Hyderabad.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has thrown down a challenge to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, calling on him to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Hyderabad, the former’s bastion.

“Abki baar Wayanad nahi, abki baar Hyderabad (Contest elections from Hyderabad and not Wayanad),” said Owaisi, referring to Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala.

“You [Rahul Gandhi] keep giving big statements, come to the ground and fight against me. People from Congress will say a lot of things, but I am ready,” he said at a public meeting in Hyderabad on Sunday, September 25.

Owaisi’s salvo against Rahul Gandhi comes days after the Congress leader launched a blistering attack on the four-time Hyderabad MP, accusing him of being in the BJP’s pocket by highlighting the fact that central probe agencies are not investigating him.

“There is no case against AIMIM. Only the opposition is attacked. Modi ji never attacks his own people. He regards your CM and AIMIM leaders as his own, and therefore, there is no case against them,” the Gandhi scion told a gathering in Tukkuguda last week after Congress announced its poll guarantees in Telangana.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi held closed-door meetings with some members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in Brussels on Thursday, marking the start of his three-nation European tour.

According to sources, the human rights situation in Manipur was among the topics that were raised during his meetings in the Belgian capital. This comes against the backdrop of a resolution entitled ‘India, the situation in Manipur’ which had been adopted by the European Parliament in July.

The discussions in Brussels, which were not listed on the official parliamentary agenda of the day, were described as successful by Opposition party sources.

India in the past has said that the Indian authorities at all levels, including the judiciary, are seized of the situation in Manipur and are taking steps to maintain peace and harmony and law and order.

“The European Parliament would be well advised to utilise its time more productively on its internal issues,” Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in July when the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the human rights situation in India, with particular reference to the clashes in Manipur.

He added that “such interference in India’s internal affairs is unacceptable, and reflects a colonial mindset”.

“Shri @RahulGandhi at a round table with MEPs in the European Parliament, co-hosted by MEP Alviina Almetsa (Shadow Rapporteur on EU-India Relationship) and MEP Pierre Larrouturou (portfolios within Parliamentary budget, climate & employment generation),” the Congress Party said in a tweet, confirming the meeting.

Later on Thursday, Gandhi attended an event organised by civil society organisations focussed on human rights issues within the European Union (EU). The day concluded with an interaction over dinner with the Belgium-based Indian diaspora.

‘PM Modi Gets Nervous On Adani Matter’, Says Rahul Gandhi As He Calls For JPC Probe Again

A thorough investigation should take place in the Adani matter, Rahul Gandhi told reporters in Mumbai.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi | File

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) should probe reports that Adani family associates invested “hundreds of millions” in the company through opaque investment funds based in Mauritius.

Billionaire Gautam Adani’s group was on Thursday hit by fresh allegations of associates of the promoter family using Mauritius-based ‘opaque’ investment funds to secretly invest hundreds of millions of dollars to fuel the spectacular rise in group stocks during 2013 to 2018, a charge the conglomerate denied vehemently.

A thorough investigation should take place in the Adani matter, Rahul Gandhi told reporters in Mumbai.

“Why is PM Modi silent? Why doesn’t he get this investigated,” Gandhi asked.

“Prominent global financial newspapers have raised very important questions on the Adani matter,” Rahul Gandhi said, brandishing copies of the newspapers.

“India’s reputation is at stake ahead of the G20 meet in the country. PM Modi should take action and get the Adani issue investigated,” he said.

‘Rahul Gandhi Will Contest From Amethi’, Announces UP Congress Chief Ajay Rai, Says ‘Smriti Irani Rattled’

In a significant upset, the former Congress president faced defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Amethi against the BJP’s Smriti Irani.

Rahul Gandhi | PTI

The recently appointed Congress chief for Uttar Pradesh, Ajay Rai, asserted on Friday that Rahul Gandhi is set to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Amethi constituency.

Addressing questions from journalists regarding Gandhi’s potential contest from the previous Congress stronghold in UP, Rai stated, “Without a doubt, Rahul Gandhi will contest the upcoming election from Amethi. The residents of Amethi are keen on this.”

Responding to a query about Priyanka Gandhi’s possible candidacy in Varanasi, Rai remarked, “Should Priyanka Gandhi express her desire to contest from Varanasi, each and every member of our party will put forth their utmost effort to ensure her victory.”

In the context of BJP’s Smriti Irani’s remark about Rahul Gandhi refraining from contesting elections in Amethi and evading the challenge, Ajay Rai dismissed the assertion and labeled Smriti Irani herself as “perturbed.”

“She is evidently rattled. Remember, she promised sugar at ₹13 per kg, but has she been able to fulfill that commitment? The people of Amethi are here today seeking answers. Ask Smriti Irani what happened to her pledge of providing sugar at ₹13 per kg in exchange for votes for the BJP. The public demands accountability,” Ajay Rai declared during his interaction with the press.

Ajay Rai appointed UP Congress chief

On Thursday, the Congress party announced the immediate appointment of Ajay Rai, a former MLA, as the President of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee.

In an official statement, the party conveyed its gratitude for the efforts made by the departing PCC President Brijlal Khabri, a former MP, as well as all the zonal Presidents.

Ajay Rai had contested the Varanasi seat against PM Modi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Despite his substantial loss to PM Modi by a significant margin, Rai managed to secure only a 14 percent portion of the overall votes.

Notably, Brijlal Khabri will hold the distinction of having the briefest tenure as UPCC President, having served for just 10 months.

