“We Had Prepared But…”: Skipper Uday Saharan’s Blunt Take On U-19 World Cup Final Loss

Uday Saharan admitted that his batters faltered in their execution and paid the price for playing rash shots in a heartbreaking 79-run loss to Australia in the U-19 World Cup final.

India skipper Uday Saharan admitted that his batters faltered in their execution and paid the price for playing rash shots in a heartbreaking 79-run loss to Australia in the U-19 World Cup final on Sunday. Set 254 to win, India cut a sorry figure with the bat as they were all out for 174 in 43.5 overs. Opener Adarsh Singh (47) and number 8 Murugan Abhishek (42) were the only Indian batters who showed the stomach to fight as the title slipped out of their hands. “We played a few rash shots, couldn’t spend more time at the crease. We had prepared, but couldn’t execute,” said Saharan during the post-match presentation.

While India faltered in the final step, skipper Saharan praised the team for their impressive run in the tournament.

“It was a very good tournament. I am very proud of the boys, they all played very well. They all showed great fighting spirit from the start, very proud of them,” he said.

“We got to learn a lot from the start to now. From the coaching staff to the games, learned a lot. Now we just need to keep learning more and move ahead.” For Australia it was their fourth U-19 World Cup title.

“It’s unbelievable. I am so proud of this group of boys and the coaches. A lot of work has gone in over the last few months,” Australia captain Hugh Weibgen said.

“We had fair bit of confidence that if we got 250 on the board, we’d defend it. India, obviously, is a class side, they dominated the whole tournament and they were on the wrong side today but they have a lot of class.” Australian bowlers were on the money with Callum Vidler (2/35), Charlie Anderson (1/42), Mahli Beardman (3/15) and Tom Straker (1/32) sharing seven wickets in the final.

“Personally, as a unit they work so well together. They know their roles, they know their jobs. I’ll be very surprised if the four of them don’t go a long way.” Weibgen also heaped praise on Harjas Singh, who top-scored for Australia with 55.

Kelvin Kiptum: World marathon record holder and his coach die in car crash

Last year Kiptum shattered the men’s world record, winning the Chicago Marathon in two hours and 35 seconds. His record was ratified by international track federation World Athletics last week.

World marathon record holder and London Marathon winner Kelvin Kiptum and his coach have died in a car crash, Kenya’s former prime minister has said.

The 24-year-old won the London Marathon last year.

His coach was also killed in the crash, Kenyan runner Milcah Chemos said, who went to the hospital where the bodies were taken.

The crash happened on a road between two towns in western Kenya, she said, in a high-altitude region renowned as a training base for long distance runners.

Kenya’s former prime minister Raila Odinga said on X: “Devastating news as we mourn the loss of a remarkable individual, Kelvin Kiptum, World Record holder and Kenyan athletics icon. Together with his coach, they tragically passed on in an accident tonight.

“My deepest condolences to his loved ones, friends, and the entire athletics fraternity.

“Our nation grieves the profound loss of a true hero.”

Kiptum smashed the course record for the London Marathon last year, winning the men’s event in the second-fastest marathon in history, crossing the finish line in two hours one minute and 25 seconds.

China’s teen sensation Pan Zhanle set the men’s 100 metres freestyle world record at the swimming World Championships in Doha on Sunday with a stunning leadoff swim in the 4x100m relay to power his nation to the title.
The 19-year-old clocked 46.80 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 46.86 set by Romania’s David Popovici, as the opening day of the event finished with a bang at the Aspire Dome pool.

The amazing swim lifts the teenager into favourite for the 100m gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
A calm Pan said he had not been hunting the world record.
“Actually at this meet, the main thing for me was to perform,” he told reporters.
“My next goal is to swim fast — faster and faster.
“I don’t know (how fast).”
The 19-year-old flirted with record pace at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year.
He became the first Asian swimmer to break the 47 seconds barrier in the event and clocked an incredible 46.65 in a relay leg. Only the leadoff leg of a relay counts as a world record.

Umesh Yadav’s cryptic Instagram story goes viral after India snub for last three England Tests

Umesh, who last appeared for India in the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023, seemed particularly hurt by the non-selection

Umesh Yadav last played for India in the WTC final in June 2023(ANI)

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Saturday, announced the squad for the final three matches of the five-Test series against England. Shreyas Iyer was left out, Virat Kohli remained unavailable because of personal reasons, while Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul have been named in the 17-man India squad, albeit their participation is subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI’s medical team.

