Putin holds out possibility that Russia could resume nuclear testing

President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (Oct 5) held out the possibility that Russia could resume nuclear testing for the first time in more than three decades and might withdraw its ratification of a landmark nuclear test ban treaty.

Putin, the ultimate decision maker in the world’s biggest nuclear power, also said Moscow had successfully tested a nuclear-powered and nuclear-capable cruise missile – the Burevestnik – whose capabilities he has called unmatched.

The Kremlin chief said there was no need to change Russia’s nuclear doctrine however, as any attack on Russia would provoke a split-second response with hundreds of nuclear missiles that no enemy could survive.

“Do we need to change this? And why? Everything can be changed but I just don’t see the need for it,” Putin said of the nuclear doctrine – the Kremlin policy setting out the circumstances when Russia might use its weapons.

The existence of the Russian state was not under threat, he added. “I think no person of sound mind and clear memory would think of using nuclear weapons against Russia,” Putin told a meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

“I hear calls to start testing nuclear weapons, to return to testing,” Putin added, referring to suggestions from hardline political scientists and commentators who say such a move could send a powerful message to Moscow’s enemies in the West.

NUCLEAR TEST?
He noted that the United States had signed the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty but not ratified it while Russia had signed and ratified it.

“I am not ready to say whether we really need to conduct tests or not, but it is possible theoretically to behave in the same way as the United States,” Putin said.

“But this is a question for the deputies of the State Duma (lower house of parliament). Theoretically, it is possible to withdraw this ratification. That would be enough,” he said.

He was answering a question from hardline Russian political scientist Sergei Karaganov who wants a tougher nuclear stance. Karaganov asked if Putin should lower the nuclear threshold to sober up Russia’s “insolent” partners.

Inside Russia, some have called for Putin to detonate a nuclear bomb to show the West that Moscow’s patience over its support for Ukraine and apparent unwillingness to negotiate is wearing thin.

Most recently, Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of state-funded broadcaster RT, suggested that Russia should detonate a nuclear bomb over Siberia.

In the five decades between 1945 and the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty, more than 2,000 nuclear tests were carried out, 1,032 of them by the United States and 715 of them by the Soviet Union, according to the United Nations.

The Soviet Union last tested in 1990. The United States last in 1992.

A resumption in nuclear tests by Russia, the United States or both would be profoundly destabilising at a time when tensions between the two countries are greater than at any time since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

In February, Putin suspended Russia’s participation in the New START treaty that limits the number of nuclear weapons each side can deploy.

Putin said on Thursday that Russia had almost finished work on its new generation of Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles, which are capable of carrying 10 or more nuclear warheads.

Vladimir Putin says ‘Indian leadership acting independently’, bashes the West

Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the West of “creating enemies” of countries that were unwilling to “blindly follow” the western elites.

Putin said that the Indian leadership was acting in the interest of the nation | Photo: Reuters

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday said that the Indian leadership was “acting independently in the interest of the nation” as he accused the West of forcing countries to “blindly follow” them.

While speaking at the Valdai International Discussion Club in Sochi, Putin said, “They (the West) are trying to create an enemy out of everyone who is unwilling to blindly follow the western elites. Anyone is at risk, including the People’s Republic of China, and at a certain point, India could become that. The Indian leadership is acting independently in the interest of its nation.”

Putin further said, “They also make an enemy out of the Arab world. They do this selectively. They tried to paint the image of Muslims as hostile.”

Earlier as well, Vladimir Putin had praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his leadership, referring to him as a “very wise man” while speaking at another event.

How China is fighting in the grey zone against Taiwan

Image of fighter Jet pilot flying in the blue sky
China has ramped up military drills such as this one in April where fighter jets flew near Taiwan

China is fighting in the grey zone against Taiwan: When Taiwan raised the alarm last month over a record number of Chinese fighter jets crossing the unofficial border between them, Beijing said that line did not exist.

The 103 fighter jets that China flew near Taiwan – 40 of which entered the island’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) – were yet another escalation in Chinese war games.

Beijing, which has long claimed Taiwan, has in the past year repeatedly rehearsed encircling the self-ruled island with fighter jets and navy ships. The military drills have taken an especially menacing turn in light of China’s vows to “reunite” with Taiwan.

So far, the manoeuvres have fallen short of an invasion and stayed within a grey zone, which is military speak for tactics that fall between war and peace.

But Taiwan is now a tinderbox in what has become a volatile US-China relationship – and analysts say grey zone tactics are part of Beijing’s strategy to control Taipei without firing a single shot.

What is China trying to achieve?
Grey zone warfare tactics are aimed at weakening an adversary over a prolonged period – and that is exactly what China is trying to do with Taiwan, observers say.

By regularly crossing Taiwan’s ADIZ, Beijing is testing how far Taipei will go to reinforce it, says Alessio Patalano, a professor of war and strategy in East Asia at King’s College in London.

The ADIZ is self-declared and technically counts as international airspace, but governments use it to monitor foreign aircraft.

Taiwan has routinely scrambled fighter jets to warn off Chinese aircraft in its ADIZ – a response that can strain Taiwan’s resources in the long run, Prof Patalano said.

But that’s not the only goal – or benefit. For one, the drills allow China to test its own capabilities such as force co-ordination and surveillance, according to analysts. And two they fit China’s pattern of normalising increasing levels of military pressure on Taiwan to test the latter’s defences and international support for the island.

China is fighting in the grey zone against Taiwan
China showed off its J-20 stealth fighter jets in an air show this year

“This normalisation may one day serve to mask the first moves of a real attack, making it difficult for Taiwan and [its chief ally] the United States to prepare accordingly,” said David Gitter, a non-resident fellow at the US-based National Bureau of Asian Research.

Beijing’s moves also reset the baseline to deny Taiwan’s assertion that it has a border with China in the Taiwan Strait, the body of water that lies between the island and the Chinese mainland.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said “there is no so-called median line” in the strait when asked about Taiwan’s reaction to the September drills.

“It also serves to numb Taiwan’s public to the threat posed by such a force, which may undermine political support for a more dedicated Taiwanese military preparation for the possibility of war,” he said.

Most analysts agree that Taiwan’s military – a shrunken army, outnumbered navy and old artillery – would be no match against a far more powerful China. Many Taiwanese seem to agree as well, judging by a survey last year by the Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation which found that a little over half of them think China will win if it goes to war – only a third believe Taiwan will win.

And yet appetite for a larger defence budget appears to be weak. Nearly half of Taiwanese people think the current spend is sufficient while a third think it’s already too much, according to a recent survey by the University of Nottingham.

When does China deploy grey zone tactics?
China often holds military drills in response to high-level political exchanges between Taiwan and the US, which it considers as provocations.

These have grown larger and more frequent since then US Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in August 2022. Beijing responded with week-long drills that included four days of live-fire exercises, followed by anti-submarine attack and sea raid rehearsals.

Then in April, after Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen met then US Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California, China practised “sealing off” Taiwan in so-called joint sword drills with its Shandong aircraft carrier in action.

China even flew jets to Taiwan’s Pacific coast on the east, suggesting that it was practicing strikes from that direction, instead of west, which faces mainland China. Increasingly, China appears to be rehearsing a blockade of Taiwan. But Pentagon officials say it is unlikely to succeed as this would buy time for Taipei’s allies to mobilise themselves.

September’s drills also followed a visit by Taiwan’s vice-president William Lai to the US. Taipei warned of drills after China called Mr Lai, a frontrunner in January’s presidential election, a “troublemaker” for flying to the US.

Some analysts also believe China was trying to project strength following rumours about its missing defence minister Li Shangfu.

The tactics are also not exclusive to the standoff with Taiwan. China employs similar measures to claim almost the entire South China Sea, which could be key to taking control of Taiwan.

The waters host a multi-billion-dollar shipping lane and are believed to hold vast oil and gas reserves. Beijing has built large structures over reefs in disputed waters where Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam and Brunei have rival claims. It has also deployed coast guard and militia ships to block Philippine security and fishing vessels in these waters despite an international tribunal ruling that Beijing’s claims have no legal basis.

Could these grey zone tactics escalate?

The drills have led to an increasingly militarised region – be it in the waters around Taiwan, or in the skies above.

The US and its allies have also stepped up their military exercises in the South China Sea. Just this week, the US and the Philippines kicked off yet another round.

Even if neither side has the intention to provoke, observers fear that the build-up of warships and fighter planes has heightened the chances of a costly miscalculation. The two countries’ militaries also no longer communicate directly – although the US says it is trying to revive the hotline, which would help defuse any unplanned escalation.

WAIL OF DEATH Chilling moment ‘nuke incoming’ sirens sound & schoolkids wear gas masks in war drills as Putin readies Russians for WW3

SIRENS blared out across Russia today and children donned gas masks as part of a terrifying drill for an incoming nuclear attack.

The eerie siren could be heard across the country and chilling messages were broadcast live as Putin forced his citizens to endure a WW3 drill.

Emergency services wrapped up in hazmat suits to carry out protocol as part of Mad Vlad’s terrifying drill
Chilling messages interrupted live broadcasts across the country

Chilling footage even shows schoolchildren being taught how to correctly don gas masks.

Sirens and loudspeakers were sounded in all regions across Russia’s 11 time zones in drills that spawned two days.

It was Russia’s first nationwide civil defence exercise as Putin indoctrinates his people about the danger of the West triggering nuclear war.

A message sounded declaring: “Attention everyone,” as a bone chilling alarm bellowed out in cities and towns everywhere.

Emergency services gathered in hazmat suits to carry out protocol as part of Mad Vlad’s sick exercise.

One group ran from a building with a dummy body on a stretcher accompanied by a pack of dogs.

Heavily armoured and spiked doors also appeared to close off an underground bunker holding officials and Russian police.

Chilling messages were splashed on TV screens as programmes were interrupted.

They read: “Attention, everyone!

“There is a check of readiness of the warning system to the population.

“Please remain calm.”

The same wording boomed out from loudspeakers nationwide.

Firefighters rushed to put out a blaze as ambulances and other teams worked around them during the surreal exercise.

Workers wearing eerie hazmat suits also stuck signs into the ground on the side of the road.

The exercise was based on the assumption of a giant nuclear attack from the West.

The ‘legend’ assumed martial law had been introduced and that Russian had gone through full mobilisation.

In one city Volgograd, two shelters were used as part of the drill.

One could accommodate up to 36,000 people.

“The main goal of the drills is to check our readiness for specific actions,” said emergencies minister Alexander Kurenkov who oversaw the drills.

In a real nuclear war, Vladimir Putin would be calling the shots.

He is known to have multiple nuclear bunkers in his palaces as well as a fleet of ‘Doomsday’ Il-80 Maxdome aircraft for use in the event of atomic war.

It is unclear whether he played any secret role in the drills on Tuesday and today.

In Moscow, alarms were supposed to go off at 10:43am for one minute, although some sounded at night and other residents heard nothing at all.

Many residents in other cities like Novosibirsk and Vladivostok heard nothing.

The emergency alert tests occurred just a few hours after the Russian defence ministry claims to have shot down 31 Ukrainian drones.

In a statement on Telegram, the defence ministry said: “Attempts by the Kyiv regime to carry out terrorist attacks on targets on the territory of the Russian Federation were stopped.”

But Irina Tsukerman, a national security lawyer and geopolitical analyst, told The Express: “Putin is not seriously concerned about possibility of a nuclear or other major scale attack by Nato.

“The practice of martial law is particularly useful as Putin continues to crack down and isolate Russia from external influence.

“In reality, Russia is not preparing for a nuclear attack; it’s preparing for a long-term imposition of internal restrictions, such as martial law.”

The United States is also due to carry out a wide scale check of its public warning systems today – using mobile phones, as well as television and radio channels.

55 aboard China’s nuclear submarine dead, ‘caught in trap for US, allied’ ships, says UK daily

Citing ‘secret UK intel report’, Daily Mail says 21 Aug incident involved 22 officers, 7 officer cadets, 9 petty officers & 17 sailors aboard submarine ‘093-417’. China has denied incident.