Bigger Win in 2024, Unprepared Oppn, Attack on RaGa, ‘Freebie’ Culture, Peace in Manipur | Modi’s 5 Messages

PM Narendra Modi replies to the motion of no-confidence in Lok Sabha during the monsoon session of Parliament, in New Delhi on August 10. (Image: PTI)

Exuding full confidence that he will return in 2024 with an even bigger mandate for the National Democratic Alliance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the people of the country have “no confidence” in the Congress. He further said the new alliance, INDIA, was full of “arrogance” where everyone wanted to be in power and the opposition was unprepared even after five years.

“In 2028, when you bring another no-confidence motion, India will be among the first three big economies of the world… this is Modi’s guarantee. Please prepare better for the next motion,” the prime minister said, mocking the opposition in his reply to the no-confidence motion.

Prime Minister Modi took potshots at the Gandhi family saying they cannot tolerate that a “gareeb ka beta” has become the PM. With Congress leader Rahul Gandhi seated opposite him in Lok Sabha, Modi said a failed product was being relaunched repeatedly without any success. He said the entire country was hurt by Gandhi’s “death of Bharat Mata” statement.

Ironically, the opposition walked out of Lok Sabha amid Modi’s blistering attack, complaining that the PM did not speak about the Manipur issue. The motion had been brought to make him speak about Manipur, as per the opposition.

But soon after the walkout took place, Modi spoke in detail about the ethnic violence in Manipur and the history of the tribal conflict for almost 30 minutes and appealed to the opposition to not politicise the situation. He said the central government was concerned over the violence but hoped for peace, while blaming the Congress for problems in the northeast over decades.

Here are five big messages by Modi in his over two-hour address:

‘BIGGER WIN IN 2024’

Modi said the NDA will win with more seats in 2024 than in 2019. “People declared no confidence for the Congress in the last election, too, after their no-confidence motion in 2018; we won with even more seats. Their no-confidence motion is a good omen for us. It seems that they have decided that in 2024, too, we will win by breaking all records and have a grand victory,” he said.

He further said the opposition had “cremated” the UPA in Bengaluru, but were celebrating it. “It is putting new plaster on a falling house, new paint on a rusted machine, trying to show a useless vehicle as an electric vehicle. This is a ‘ghamandiya gathbandhan’ (an alliance of arrogance). The person you are following has no understanding of this country’s language and traditions,” he added.

The PM also said to keep themselves alive, the opposition had to depend on the NDA as they only added two Is to it to form the word ‘INDIA’ as the name of the new opposition front.

“The first ‘I’ is the arrogance of 26 parties. The second ‘I’ is one family’s arrogance,” the PM said, pointing out to inherent contradictions in the new opposition front and said these parties had tried to break the self-confidence of the people by bringing this no-confidence motion as they cannot digest India’s progress.

“For many opposition parties, they have a hunger for power; for them, the party comes before the people and the country. They are more worried about their political future,” the PM said, adding that the opposition felt that by using the country’s name, it could restore its credibility. “But they will soon be fighting.”

UNPREPARED OPPOSITION

Modi also pointed out that the opposition was unprepared to take him on and alluded to their non-seriousness. “Even your darbaris (faithfuls) are unhappy. What kind of debate was done by you? The fielding was done by opposition, but fours and sixes were hit from the treasury side. Why do you not come with preparation? I gave you five years to prepare? Kya haal hai aapka,” he said.

The PM pointed out how even the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Choudhary, was not given a chance by the Congress to speak in the debate and, it was only after Amit Shah’s offer, that the speaker was gracious enough to give him a chance.

Rahul Gandhi’s flying kiss in Parliament sparks controversy; Check out how internet reacted

Rahul Gandhi blew a flying kiss while leaving the Lok Sabha, sparking controversy and mixed reactions on social media. (PTI)

Rahul Gandhi delivered his first speech at Lok Sabha on August 9 after being reinstated as an MP. However, he didn’t remain in the House to listen to the response, as he had a scheduled event in Rajasthan at 3 pm. Upon departing the Lok Sabha, he repeated a gesture reminiscent of his famous hug and wink during the previous no-confidence motion against the PM Modi government in 2018. It is believed that Rahul Gandhi blew a flying kiss while exiting.

Union Minister Smriti Irani, along with several BJP MPs, voiced their strong objections following an alleged flying kiss gesture made by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi towards BJP MPs in the Lok Sabha. Although the incident was not captured on camera, it reportedly occurred as Rahul Gandhi was leaving the Lok Sabha premises after delivering a speech concerning the no-confidence motion on Manipur.

Smriti Irani, without directly mentioning Rahul Gandhi’s name, denounced the act by stating, “Only a misogynistic man can exhibit the gesture of a flying kiss towards female parliamentarians. This action sheds light on the lineage he originates from and reflects the attitude his family and party hold towards women.” Smriti Irani said that such behaviour had never been witnessed in the country’s Parliament before. BJP has questioned the appropriateness of the behaviour, labeling it as “chichora type behaviour,” as reported by HT.

This parliamentary episode has resonated across major platforms such as TikTok, Twitter, Reddit, Instagram, Telegram, YouTube, and Facebook. Here are some diverse reactions it drew from netizens on these different platforms, while some were hilarious involving memes, the others condemned the act suggesting it to be against the code of conduct in the parliament.