While Iyer’s absence and the true reason behind it remained the cynosure of the squad announcement, BCCI’s move also indicated that India have begun to look past veteran stars in Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Umesh Yadav despite the batting order lacking experience and the pace-bowling line-up relying on completely on Jasprit Bumrah.

Umesh, who last appeared for India in the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023, seemed particularly hurt by the non-selection, especially after an impressive run in the ongoing domestic season where he has picked up 19 wickets in seven innings.

Taking on Instagram after the squad announcement, Umesh posted a story that read: “Kitaabon par dhool jamne se, kahaaniyan khatm nahi hoti (Stories don’t get over with dust accumulating on books).”

BCCI’s selection committee has picked Akash Deep as the extra seamer in the line-up. The Bengal quick, who snared 103 wickets in 28 first-class games at 23.18, earned his maiden call-up.

Umesh’s non-selection happened amid concerning numbers from India’s second seamer. Indian fast-bowling unit have picked up 16 wickets in two Tests, with Bumrah accounting for 14 of those dismissals at just 10.66. Mohammed Siraj went wicketless in the opening Test, where he bowled only 11 overs. Mukhesh Kumar, who replaced him in the India XI for the Vizag match, averaged 70 in 12 overs for a single wicket.

Qatar Beat Jordan To Retain AFC Asian Cup With Akram Afif Hat-Trick

Hosts Qatar retained the Asian Cup with a 3-1 win on Saturday against surprise packages Jordan with Akram Afif the home hero with a hat-trick of penalties.

Akram Afif scored a hat-trick in final of AFC Asian Cup against Jordan.

Hosts Qatar retained the Asian Cup with a 3-1 win on Saturday against surprise packages Jordan with Akram Afif the home hero with a hat-trick of penalties. It was a fitting final act to a month of football that began with 24 teams and witnessed a series of dramatic games. It will also help dispel the memories of Qatar’s World Cup, when they lost all three games, the worst record of any host in the competition’s history. Playing in front of 86,492 spectators at Lusail Stadium, which staged the World Cup final 14 months ago, Jordan were in their first Asian Cup final and contesting the biggest game in their history.

Ranked 87th in FIFA’s world rankings, 29 places below their opponents, they fell behind midway through the first half when forward Afif held his nerve with a penalty for his sixth goal of the tournament.

Qatar fully deserved their half-time lead but Jordan roared back to equalise through Yazan Al-Naimat’s smart finish.

The underdogs were level however for just six minutes, Afif slotting home once again from the penalty spot after the referee was advised by VAR to go to his pitch-side monitor.

This time there was to be no Jordan comeback and Afif scored again from the spot for his hat-trick in injury time, again after a VAR intervention.

At the final whistle the triumphant Qatari substitutes raced from the bench and threw Afif in the air.

Afif holds nerve

Qatar came into the final attempting to become the fifth team to lift back-to-back Asian titles and hoping to erase the bitter memories of their home World Cup.

8 Appearances, 5 Wins, 3 Defeats: India’s Record In Under-19 World Cup Finals

The Under-19 World Cup final on Sunday will be a ninth apperance for India in the summit clash of the event

Uday Saharan-led Indian cricket team will be taking on Australia in the final of Under-19 World Cup 2024 at Willowmoore Park, Benoni on Sunday. It will be a ninth apperance for India in the summit clash of the event. Out of the eight matches played so far, the side won five and lost three. Notably, India are the most successful team in the history of the tournament. Australia, with three titles, are the second best team on the list. Here is a look at India’s performance in the finals of Under-19 World Cup so far –

2000: This was the first time India made it to the summit clash of the event. Under the captaincy of Mohammad Kaif, India registered a one-sided victory over Sri Lanka in Colombo. After getting an invitation to bowl first, India bundled out Sri Lanka for 178 and then chased down the total in 40.4 overs with 6 wickets in hand. Yuvraj Singh was also a part of that Indian team.

2006: This India’s second appearance in the final of Under-19 World Cup but unlike the last time, the result didn’t go in their favour as they suffered a 38-run loss at hands of arch-rivals Pakistan in Colombo. Ravikant Shukla was the captain of the Indian side that had the likes of Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja, Piyush Chawla. Pakistan posted 109 all out after electing to bat first and then bowled India out for 71.