As many as 55 Chinese sailors are feared dead as their nuclear submarine got caught in a trap meant for American and allied submarines in the Yellow Sea way back in August, according to a report published Tuesday in the UK’s Daily Mail.

The report, which said, “The onboard oxygen system poisoned the crew after a catastrophic failure”, came weeks after the Chinese military denied such an incident after several social media handles posted about it.

Drawing from what was described as “secret UK report” based on defence intelligence, the Daily Mail claimed the 21 August incident involved 22 officers, seven officer cadets, nine petty officers and 17 sailors aboard the Chinese PLA Navy Submarine, ‘093-417’.

‘Our understanding is death caused by hypoxia due to a system fault on the submarine. The submarine hit a chain and anchor obstacle used by the Chinese Navy to trap US and allied submarines,” it quoted the report as saying.

‘Empire of lies’: Russia’s Lavrov slams West in UN speech

Russia’s foreign minister glosses over Ukraine, accuses Western allies of neo-colonialism at the UN General Assembly.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called the West an “empire of lies” and accused it of adopting a neo-colonial mindset in its overtures to the Global South to win backing for Ukraine in the war.

Speaking after a week of intense global diplomacy at the annual gathering of world leaders at UN headquarters in New York, where Ukraine and its Western allies sought to drum up support for Kyiv as it fights against Russia’s invasion, Lavrov said a “global majority” was being duped by the West.

“The US and its subordinated collective continue to fuel conflicts which artificially divide humanity into hostile blocks and hamper the achievement of overall aims,” Lavrov said.

“They are trying to force the world to play according to their own self-centred rules.”

James Bays, Al Jazeera’s diplomatic correspondent, said Lavrov’s speech was part of a “tour around the world of Russia’s views” that contained no real mention of Ukraine and few indications of Moscow’s plan one year into the conflict.

During a news conference following the speech, the foreign minister dismissed a 10-point proposal put forward by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as the latest UN proposals to revive the Black Sea grain initiative.

“It is completely not feasible,” he said of the peace blueprint promoted by Kyiv. “It is not possible to implement this. It’s not realistic and everybody understands this, but at the same time, they say this is the only basis for negotiations.”

He also said the UN proposal would not fly because the West did not deliver on its promises to Moscow, including removing sanctions on a Russian bank and reconnecting it to the global SWIFT system.

Prachanda in China, says Nepal is ready to take BRI project further

Prachanda’s assurances to Xi, covered widely by the Chinese press, were in contrast to speculation he would ask Beijing to build the BRI projects in Nepal under a grant mechanism, which would allay fears that the project will push Nepal into a debt trap.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda

Nepal will continue to actively participate in China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda has said, laying to rest speculation that he would push Beijing for measures to safeguard Nepal from falling into a debt trap.

Prachanda, who flew to Hangzhou from New York to witness the inaugural session of the Asian Games, has told Chinese President Xi Jinping that his government will further promote the Trans-Himalayan network as it will “greatly assist” Nepal’s national economic development. The Trans-Himalayan network, an economic corridor between Nepal and China, is part of the BRI.

After persuading the West to accept the G20 Delhi Declaration without a word of condemnation for Russia for its military aggression against Ukraine, India has joined the United States, Japan and Australia to tacitly ask Russia to refrain from clinching any arms transfer deal with North Korea.

The foreign ministers of Quad – a four-nation coalition comprising India, Japan, Australia and the United States – sent out a message to Russia, urging all member states of the United States to abide by the Security Council resolutions prohibiting “the transfer to North Korea or procurement from North Korea of all arms and related materiel”.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar joined his Japanese, Australian and American counterparts, Yoko Kamikawa, Penny Wong and Antony Blinken, for a meeting of the Quad on the sideline of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Zelenskiy calls for Russia to lose its veto power at UN Security Council

Ukrainian President Zelenskiy and Russian Ambassador Nebenzia clashed at a UN Security Council meeting on Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Albanian Prime Minister Rama made a sarcastic remark, and Zelenskiy called for Russia to be stripped of its veto right.

It was Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskiy’s first in-person appearance at a UN Security Council meeting on Moscow’s invasion of his country when Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia objected to him taking the floor at the start of the meeting, according to Reuters reports.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama responded with a gibe at Moscow, which has long said the invasion does not amount to war but was a mere “special military operation”.

“I want to assure our Russian colleagues and everyone here that this is not a special operation by the Albanian presidency,” Rama, known for a piercing sense of humor, said to muted laughter across the room, Reuters reported.

Addressing Nebenzia directly at the meeting, Rama said, “There is a solution for this. If you agree, you stop the war and President Zelenskiy will not take the floor.”

However, Nebenzia did not agree and went on to say the session was a show. He criticized Rama for what he said was making politically charged statements rather than acting as a neutral guardian of procedure.

After the session, the Ukrainian PM expressed gratitude to Rama on social media, saying the Albanian showed the world how to correctly handle Russia along with its lies and hypocrisy.

Azerbaijan claims full control over the Nagorno-Karabakh region as Armenian forces agree to disarm

Azerbaijan claimed full control of the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region Wednesday after local Armenian forces there agreed to lay down their weapons following the latest outbreak of fighting in the decades-long separatist conflict.

Authorities in the ethnic Armenian region that has run its affairs without international recognition since fighting broke out in the early 1990s declared around midday that local self-defense forces will disarm and disband under a Russia-mediated cease-fire.

They also said representatives of the region will start talks Thursday with the Baku government on Nagorno-Karabakh’s “reintegration” into Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev trumpeted victory in a televised address to the nation, saying that “in just one day, Azerbaijan fulfilled all the tasks set as part of local anti-terrorist measures” and “restored its sovereignty.”

On Tuesday, the Azerbaijan army unleashed an artillery barrage and drone attacks against outnumbered and undersupplied pro-Armenian forces, which have been weakened by a blockade of the region in the southern Caucasus Mountains that is recognized internationally as being part of Azerbaijan.

Nagorno-Karabakh human rights ombudsman Gegham Stepanyan said at least 200 people, including 10 civilians, were killed and more than 400 others were wounded in the fighting. He said earlier that children were among the dead and wounded.

His casualty figures could not immediately be independently verified.

The hostilities worsened an already grim humanitarian situation for residents who have endured food and medicine shortages for months as Azerbaijan enforced a blockade of the road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia.

Thousands of Nagorno-Karabakh residents flocked to a camp operated by Russian peacekeepers to avoid the fighting, while many others gathered at the airport of the regional capital, Stepanakert, hoping to flee the region.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in a speech to the nation that fighting decreased following the truce, emphasizing that Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh are fully responsible for its residents security.

“If peacekeepers have proposed a peace deal, it means that they completely and without any reservations accepted the responsibility of ensuring the security of Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians, and provide the conditions and the rights for them to live on their land and in their homes safely,” he said.

Pashinyan, who has previously recognized Azerbaijan’s sovereignty over Nagorno-Karabakh, said Armenia wouldn’t be drawn into the fighting. He said his government didn’t take part in negotiating the deal, but “has taken note” of the decision made by the region’s separatist authorities.

He again denied any Armenian troops were in the region, even though separatist authorities said they were in Nagorno-Karabakh and would pull out as part of the truce.

Protesters rallied in the Armenian capital of Yerevan for a second straight day Wednesday, blocking streets and demanding that authorities defend Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby said the U.S. was “deeply concerned” about Azerbaijan’s military actions. “We have repeatedly emphasized the use of force is absolutely unacceptable,” he said, adding that the U.S. was closely watching the worsening humanitarian situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. And the U.N. Security Council scheduled an urgent meeting Thursday on the Azerbaijani offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh at the request of France.

Azerbaijan’s move to reclaim control over Nagorno-Karabakh raised concerns that a full-scale war in the region could resume between the two neighbors, which have been locked in a struggle over Nagorno-Karabakh since a separatist war there ended in 1994.

During another war that lasted for six weeks in 2020, Azerbaijan reclaimed broad swaths of Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent territories that were held for decades by Armenian forces. More than 6,700 people died in the fighting, which ended with a Russian-brokered peace agreement. Moscow deployed about 2,000 peacekeeping troops to the region.

The conflict has long drawn in powerful regional players, including Russia and Turkey. While Russia took on the mediating role, Turkey threw its weight behind longtime ally Azerbaijan.

Russia has been Armenia’s main economic partner and ally since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union and has a military base in the country.

Pashinyan, however, has been increasingly critical of Moscow’s role, emphasizing its failure to protect Nagorno-Karabakh and arguing that Armenia needs to turn to the West to ensure its security. Moscow, in turn, has expressed dismay about Pashinyan’s pro-Western tilt.

The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with Pashinyan on Wednesday, welcoming the deal to end the hostilities and start talks between Azerbaijani officials and representatives of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said some of its peacekeepers were killed Wednesday, although it didn’t say how many and whether it happened before or after the start of the cease-fire. The ministry said the peacekeeping contingent had evacuated more than 3,100 civilians.

Ukraine, Russia and the tense UN encounter that almost happened — but didn’t

It was a moment the diplomatic world was watching for — but didn’t get.

In the end, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov avoided staring each other down Wednesday across the U.N. Security Council’s famous horseshoe-shaped table. Zelenskyy left before Lavrov arrived.

The near-miss was somewhat to be expected. Yet the moment still spoke to the U.N.’s role as a venue where warring nations can unleash their ire through words instead of weapons. The choreography also underscored the world body’s reputation as a place where adversaries sometimes literally talk past each other.

Zelenskyy denounced Russia as “a terrorist state” while Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia sat facing him near the other end of the table’s arc. As Zelenskyy launched into his remarks, the Russian looked at his phone, then tucked the device away.

Zelenskyy left before Lavrov’s arrival, which came as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was accusing Russia of having “shredded” key provisions of the U.N. Charter.

Lavrov, in turn, reiterated his country’s claims that Kyiv has oppressed Russian speakers in eastern areas, violating the U.N. charter and getting a pass on it from the U.S. and other western countries. Across the table was Ukrainian Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya, his eyes on his phone during at least parts of Lavrov’s remarks. (Blinken, for his part, took handwritten notes.)

If there was no finger-pointing face-off, the atmosphere was decidedly prickly.

Before Zelenskyy’s arrival, Nebenzia objected to a speaking order that put the Ukrainian president before the council’s members, including Russia. (Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, the meeting chair, retorted: “You stop the war, and President Zelenskyy will not take the floor.”)

Zelenskyy had been in the same room, but hardly eye to eye, with a Russian diplomat during the Ukrainian leader’s speech Tuesday in the vast hall of the U.N. General Assembly, which this week is holding its annual meeting of top-level leaders. (Russian Deputy Ambassador Dmitry Polyansky later said, wryly, that he’d been focusing on his phone and “didn’t notice” Zelenskyy’s address.) Before that, Zelenskyy last encountered a Russian official at a 2019 meeting with President Vladimir Putin.

Poland to stop supplying weapons to Ukraine over grain row

TOMASZ GZELL/EPA-EFE/REX/SHUTTERSTOCK

One of Ukraine’s staunchest allies, Poland, has announced it will no longer supply weapons to the country as a diplomatic dispute over grain escalates.

The nation’s prime minister said it would instead focus on arming itself with more modern weapons.

The move comes as tensions between the two nations rise.

On Tuesday, Poland summoned Ukraine’s ambassador over comments made by President Volodymyr Zelensky at the UN.

He said some nations had feigned solidarity with Ukraine, which Warsaw denounced as “unjustified concerning Poland, which has supported Ukraine since the first days of the war”.

Poland’s prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, announced the decision to no longer supply Ukraine with weapons in a televised address on Wednesday after a day of rapidly escalating tensions between the two countries over grain imports.

The grain dispute began after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine all but closed the main Black Sea shipping lanes and forced Ukraine to find alternative overland routes.