X’s (formerly Twitter) reactions
On Twitter, numerous users have crafted memes that humorously parody the incident, while others have voiced their disapproval of such conduct within the parliamentary arena. Certain individuals have even raised concerns about the appropriateness of such behaviour for an elected representative, fearing that it might compromise the decorum of the esteemed institution.

Rahul Gandhi to make landmark visit to Wayanad on August 12 following MP status reinstatement

The reinstatement of Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha membership came after the Supreme Court issued a stay on his conviction in the 2019 defamation case involving the use of the ‘Modi’ surname. This legal development has paved the way for his renewed engagement with his constituents in Wayanad.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is set to embark on a visit to his constituency of Wayanad in Kerala on August 12 and 13. This visit holds significant importance as it marks his first return to the region following his reinstatement as a Lok Sabha MP. KC Venugopal, the Congress general secretary, expressed the sentiments of the Wayanad residents, stating that they are overjoyed as democracy prevailed and their representative’s voice has been restored in Parliament.

He emphasized that Rahul Gandhi is not just a Member of Parliament, but a cherished member of their extended family.

During the legal proceedings, a panel of three judges consisting of Justices BR Gavai, PS Narasimha, and Sanjay Kumar highlighted that the provisions of the Representation of People Act were invoked solely due to the two-year prison term handed to Rahul Gandhi.

The bench emphasized that if the sentence had been even marginally shorter by just one day, the stipulations of the Act would not have been applicable. This distinction particularly holds significance for cases of non-cognisable, bailable, and compoundable offenses.

Rahul Gandhi To Lead No-Trust Vote Debate Today; Kiren Rijiju Says Opposition Will Regret

No-Trust Vote Debate: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday said the Congress and other opposition parties have brought the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha at a “wrong time and in a wrong manner.”

New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is expected to lead the Opposition charge while participating in the no-confidence motion discussion in Lok Sabha on Wednesday. According to Congress sources, Rahul Gandhi sprung a surprise by choosing not to initiate the discussion in the Lower House on Tuesday. However, the Wayanad MP is likely to participate in the ongoing debate during the early afternoon hours on Wednesday.

According to sources, Rahul Gandhi might be among the initial speakers to participate in the discussion on the no-confidence motion, when the House convenes. The discussion is expected to continue till August 10 and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to reply to the motion on the same day.

Sources said that Gandhi’s last-minute withdrawal was part of a strategy, as it was decided that he will speak after some big leaders from the BJP have spoken. They said that this decision was taken as part of a strategy of not exposing Rahul Gandhi to all the attacks, which he might have faced if he had spoken first.

Rahul Gandhi To Begin No-Trust Debate Today, 5 Ministers On Centre’s List

No-Confidence Motion: The BJP has called a meeting of its parliamentary party on Tuesday ahead of the no-confidence motion, which can be discussed, answered and voted on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Opposition’s No-Confidence Motion against the Narendra Modi government will come up in parliament today – in absence of the Prime Minister. Congress’s Rahul Gandhi, freshly reinstated in parliament, will open the debate, sources have said.

Here are top 10 points on this big story:

  1. The BJP has called a meeting of its parliamentary party on Tuesday ahead of the no-confidence motion, which can be discussed, answered and voted on Wednesday and Thursday.
  2. The motion, which has practically no chance of getting passed, is the Opposition’s circuitous manner of compelling the Prime Minister to speak on the ongoing violence in Manipur, which has dominated the monsoon session of parliament.
  3. The session, which started on July 20, has been continually disrupted by Opposition protests. Only a few bills of the government’s long list have been passed.
  4. The Opposition has been demanding a discussion on Manipur, dubbing it the burning issue of the day. The government has agreed, but made it clear that the Prime Minister will not address the House on the issue — which has been the Opposition’s big demand.
  5. Five ministers will speak during the debate – Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, Smriti Irani, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Kiren Rijiju. Ten other BJP MPs will also participate in the debate.
  6. The government has argued that after major violence took place in Manipur in 1993 and 1997, no statement was made in the Parliament in one case and in the other, the junior home minister had given a statement. Sources said the government’s stance is that in absence of a precedent, there is no cause for asking for the Prime Minister’s statement.
  7. The opposition contends that in view of the 170-plus deaths, injuries and displacements of thousands of people since the ethnic violence broke out in May, there is nothing more urgent that can demand the Prime Minister’s attention.

Supreme Court stays conviction of Rahul Gandhi in defamation case for remark on Modi surname

Gandhi’s Lok Sabha membership will stand restored with the stay on his conviction.

Rahul Gandhi and Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the conviction and two-year jail term imposed on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi by a Gujarat court in a criminal defamation case for his remark “All thieves have Modi surname” [Rahul Gandhi vs Purnesh Ishwarbhai Modi and anr].

A bench of Justices BR Gavai, PS Narasimha and PV Sanjay Kumar said that the trial court did not give any specific reasons for imposing the maximum punishment of two years’ imprisonment prescribed under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for the offence of defamation though the offence is a non-cognizable one.

The apex court further noted that that the ramifications of the ruling (of conviction) are wide and affect the rights of electorate of Wayanad, the constituency which Gandhi was representing as a member of parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha.

He had been disqualified from parliament after his conviction in the case.

“We are of the considered view that the ramification of subsection (3) of Section 8 of the [Representation of People] Act are wide-ranging. They not only affect the right of the appellant to continue in public life but also affect the right of the electorate, who have elected him, to represent their constituency. We are of the considered view, taking into consideration the aforesaid aspects and particularly that no reasons have been given by the learned Trial Judge for imposing the maximum sentence which has the effect of incurring disqualification under Section 8(3) of the Act, the order of conviction needs to be stayed, pending hearing of the present appeal,” the top court ordered.