2008: This was the third time India entered the final of Under-19 World Cup. The side handed a 12-run loss (DLS method) to its opponent South Africa in Kuala Lumpur. Virat Kohli-led India posted a total of 159 all out before restricting the Proteas to 103 for 8. Stars like Saurabh Tiwary, Manish Pandey, Ravindra Jadeja and Siddarth Kaul were also part of the Indian team.

2012: India won the title for the third time, beating Australia in the summit clash in Townsville. India restricted Australia at 225 for 8 after electing to bowl first. The side then chased down the target in 47.4 overs with 6 wickets in hand, thanks to captain Unmukt Chand’s 111 not out. Hanuma Vihari and Sandeep Sharma were also the part of the winning Indian team.

2016: From this edition, India have consecutively managed to make it to the final of Under-19 World Cup so far. Rishabh Pant, Washington Sundar, Sarfaraz Khan, Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan were among the star players in the team.

2018: This final against Australia at Mount Maunganui was truly dominated by India. Electing to bat first, Australia posted 216 before India chased it down in 38.5 overs. Prithvi Shaw was the captain of the Indian side that had the likes of Shubman Gill and Shivam Mavi.

Argentina’s friendly against Ivory Coast, scheduled to be held in Beijing in March, has been cancelled, the Chinese city’s football association said on Saturday, following a backlash against Lionel Messi’s failure to play in a match in Hong Kong.

Beijing’s announcement came a day after Hangzhou’s sports authorities also cancelled a friendly between Argentina and Nigeria after Messi’s failure to play for Inter Miami in Hong Kong on Sunday caused widespread anger among fans.

“Beijing does not plan, for the moment, to organise the match in which Lionel Messi was to participate,” the Beijing Football Association said in a statement to local media.

Messi, who did not play in the friendly in Hong Kong due to a reported injury, appeared as a second-half substitute on Wednesday in Inter Miami’s friendly against Vissel Kobe in Tokyo.

‘Records will be set’: Americans bet big on Super Bowl 58

The sports gambling industry is preparing for a record-breaking inflow of money as Americans bet on Sunday’s Super Bowl in Las Vegas.

A record 67.8 million American adults are expected to bet a combined $23.1 billion on the matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, the American Gaming Association said this week.

So far, the highest wager at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas is $1 million towards the San Francisco 49ers beating the Kansas City Chiefs, according to Caesars Sportsbook Assistant Director of Trading Adam Pullen.

“They’re very passionate about their teams, the Bay Area fans, and they come over and they use their passion at the betting windows,” Pullen said.

“You might get more people that maybe wouldn’t bet, are going to throw a bet down, just because everybody knows it’s here. So, yeah, records will be set.”

The number of American adults planning to bet on the NFL’s title game is up 35% from a survey conducted last year by the trade group representing the U.S. casino industry, while the estimated value of wagers is well up from $16 billion last year.

With the expansion of legal sports betting, the AGA said traditional Super Bowl wagers are expected to pass casual wagers for a second consecutive year.

Las Vegas native Robert Jansing, a 49ers fan, was putting his faith – and money – in favor of San Francisco at the Caesars Sportsbook.

“I don’t bet a lot, but on the Super Bowl, I always do the Super Bowl…biggest game of the year,” Jansing said. “And I won the last two. I bet on Kansas City last year and I bet on the Rams a year before. So we’ll see how it goes.”

“I Apologise To The Virat Kohli Family, Did A Blunder”: AB de Villiers, Asks Everyone To Respect Privacy

In an YouTube live, South Africa great AB de Villiers has apologised to the Kohli family.

Virat Kohli’s name is missing from the squad list for the last three Tests against England, which was announced on Saturday. “Virat Kohli will remain unavailable for selection for the remainder of the series due to personal reasons. The Board fully respects and supports Mr. Kohli’s decision,” the BCCI said in a release. There has been intense speculation about the nature of Virat Kohli’s ‘personal reason.’ In the midst of this Virat Kohli’s long-time teammate at Royal Challengers Bangalore, AB de Villiers last week said that the India star and Anushka Sharma’s “second child is on the way”.

On Friday, however, ABD did a U-Turn and said: “Family comes first and then Cricket. I had made a big mistake on my YouTube channel. That information was wrong and not true at all. I think whatever’s best for Virat’s family comes first. No one knows what’s happening there, all i can do is wish him well. Whatever the reason for his break, I hope he can comeback stronger, better and fresh from this.”

Now, in an YouTube live, the South Africa great has apologised to the Kohli family.