That in turn led to large quantities of grain ending up in central Europe.

Consequently, the European Union temporarily banned imports of grain into five countries; Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia to protect local farmers, who feared Ukrainian grain was driving down the prices locally.

The ban ended on 15 September and the EU chose not to renew it, but Hungary, Slovakia and Poland decided to keep on implementing it.

The European Commission has repeatedly stated that it is not up to individual EU members to make trade policy for the bloc.

Earlier this week, Ukraine filed lawsuits to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) against those countries over the bans, which it said were a violation of international obligations.

Ukraine’s Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said that “it is crucially important for us to prove that individual member states cannot ban imports of Ukrainian goods”.

But Poland said they would keep the ban in place, and a “complaint before the WTO doesn’t impress us”.

‘Stop the war’ and Zelenskiy need not speak, UN Security Council chair tells Russia

It was to be Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskiy’s first in-person appearance at a U.N. Security Council meeting on Moscow’s invasion of his country when Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia objected to him taking the floor at the start of the meeting.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, serving as president of the tense session, responded with a gibe at Moscow, which has long said the invasion does not amount to a war but was a mere “special military operation”.

“I want to assure our Russian colleagues and everyone here that this is not a special operation by the Albanian presidency,” Rama, known for a piercing sense of humor, said to muted laughter across the room.

“There is a solution for this,” Rama continued, addressing Nebenzia directly: “If you agree, you stop the war and President Zelenskiy will not take the floor.”

Nebenzia did not agree. He went on to say the session was a show and criticized Rama for what he said was making politically charged statements rather than acting as a neutral guardian of procedure.

After the session, Zelenskiy thanked Rama on social media, saying the Albanian, who is both an artist and former basketball player, “showed the world how to correctly handle Russia, its lies, and its hypocrisy.”

In seeking to justify its invasion, Moscow has said Ukraine’s ambitions to integrate with the West – including NATO – pose a threat to Russia’s national security, an assertion that Kyiv and its allies deny as a baseless pretext to attack.

When given the floor after the back-and-forth, Zelenskiy asked Russia be stripped of its veto right as one of five permanent members of the post-World War Two U.N. Security Council as punishment for attacking Ukraine.

Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in a US television interview that his country was moving steadily closer to normalizing relations with Israel and also warned that if Iran gets a nuclear weapon, “we have to get one.”

“Every day we get closer,” the crown prince told Fox News in wide-ranging remarks broadcast on Wednesday, when asked to characterize talks aimed at long-time foes Israel and Saudi Arabia reaching a landmark agreement to open diplomatic relations.

The conservative US network’s interview with the crown prince, widely known as MbS, comes as President Joe Biden’s administration presses ahead with an effort to broker historic ties between the two regional powerhouses, Washington’s top Middle East allies.

The normalization talks are the centerpiece of complex negotiations that also include discussions of US security guarantees and civilian nuclear help that Riyadh has sought, as well as possible Israeli concessions to the Palestinians.

“For us, the Palestinian issue is very important. We need to solve that part,” MbS, Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler, said when asked what it would take to get a normalization agreement. “And we have a good negotiations strategy til now.”

Pakistan Continues To Expand Nuclear Arsenal Amid Dire Economic Crisis: Report

A report has said that Pakistan has continued to “expand its nuclear arsenal with more warheads” even as its citizens suffer through a cash-strapped economy.

Pakistan continues to expand its nuclear arsenal with more warheads even as the nation’s citizens suffer in a broken economy amid cash woes, reveals a report | Image: X/AP

Despite its dire economic circumstances, cash-strapped Pakistan continues to pursue its ambitions of expanding its nuclear arsenal. A recent research report by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists raises alarms about this development, stating, “Pakistan continues to gradually expand its nuclear arsenal with more warheads, more delivery systems, and a growing fissile material production industry.”

Pakistan, a nation grappling with a severe economic downturn, is facing widespread protests driven by soaring fuel prices and exorbitant power bills. The situation has reached a critical point, with petrol prices reaching an all-time high of PKR 300 per litre, and many cities experiencing prolonged power outages.

Desperate for financial relief, Pakistan sought assistance from China and Gulf nations on multiple occasions. However, in a significant turn of events, Pakistan reluctantly agreed to stringent conditions imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in exchange for a bailout.

Taiwan reports 28 Chinese air force planes in its air defence zone

Taiwan’s defence ministry said it spotted 28 Chinese air force planes in its air defence zone on Wednesday morning, part of what Taipei calls regular harassment by Beijing amid heightened tensions across the Taiwan Strait.

Democratically-governed Taiwan, which China views as its own territory, has complained in recent years of stepped-up Chinese military activities near the island as Beijing seeks to assert its sovereignty claims.

Taiwan’s defence ministry said that beginning at around 6 a.m. (2200 GMT Tuesday), Chinese warplanes, including J-10 fighters, had flown into the southwestern corner of the island’s air defence identification zone, or ADIZ.

Some of the Chinese aircraft crossed the Bashi Channel to carry out drills with the Chinese aircraft carrier the Shandong in the Pacific, the ministry added.

China’s defence ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Taiwan’s forces monitored the situation, including sending up its own air force planes and activating air defence systems, the ministry added, using the normal phrasing for its response to such Chinese incursions.

A Chinese naval formation led by the Shandong entered the western Pacific for training, Taiwan’s defence ministry said on Monday.

Japan’s defence ministry later said its Maritime Self-Defense Force had spotted the Shandong and five accompanying Chinese navy vessels, including two frigates and two missile destroyers, around 650 km south (400 miles) off Japan’s southwestern Miyako island on Wednesday morning.

Biden meets Li Qiang, says China economic ‘crisis’ makes Taiwan invasion less likely

U.S. President Joe Biden said on Sunday he held his highest level talks with Chinese leadership in months, adding that Beijing’s economic wobbles would not lead it to invade Taiwan.

Biden said he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s No.2, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, at the annual G20 summit in New Delhi. The talks were the highest level meeting between the two powers in nearly 10 months since Biden and Xi spoke at last year’s G20 in Indonesia.

Li, who took became premier in March, attended the gathering of world leaders in place of Xi. The two leaders were not expected to hold talks at the G20 but unscripted encounters at summits are common.

“My team, my staff still meets with President Xi’s people and his cabinet,” Biden told reporters. “I met with his No.2 person in India today.”

He added: “We talked about stability,” and the Southern Hemisphere. “It wasn’t confrontational at all.”

The White House on Sunday said Biden had met with a Chinese leader at the summit.

The two super powers have been trying to thaw frosty relations this year after a spat over a suspected Chinese spy balloon that flew over U.S. territory, while fears of an economic slowdown have gripped Beijing.

Speaking at a press conference in Vietnam, Biden touted the U.S. economy as the “strongest” globally. He told reporters that China’s growth was slowing due to a weak global economy as well as Chinese policies but did not specify which policies.

Biden called China’s economic situation a “crisis,” citing issues in the real estate sector and high youth unemployment.

“One of the major economic tenets of his plan isn’t working at all right now,” Biden said of Xi, without elaborating. “I’m not happy for that, but it’s not working.”

Biden added: “He has his hands full right now.”

The Democratic president is headed into a 2024 re-election campaign where his own handling of the economy and inflation has become a central concern for voters.

The U.S. economy grew at a 2.1% annualised rate last quarter. Central bankers have sharply raised interest rates to bring inflation back down to target levels.

Russian Newspaper tears into Western media for condemning India for its G20 preparedness.
While India’s G20 Presidency has been praised worldwide, Western nations have been pushing for strong condemnation in the G20 New Delhi Declaration and criticised India for its preparedness, on which, Russia, which has always backed India owing to its friendship, gave a befitting reply.

The Russian Times asserted that India made world-class arrangements for the G20 Summit. It said that there can be minor flaws but the arrangements are worthy to be applauded.

The Russian Times (RT), while targeting the Western media, has said that India is hosting the G20, the organization of the world’s largest economies, for the first time in a grand manner. But the Western media is not focusing on these things and is publishing only negative news. “This is very unfortunate.”

In particular, Western journalists highlighted the beautification campaign carried out by Indian authorities to remove slums ahead of the summit. The Russian Times has argued that the Western media failed to acknowledge the hard work put in by Indian officials to ensure the success of the G20 Summit. The Russian Times also criticized Western journalists for their tendency to only seek out negative stories during the G20 summit.

At G20, Italy Tells China It Plans To Exit Belt And Road Project: Report

Italy PM Meloni told the Chinese Premier that Italy plans to withdraw from Xi Jinping’s signature Belt and Road Initiative

Italian PM Meloni spoke to the Chinese premier during the G20 summit in Delhi

Giorgia Meloni privately signalled to Chinese Premier Li Qiang that Italy is planning to exit from an investment pact that has become a test of her nation’s relations with the US.
During a meeting on Saturday on the sidelines of a Group of 20 summit in India, Meloni told Li that Italy plans to withdraw from Chinese President Xi Jinping’s signature Belt and Road Initiative while still looking to maintain friendly relations with Beijing, according to a person familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named. Italy officially signed up for the pact in 2019.

The Italian prime minister has been taking her time before deciding how to communicate her government’s decision to exit from the global infrastructure pact, fearing trade retaliation.

US and Vietnam ink historic partnership in Biden visit, with eyes on China

U.S. President Joe Biden on Sunday secured deals with Vietnam on semiconductors and minerals as the strategic Southeast Asian nation lifted Washington to Hanoi’s highest diplomatic status alongside China and Russia.

The U.S. has been pushing for the upgrade for months as it sees the manufacturing dynamo as a key country in its strategy to secure global supply chains from China-related risks.

A half-century after a lengthy and brutal Cold War-era conflict, Biden arrived in Hanoi to a ceremony organised by the ruling Communist Party that included school children waving American flags and honour guards carrying bayoneted rifles.

Biden noted the strides that had been taken toward improved ties.

“We can trace a 50-year arc of progress between our nations, from conflict to normalization, to this new elevated status,” he said.

The partnership with Vietnam is part of the Biden administration’s push “to demonstrate to our our Indo-Pacific partners and to the world, the United States is a Pacific nation and we’re not going anywhere,” Biden told reporters after the meeting in Hanoi.

India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor: An answer to China’s belt and road

The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor is expected to attract additional Asian countries, boosting manufacturing, food security, and supply chains within its sphere of influence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed it as “a testament to human endeavor and unity across continents,” while US President Joe Biden deemed it “a real big deal.” Leaders from India, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, France, Germany, Italy, and the European Union have jointly unveiled a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that directly challenges China’s expansive Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which seeks to establish trade and infrastructure networks connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa.

As the BRI marks its 10th anniversary, many view it as a tool for China to exert influence over developing nations, often resulting in debt traps. For Chinese President Xi Jinping, the announcement of the new India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, which also involves Israel and Jordan, comes at an inopportune moment. Data reveals that the value of new foreign contracted projects under the BRI has stagnated since its peak in 2019, coinciding with China’s domestic real estate debt crisis.

A noteworthy shift in the global order was evident at the G20, with Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni’s participation, signaling Italy’s inclination to abandon the BRI. Italy had been the first G7 country to join Xi Jinping’s ambitious project in 2019.

Following the announcement, President Biden remarked, “The world stands at an inflection point in history. A point where decisions we make today are going to affect the course of our future—all of our futures for decades to come. A point where our investments are more critical than ever.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday conveyed to his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau India’s strong concerns about the continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada that were promoting secessionism, inciting violence against its diplomats and threatening the Indian community there.

In his talks with Trudeau on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, Modi also mentioned that a relationship based on ‘mutual respect and trust’ is essential for the progress of the India-Canada relationship, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

‘The prime minister highlighted that India-Canada relations are anchored in shared democratic values, respect for rule of law and strong people-to-people ties,’ it said.

