Canada under fire for applauding ‘literal Nazi’ in parliament during Zelenskyy visit

Commenters and Jewish groups demanded an apology

Fox News anchor Bret Baier looks at the investigations into the Chinese spy balloon that traversed across the continental U.S. in February and other objects that were shot down after on ‘Special Report.’

Canadian Jewish organizations and social media critics are slamming the Canadian Parliament for giving a man who fought for the Nazis a standing ovation during an event featuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the country.

“FSWC is appalled that Canada’s Parliament gave a standing ovation to a Ukrainian veteran who served in a Nazi military unit during the Second World War implicated in the mass murder of Jews and others. An apology and explanation is owed,” the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Canadian nonprofit dedicated to educating people on the Holocaust, wrote on X, previously known as Twitter.

Video and photos show the Canadian Parliament erupted into cheers on Friday during Zelenskyy’s visit to the country’s capital of Ottawa, when Canadian lawmakers also honored Yaroslav Hunka, a 98-year-old Ukrainian immigrant who fought for the First Ukrainian Division, according to the Toronto Star. That division was also known as the Waffen-SS Galicia Division, which fought for the Nazis as its paramilitary arm under the Schutzstaffel organization, according to the outlet.

“The fact that a veteran who served in a Nazi military unit was invited to and given a standing ovation in Parliament is shocking. At a time of rising antisemitism and Holocaust distortion, it is incredibly disturbing to see Canada’s Parliament rise to applaud an individual who was a member of a unit in the Waffen-SS, a Nazi military branch responsible for the murder of Jews and others and that was declared a criminal organization during the Nuremberg Trials,” the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center continued in their statement.

Social media commenters have joined the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center in condemning the Canadian House for celebrating Hunka, who some called a “literal Nazi” and “monster.”

Canadian columnist Joe Warmington called for a “full apology” “for celebrating a Second World War Nazi in the House of Commons,” in an op-ed published Sunday in the Toronto Sun.

Local Canadian outlets said the Associated Press identified the 98-year-old in a photo caption as a veteran of the “First Ukrainian Division in World War II,” and noted other outlets described the man as a Ukrainian immigrant to Canada who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians.

The Soviet Union played a pivotal role in defeating Nazi Germany, including during the Battle of Stalingrad, which marked a turning point in the war. The U.S. Department of State outlines on its website that “without the remarkable efforts of the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front, the United States and Great Britain would have been hard pressed to score a decisive military victory over Nazi Germany.”

Parliament special session 2023: Lok Sabha passes Women’s Reservation Bill with 454-2 majority

The bill grants 33 per cent reservation to women in Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies

454 MPs voted in favour of the bill whereas only two were against it.

Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Women’s Reservation Bill. The bill grants 33 per cent reservation to women in Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies, news agency ANI reported. 454 MPs voted in favour of the bill whereas only two were against it.

The constitutional amendment bill, which provides for 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The bill also provides for similar reservation within seats reserved for scheduled caste (SC) and scheduled tribe (ST) candidates. The reservation will continue for 15 years and seats reserved for women will be rotated after each delimitation exercise, according to the bill.

The bill, named Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, will come into effect only after a delimitation exercise of Lok Sabha constituencies is completed. The delimitation exercise will be carried out after the completion of the next population census. Therefore, the bill is unlikely to be in force during the next Lok Sabha election in 2024.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that a census will be carried out to implement the legislation right after the elections. He also said that the government will carry out a delimitation exercise soon after the Lok Sabha elections. The current allotment of seats for states is loosely based on the 1971 Census.

Questioning those who are against the process and timing, Shah said: “1/3rd seats are to be reserved for women MPs, so who will decide those seats? The question is of transparency. No one should take sides.” He also said this was not the first time that the women’s reservation bill was brought.

“This is the fifth attempt to bring the Women’s quota bill. From Devegowda ji to Manmohan Singh ji, four attempts were made to bring this bill…what was the reason this bill was not passed?” he asked.

Meanwhile, earlier on Wednesday, Congress leader said in Lok Sabha that the Women’s Reservation Bill is a “big step” in transfer of power to a section of people in India and pushed for a separate quota for those belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the legislation.

The Congress leader also said that there is no need to wait for the census and delimitation exercise as specified in the bill. “One thing makes this women’s reservation bill incomplete. I would like to have seen the OBC reservation included,” Rahul Gandhi said.

Govt’s Agenda For Special Parliament Session: Discussion On 75 Years Of Parliament, 4 Bills

Special Session Of Parliament: During the session, the government has also listed the bill on the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and other election commissioners to be taken up for consideration and passage.

The government on Wednesday listed a special discussion on Parliament’s journey of 75 years starting from the Samvidhan Sabha on the first day of the five-day session of Parliament beginning September 18. During the session, the government has also listed the bill on the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and other election commissioners to be taken up for consideration and passage. The bill was introduced in Rajya Sabha during the last Monsoon session.

“Discussion on ‘Parliamentary Journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha – Achievements, Experiences, Memories and Learnings'” will be held on September 18 besides other formal business like laying of papers.