“My friend Virat Kohli is still not available. I cry out to everybody to give him the privacy that he deserves. Family comes first. No one knows what exactly is going on. I am asking all of us to respect that. I did bit of a blunder in my previous show and I apologise to the Kohli family for that,” AB de Villiers said in an YouTube Live.

“Just not nice. I shared information that was not confirmed at all so. I am begging everyone out there to respect him and his family and his private time. Hopefully, we will see Virat back, happy and scoring runs. Like he always does.”

In his previous YouTube live, de Villiers was asked if he has spoken to Virat Kohli and whether he is fine or not.

“All I know is he is fine. He is spending a bit of time with his family, that is the reason he is missing the first two Test matches. I am not going to confirm anything else. I cannot wait to see him back. He is fine, he is happy,” revealed AB de Villiers on his YouTube channel.

“Let me just see what he said. I just want to at least give you a little bit of love,” he added.

“So I wrote to him ‘Been wanting to check in with you for a while now biscuits. How are you?’. He said ‘Just need to be with my family right now’. Then I said I am doing well.

Virat Kohli Withdraws From Remaining Three Tests Against England: Report

Virat Kohli is expected to miss the last three Tests against England. (AFP Image)

India might miss the services of Virat Kohli in the last three Test matches against England as the batting maestro has reportedly withdrawn his name from the series. Kohli missed the first two Tests of the series due to personal reasons and it seems like now India have to deal without him in the remaining matches too.

According to a report on Indian Express, Kohli has already informed the team selectors on Friday in an online meeting that he has decided to withdraw his name from the remaining matches which will be played at Rajkot, Ranchi and Dharamsala.

Earlier, Kohli was picked in the squad for the first two Test but he withdrew his name three days prior to Hyderabad Test due to personal reasons.

The only word from the BCCI on Kohli came in a media advisory on January 22 where they informed about the former India captain’s withdrawal from the first two Tests in Hyderabad and Vizag respectively.

“Mr Virat Kohli has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to be withdrawn from the first two Tests of the upcoming IDFC First Bank Test series against England, citing personal reasons.

“Virat has spoken to Captain Rohit Sharma, the team management and the selectors and has emphasized that while representing the country has always been his top priority, certain personal situations demand his presence and undivided attention,” read a BCCI statement.

Meanwhile, the selectors have not announced the squad for the last three Tests yet as they are awaiting the fitness clearance of KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja who missed the Vizag Test due to injuries.

Ravindra Jadeja DENIES Father’s Allegations Made At Wife Rivaba; Star Indian Cricketer Calls It An Attempt To Tarnish Her Image

In the interview, it was reported that Anirudhsinh Jadeja, the father of Ravindra Jadeja, explicitly stated that he has absolutely no connection with his son

Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has denied the allegations made by his father, Anirudhsinh Jadeja, who reportedly accused the cricketer’s wife, Rivaba, of causing discord within the family. Ravindra, in a post on X, referred to his father’s interview with a Gujarati daily as “scripted” and characterized it as an effort to “tarnish” the image of his wife, Rivaba.

Accompanying a graphic post on X, the CSK star captioned a message in Gujarati, stating, “All the claims made in the baseless interview are devoid of meaning and accuracy. It presents a one-sided narrative, and I categorically reject the accusations. The efforts to smear the reputation of my wife are truly condemnable and inappropriate. While I have much to express, I choose not to do so publicly.”

In an interview with Divya Bhaskar, Anirudhsinh Jadeja asserted that he maintains “no connection whatsoever with Ravi (Ravindra Singh Jadeja) or his wife (Rivaba Jadeja).” He emphasized the lack of communication, stating, “We don’t call them, and they don’t call us.” Anirudhsinh alleged that a dispute arose within three months of Ravindra Jadeja’s marriage. He mentioned residing alone in Jamnagar, with Ravindra’s separate Panchvati bungalow also in the same city. Anirudhsinh expressed bewilderment, stating, “I don’t know what magic the wife has done…” as quoted by Divya Bhaskar.

Devastated Pakistan players inconsolable as Australia shatter U19 World Cup dreams to set up final vs India

Pakistan team was crestfallen, tears flowing down the cheeks of players after losing the U19 World Cup semifinal to Australia in a last-over thriller.