‘He conveyed our strong concerns about continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan backed India as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and proposed a ‘rotational’ membership mechanism. Addressing the media after the G20 Summit on Sunday, the senior politician noted that the world was ‘larger than five’. The remarks came mere hours after US President Joe Biden reaffirmed his support for a reformed UNSC with India as a permanent member.

“A country like India being there on the UN Security Council, we would be proud. But as you now, the world is bigger than larger than five. And when we say the world is larger than five, what we mean is that it’s not only about the US, UK, France, China and Russia…What we say is all of them, we should only have permanent members,” Erdogan said.

He also called for a ‘rotational system’ that would see all 195 member countries potentially becoming a member.

North Korea unveils first tactical, nuclear-armed submarine

North Korea has launched its first operational “tactical nuclear attack submarine” and assigned it to the fleet that patrols the waters between the Korean peninsula and Japan, state media said on Friday.

Submarine No. 841 – named Hero Kim Kun Ok after a North Korean historical figure – will be one of the main “underwater offensive means of the naval force” of North Korea, leader Kim Jong Un said at the launch ceremony on Wednesday.

Analysts said the vessel appears to be a modified Soviet-era Romeo-class submarine, which North Korea acquired from China in the 1970s and began producing domestically. Its design, with 10 launch tube hatches, showed it was most likely armed with ballistic missiles and cruise missiles, analysts said.

But such weapons won’t add much value to the North’s more robust land-based nuclear forces, because its submarines may not survive as long during a war, said Vann Van Diepen, a former U.S. government weapons expert who works with the 38 North project in Washington.

“When this thing is field deployed, it’s going to be quite vulnerable to allied anti-submarine warfare,” he said. “So I think from a sort of hard-headed military standpoint this doesn’t make a lot of sense.”

South Korea’s military said that the submarine didn’t appear ready for normal operations, and that there were signs North Korea was attempting to exaggerate its capabilities.

At the launch ceremony, Kim said arming the navy with nuclear weapons was an urgent task and promised more underwater and surface vessels equipped with tactical nuclear weapons for the naval forces, news agency KCNA reported.

“The submarine-launching ceremony heralded the beginning of a new chapter for bolstering up the naval force of the DPRK,” KCNA said, using the initials of the North’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

North Korea plans to turn other existing submarines into nuclear armed vessels, and accelerate its push to eventually build nuclear-powered submarines, Kim said.

“Achieving a rapid development of our naval forces … is a priority that cannot be delayed given … the enemies’ recent aggressive moves and military acts,” the North Korean leader said in a speech, apparently referring to the United States and South Korea.

North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs are banned by United Nations Security Council resolutions, and the submarine launch drew condemnation from South Korea and Japan.

“North Korea’s military activity is posing graver and more imminent threat to our country’s security than before,” Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told a briefing.

North Korea fired several cruise missiles towards the Yellow Sea in the early hours of Saturday, according to the South Korean military.

Details of the launch were being analysed by South Korean and US intelligence authorities, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

It was the latest in a series of missile tests and military exercises conducted by the North in recent weeks, including a failed spy satellite launch late last month.

Seoul announced sanctions on Friday on five North Korean individuals and one company in response to Pyongyang’s launch of what it said was a space rocket last month.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday denied ultra-Orthodox reports he was preparing for the collapse of his government in return for a US-backed normalization deal with Saudi Arabia.

According to a report published in the Agudat Yisrael-affiliated haredi paper HaModia on Friday morning, Netanyahu had resigned to the fact that “his political career is nearing an end.”

Netanyahu, in accordance with White House officials, will receive the long-awaited Saudi normalization deal and plea bargain for his criminal trials for his resignation, with the understanding being that he “does not have the capacity to manage the country in Israel’s current political state,” as per the report.

Russia warns of blocking G20 declaration if its views are ignored

Lavrov, who has served as President Vladimir Putin’s foreign minister since 2004, is due to represent Russia at the Sept. 9-10 meetof the Group of 20 countries.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov(AP)

Russia will block the final declaration of this month’s G20 summit unless it reflects Moscow’s position on Ukraine and other crises, leaving participants to issue a non-binding or partial communique, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday.

Lavrov, who has served as President Vladimir Putin’s foreign minister since 2004, is due to represent Russia at the Sept. 9-10 meeting of the Group of 20 leading industrialised and developing countries in New Delhi.

Putin is not known to have travelled abroad since the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for him in March on suspicion of war crimes in Ukraine.

“There will be no general declaration on behalf of all members if our position is not reflected,” Lavrov told students at the prestigious Moscow State Institute of International Relations.

The Kremlin casts the Ukraine war, which began when Russia invaded in February 2022, as an existential battle with an arrogant West that Putin says wants to dismantle Russia and take control of its vast natural resources.

Wild video shows bird’s-eye-view of Ukraine drone ‘delivering explosive gift,’ destroying Russian truck

Thrilling video captures the moment a Ukrainian soldier skillfully lands a “kamikaze drone” inside an encroaching Russian truck just seconds before detonating a deadly explosion.

The split-screen footage shows both the “Steel Border” unit operator and his vantage point as he chases down the enemy vehicle driving over the border toward Kharkiv, a city that has become a major target of Moscow’s offensive attacks.

“Come on, come on, come on,” the soldier outfitted in camouflage military garb and FPV (First Person View) drone goggles can be heard muttering in Ukrainian.

Within seconds, the aerial bot descends from the sky and zips into the small opening in the back of what the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine identified as a Russian-produced UAZ military truck.

The solider flew a kamikaze drone equipped with a grenade launcher into the back of a Russian truck.

The kamikaze drone’s camera instantly went black — presumably due to the violent explosion from the grenade launcher attached to its back that destroyed the drone and its enemies at once.

The soldiers gleefully cheered at their success in protecting their border.

  1. Bakhmut: Ukrainian forces continued advancing south of the Russian-controlled city of Bakhmut in the east, with the enemy trying to hold back the advance and restore its lost positions in the Orikhovo-Vasylivka and Klishchiivka districts. So far, Ukraine was said to have liberated nearly 17 square miles of territory in the area.
  2. Lyman: In the Lyman direction in the east, Russians were reportedly regrouping troops and attacking Ukrainian positions around the towns of Kreminna, Belogorivka and Novoyehorivka.
  3. Avdiivka: In the Avdiivka direction in western Donetsk, Russians attacked multiple settlements with artillery fire and mortar shells in a bid to take complete control of the area, but Moscow’s forces did not make confirmed advances.
  4. Mariinka: Ukrainian defenders were said to have continued suppressing the advance of enemy troops in the area of Mariinka, Dontesk region, where at least four villages were shelled.
  5. Zaporizhzhia: Kyiv’s army advanced about 3 miles southeast of the strategically important settlement of Robotyne in western Zaporizhzhia region, which had been liberated this week. Ukrainians were shoring up their positions and demining the area, which is a getaway to Tokmak — an important Russian-occupied rail hub.

North Korea stages tactical nuclear strike drill to protest allied exercises

North Korea conducted a simulated “scorched-earth” nuclear strike on targets across South Korea, state media reported on Thursday (Aug 31), in reaction to allied exercises that it said amounted to plans for a preemptive nuclear attack by the United States.

The missile unit fired two ballistic missiles and correctly carried out its “nuclear strike mission”, the General Staff of the North’s Korean People’s Army (KPA) said in a statement carried by the news agency KCNA.

“The KPA staged a tactical nuclear strike drill simulating scorched-earth strikes at major command centres and operational airfields of the ‘ROK’ military gangsters on Wednesday night,” it said, using initials of South Korea’s official name, the Republic of Korea.

North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea on Wednesday, South Korea’s military said, hours after the US deployed B-1B bombers for allied air drills.

The latest launch came a day before South Korea and the US wrap up 11 days of combined military drills, which Pyongyang has long denounced as a war rehearsal.

New U.S. intelligence shows North Korea and Russia are “actively advancing” high-level talks for additional weapons and other materials to assist Moscow’s brutal war in Ukraine, the Biden administration disclosed on Wednesday.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu recently traveled to North Korea to try to secure additional artillery ammunition, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters. Since that visit, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un have exchanged letters pledging to increase their cooperation.

Also after Shoigu’s visit, another group of Russian officials traveled to Pyongyang for follow-up discussions about potential arms deals between the two nations, Kirby said. Under the potential agreements, North Korea would ship Russia “significant quantities and multiple types” of weapons for use in Ukraine, he said.

The potential deals also include the provision of raw materials that could help boost Russia’s military manufacturing capability, Kirby said.

Security Council resolutions,” Kirby said, referring to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the country’s official name. “We’re continuing to monitor this situation closely. And we urge the DPRK to cease its arms negotiations with Russia and abide by the public commitments that Pyongyang has made to not provide or sell arms to Russia.”

The alleged arms talks come as Russia’s full-scale war on Ukraine drags on with no end in sight. A Ukrainian counteroffensive has failed to make major breakthroughs, despite ample military support from the West. Both Russia and Ukraine are burning through ammunition and seeking any edge they can in a bid to gain a permanent upper hand.

The Russian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Kirby declined to describe how the United States had obtained the information, citing the importance of protecting sources and methods used. Still, it was the latest example of the Biden administration publicly disclosing intelligence in a bid to stay ahead of Moscow as it has pursued its war on Ukraine.

Kirby said the fact that Putin was approaching a country like North Korea, one of the most isolated on the planet, was a sign of Putin’s desperation, even as he acknowledged it was not clear how long Russia would continue to wage war.

China ramps up construction of bunkers, underground facilities near LAC, reveal satellite images: Report

China’s inclusion of Arunachal Pradesh, and Aksai Chin in its ‘standard map’ has escalated tensions with India, as satellite images reveal increased construction in the Aksai Chin region.

China’s latest move of including Arunachal Pradesh, and Aksai Chin in its 2023 version ‘standard map’ has riled up the already broken diplomatic and military relations between India and China. This also comes on days after India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and China’s Premiere Xi Jinping held talks on the side lines of the BRICS summit in Johannesburg in South Africa. After the meet, news report said that both leaders had directed defence administration to reach a solution on the Line of Actual Control dispute between China’s People’s Liberation Army, and Indian Army.

On a day China’s new ‘standard map’ came to limelight, satellite images have revealed that Beijing has ramped up construction of reinforced personnel bunkers and underground facilities in Aksai Chin, according to a Hindustan Times report.

The Aksai Chin is the part China occupied during the 1962 Sino-Indian war.

Map controversy casts shadow on Xi Jinping’s India visit for G20 summit

By releasing the so-called standard map of China, Beijing wants to teach India a lesson for rejecting normalization of ties until border issues are sorted out.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping.

On the eve of India hosting the G20 summit in New Delhi, China released a so-called “standard map” coopting parts of eastern Ladakh as per the rejected 1959 line and Arunachal Pradesh in the Middle Kingdom apart from Taiwan and the South China Sea.

This cartographic expansion by Beijing duly amplified by Chinese propaganda through social media was immediately rebutted and rejected by the Modi government as Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India and parts of Aksai Chin were occupied by Mao’s China in the 1950s even before the disastrous 1962 war. While India was signing the Panchsheel Agreement in 1954, China was building a highway linking occupied Tibet with occupied Sinkiang (called Xinjiang) through Aksai Chin with the then government rather oblivious to the facts.

The timing of the release of the map by China clearly has ominous portends as it poses serious questions on whether President Xi Jinping is inclined to attend the G20 summit in the Indian capital or has other plans. We are told that China releases the standard map every year but it is the first time that India has lodged a serious protest with Beijing, rejecting the territorial claims of the Middle Kingdom.