The session is likely to see the proceedings of Parliament moving from the old building to the new Parliament building. The other listed business for Lok Sabha includes ‘The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023’ and ‘The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023’, already passed by Rajya Sabha on 3 August 2023.

Besides, ‘The Post Office Bill, 2023’ has also been listed in the Lok Sabha business, according to an official bulletin. The bill was earlier introduced in Rajya Sabha on 10 August 2023. The list of businesses is tentative and more items can be added.

The government has also convened a meeting of the floor leaders of all political parties on September 17, a day before the start of the five-day session, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said. The invitation for the meeting has been sent to all leaders concerned through e-mail, Joshi posted on social media platform X.

On August 31, Joshi announced a “special session” of Parliament for five days from September 18 but did not spell out any specific agenda for it. “Amid Amrit Kaal, looking forward to having fruitful discussions and debate in Parliament,” Joshi had posted on X.

Sharing the agenda for the special Parliament session on X, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said it “is much ado about nothing” and all this could have waited till the Winter session in November, but added that the government could be having “legislative grenades” up its sleeves.

“Finally, after pressure from Sonia Gandhi’s letter to the Prime Minister, the Modi Govt has condescended to announce the agenda for the special 5-day session of Parliament beginning September 18th,” he said.

“The agenda as published at the moment, is much ado about nothing — all this could have waited till the Winter session in November. “I am sure the legislative grenades are being kept up their sleeves to be unleashed at the last moment as usual. Parde ke peeche kuch aur hai! (there is more behind the curtains),” he said on the agenda.

“Regardless, the INDIA parties will steadfastly oppose the insidious CEC Bill,” Ramesh also said. Former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi when no agenda was listed for the session. Ramesh also earlier in the day listed several previous special Parliament sessions and said each time the agenda was listed in advance.

Rahul Gandhi’s flying kiss in Parliament sparks controversy; Check out how internet reacted

Rahul Gandhi blew a flying kiss while leaving the Lok Sabha, sparking controversy and mixed reactions on social media. (PTI)

Rahul Gandhi delivered his first speech at Lok Sabha on August 9 after being reinstated as an MP. However, he didn’t remain in the House to listen to the response, as he had a scheduled event in Rajasthan at 3 pm. Upon departing the Lok Sabha, he repeated a gesture reminiscent of his famous hug and wink during the previous no-confidence motion against the PM Modi government in 2018. It is believed that Rahul Gandhi blew a flying kiss while exiting.

Union Minister Smriti Irani, along with several BJP MPs, voiced their strong objections following an alleged flying kiss gesture made by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi towards BJP MPs in the Lok Sabha. Although the incident was not captured on camera, it reportedly occurred as Rahul Gandhi was leaving the Lok Sabha premises after delivering a speech concerning the no-confidence motion on Manipur.

Smriti Irani, without directly mentioning Rahul Gandhi’s name, denounced the act by stating, “Only a misogynistic man can exhibit the gesture of a flying kiss towards female parliamentarians. This action sheds light on the lineage he originates from and reflects the attitude his family and party hold towards women.” Smriti Irani said that such behaviour had never been witnessed in the country’s Parliament before. BJP has questioned the appropriateness of the behaviour, labeling it as “chichora type behaviour,” as reported by HT.

This parliamentary episode has resonated across major platforms such as TikTok, Twitter, Reddit, Instagram, Telegram, YouTube, and Facebook. Here are some diverse reactions it drew from netizens on these different platforms, while some were hilarious involving memes, the others condemned the act suggesting it to be against the code of conduct in the parliament.

X’s (formerly Twitter) reactions
On Twitter, numerous users have crafted memes that humorously parody the incident, while others have voiced their disapproval of such conduct within the parliamentary arena. Certain individuals have even raised concerns about the appropriateness of such behaviour for an elected representative, fearing that it might compromise the decorum of the esteemed institution.

Canadian lawmakers laugh after Biden accidentally applauds China: ‘You can tell what I’m thinking’

President Biden accidentally commended China instead of Canada while praising the nation’s stance on migration on Friday.

Biden made the gaffe during a speech at the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa while he was discussing U.S. immigration policies.

“In the United States, we’re expanding legal pathways for migration, to seek safety and humanitarian…humanitarian basis, while discouraging unlawful migration that feeds exploitation and human trafficking,” the president began.

“So today, I applaud China for stepping out…excuse me, I applaud Canada,” Biden stumbled while Canadian Members of Parliament laughed.

“You can tell what I’m thinking…about China. I won’t get into that yet,” Biden said. “I applaud Canada’s stepping up of similar programs.”

Biden did not reference China again during his address to Parliament, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau noted China’s competitive edge before Biden began speaking.

“Economic policy is climate policy is security policy, with growing competition, including from an increasingly assertive China,” Trudeau said. “There’s no doubt why it matters that we turn to each other now to build up a North American market on everything from semiconductors to solar panel batteries.”

Biden’s speech comes as tensions between the U.S. and China continue to escalate. Chinese officials threatened the U.S. Navy with “serious consequences” on Friday after an American warship was spotted in the South China Sea.