Pakistan were crestfallen. (Screengrab)

Pakistan played one of the most thrilling knockouts in the history of the Under19 World Cup, but in the end, it was Australia, who held their nerves and saw themselves through to the final. After a topsy-turvy 99 overs of play, the match boiled down to the last six balls, with Australia needing to knock off three. Zeeshan Ahmed ran in hoping to deliver the knockout punch but voice captain Raf MacMillan inside-edged the ball to the boundary. Ubaid Shah, Naseem’s brother, stationed at short fine leg gave it a chase but emerged second base. Australia had won by the narrowest margin of one wicket, when it all seemed lost a few overs ago, and set up a blockbuster final against India on Sunday.

As the ball touched the boundary, Umaid just lay there motionless. Zeeshan and captain Saad Baig were on the ground shattered, while the rest of the team were unable to lift themselves up. Tears were flowing down many a cheek. Pakistan were so near and yet so far. They made a match out of it after getting all out for 179 with Ali Raza doing the bulk of the damage with 4/34. But at last, it just wasn’t going to be. Heartbreak all around.

Things could have worked in Pakistan’s favour though, had they not wasted time in between overs. As a result, they were forced to place a fielder inside the 30-yard circle. Who knows, had Ubaid been in the deep, the result could have been something else. But it is what it is. Pakistan are on their way back. Australia are into the summit clash where a repeat of the men’s ICC World Cup 2023 awaits.

“Difficult to be the losing team, but we were short by 20-30 runs. We put in 100 percent effort. They played well. Boys fought really well. The way Ali Raza bowled was brilliant. Throughout the tournament, our bowling was good in the tournament. One team has to win, one has to lose, that’s the game,” losing captain Baig said at the post-match press conference.

China says Messi’s absence in Hong Kong match beyond ‘realm of sports’ as fury builds

Chinese state media, Hong Kong politicians and some fans swiftly condemned Argentine player Lionel Messi’s participation in a match in Japan on Wednesday after staying on the bench just days earlier in a highly anticipated game in Hong Kong.

Many in the financial hub were dismayed on Sunday when the 36-year-old did not come onto the field during a much hyped Inter Miami match in front of a sell-out crowd, with fans demanding answers and a refund.

Miami head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino said Messi was deemed unfit to play in Sunday’s friendly in Hong Kong, but he came on as a 60th minute substitute against Vissel Kobe on Wednesday.

China’s state-controlled Global Times said Messi’s absence posed many questions on the differential treatment for Hong Kong.
“The match in Hong Kong became the only one in Messi’s six pre-season friendly matches on this trip where he was absent. The situation … has magnified these doubts and suspicions on the integrity of Inter Miami and Messi himself.”

Some mainland fans travelled 12 hours from Xinjiang to Hong Kong to see Messi, the Global Times wrote, with the disappointment of the government and fans “entirely understandable. The impact of this incident has far exceeded the realm of sports.”

Messi apologised to his Chinese fans on Weibo, a Chinese platform similar to X, just ahead of the game on Wednesday, saying it was a real shame he was not able to play in Hong Kong due to an injury.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I always want to play… especially in these games where we travel so far and people are excited to see our games. Hopefully we can come back and play a game in Hong Kong,” he wrote in Chinese and Spanish.

The match in Hong Kong drew 40,000 fans, with spectators paying up to nearly HK$5,000 ($640) per ticket. In Tokyo, entire blocks of seating at the Japan National Stadium remained unoccupied, with just 28,614 tickets sold.

Hong Kong’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau said in a statement that, like the fans, it was very disappointed that Messi could not play in Hong Kong due to injury.

“However three days later, Messi was able to play actively and freely in Japan … the government hopes the organisers and teams can provide reasonable explanations.”

Sports lawmaker Kenneth Fok said the incident “sprinkled salt wounds” on Hong Kong fans, while senior government advisor Regina Ip wrote on X that “Hong Kong people hate Messi, Inter-Miami and the black hand behind them, for the deliberate and calculate snub to Hong Kong.”

India squad for next 3 Tests soon: No Virat Kohli; latest update on Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Siraj

India’s squad for the remaining three Tests against England will be announced soon. Virat Kohli is unlikely to feature but there is good news on Rahul, Jadeja.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma with teammates KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Virat Kohli during a group photograph(PTI)

The BCCI senior men’s selection committee led by former pacer Ajit Agarkar will meet on Thursday (virtually) to finalise the India squad for the remaining three Tests against England. Captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid are also likely to be present in the selection meeting. Rohit, notably, had a lengthy discussion with Agarkar almost immediately after India beat England in the second Test in Visakhapatnam. The selection meeting won’t be a straightforward one by any means. There are many questions to be answered but none bigger than the availability of Virat Kohli.