The larger question is why did Beijing release the so-called standard map and get it amplified by its propaganda media through social media platforms ? The answer lies in the recently concluded BRICS summit in Johannesburg, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a brief interaction with President Xi Jinping at the leaders’ lounge of the summit. It is understood that China wanted a bilateral meeting with India on the sidelines of the summit and push for normalization of ties without conceding an inch on the pending problems of Depsang Bulge and Demchok in Eastern Ladakh. Given the schedule restraints of PM Modi, the formal meeting between the two leaders could not take place and was limited to a brief interaction only. Even during the brief interaction, PM Modi raised his concerns over the border issue, clearly indicating that the road to normalization of ties goes through disengagement and de-escalation on the East Ladakh border and resolution of the remaining two friction points.

Ukrainian drones attack Russian airport in large-scale raid on six regions

Kyiv officials say 2 people killed, one wounded in largest Russian missile and drone raid on Ukraine’s capital in months.

Russia said that Ukraine launched drones against targets in six Russian regions, including an attack on an airport in the western city of Pskov – located near the borders of Latvia and Estonia – where military transport aircraft were reported damaged amid explosions and a huge fire.

In what could be the biggest drone attack on Russian territory since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year, Russia’s defence ministry said on Wednesday morning that drones were also shot down over the regions of Orlov, Bryansk, Ryazan, Kaluga and the Moscow region surrounding the Russian capital.

Russian also launched a missile and drone attack against Kyiv on Wednesday morning that was described as the “most powerful strike” on the Ukrainian capital in months, leaving two people dead and one wounded, the city’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

Ukrainian air defences destroyed more than 20 missiles and drones involved in the attack and two security guards were killed by falling debris, according to authorities.

“Kyiv had not experienced such a powerful attack since spring… In total, more than 20 enemy targets were destroyed by air defence forces,” the Kyiv City Military Administration wrote on Telegram.

Russian state news agency TASS, quoting emergency services, said earlier on Wednesday that four Il-76 heavy transport aircraft, which have long been the workhorse of the Russian military, were damaged at an airfield in Russia’s western Pskov region, located roughly 660km (some 411 miles) north of Ukrainian border.

Ukraine says Russia is ‘sinking ships’ to protect Crimean bridge – here’s what we found

Satellite images appear to show six “sunk” vessels at the Crimean bridge over a seven-day period. The bridge is strategically important for Russia and has come under repeated attacks throughout the war.

Russia has “sunk” a number of vessels by the Crimean bridge using what analysts call a “200-year-old strategy” to defend itself against the emerging threat of Ukrainian sea drones.

Satellite images gathered by Sky News show six dark objects in a row appearing over a seven-day period by the Crimean bridge, also known as Kerch Bridge.

The bridge is the only direct link between the transport network of Russia and the Crimean peninsula and has come under repeated attacks throughout the war.

It follows claims made by Ukraine’s intelligence ministry (GUR) that Russia planned to “sink at least six watercraft” by the bridge to create a “protective lane” in front of it.

The GUR also said Russia “intended to install barriers between the sunken ferries” to protect the bridge “from damage”, in a Telegram post last Tuesday.

In satellite imagery taken by Planet Labs PBC on 19 August, no objects are visible in the water south of the bridge, but on 21 August two vessels appear.

Two days later on 23 August another vessel can be seen on the surface of the water.

However, by 26 August, six objects in the exact same positions around 30 metres in length appear in a darker colour – which experts suggest could mean they have been sunk and are below the water.

Australia concerned about China economy, monitoring ‘very closely’

Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers poses for a photograph as he arrives to attend a G20 finance ministers’ and Central Bank governors’ meeting at Gandhinagar, India, July 18, 2023. REUTERS/Amit Dave Acquire Licensing Rights

Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers said on Sunday the government was closely watching China amid “concerning” signs of economic weakness that could weigh on Australia’s economy.

“I share the pretty substantial concerns that people have voiced about the Chinese economy,” Chalmers told Sky News television.

“It is concerning to see the weakness, the softness, in the recent weeks and months in the Chinese economy because it has obvious implications for us here in Australia.”

Recovery in China, the world’s second-largest economy, has sputtered due to a worsening property slump, weak consumer spending and tumbling credit growth, prompting the authorities to slash interest and promise further support while analysts downgrade growth forecasts.

China is the top trading partner for raw-materials exporter Australia, with annual trade of A$285 billion, although Canberra has urged exporters to become less reliant on China amid diplomatic tensions.

“In China they’re dealing with slower growth, they’ve got deflation, there are concerns in their property sector and to some extent in their banking sector, their exports have slowed as well, Chalmers said. “Our concerns for China in particular is something that we’re monitoring very closely.”

‘Warned Yevgeny Prigozhin Twice but Putin Didn’t Do it’: Belarus Prez Lukashenko

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Friday said he warned Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin twice to keep an eye out for threats to his life.

Speaking to Belta, Belarus-owned news agency, Lukashenko said that the first time he warned was soon after the Wagner’s forces foiled a bid to march on Moscow to mutiny against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“The first time was when I phoned him and negotiations (were taking) place while they were marching on Moscow,” Lukashenko said.

Lukashenko told Belta that he told Putin’s former caterer: “Yevgeny, do you understand that you will doom your people and will perish yourself?”

Prigozhin reportedly said: “I will die then, damn it!”

Lukashenko said the second time he warned Prigozhin during a meeting between him, Prigozhin and Dmitriy Utkin, a long-term lieutenant of Prigozhin.

Russian state media outlets this week showed footage of a private plane crashing into a field northwest of Moscow while en route to St. Petersburg. The plane was purportedly carrying Yevgeny Prigozhin, whose private army has been instrumental in the ongoing 2022 Russo-Ukrainian war.

Stronger US-India relationship could help America declare independence from China: Vivek Ramaswamy

‘The US should also have a stronger strategic relationship with India, including even a military relationship in the Andaman Sea’

Vivek Ramaswamy

A stronger relationship with India would help the US declare its “independence” from China, Indian-American Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy believes and has called for stronger strategic ties with New Delhi, including a military relationship in the Andaman Sea.

At 38, Ramaswamy is the youngest Republican presidential candidate ever. He is currently on a two-day swing to the crucial State of Iowa. On January 15, Iowa would kick off the 2024 Republican presidential primary season.

“A stronger US-India relationship could help the US declare independence from China. The US is economically dependent on China today, but with a stronger relationship with India, it becomes easier to declare independence from that Chinese relationship,” Ramaswamy told PTI in an interview.

A second-generation Indian-American, Ramaswamy founded Roivant Sciences in 2014 and led the largest biotech IPOs of 2015 and 2016, eventually culminating in successful clinical trials in multiple disease areas that led to FDA-approved products, according to his bio.

“The US should also have a stronger strategic relationship with India, including even a military relationship in the Andaman Sea. Knowing that India, if necessary, could block the Malacca Strait where actually China gets most of its Middle Eastern oil supplies. So, these are areas for real improvement in the US-India relationship.

“I think that would be good for the US and that’s exactly why I would lead accordingly,” Ramaswamy, a multimillionaire biotech entrepreneur-turned-politician, said in response to a question.

His polling numbers have gone up after the maiden presidential debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on August 23.

On the firing line of most of the Republican presidential nominees, in particular former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, former vice president Mike Pence and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley; Ramaswamy has suddenly gone up the ladder in polling numbers and in many polls, he is placed second after former president Donald Trump.

In his first interaction with the Indian media, Ramaswamy appeared to be a strong supporter of the growing India-US relationship, which has been a hallmark of multiple presidential administrations across the political aisle since the start of the Bill Clinton Administration.

“I think he (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) has been a good leader for India, and I look forward to working with him on building the US-India relationship further,” Ramaswamy said in response to a question.

During the first Republican presidential debate, his fellow Indian-American challenger Haley told him that he had no foreign policy experience. But Ramaswamy has developed his own vision of America’s foreign policy.

“The major challenge of US foreign policy is that we’re not protecting the homeland. We’re fighting wars that don’t advance American interests while leaving the homeland actually vulnerable. So I think it’s a mistake for the US to continue engagement in Ukraine. That doesn’t advance US national interest,” he said.

“To the contrary, I think it actually is going to impede US credibility on the global stage. The US needs to focus on Communist China. That’s the top threat abroad. And protecting the homeland has to be the top priority at home with actual defence capabilities of the border,” he argued.

China, Russia-led bloc wants to dethrone US dollar, upend world order

The BRICS bloc of countries led by China and Russia want to upend the U.S. dollar. Indeed, South Africa’s ambassador to the group could not have been clearer last month when she said, “The days of a dollar-centric world is over. That’s a reality. We have a multipolar global trading system today.”

BRICS is an acronym coined in 2001 by Jim O’Neill, former managing director of Goldman Sachs’ Global Investment Management division, in his seminal paper in which he predicted that the budding economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China (and now includes South Africa) would surpass the world’s top economic superpowers of the G-7 in the years ahead.

Formed in June 2009 at their its summit held in Yekaterinburg, Russia, the group accepted South Africa as a full member in September 2010. Its officially stated mandate is “restructuring the global, political, economic and financial architecture to be more equitable, balanced and representative.”

The leaders of the five nations seeking to upend the West’s dominance in global affairs will gather on Aug. 22-24 for their 15th summit, minus Russian President Vladimir Putin, who will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov due to Putin facing an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Ukraine.

A top item, which undoubtedly will underpin all the discussions – while officially not on the agenda, according to South Africa’s ambassador – will be the creation of a new international currency. It is the bloc’s strategic ambition to stand up a joint BRICS monetary unit, akin to the Euro, which eventually would replace the U.S. dollar as the premier currency of international reserves and medium of exchange.

How else can one possibly achieve the goal of remaking the world’s existing geopolitical and economic structure? Why would anyone embark on such an ambitious project? And should the United States and its Western allies be worried?

The major move among non-Western countries towards de-dollarization has gained much momentum in the past year and a half. It is a direct result of what many analysts call the “weaponization” of the U.S. dollar by the U.S. government that levies economic sanctions on countries that Washington doesn’t agree with politically.

Economic sanctions have been employed by the U.S. for decades. Cuba, for instance, has been sanctioned for more than 60 years and Iran for more than 40. This practice has reached unprecedented levels, however, in the aftermath of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine to punish Russia as the White House seized $600 billion of its central bank’s assets in U.S. dollars, a move that even Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen called illegal in 2022. In addition, the Russian economy was cut off from SWIFT, the international money transfer system.

Washington’s policy of using the U.S. dollar as the non-kinetic, economic warfare tool to change Putin’s behavior – although it hasn’t worked since 2014 – prompted many non-Western countries to seek ways to reduce their dependence on the dollar. Many are eager to join BRICS for that reason, a trend that is highly welcome by China – the key driving force within BRICS – whose grand plan is to replace the United States as the military and economic superpower by 2049.

More than 40 countries have recently expressed interest in joining the block in an effort to reduce the currency risk and bypass U.S. sanctions, if necessary. These aspirants include both, U.S. foes, such as Iran, and allies, such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Indonesia and Argentina. The message is clear: The non-Western world wants to keep business and economics separate from politics and ideology. It is ready to challenge the Western international norms that have governed global trade and finance since 1944 when 44 nations, including the Soviet Union, founded the Bretton Woods system that includes the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Is this threat to U.S. economic hegemony as real as Moscow and Beijing, who have been pushing the “multipolar world” narrative for years, want you to believe? The two authoritarian regimes have joined forces to challenge U.S. policy at every corner, eager to dethrone the dollar.

Seven killed, 144 wounded in Russian missile strike on Ukraine’s Chernihiv

Seven people including a 6-year-old girl were killed, 144 wounded, and 41 were in hospital after a Russian missile struck a central square in the historic northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv on Saturday, Ukrainian officials said.

“I am sure our soldiers will give a response to Russia for this terrorist attack,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address, delivered early on Sunday at the end of a visit to Sweden. “A notable response.”

He said that of the 144 people injured, 15 were children, and named the girl killed as Sofia. Fifteen others were police officers, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said on Telegram. Klymenko said most of the victims were in vehicles, crossing the road, or returning from church.

Regional governor Viacheslav Chaus said 41 people were in hospital on Saturday.