With this order, Gandhi’s membership to Lok Sabha from Wayanad would stand restored.

Pendency of appeal would not come in way of appellate court in deciding appeal in accordance with law, the Court added.

The Court in its order underscored that the trial judge was expected to give reasons for imposing maximum punishment for a non-cognizable offence.

“Except the admonition given to the appellant by this Court in contempt proceedings … no other reason has been assigned by the learned Trial Judge while imposing the maximum sentence of two years … Had the sentence been even a day lesser, the provisions of subsection (3) of Section 8 of the Act would not have been attracted. Particularly, when an offence is non-cognizable, bailable and compoundable, the least that the Trial Judge was expected to do was to give some reasons as to why, in the facts and circumstances, he found it necessary to impose the maximum sentence of two years,” the Court said.

The Court also noted that the Sessions Court and the Gujarat High Court too did not go into that aspect.

“Though the learned Appellate Court and the learned High Court have spent voluminous pages while rejecting the application for stay of conviction, these aspects have not even been touched,” the order noted.

At the same time, the Court also said that persons in public life should exercise caution while making statements.

“No doubt that the alleged utterances by the appellant are not in good taste. A person in public life is expected to exercise a degree of restraint while making public speeches. However, as has been observed by this Court while accepting affidavit of the appellant herein in aforementioned contempt proceedings, the appellant herein ought to have been more careful while making the public speech.”

Gandhi moved the top court after a Magistrate court convicted him and a Sessions Court as well as the Gujarat High Court refused to stay the conviction.

The Supreme Court had last month issued notice on the plea by Congress leader.

Gandhi’s plea before the apex court was limited to a prayer for stay on conviction and two-year sentence imposed by the Magistrate court.

The Congress leader was convicted by a Magistrate court in Surat on March 23 for his remark that he had made at an election rally in Karnataka’s Kolar constituency, in 2019.

Gandhi had, in his speech linked Prime Minister Narendra Modi with fugitives like Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi.

He had said,

“Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi. How come all the thieves have ‘Modi’ as a common surname?”

The proceedings in the instant case arose after Purnesh Modi, a former BJP Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), had taken exception to the the remarks in question, claiming that Gandhi humiliated and defamed persons with the Modi surname.

The magistrate court accepted the contention of Modi that by his speech, Gandhi has intentionally insulted the people with a ‘Modi’ surname.

In his 168-page judgment, Judge Hadirash Varma said that since Gandhi is a Member of Parliament (MP), whatever he says will have a greater impact. Thus, he should have exercised restraint, the Magistrate ruled.

A sessions court in Surat had, on April 20, dismissed Gandhi’s plea seeking suspension of his conviction by the Magistrate court.

Gandhi then moved the High Court, which too refused to extend relief to him leading to the present appeal before the top court.

Purnesh Modi in his counter-affidavit before the Supreme Court contended that Gandhi has remained arrogant and refused to apologise.

In response, the Congress leader remained steadfast in his stance that he is not guilty of the offence of criminal defamation.

He said that if he wanted to apologise and compound the offence, he could have done it much earlier.

Five grounds on which Gujarat High Court refused to stay conviction of Rahul Gandhi in defamation case [READ JUDGMENT]

The Court in its 123-page-long judgment underlined grounds against Gandhi which increased the seriousness of the offence. In this piece, we take a look at five main grounds

Rahul Gandhi
Rahul Gandhi

The Gujarat High Court on Friday delivered its verdict on the plea by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi against the conviction and two-year jail term imposed on him by a Magistrate court in a criminal defamation case for his remark on ‘Modi’ surname. [Rahul Gandhi v Purnesh Modi]

Single-judge Justice Hemant Prachchhak determined that no case was made out to stay the conviction.

“In anyway, conviction would not result in any injustice to the applicant. The conviction order is just, proper and legal. There is no need to interfere with the said order. Therefore, the application is dismissed,” the Court held.

The Court in its 123-page-long judgment underlined grounds against Gandhi which increased the seriousness of the offence.

Below are five grounds on which the Court denied relief to Gandhi.

Defamation a serious offence of public character involving fundamental right to reputation and dignity

Relying on the Supreme Court’s judgment in Subramanian Swamy Vs. Union of India, the High Court underlined that reputation as a concept has been recognised to be an important part of the personality of a person and has become a fundamental right.

The Court said that the offence under Section 499 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) can be considered to be a serious offence having a large public character which affects the society at large in a case wherein a large number of persons of the society have been defamed.

Assam CM to file defamation case against Rahul Gandhi over ‘Adani’ tweet

Sarma said that he would file the case after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Assam on April 14.

Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Sunday said he would file a defamation case against Congress’ Rahul Gandhi over his tweet on ‘Adani’.

“Whatever Rahul Gandhi has tweeted is defamatory and once PM Modi goes back from Assam, a case will be filed against Gandhi after April 14,” mentioned the Assam Chief Minister.

It may be noted that taking to Twitter, Gandhi has taken names of former Congress leaders including Himanta Biswa Sarma, Jyotiraditya Schindia, Gulam Nabi Azad, Anil Antony and Kiran Reddy and connected them with Adani.