Kohli, who missed the first two Tests in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam will not be available for the third and fourth Tests and is also doubtful for the fifth and final Test in Dharamsala, reported ESPNCricinfo. The former captain has reportedly informed Rohit and the selectors about his decision. But expecting the series to go down the wire, the selectors may wait for Kohli’s decision on the final Test and announce the squad only for the third and fourth Tests in Rajkot and Ranchi.

Another big player who is unlikely to play any part in the series is pacer Mohammed Shami. The veteran fast bowler is yet to recover fully from the ankle injury he suffered during the ODI World Cup.

There is, however, good news for India elsewhere. KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja who missed the second Test due to injuries are likely to be included in the squad for the next two Tests. Rahul was out with a quadriceps injury while Jadeja hurt his hamstring while attempting a run in the series opener. Both of them are currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The NCA doctors haven’t submitted their final report to BCCI but both Rahul and Jadeja are reportedly recovering well and with the third Test in Rajkot still a week away, the selectors are optimistic about their return.

Siraj set to return; Bumrah won’t be rested from third Test
Pacer Mohammed Siraj, who was released from the squad for the second Test, is also confirmed to return to the squad to share the workload with Jasprit Bumrah. The Indian team management is reluctant to play four spinners and hence, Siraj is almost certain to straightaway come into the XI in Rajkot in place of Mukesh Kumar, who struggled with his line and length in the previous Test.

A few media reports were suggesting that Bumrah might be rested for the third Test but the newly-crowned No.1-ranked Test bowler is set to feature in Rajkot. Bumrah has been the leader of India’s bowling attack and the team management doesn’t want to rest him at this crucial stage. Besides, the 9-day gap between the second and third Tests is believed to be enough to manage Bumrah’s workload. However, if India win the third Test then chances are high that Bumrah will be rested from the fourth one in Ranchi as there is very little gap between them.

Sachin Dhas, Uday Saharan Fifties Give India Two-Wicket Win Over South Africa, Place In U19 World Cup Final

Fuelled by splendid fifties by Sachin Dhas and captain Uday Saharan, India battled past SA by two wickets to storm into the final, their fifth consecutive of the ICC Under-19 World Cup.

Fuelled by splendid fifties by Sachin Dhas and captain Uday Saharan, defending champions India battled past South Africa by two wickets to storm into the final, their fifth consecutive of the ICC Under-19 World Cup on Tuesday. Dhas (96, 95 balls, 11×4, 1×6) and Saharan (81, 124, 6×4), who were India’s guiding forces in the last match against Nepal with a hundred each, garnered 171 runs for the fifth wicket as India hunted down the target of 245 with just 7 balls to spare. India will face either Australia or Pakistan in the summit clash to be played at this venue on Sunday, searching for their sixth trophy in the marquee event. But the beginning of India’s chase resembled a debris yard, losing four wickets for just 32 runs in the 12th over.

The South African new-ball bowler Kwena Maphaka jolted India in the first ball of their innings, dismissing Adarsh Singh with a nasty climbing delivery that the batter had no choice other than snicking to wicket-keeper Lhuan-dre Pretorious.

His partner Tristan Luus soon joined the fun with the wickets of Musheer Khan, Arshin Kulkarni and Priyanshu Moliya as all three India batters were indecisive outside the off-stump while hanging their bats to dry.

But the Indians found their saviours in Dhas and Saharan, who dished out innings of vastly contrasting nature and tempo.

Dhas was aggressive despite the situation his team was in, but Saharan was happy to keep his end going.

Dhas’ knock was a treatise on playing cross-batted shots as he cracked a six, pulled fours besides those well-placed nudges through the vacant spots on the on-side.

Saharan, on the other hand, was more traditional but was not entirely hesitant to bring out an exquisite drive or rasping cut whenever an opportunity was there for him to do so.

Dhas reached his fifty in 47 balls, fittingly, with a pull off pacer Riley Norton and Saharan reached his half-century in 88 balls with a cover drive off off-spinner Juan James.

In the process, Saharan also became the highest run-getter in this World Cup with 389 runs.

But these two youngsters showed immense maturity not to squander the start they got; piling runs to keep the pressure squarely on the hosts.

A second hundred in this event was there for his taking, but Maphaka, the tournament’s highest wicket-taker so far, deceived him with a slower ball that Dhas just managed to scoop to David Teeger at covers.