Zelenskiy said the strike on Chernihiv, a city of leafy boulevards and centuries-old churches about 145 km (90 miles) north of Kyiv, coincided with the Orthodox holiday of the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord.

Debris was scattered across a square in front of the damaged theatre and surrounding buildings, where parked vehicles were heavily damaged. A 63-year-old who only gave her first name, Valentyna, showed the damaged balcony in her apartment opposite the theatre.

“It is horrific. Horrific. There were wounded, ambulances and broken glass in here. Nightmare. Just nightmare,” she said.

The roof of the neoclassical theatre was torn off by the strike.

Russia has attacked Ukrainian cities far from the frontline with missiles and drones as part of the full-scale invasion that began in February 2022.

People leaving church and others passing by were among those hurt when the missile hit the theatre, where a meeting was taking place, Chaus said.

Law enforcement agencies were looking into how Russians became aware of the event, which he said included business and community representatives but Ukrainian media reported involved drone manufacturers. Both sides have widely used drones on the battlefield.

Taiwan detects 42 warplanes in Chinese military drills

More than 40 Chinese warplanes flew over Taiwan’s air defence zone on Saturday, as part of military drills that Taiwan called “irrational and provocative”.

About 26 Chinese aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, Taiwan’s ministry of defence said.

It said Beijing was trying to influence Taiwan’s upcoming election.

China said the drills would test its forces’ ability to fight in “combat conditions”, state media reported.

The People’s Liberation Army “launched joint air and sea patrols and military exercises of the navy and air force around the island of Taiwan” on Saturday, military spokesperson Shi Yi is quoted by Xinhua as saying.

The exercises would serve as a “stern warning to the collusion of ‘Taiwan independence’ separatists with foreign elements and their provocations”, he added.

It follows Chinese anger at a recent stopover by Taiwan’s vice president, William Lai, in the United States. China previously launched major military exercises after Nancy Pelosi, then US House speaker, visited Taiwan last year and again when President Tsai Ing-wen met with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California.

Mr Lai, a frontrunner in Taiwan’s upcoming presidential election in January, was visiting the US on a trip to Paraguay.

China said Mr Lai was a “troublemaker” and that it would take “resolute measures” to “safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

Despite China’s claim to sovereignty over the island, Taiwan governs itself. It described China’s military exercise as “irrational and provocative behaviour”.

Taiwan said it would dispatch “appropriate forces” to respond “with practical actions” – adding that the national army was using reconnaissance methods to “strictly control” the situation.

“Conducting a military exercise this time under a pretext not only does not help the peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, but also highlights (China’s) militaristic mentality and confirms the hegemonic nature of its military expansion,” Taiwan’s defence ministry said.

‘Who Are They To Tell Us’: Philippines’ Response on China’s Calls for Removing Ship

China renewed calls Tuesday for the Philippines to remove an ageing ship from a reef that Manila uses to press its stake in the Spratly Islands in defiance of Beijing’s claim to nearly the entire South China Sea.

The move comes after the Philippines accused the China Coast Guard of firing water cannon against boats on a resupply mission to its garrison stationed on the grounded vessel at the weekend.

The BRP Sierra Madre — deliberately grounded in 1999 in an effort to check the advance of China in the hotly contested waters — has long been a flashpoint between Manila and Beijing.

The handful of Philippine marines deployed on the crumbling vessel depend upon resupply missions to survive their remote posting.

The Philippine military and coast guard accused the China Coast Guard of breaking international law by blocking and firing water cannon at the resupply mission, preventing one of the charter boats from reaching the shoal.

Beijing has defended its actions as “professional” and accused Manila of “illegal delivery of construction materials” to the grounded ship.

“The Philippine side has repeatedly made clear promises to tow away the warship illegally ‘stranded’ on the reef,” a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry said Tuesday.

“Twenty-four years have passed, the Philippine side has not only failed to tow away the warship, but also attempted to repair and reinforce it on a large scale to achieve permanent occupation of the Ren’ai Reef,” they said, using the Chinese term for the Second Thomas Shoal.

“The Chinese side once again urges the Philippines to immediately tow away the ‘stranded’ warship from the Ren’ai Reef and restore the status of no one and no facilities on the reef,” they said.

The Philippine foreign ministry said Tuesday the “permanent station” on Second Thomas Shoal was in response to China’s “illegal occupation” of nearby Mischief Reef in 1995.

China’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday that international talks in Saudi Arabia at the weekend on finding a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine crisis had helped “to consolidate international consensus”.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in a phone conversation on Monday that China would uphold an independent and impartial position on Ukraine as it strives to find a political settlement to the issue.

Wang’s comments to Lavrov were announced in a Foreign Ministry statement on Monday that said China would be an “objective and rational voice” at any international multilateral forums and “actively promote peace talks”. The statement came after the ministry said earlier on Monday that international talks in Saudi Arabia at the weekend on finding a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine crisis had helped “to consolidate international consensus”.

More than 40 countries, including China, India, the United States and European countries, but not Russia, took part in the Jeddah talks that ended on Sunday.

China sent its Special Envoy for Eurasian Affairs and former ambassador to Russia, Li Hui, who in May toured six European capitals to try to find common ground for an eventual political settlement of the conflict, now in its 18th month.

Beijing has refused to condemn Moscow for the invasion of Ukraine it launched in February 2022. It has offered its own peace plan, which received a lukewarm response in both Russia and Ukraine, while the United States and NATO were sceptical.

American Billionaire Behind Spreading Chinese Propaganda in India and Abroad: NYT Report

American Billionaire Neville Roy Singham has been linked to spreading Chinese propaganda in India, South Africa, US and many countries. An investigation led by The New York Times, a “lavishly funded influence campaign that defends China and pushes its propaganda” has been unearthed.

As per the NYT report, Neville Roy Singham, an American billionaire and supporter of the Chinese Communist Party, has been labelled as the “heart of this campaign” spreading Chinese propaganda across the world.

From US, to South Africa to Brazil and all the way to New Delhi India, Singham has funded some of the leading faces and websites of Chinese Propaganda.

No Cold War, NewsClick, Code Pink are just some of the organisations linked to Neville and his network of Chinese Propaganda.

As per NYT, neutral sounding groups such as No Cold War and Code Pink popped up in the recent years. Code Pink, co-founded by former Democratic Political Advisor and Singham’s wife – Jodie Evans initially started out as a group which was extremely critical of China’s human rights record has now transformed into a group that now defends the interment of Muslim Ugyhurs in China.

Japan PM Kishida visits Seoul to forge closer ties amid North Korea threats

Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida arrived in Seoul on Sunday (May 7) to meet South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, facing a sceptical public there as the leaders seek deeper ties amid nuclear threats from North Korea and China’s increasing assertiveness.

Kishida’s bilateral visit, the first by a Japanese leader to Seoul in 12 years, returns the trip Yoon made to Tokyo in March, where they sought to close a chapter on the historical disputes that have dominated Japan-South Korea relations for years.

Soon before departing, Kishida told reporters he hoped to have “an open discussion based on a relationship of trust” with Yoon, without elaborating on specific issues.

Yoon is facing criticism at home that he has given more than he’s received in his efforts to improve relations with Japan, including by proposing that South Korean businesses – not Japanese companies as ordered by a court – compensate victims of wartime labour during Japan’s 1910-1945 colonial occupation.

South Korean officials are hopeful that Kishida will make some kind of gesture in return and offer some political support, although few observers expect any further formal apology for historical wrongs. Yoon himself has signalled he doesn’t believe that is necessary.

The focus of the summit instead will likely revolve around security cooperation in the face of North Korea’s nuclear threats, said Shin-wha Lee, a professor of international relations at Seoul-based Korea University.

“Within the framework of the ‘Washington Declaration,’ which outlines plans to strengthen extended deterrence, Korea will explore ways to enhance the collaborative efforts with Japan,” she added.

“We have a lot of opportunities to cooperate when it comes to addressing the threat of North Korea” and securing a free and open Indo-Pacific, a Japanese foreign ministry official said.

Tensions have simmered between Washington and Beijing as China becomes more assertive in its territorial claims over Taiwan and in the South China Sea, while the US shores up alliances across the Asia-Pacific.

But the historical differences between South Korea and Japan also threaten to cast a shadow over the blossoming ties between its two leaders.

The majority of South Koreans believe Japan hasn’t apologised sufficiently for atrocities during Japan’s 1910-1945 occupation of Korea, Lee said. “They think that Prime Minister Kishida should show sincerity during his visit to South Korea, such as mentioning historical issues and expressing apologies,” she added.

On the other hand, Japan is taking it slow, said Daniel Russel, former US assistant secretary of state for East Asia and the Pacific.

Leaked Pentagon docs reveal Taiwan unready for China strike: report

The classified Pentagon documents stated that Taiwan officials question the ability to “accurately detect missile launches.”

Secret military documents reportedly included in the mass Discord leak posted by Massachusetts Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira reveal critical weaknesses in Taiwan’s air defenses.

The classified Pentagon assessments of the island nation’s military readiness state that Taiwan officials themselves question their ability to “accurately detect missile launches” from China, the Washington Post reported Saturday.

US analysts found that only half of Taiwan’s aircraft would be “fully mission capable” in the event of a Chinese attack — and suggested that Beijing could successfully control Taiwan’s airspace if it chose to invade.

Last week, three days of Chinese “combat readiness patrols” signaled a warning to independent Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory.

Teixeira, 21, a low-level Air National Guard information technology specialist, is accused of posting hundreds of classified documents related to the Ukraine war and other sensitive military topics to a Discord channel with 20 to 30 members.

The social media site, popular among video-game players such as Teixeira, is cooperating with the investigation, Discord chief legal officer Clint Smith said Friday.

“This recent incident fundamentally represents a misuse of our platform and a violation of our platform rules,” Smith said.

Heavily armed federal agents arrested Teixeira at his mother’s home in North Dighton, Mass. on Thursday.

Teixeira leaked the critical weaknesses in Taiwan’s air defenses.
Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School

Meanwhile, one of former President Trump’s top national security aides said Saturday that Teixeira could not have acted alone — but is merely the patsy in a much wider intelligence breach.

“It’s just not possible” for Teixeira to have had access to such a highly sensitive trove, Kash Patel, Trump’s former deputy director of national intelligence, told Breitbart News.

“You can be the biggest IT person in [the Department of Defense], and you are still compartmented off of the actual information,” Patel explained.

Patel said he does not believe “for a single second” that “this guy — a 21-year-old Air National Guardsman — ran his operation alone.”

Instead, he said, the explosive revelations are likely part of “an Assange-style operation” — referring to the WikiLeaks founder who faces espionage charges for helping U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning steal classified diplomatic cables and military files.

“The way it was produced, the way it was put out there — pages, printed photographs taken, published online — that is a methodical way of releasing classified information illegally,” Patel said — calling Teixiera’s arrest “an extensive cover-up.”

Teixeira, who joined the Massachusetts Air National Guard in 2019, worked as a cyber transport systems journeyman with the 102nd Intelligence Wing, responsible for the upkeep of military communications hardware.

Ukraine likely to face bloody Crimea fight, satellite images show

Russian forces have been digging defensive fortifications and trenches that experts say would be difficult and costly to overcome.

Russia has increased its defensive military reinforcements in Crimea [Planet.com/Al Jazeera]
An analysis of satellite images by Al Jazeera has revealed that Russian forces are fortifying the Crimean peninsula in anticipation of a Ukrainian attempt to recapture it.

Experts say that those defences are likely to make any such effort difficult and bloody.

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, eight years before launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. As the war grinds on for more than a year, Ukraine’s political and military leadership has made it clear that it defines victory as reclaiming its 1991 borders, which Russia had recognised. The United Nations and all of Ukraine’s Western allies also recognise those borders, which include Crimea.

The investigation by Al Jazeera’s Sanad news verification and monitoring unit found that between February and March, the Crimean border and surrounding areas were transformed into a fortified barrier ahead of an expected spring counteroffensive by Ukrainian forces.