Sarma, responding to Gandhi’s tweet, had earlier said, “It was our decency to have never asked you, on where have you concealed the proceeds of crime from the Bofors and National Herald Scams. And how you allowed Ottavio Quattrocchi to escape the clutches of Indian justice multiple times. Anyway, we will meet in the Court of Law.”

Rahul Gandhi In Surat Today To Challenge His Conviction In Defamation Case

Rahul Gandhi is likely to move a plea in Surat’s sessions court to set aside the Magistrate order convicting him in the defamation case for a remark seen as an insult to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Rahul Gandhi’s Wayanad seat in Kerala is now vacant following his removal from the office.

New Delhi/Surat: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will appear in a Gujarat court today to appeal against his conviction and two-year sentencing in a 2019 defamation case.
Rahul Gandhi is likely to move a plea in Surat’s sessions court to set aside the Magistrate order convicting him in the defamation case for a remark seen as an insult to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The former Congress president, sources say, will also ask for an interim stay on the conviction which would also restore his Lok Sabha membership.

Mr Gandhi, who was recently disqualified as a parliament MP after the Gujarat’s court order, will be accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and the Chief Ministers of three Congress-ruled states – Ashok Gehlot, Bhupesh Baghel and Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

He had met his mother Sonia Gandhi yesterday before his court appearance.

The 52-year-old was convicted by a court and sentenced to prison for two years in Gujarat last month for a 2019 speech in which he linked PM Modi’s last name with two fugitive businessmen, remarking how the “thieves” shared the same last name.

The court, however, granted him bail for 30 days to appeal the verdict.

The defamation case was filed against Rahul Gandhi by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi for saying “How come all thieves have the common surname Modi?”

Mr Gandhi’s Wayanad seat in Kerala is now vacant following his removal from the office and the Election Commission may now announce a special election for the seat.

Rahul Gandhi’s anti-Savarkar remarks have put us in a difficult spot, say Maharashtra Congress leaders

“The Congress often finds itself trying to do a balancing act between secular politics and soft Hindutva,” a senior Nagpur-based Congress leader lamented.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Nana Patole (left), Congress leader Rahul Gandhi (centre), and V D Savarkar (right)

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s remarks against Vinayak Damodar Savarkar have led to some consternation within the party unit in Maharashtra. Several elected members of the party said on the condition of anonymity that adverse comments on Savarkar do not augur well for the party in the western state.

Officially, state Congress leaders have rallied around Rahul Gandhi with greater zeal. They participated in protests against Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha. But no party leader in Maharashtra has echoed Rahul Gandhi’s “mafiveer Savarkar” remark.

A senior state Congress leader said, “When we discuss reformers or revolutionaries, we have to be very careful about public sentiments and perceptions built over several decades.”

He further said, “Savarkar’s contribution to the freedom movement cannot be questioned. It is a fact that he was sentenced to ‘kala pani’ in the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He served 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, which is unimaginable. At the same time, it is likely that he filed a mercy petition to escape the mental and physical torture. But that does not undermine his role. He has written several books. Ideologically, the Congress may not conform to his ideology, but we should not question his patriotism.”

Not surprisingly then that the recent Congress rallies held in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Akola, and Buldhana saw the party focusing its attack on PM Narendra Modi and the BJP, said political observers.

The Congress stuck to the ‘script’ that the BJP plotted to divest Rahul Gandhi of his Lok Sabha membership as he had asked uncomfortable questions related to Narendra Modi’s ‘nexus’ with Gautam Adani, they added.

While making a public speech, MPCC (Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee) president Nana Patole said: “Savarkar’s two-nation theory is a reality. The fact that his politics led to the Hindu-Muslim divide cannot be ignored. The Hindutva that he propounded led to the creation of hatred between Hindus and Muslims which had lasting implications.”

State Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe said, “I would like to ask those attacking Rahul Gandhi, how will they justify BJP’s silence when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was being insulted? CM Eknath Shinde is just enacting BJP’s script when he says that they will hold rallies across the state to protest Savarkar’s alleged insult.”

A senior Nagpur-based Congress leader said, “We are not learning from our mistakes. Attacking Savarkar does not make any difference to the RSS-BJP. On the contrary, they get an opportunity to question our patriotism. We should not rake up old controversies. We should not digress from our attack on PM Modi and the BJP. If we have to attack the RSS-BJP, we should question the Sakal Hindu Samaj-led rallies against ‘love jihad’ and ‘land jihad.’”

“The Congress often finds itself trying to do a balancing act between secular politics and soft Hindutva,” he lamented.

Rahul Gandhi News : Congress to observe day-long ‘Satyagraha’ across India against Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha disqualification

Rahul Gandhi Defamation Case Live Updates Today: Congress workers will hold a Satyagraha in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statues at all states and district headquarters, from 10 am to 5 pm today.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addresses a presser at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi on Saturday, a day after he was disqualified from the Lok Sabha (Express)

The Congress Party will observe a day-long ‘Satyagraha’ today, in order to protest against Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha. The Satyagraha will be held in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statues at all states and district headquarters, from 10 am to 5 pm. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will stage the satyagraha at Raj Ghat in Delhi.

A day after Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha, he said “I was disqualified because PM Narendra Modi is scared of my next speech on Adani… I can see it in his eyes”. The former Wayanad MP said that he was not afraid and would continue to raise questions about the links between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and businessman Gautam Adani. He criticised the Centre for allegedly backing the businessman. “For this government, country is Adani and Adani is country,” he said.

Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad alleged that Congress did not try to immediately obtain a stay on Gandhi’s conviction by a Gujarat court because they wanted to “encash” the issue in the upcoming assembly polls in Karnataka. Prasad also charged Gandhi with having been “abusive, not critical” in his utterances about the Modi surname which led to the defamation suit.

Rahul Gandhi to face 2nd defamation case? Maha CM bristles over Savarkar remark

Rahul Gandhi has often targeted late Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar, saying that he helped the British rulers and wrote a mercy petition to them out of fear.

Maharashtra chief minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde speaks in state assembly.

Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for “defaming” late Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, demanding action against the former Lok Sabha member. Speaking in state assembly, which witnessed pandemonium on Friday over ruling party legislators hitting Rahul Gandhi’s poster with chappals – they were protesting against Gandhi’s four-month remarks on Savarkar – Shinde said the Congress leader defamed a man “who is not Maharashtra’s deity but is an idol for the whole country.”

“Any criticism of Rahul Gandhi will be lesser for his this deed,” he added.

In November last year, Gandhi, during his Maharashtra leg of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, said that Savarkar would write mercy petitions to be freed from the Andaman cellular jail and also accepted a pension from the British. He also claimed that Savarkar had helped the British government during the freedom struggle.

On Saturday, Gandhi again took a swipe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ideological fountainhead RSS when asked could have escaped the conviction and prison sentence had he apologised for his remarks.

“My name in not Savarkar, my name is Gandhi. Gandhis don’t apologise to anyone,” the ex-Wayanad MP told reporters at a press briefing in Congress headquarters in New Delhi.

A lower court in Surat convicted Gandhi for a 2019 speech in which he asked, “Why do all thieves have Modi as their surname?” Gandhi had referred to three three well-known and unrelated Modis — fugitive Indian diamond tycoon Nirav Modi; Lalit Modi, a cricket executive banned from the Indian Premier League (IPL); and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The court convicted him under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which provides for imprisonment of up to two years, and later released him on bail. The court also suspended the sentence for 30 days on Gandhi’s plea to allow him appeal against the ruling.

Election To Rahul Gandhi’s Wayanad Seat Soon? Poll Body To Decide

The Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala, which fell vacant yesterday after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as a Member of Parliament, may witness bypoll by September.
Mr Gandhi’s disqualification came following his conviction in a defamation case and a two-year jail sentence by a court in Gujarat’s Surat on Thursday. The Congress leader has been granted bail for 30 days to appeal the verdict.

Bypolls to vacant seats in the Parliament and state legislatures must be held within six months from when the seat fell vacant, according to Section 151A of the Representation of the People Act, 2015.

It was this Act that paved way for Mr Gandhi’s removal as an MP. Section 8(3) of the Act says an MP attracts disqualification the moment she or he is convicted and sentenced for at least two years.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat notified Mr Gandhi’s disqualification yesterday and now it’s up to the Election Commission to announce the bypoll dates.

Breaking: Rahul Gandhi Declared Disqualified As A Member Of Lok Sabha Following His Conviction In Defamation Case

Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi was today disqualified as a Member of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction in the criminal defamation case over his ‘Modi surname’ remark. A notification in this regard was issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat today. Gandhi is an MP from Kerala’s Wayanad district.

The disqualification is in terms of Article 102 (1) (e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act 1951. The 1951 Act provides that a person will be disqualified if convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for two years or more and shall continue to be disqualified for a further period of six years after his release.

Significantly, the disqualification can be reversed in case a higher court, in an appeal, grants a stay on the conviction of the person concerned or it goes on to decide the appeal moved against the conviction in favor of the person concerned.

It may be recalled that a Court in Gujarat’s Surat District yesterday convicted Congress leader and MP Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case for his remarks “why all thieves share the Modi surname” made during a political campaign in Karol in April 2019.

The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Varma sentenced him to two years in jail and also imposed a fine of Rs. 15,000 after finding him guilty under Sections 499 (Defamation), 500 (punishment for Defamation) IPC.

Rahul comes to Karnataka for Bharat Jodo Yatra, but speaks about ‘Bharat Todo’ in London: Assam CM

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma (ANI file photo)

Accusing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of abusing Indians and the Parliament, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said he visits Karnataka for ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, and while in London, speaks about ‘Bharat Todo’ (dividing India).

Repeatedly invoking Lord Ram and Hanuman while participating in the BJP’s ‘Vijaya Sankalpa Yatre’ here, Sarma praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, and urged the people of the state to vote the party back to power in Karnataka in the Assembly polls, likely by May.

Anjanadri in Gangavathi taluk of Koppal district is considered to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman, and the state government has allocated Rs 120 crore for the development of the revered place.

“If Prime Minister Modi goes to London or America, he heaps praise on India, but when our Rahul baba (Rahul Gandhi) goes to London, he abuses Indians and India’s Parliament,” Sarma said.

Addressing a gathering here, the BJP leader said: “He (Rahul Gandhi) comes to Karnataka and does Bharat Jodo Yatra, and in London he speaks about ‘Bharat Todo’ (dividing India).”

Congress has repeatedly divided India, he alleged, adding that, “I had asked Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, as to who divided the country in 1947? It was your nanaji (apparently referring to Rahul’s great grandfather, former PM Jawaharlal Nehru) who divided.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi too on Sunday had targeted Rahul Gandhi for his comments on democracy in the country.

He was apparently referring to Gandhi’s remarks made in London recently — that structures of Indian democracy are under “brutal attack”.