But the breakthrough came a wee bit late as India hung on to squeeze past the line notwithstanding the run out of Saharan when the scores were level.

Earlier, bowlers played a significant part in shaping India’s victory, limiting 2014 champions South Africa to 244 for 7 on a pitch that offered them considerable assistance.

SA found fight through wicketkeeper batter Lhuan-dre Pretorious (76, 102 balls) and Richard Seletswane (64, 100 balls) after early blows, but those efforts were not enough to rattle the visitors.

Pretorious and Seletswane milked 72 runs for the third wicket but they took nearly 22 overs for that.

The South African top-order just could not get going against India pacers Naman Tiwari (1/52) and Raj Limbani (3/60) who found appreciable pace, bounce and carry from the Willowmoore track.

Even when Seletswane and Pretorious were reconstructing the SA innings, they failed to score at a brisk pace, as the run-rate for a large part remained under four.

Ben Stokes-led England team leaves India after losing 2nd Test in Visakhapatnam

After losing the second Test in Visakhapatnam by 106 runs, the England cricket team decided to leave India and fly to Abu Dhabi. Just like the series-opener in Hyderabad, the second match in Visakhapatnam ended in four days with the hosts India levelling the series with a commanding all-round performance. With the third Test in Rajkot nine days away, the Ben Stokes-led side thought it would be better to utilise the break relaxing.

The England cricketers are set to indulge in some golf and other recreational activities in Abu Dhabi before returning to India ahead of the third assignment of what has been a fascinating contest between and ball in Rajkot on February 15.

The team management led by captain Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum believe the break would allow the England players to freshen up and resume their bid to repeat what the Alastair Cooks men did in 2012

England prepared for the highly anticipated Test series against India with an extensive conditioning camp in Abu Dhabi instead of arriving in the subcontinent early for practice matches.

During the Abu Dhabi camp before the series, the England team spent a lot of time working on ways to tackle the Indian spinners. While they rallied to emerge winners in the opener, the English batters were blown away by Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant exhibition of reverse swing bowling in the first innings of the second Test before succumbing in a record 399-run chase to a disciplined Indian bowling unit in their second innings.

‘We’re a level-head team’: Ben Stokes after loss in Vizag
India dismissed England for 292 runs in their second innings on day four to register a series-levelling 106-run win in the second Test on Monday.

“Being 2-0 up would have been great for us, but that’s the great thing about a five-match series, it’s the end of the series where everything counts,” Stokes told reporters.

“We’re a very level-headed team and that allows us to put things behind us, move on to the next thing and concentrate there.”

The FIFA World Cup 26™ stadiums

The next FIFA World Cup is on the horizon, as Canada, Mexico and USA prepare to host the biggest tournament in sport.

The FIFA World Cup 26™ will take place over three countries for the very first time, with Canada, Mexico and USA set to share hosting duties in a ground-breaking edition of sport’s greatest event.

A total of 16 stadiums have been chosen to host the games, the most since Korea/Japan 2002, with some truly spectacular venues set to showcase the best in the beautiful game.

Read all about which stadiums will play host to the world in 2026 with FIFA.

Canada

Toronto Stadium

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Capacity: 45,000 Opened: 2007 FIFA World Cup 26™ fixtures: Five group-stage matches and a Round of 32 tie

Toronto Stadium was purpose-built as Canada hosted the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2007™ and staged the final where Argentina emerged triumphant, with Sergio Aguero claiming the Golden Ball and Golden Boot.

The venue, which has an English Premier League-style roof canopy and steep stands on either end of the ground, played host to the climax of Canada’s campaign to reach the FIFA World Cup 2022™, when their ticket to Qatar was secured with victory over Jamaica.

That success ended Canada’s 36-year absence from the global showpiece, and extended their impressive record of having never lost a competitive match at Toronto Stadium, which will be welcoming FIFA tournaments back to the city having also hosted the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup™ in 2014.

Location: Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada
Capacity: 54,000
Opened: 1983
FIFA World Cup 26™ fixtures: Five group-stage matches, a Round of 32 tie and a Round of 16 contest

Now in its 40th year of existence, BC Place Vancouver remains a jaw-dropping piece of architecture situated on the banks of the False Creek inlet.

The area – which has recently undergone renovations – is the home of MLS team Vancouver Whitecaps and the Canadian Football League’s (CFL) BC Lions, and has also occasionally hosted the Canada national team.