In particular, an extensive network of trenches and defences was constructed and now extends across the border villages of Crimea. Construction and expansion of several significant military bases also took place during the same period, according to the images provided to Sanad by SkySat and Planet.com.

Images taken on April 1 also show that authorities in Crimea have set up a sea barrier at a dock of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the Sevastopol port, in addition to several new buildings and infrastructure developments within the port area.

Meanwhile, advertisements for workers to build fortifications have appeared on Russian job sites in Crimea over the past few months. Analysts say a shortage of manpower could be a significant reason why these trenches are not yet fully effective.

“None of the trenches in any of the photos are 100 percent complete. All indicate ongoing work, as the trench networks are not connected and lack complete communications trenches,” Zev Faintuch, senior intelligence analyst at security company Global Guardian, told Al Jazeera after seeing the photographs.

The trenches in northern Crimea suggest Russia is acting to deter Ukraine from mounting a ground assault from the north, Ukraine’s only way in, said Faintuch.

Further south, the trenches and fortifications suggest Russia is expecting any successful breach of its first line of defence to move along two highways, the E97 and E105.

“The new Russian defensive lines leverage the topography and existing villages to create choke points along these highways. In essence, if the Russians find themselves on the defensive in Crimea, they plan on giving Ukraine a taste of its own medicine,” said Faintuch, referring to the high casualties Ukrainian defenders have inflicted on Russian forces trying to take the eastern provinces of Luhansk and Donetsk.

Crimea operations ‘logical’

Last September, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Valery Zaluzhnyi, and Lieutenant General Mykhailo Zabrodskyi penned a strategy paper in which they described Crimea as the “centre of gravity” of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and a territory that would perpetually enable Russia to threaten Ukraine.

“Crimea was and remains the basis for lines of communication on the southern strategic flank of Russian aggression,” they wrote. “The territory of the peninsula allows for the deployment of significant groups of troops and supplies of material resources.

“It is logical to assume planning for 2023 an operation or a series of operations to seize the peninsula,” they said.

The generals also said Ukraine would require “ten to twenty combined military brigades – depending on the plan and ambitions of the Ukrainian command”. As Ukraine no longer had access to enough Soviet-era weaponry to equip these brigades, the generals said, “this can be done exclusively by replacing the main types of weapons of already existing brigades with modern ones provided by Ukraine’s partners”.In late January, Western allies made a key decision to supply Ukraine with offensive weapons, pledging 258 main battle tanks and hundreds of armoured fighting vehicles. But those tanks would equip only three brigades in a NATO army, and only about four dozen have been delivered.

Is it possible?

Western leaders backing Ukraine with military assistance have been squeamish about giving the Ukrainian government the go-ahead to invade Crimea, not least because Russian President Vladimir Putin has insinuated it might trigger the use of tactical nuclear weapons.

That cautious approach has its critics.

Alexander Vindman, a retired United States Army lieutenant colonel, argued against the “incremental escalation” Ukraine and Russia are currently following.

“By the summer, Ukraine is likely to begin targeting more of Russia’s military infrastructure in Crimea in preparation for a broader campaign to liberate the peninsula,” he wrote in February, and the West was providing only enough weapons to keep Ukraine fighting, not winning.

But Russia, too, is not winning. It has suffered enormous attrition trying to take Donetsk and Luhansk.“When you get to the point where the Russians are weak and the Ukrainians are at their height, that’s when, if and when the decision is made, that we’re not looking for a diplomatic solution, we really think we can take Crimea,” Colonel Dale Buckner, a retired special forces commander who runs Global Guardian, told Al Jazeera.

As for Putin’s nuclear threats, Ukraine dismisses them. Its military intelligence chief, Kyrylo Budanov, called them “not true”.

“Crimea will be returned to us. I’ll tell you more: It all started in Crimea in 2014, and it will all end there,” Budanov said.

Oleksiy Danilov, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, recently repeated that belief as he listed a number of steps Ukraine would take after it retakes Crimea, including the destruction of Kerch bridge, which connects Crimea to the Russia mainland.

What has Ukraine done to control Crimea?

The battle for Crimea could be said to have begun last summer, when Ukraine forced Putin to pull back major military assets.

A drone attack on the Russian naval base at Sevastopol in July 2022 injured six people. Another attack using naval drones caused a series of explosions in late October, and convinced Russia to relocate its submarines and frigates east to Novorossiysk.

On August 9, a Ukrainian drone attack against the Saky airfield put up to 10 Russian Su-24 and Su-30M aircraft out of action, forcing Russia to relocate its aircraft to mainland Russia. Another drone strike hit the Belbek airfield in October.

“The task of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for 2023 is to make these feelings sharper, more natural and quite tangible for the Russians,” wrote Zaluzhny and Zabrodskyi, the Ukrainian generals.

On October 8, a truck bomb temporarily disabled the Kerch bridge, which connects Crimea to the Russia mainland, hampering supplies.

Two days later, Ukraine’s general staff said Russian occupation authorities were drawing up contingency plans to evacuate the families of the occupation leadership in Crimea to Russia if necessary. Those evacuations have reportedly begun to take place in recent weeks.

Macron says Europe must not be ‘follower’ of US, China on Taiwan

French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview published Sunday that Europe must not be a “follower” of either the US or China on Taiwan, saying that the bloc risks entanglement in “crises that aren’t ours”.

His comments risk riling Washington and highlight divisions in the European Union over how to approach China, as the US steps up confrontation with its closest rival and Beijing draws closer to Russia in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine.

“The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must be followers and adapt ourselves to the American rhythm and a Chinese overreaction,” Macron told media including French business daily Les Echos and Politico as he returned Friday from a three-day state visit to Beijing.

Citing his prized ideal of EU “strategic autonomy”, the French leader said that “we must be clear where our views overlap with the US, but whether it’s about Ukraine, relations to China or sanctions, we have a European strategy”.

“We don’t want to get into a bloc versus bloc logic,” he added, saying Europe “should not be caught up in a disordering of the world and crises that aren’t ours”.

China views democratic, self-ruled Taiwan as part of its territory and has vowed to take it one day, by force if necessary.

Angered by Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen’s meeting last week with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Beijing launched massive military exercises around the island immediately after Macron departed for France, including simulated strikes on its territory.

“AMBIGUITY”

Macron discussed Taiwan with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Friday, during a visit in which he was feted but more hawkish EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was kept mostly at arm’s length.

His Elysee Palace office said the talks had been “dense and frank” and that the French president was concerned about “growing tensions in the region” that could lead to “a terrible accident”.

Macron was “simply talking about the risk of Chinese ‘overreaction’, forgetting China wishes to change the status quo by taking over Taiwan one way or the other”, Antoine Bondaz of the Paris-based Foundation for Strategic Research (FRS) commented on Twitter.

“Why this desire never to recall we have an interest in maintaining stability?” he added, warning that “this ambiguity … instils doubt in our like-minded partners”.

Taiwan island was just one area that risked “an acceleration of tensions breaking out between the duopoly” of China and the US, Macron said.

As Joe Biden visits Northern Ireland, can the US again help seal the deal?

One of the stars that aligned when Tony Blair felt the hand of history on his shoulder 25 years ago was the changing politics of the Irish lobby in the US. For years, American money had been funnelled to the IRA through an organisation called Noraid.

When I worked for the BBC in the early 1990s, I interviewed Irish Americans at a St Patrick’s Day fundraiser in New York who thought they were supporting freedom fighters against English colonial oppressors. They did not know that most people in Northern Ireland wanted to be part of the UK.

Pakistan: Imran Khan again hails India for procuring Russian oil at discounted rate; laments he couldn’t

Although his Russia tour was the first visit by a Pakistani premier to Moscow in the past 23 years, Khan could not broker any deal that could give relief to the cash-strapped country.

Pakistan’s former PM Imran Khan and his Indian PM Narendra Modi.

Pakistan economic crisis: As Pakistan reeling under the worst-ever economic crisis, former Prime Minister Imran Khan lamented his country could also purchase Russian crude oil at a discounted rate that India enjoys despite the ongoing Ukraine war.

While addressing the countrymen in a video message, Khan claimed he had discussed the purchase of oil at a discounted rate when he met Russian President Vladimir Putin just days before the latter announced a full-fledged war against neighbouring Ukraine.

Imran Khan could not broker any deal

Although his Russia tour was the first visit by a Pakistani premier to Moscow in the past 23 years, Khan could not broker any deal that could give relief to the cash-strapped country.

“We wanted to get cheap Russian crude oil just like India but that could not happen. Unfortunately, my government fell due to a no-confidence motion just four weeks after I returned to Moscow,” Khan said. Notably, his claims were not confirmed by any of the Russian media outlets when he visited Moscow last year.

Khan has a habit of praising India

Interestingly, this was not the first time when Khan acknowledged India’s achievements in terms of growing its economy and purchasing Russian oil despite Western pressure.

“No other leader except Nawaz in the world has properties worth billions. Tell me about one country whose Premier or leader has billions worth of properties outside the country. Even in our neighbouring country, how many properties does PM Modi has outside India?” he had said at a public gathering in September.

Russian oil export nearly 22-fold

It is worth noting that India is the world’s third-largest oil-consuming and importing nation. It imports 85 per cent of its crude oil needs. Ever since the war between Russia and its neighbouring nation started last year, the West and Europe imposed stringent sanctions on its energy. This resulted in Russia’s offering more discounts to its oldest ally, India.

Recently, a top Russian official claimed it supplied crude oil to India nearly 22-fold ever since the West imposed sanctions. According to multiple state news agencies, the Russian Deputy Prime Minister said that the maximum energy was diverted to “friendly nations” after the United States and the European Union imposed back-to-back sanctions on Russian energy.

China starts drills around Taiwan after US Speaker meeting

[1/6] A Chinese warship sails during a military drill near Fuzhou, Fujian Province, near the Taiwan-controlled Matsu Islands that are close to the Chinese coast, China, April 8, 2023. REUTERS/Thomas Peter
China began three days of military exercises around Taiwan on Saturday to express anger at Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen’s meeting with the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, as the island’s defence ministry said it would respond calmly.

The drills, announced the day after Tsai returned from the United States, had been widely expected after China condemned the meeting with Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles.

China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory and has never renounced the use of force to bring the island under its control. Taiwan’s government strongly objects to China’s claims.

Beijing’s announcement also came just hours after China hosted a visit by senior European leaders.

The People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theatre Command said it had started the combat readiness patrols and “Joint Sword” exercises around Taiwan, having said earlier it would be holding them in the Taiwan Strait and to the north, south and east of Taiwan “as planned”.

“This is a serious warning to the Taiwan independence separatist forces and external forces’ collusion and provocation, and it is a necessary action to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” it said in a short statement.

Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said it was monitoring the situation, maintaining a high degree of vigilance and would respond appropriately to defend the island’s security.

China was using Tsai’s U.S. visit “as an excuse to carry out military exercises, which has seriously damaged regional peace, stability and security”, the ministry said in a statement.

“The military will respond with a calm, rational and serious attitude, and will stand guard and monitor in accordance with the principles of ‘not escalating nor disputes’ to defend national sovereignty and national security.”

The ministry said earlier on Saturday that in the previous 24 hours it had spotted four Chinese aircraft in Taiwan’s air defence zone, not an unusual number.

Reuters reporters in a seaside area near Fuzhou, which sits opposite the Taiwan-controlled Matsu islands, saw a Chinese warship firing shells onto a drill area on China’s coast, part of drills announced by China late on Friday.

Tsai will meet visiting U.S. lawmaker delegation, led by Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, later on Saturday.

DIPLOMACY AND DRILLS

The People’s Daily, the official newspaper of China’s ruling Communist Party, said in a commentary on Saturday that the government has “a strong ability to thwart any form of Taiwan independence secession”.