‘Angry at Indians…Seeking UK Intervention in India’: RaGa’s New London Clip Draws More Wrath

BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad accused Rahul Gandhi of shaming India on foreign soil by seeking foreign intervention. (Twitter/@INCIndia)

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi told the Indian diaspora in the United Kingdom that it is the “duty” of every Indian, everywhere in the world, to “speak up for India’s core values and protect our beloved democracy”.

His reply came after a woman in the audience said, “I’m feeling wretched at the state of my country. My father was an RSS man, and proudly so, but wouldn’t recognise the country that is now. For those of us, who are out of our country, how can we engage and empower our democracy?”

Talking to News18 about the new video clip, BJP leader Amit Malviya said, “Rahul Gandhi has been berating India and Indian institutions because they do not favour his kind of politics; his ideologies; his persona. Rahul Gandhi has to realise that he has been rejected by the people of this country, and he can’t be angry at them for making a choice. He has to realise that it is not his entitlement to be the prime minister of India. He has to understand that people do not see any merit in him as an individual or as a politician.”

BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad accused the Wayanad lawmaker of “shaming the country” on foreign soil by “seeking foreign intervention”.

“BJP would like to emphatically state with great agony that Rahul Gandhi, in his speeches, has sought to shame India’s democracy, polity, parliament, political system and judicial system,” said BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad, accusing the Congress leader of telling lies.

Gandhi had questioned at an event in London “why Europe and the US, the defenders of democracies, were oblivious of how a huge chunk of democracy in India had come undone”. The BJP said Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and his predecessor Sonia Gandhi should clarify on the comments.

Union minister Kiren Rijiju too reacted on Gandhi’s ‘voices of opposition leaders muted in Parliament’ statement. “Be it Rahul Gandhi or others, they keep abusing the government and PM Modi from dawn to dusk. The one who speaks the most says that they are not allowed to speak,” Rijiju said.

BJP slams Rahul Gandhi for seeking ‘US, Europe intervention in India’; Congress hits back

A heated war of words erupted yet again between BJP and Congress on Tuesday over a series of remarks made by Rahul Gandhi in UK against the state of democracy in India.

While the BJP lashed out at Rahul for apparently seeking the intervention of US and Europe in India’s internal affairs, the Congress accused the saffron party of “distoring and twisting” the Wayanad MP’s statements.

Here’s a roundup of the political slugfest …

‘Utterly irresponsible statement’

Launching a searing attack on Rahul, the BJP said that it’s clear that the former Congress president is completely in the grip of “Maoist thought process through his minions” and also “anarchist elements”.

Addressing a press conference, former Union minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad expressed his party’s disapproval of Rahul “misusing the forum of British parliament” to spread shameful lies and unfounded claims, and said there needed to be a “proper rebuttal”.

He accused the Congress leader of shaming India’s democracy, polity, Parliament, judicial system and strategic security from a foreign land.

Terming the remarks as “utterly irresponsible” and “shameful”, Prasad asked Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge to clear the party’s stand over Rahul Gandhi ‘s statements.

Congress hits back as BJP attacks Rahul Gandhi for Cambridge address

The BJP had accused Rahul of praising China and denigrating India on foreign soil.

Rahul Gandhi at University of Cambridge, Thursday. ANI

As the BJP continued to attack Rahul Gandhi over his remarks about China, the Congress on Saturday hit back, saying it is Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is in “eternal love” with China. Delivering a lecture at the Cambridge Judge Business School on “Learning to Listen in the 21st Century”, Rahul, while comparing the American and Chinese models, had argued that the Chinese value harmony and don’t want things to go out of control which was “legitimate.”

The BJP had accused Rahul of praising China and denigrating India on foreign soil. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra accused Rahul of dissuading investors from investing in India at a time when the world is seeing the country as a “bright spot” and foreign firms are leaving China to do business here.

“Just because you are not a bright kid and not a bright kid of your dynastic party doesn’t mean India is not a bright spot,” he said, hitting back at the Congress leader.

Addressing a press conference, Supriya Shrinate — the head of the party’s social media — said Rahul was “talking about and making comparisons between America and China, talking about America as a free and fair society and talking about China as a close society and a complex ecosystem.”

“He spoke about how China gets into corporations, gets into the daily lives of its citizens, it is very intrusive, the Chinese government, a one party system is very intrusive…,” she said.

Hitting back at the BJP, she said there is an eternal love story brewing between [Narendra] Modi and China.

Rahul Gandhi’s Cambridge speech: ‘Modi blowing my country to smithereens … In Kashmir, militants were looking at me’

After Congress leader alleges Opposition leaders, including him, are under surveillance and democracy is under attack, BJP accuses him of “crying wolf on foreign shores”

At Cambridge, Gandhi gave a lecture titled “Learning to Listen in the 21st Century”. (Twitter: @ShashiTharoor)

Rahul Gandhi’s speech at Cambridge University earlier this week drew the BJP’s ire as it was learnt that the Congress leader spoke of the “threat to democracy” in India and alleged that several politicians, including him, were under surveillance.

Gandhi made the remarks during a lecture at the Cambridge Judge Business School (Cambridge JBS) on “Learning to Listen in the 21st Century”. BJP national spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill tweeted, “Instead of introspecting on loss of 172 seats out of 180 in N East polls, loss of 50+ elections out of 54 under his command, Rahul Gandhi is busy crying wolf on foreign shores! RG Cambridge speech is Classic Case of ‘Naach Na Jaane, Aangan Tedaa’ or ‘Bad Workman blames his tools’.”