“All countermeasures taken by the Chinese government belong to China’s legitimate and legal right to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” it said.

Tsai has repeatedly offered talks with China but has been rebuffed as the government views her as a separatist. She says only Taiwan’s people can decide their future.

China had threatened unspecified retaliation if the meeting with McCarthy – second in line to succeed the U.S. president, after the vice president – were to take place. Beijing staged war games around Taiwan, including live-fire missile launches, in August after then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei.

However, unlike in August, China has yet to announce whether it will also stage missile drills. In the previous instance, China published a map at the time it announced the drills, showing which maritime areas near Taiwan it would be firing into.

Taiwanese officials had expected a less severe reaction to the McCarthy meeting, given it took place in the United States, but they had said they could not rule out the possibility of China staging more drills.

China’s announcement came hours after French President Emmanuel Macron left China, where he met President Xi Jinping and other senior leaders. Macron urged Beijing to talk sense to Russia over the war in Ukraine.

European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen, also in China this week to meet Xi, said stability in the Taiwan Strait was of paramount importance.

Russia’s ‘Merchant of Death’ Warns Donald Trump His Life Is in Danger

Russia’s “merchant of death” offered Donald Trump asylum in Russia this week, saying he believes the former president’s life is in danger if he remains in the United States.

In an interview on a Russian state-TV channel, Viktor Bout—an international arms dealer made infamous after his portrayal by Nicolas Cage in the 2005 film “Lord of War”—told a reporter he had sent a telegram to Trump warning him of an imminent threat to his life and urging him to flee to Russia for safety.

The threat against Trump’s life, Bout suggested, is not from an assassin or some unknown plot against him. Instead, he said, it comes from Trump’s own government and is a result of the Manhattan district attorney’s probe of allegations that Trump falsified business records to hide a hush money payment to former adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

Trump was arraigned this week on 34 counts related to that charge. He has denied all wrongdoing in the case, as well as an affair that Daniels claims they had.

Viktor Bout, a convicted Russian arms dealer, said on Russian state TV that he sent a telegram to Donald Trump warning him of an imminent threat to his life and urging him to flee to Russia for safety.

“The legal process which has now begun in New York won’t just end in Donald Trump being convicted and barred from the [2024] election,” Bout said on the Russia-24 news channel.

“Most likely he will simply be eliminated there,” he continued. “Therefore, I think it’s in the best interests of all of humanity and primarily all of the American people to invite Donald Trump here, to Russia, to give him security and protection here so that he leads this uprising against the globalists and, most importantly, does not allow the elimination of the American people.”

Newsweek reached out by email to the Trump presidential campaign for comment.

Bout made headlines internationally after he was party to a prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia for basketball star Brittney Griner this past December. She was sentenced to nine years in prison after being apprehended at a Russian airport and accused of possession of a small quantity of cannabis in her luggage. Authorities charged her with drug possession and smuggling.

Bout, by contrast, allegedly had familial connections at the very height of the Russian government and had attracted international scrutiny for his alleged crimes long before he was ever charged with anything.

He was eventually charged by U.S. officials in 2010 on allegations of lending material support to designated foreign terrorist organizations, conspiring to kill Americans abroad and conspiring to acquire and use an anti-aircraft missile, amid numerous other charges.

Classified Docs Leak on Social Media in Possible ‘Deliberate’ Move to Hinder Ukraine Efforts

Reuters

More than 100 classified documents detailing U.S. national security secrets have been leaked on social media, purportedly exposing crucial intelligence on Ukrainian military operations in a breach that could be a boon to Russia.

The documents, purported to have come from within U.S. military and intelligence agencies, have been circulated on Twitter, 4chan, and Telegram, where they were spread by pro-Kremlin commentators, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The Pentagon acknowledged on Thursday that officials were looking into the leak, which experts say may be one of the most damaging breaches in decades.

The New York Times, which was the first to report on the leaks, says defense officials were already scrambling early Friday to determine the scale of the first batch of leaked documents when it was discovered that another batch had been released.

One unnamed official quoted by the Times called the breach “a nightmare for the Five Eyes,” as the documents concern secrets regarding not only Ukraine, but also the Middle East, and China.

“As many of these were pictures of documents, it appears that it was a deliberate leak done by someone that wished to damage the Ukraine, U.S., and NATO efforts,” Mick Mulroy, a former senior Pentagon official, was quoted saying.

Officials say the documents do appear to be authentic Defense Department documents, but they have been modified in some ways to show scenarios more beneficial to Russia, such as lower figures for the number of Russian troops killed and inflated numbers of Ukraine’s war dead.

Some of the documents show the purported locations of Ukrainian air-defense systems, the quantities of air-defense missiles, and sensitive information about U.S.-provided arms and supplies.

US pledges $2.6 billion more in weapons aid to Ukraine

The U.S. unveiled $2.6 billion worth of military assistance that includes three air surveillance radars, anti-tank rockets and fuel trucks, the Pentagon announced on Tuesday, as Ukraine prepares a spring offensive against invading Russian forces.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Tuesday told the U.S. National Governors Association that the United States could protect its values by helping Ukraine.

“Our cooperation will allow for the new enhancement of your security, for our economy and yours, for jobs in both our countries,” Zelenskiy said by video link.

“The main thing is not to lose time, not to lose the chance we have. Act now, help now. Ukrainians act so that Americans don’t have to fight – and together we gain new strength for our countries,” he continued.

The Russian embassy in Washington reacted to the announcement by accusing the United States of wanting to drag out the conflict as long as possible, Russian news agency TASS said.

“The decision to supply weapons to Kyiv is a step towards escalating the Ukrainian crisis and increasing the number of civilian casualties,” it cited an embassy statement as saying.

The weapons aid package was comprised of $2.1 billion from Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) funding which allows President Joe Biden’s administration to buy weapons from industry rather than from U.S. weapons stocks.

The USAI package included additional munitions for NASAMS air defenses that the U.S. and allies have given to Kyiv, precision aerial munitions, Soviet-era GRAD rockets, anti-tank rockets, armored bridging systems used in assaults, and 105 fuel trailers, along with funding for training and maintenance.

The remaining $500 million came from Presidential Drawdown Authority funds, which allows the president to take from current U.S. stocks in an emergency.

Russia assumes UN Security Council presidency despite Ukrainian anger

A Russian tank in the occupied Ukrainian city of Mariupol in March last year

Russia has taken the presidency of the UN Security Council despite Ukraine urging members to block the move.

Each of the council’s 15 members takes up the presidency for a month, on a rotating pattern.

The last time Russia had the presidency, February 2022, it launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

It means the Security Council is being led by a country whose president is subject to an international arrest warrant for alleged war crimes.

The International Criminal Court – which is not a UN institution – issued the warrant for Vladimir Putin last month.

Despite Ukraine’s complaints, the United States said it could not block Russia – a permanent council member – from assuming the presidency.

The other permanent members of the council are the UK, US, France, and China.

The role is mostly procedural, but Moscow’s ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, told the Russian Tass news agency that he planned to oversee several debates, including one on arms control.

He said he would discuss a “new world order” that, he said, was coming to “replace the unipolar one”.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called Russia’s presidency “the worst joke ever for April Fool’s Day” and a “stark reminder that something is wrong with the way international security architecture is functioning”.

And in a further comment on Saturday, he called it “a slap in the face to the international community”.

Ukraine’s presidential adviser, Mykhaylo Podolyak, said the move was “another rape of international law… an entity that wages an aggressive war, violates the norms of humanitarian and criminal law, destroys the UN Charter, neglects nuclear safety, can’t head the world’s key security body”.

President Volodymyr Zelensky called last year for the Security Council to reform or “dissolve altogether”, accusing it of failing to take enough action to prevent Russia’s invasion.

He has also called for Russia to be removed of its member status.

But the US has said its hands were tied as the UN charter does not allow for the removal of a permanent member.

“Unfortunately, Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council and no feasible international legal pathway exists to change that reality,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told a news briefing this week.

She added the US expects Moscow “to continue to use its seat on the council to spread disinformation” and justify its actions in Ukraine.

The UN Security Council is an international body responsible for maintaining peace.

Five nations are permanently represented on the Security Council. They reflect the post-war power structure that held sway when the council was formed.

Members of this group work alongside 10 non-permanent member countries.

Russia’s presence as a permanent member on the Security Council means it can veto resolutions.

Pentagon Prepares for Space Warfare as Potential Threats From China, Russia Grow

White House’s spending request includes plans for simulators, equipment to train Space Force members for battle

The Pentagon is gearing up for a future conflict in space as China and Russia deploy missiles and lasers that can take out satellites and disrupt military and civilian communications.

The U.S. military long ago dropped the notion of crewed, orbiting space weapons in favor of satellites because the logistics of supporting people outside of Earth’s atmosphere were formidable.

The physics of space also make it impossible to sneak up on an enemy or quickly change orbit or direction. And earthbound tactics don’t work in space, where the U.S., China and Russia are all turning to satellites and sensors to wage and win any conflict.

“You can’t dig trenches in space,” said Marty Whelan, senior vice president of the Defense Systems Group at The Aerospace Corp., a federally funded research group.

“If deterrence fails, you can’t wait until something bad happens to get ready. You have to have the full infrastructure together,” said Mr. Whelan, a former Air Force major general, who led a strategic review of space systems for the Pentagon and the intelligence community.

The White House this month proposed a $30 billion annual budget for the U.S. Space Force, almost $4 billion more than last year and a bigger jump than for other services including the Air Force and the Navy.

The Space Force was created in 2019 as the sixth arm of the military, carving out responsibilities once embedded in the Air Force. A key aim of a stand-alone force was to plan, equip and defend U.S. interests in space for all of the services and focus attention on the emerging threats.

For the first time, the spending request also includes plans for simulators and other equipment to train Guardians, as Space Force members are known, for potential battle. The 16,000 Guardians are charged with running rocket launches, satellites and ground-based communication and sensor equipment.

That training will be critical. The physics and the mechanics of steering objects through space at more than 17,000 miles an hour give attackers the advantage they lack on the ground.

Space is also becoming crowded, with the number of tracked objects in orbit now topping 48,000, more than doubling over the past four years.

The U.S., China and Russia are signatories to the United Nations’ Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including scientific work. All three also have significant military assets in space.

New Zealand raises concerns with China on South China Sea, Taiwan

New Zealand Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta speaks during a session of the UN Human Rights Council, which voted to hold an urgent debate about Russia’s deadly invasion of Ukraine at Kyiv’s request, amid widespread international condemnation of Moscow’s attack, in Geneva, Switzerland February 28, 2022. New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta said on Saturday she had expressed concerns over the South China Sea and tensions in the Taiwan Strait during talks with her Chinese counterpart at the end of a visit to Beijing.

Mahuta also said in a statement she “noted New Zealand’s deep concerns regarding the human rights situation in Xinjiang and the erosion of rights and freedoms in Hong Kong”, during her meeting with Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Qin Gang.

“Nanaia Mahuta expressed concerns over developments in the South China Sea and increasing tensions in the Taiwan Strait,” the foreign minister’s statement said.

Mahuta said she reiterated New Zealand’s condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. China is a key ally of Russia and both have criticised the U.S. and NATO for undermining global stability.

Mahuta arrived in China on Wednesday for the four-day trip, the first by a New Zealand minister since 2019, and also met China’s top diplomat Wang Yi as well as business and women leaders.

Wang told Mahuta that China and New Zealand had always respected and trusted each other, according to a statement by the Chinese foreign ministry.

New Zealand has long been seen as the moderate voice on China in the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance also involving the United States, Australia, Britain, and Canada. But New Zealand’s tone on security and China’s growing presence in the South Pacific toughened in the past year after China and the Solomon Islands struck a security pact.

New Zealand has consistently expressed concerns about the potential militarisation of the Pacific, amid China’s military buildup in the South China Sea.

China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory and has never renounced the option of using force to take the island under its control, and claims a large part of the South China Sea.