Here are the 10 things that Gandhi spoke of:

On democracy in India

“Indian democracy is under pressure, is under attack. I am an Opposition leader in India and we are navigating that space. What is happening is that the institutional framework which is required for a democracy — Parliament, a free press, the judiciary — just the idea of mobilisation, just the idea of moving around … these are all getting constrained. So, we are facing an attack on the basic structure of Indian democracy.”

On federalism

“In the Constitution, India is described as a union of states and that union requires a negotiation, requires a conversation. It is slightly different than other countries. You can think about it much more at the scale of Europe. Multiple different states, much much bigger, requiring a conversation and a negotiation to actually move forward. It is that negotiation that is actually coming under and is under threat.”

Protests stifled

Showing a photograph of the police stopping him and several other party MPs at Vijay Chowk during a protest against Sonia Gandhi’s questioning by the Enforcement Directorate last July, he said, “That picture is taken in front of Parliament House. That is where a whole bunch of Opposition members of Parliament were just standing there talking about certain issues and we were just locked up and put in jail. And that has happened three or four times. And it has happened relatively violently.”

Attack on minorities

“You have also heard of the attack on minorities, the attack on the press. So, you get a sense of what is going on. The one way I would like to think about it is that in India democracy is a public good because it is by far the biggest democracy … so preserving Indian democracy is more than just about India. It is actually about the democratic structure and democratic system on the planet.”

Surveillance and attack on institutions

“Capture and control of media and judiciary. Surveillance and intimidation. I myself had Pegasus on my phone. A large number of politicians have Pegasus on their phones. I have been called by Intelligence officers who tell me, ‘Listen, please be careful of what you are saying on the phone because we are sort of recording the stuff.’ This is constant, constant pressure that we feel. Cases of opposition … I have got a number of criminal libel cases for things that should under no circumstances be criminal libel cases. So. that is the story. And that is what we are trying to defend. What we found as the Opposition is that it is very difficult to communicate with people when you have this type of assault on the media, on the democratic architecture.”

Bharat Jodo Yatra experience

“We started getting people who started talking to us about things that we never imagined that they would speak about … Suddenly, we were getting these emotional outbursts of people telling us the most personal things. So, I am walking and suddenly these two girls come, one of them grabs my hand on this side and the other one grabs my hand on the other side. When they grabbed my hand I felt something I have never felt before … I thought this is strange, the way they are holding my hand, there is something strange in it. It is almost like a desperate way of holding my hand. I looked at the girl and said tell me what’s happened, how you are doing? And she looks at me and she says well my sister and me were gang-raped by five guys. This is not a personal conversation that you will have with somebody who you have just met. I said let’s call the cops. That was my first reaction. I am like that’s a real problem, let’s call the cops.

“They were like, ‘Please, don’t call the cops, you can’t call the cops’ … And they are like, ‘If you call the cops we will be shamed.’ And then the girl says, ‘I will never be able to get married.’ So I said, ‘What do you want me to do?’ I said If I don’t call the cops how do I help you. They said, ‘No, we just wanted our brother to know what had happened to us.’ And I said, ‘You have told your brother what has happened to you, now what do I do?’ They said there is nothing you can do and they just walked away. You extrapolate that and then you can see thousands of women who have faced something like that and you can see the pain that is there, hidden, and you can see the difficulty that they are dealing with. I thought, these girls have dealt with this and now they are going to deal with it for the rest of their lives and they are never going to tell anybody. I thought that was crazy.”

Sonia Gandhi to Stay on as Congress Chief, No Resignation in Party, CWC Decides After 4-hour Meet

Four hours after a key meeting on Sunday, the Congress Working Committee “unanimously reaffirmed” faith in president Sonia Gandhi’s leadership, as well as called for large-scale reforms and corrective measures for an organisational revamp. The CWC asked Sonia Gandhi to address weaknesses and effect necessary changes, as per a statement released after the meeting that was held to address the party’s election debacle in five states.

The top decision-making body of the Congress brainstormed over a way forward and will hold a ‘chinatan shivir’ immediately after the budget session of parliament and the CWC will meet again, said general secretary KC Venugopal.

“Every single member of the CWC wants Sonia Gandhi to guide party till organisational elections are held,” Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said.

The Congress lost Punjab to the Aam Aadmi Party, could not wrest Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur from the BJP and the party’s tally in politically crucial Uttar Pradesh fell to its lowest.

Former party chief Rahul Gandhi, general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Venugopal, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, party’s leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and P Chidambaram were among those who attended the meeting.

The CWC said the election results were a cause of “serious concern” for the party, and that it accepted shortcomings in its election strategy. The party also said it could not overcome the anti-incumbency in Punjab in the short time after effecting a change of leadership. Captain Amarinder Singh was removed from the post of chief minister ahead of the assembly elections and replaced by Charanjit Singh Channi.

Venugopal said, “Including senior leaders, members openly participated in the decision to analyse the results. It was a sincere and fruitful analysis.”

Surjewala said state incharges took responsibility for the drubbing received by the party, sources said.

After refuting claims of Gandhis resigning, Congress reschedules CWC meet to Monday

Rahul Gandhi had resigned as Congress president after the party suffered its second consecutive defeat in general elections in 2019. Sonia Gandhi who took over the reins of the party again as interim president had also offered to quit in August 2020 after an open revolt by G-23 leaders but the CWC urged her to continue.