One of the most memorable matches at BC Place Vancouver came when the venue hosted the final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015™, where USA defeated defending champions Japan 5-2, thanks in no small part to a three-goal haul from Carli Lloyd inside the opening 15 minutes.

Mexico
Estadio Azteca Mexico City
Location: Mexico City, Mexico
Capacity: 83,000
Opened: 1966
FIFA World Cup 26™ fixtures: Three group-stage matches, a Round of 32 tie and a Round of 16 contest

A true coliseum of world football and the first to host a third FIFA World Cup™, Estadio Azteca Mexico City – which welcomed the likes of Pele and Diego Maradona across two pulsating World Cup finals in 1970 and 1986 – will once again take centre stage.

The arena’s day job is to host both Club America and Cruz Azul of Liga MX as well as the Mexico national team, while Pumas, Atlante, Atletico Espanyol and Necaxa have all previously played their football here.

Estadio Azteca Mexico City was the venue for the final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup™ in 2011, when a capacity crowd of 98,943 set the record for the number of supporters at any game in the history of the prestigious youth tournament.

Estadio Guadalajara
Location: Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico
Capacity: 48,000
Opened: 2010
FIFA World Cup 26™ fixtures: Four group-stage matches

Built on raised ground and with a spherical, coliseum-like design, Estadio Guadalajara is certainly one of the more eye-catching venues set to hold matches at the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

Inaugurated in 2010, the stadium is home during the regular season to C.D. Guadalajara, who have enjoyed their fair share of success there. The men’s team secured their historic double title campaign, league and cup of the Clausura 2017 tournament, and the 2018 Concacaf Champions League victory, while the two titles of the women’s team in 2017 and 2022 add to the trophy haul.

Estadio Guadalajara was one of the main venues for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2011 and hosted the Pan-American Games the same year.

IND vs ENG: Jasprit Bumrah Scripts History, Becomes Fastest Indian Pacer to Claim 150 Test Wickets

Jasprit Bumrah finished with figures of 6/45 in the first innings of the 2nd Test in Hyderabad. (Image: AP)

Jasprit Bumrah continues to shine for India in the longest format of the sport. He reached his milestone 150th Test wicket after dismissing the English skipper Ben Stokes in the first innings of the second Test at Hyderabad. The wicket of Ben Stokes also makes him the fastest Indian pacer to reach the milestone as well.

The fast bowler came around the wicket against Ben Stokes to get the delivery which was nipping back in and deceived the batter completely as it beat him and went on to crash onto the stumps.

This is not the first time today he managed to get the batter clean-bowled, he also managed to dismiss the in-form Ollie Pope who had scored 196 runs in the first Test with a toe-crushing yorker to get him clean-bowled. He then went on to grab the wickets of Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow as well.

Another notable feat for Bumrah is that he has taken the fewest number of deliveries among Indian bowlers to reach the milestone as well which shows his immense wicket-taking ability in the Test format for India.

Soon after the wicket of Ben Stokes he also managed to get the wicket of Tom Hartley who was looking to go after the bowlers and bring down the deficit of runs as well with the boundaries. Hartley looked to go again but edged the delivery to the man at slips who took the catch there as he managed to bring up a class five-wicket haul as well.

Another interesting stat to add here is that after Bumrah’s heroics today, the last time an Indian seamer dismissed the opposition batters batting at the #3, #4, #5 and #6 in an innings for a Test match being played in India was none other than the legendary Indian skipper, Kapil Dev who finished with 9/83 against the West Indies in Ahmedabad in 1983.

Son Heung-min breaks Australian hearts with thunderous 104th minute free-kick winner in Asian Cup quarterfinals

Son Heung-min scores through free-kick to send South Korea to Asian Cup semi-finals(X)

Son Heung-min came through in clutch moments for South Korea, securing a 2-1 victory over Australia in extra time with a spectacular free-kick. This win propelled South Korea into the Asian Cup semi-final against Jordan. It was a win in the most dramatic fashion for the Koreans, as they seemed almost out of the tournament after being unable to open the scoring at the end of 90 minutes.

Australia took the lead in the 42nd minute after Hwang In-beom’s defensive error allowed Connor Metcalfe to deliver a cross for Craig Goodwin to score with a volley at the back post. However, South Korea found a late equalizer in the 96th minute when Son Heung-min was fouled in the box, and Hwang Hee-chan calmly converted the penalty.

With momentum on their side, South Korea secured victory in extra time as Son curled in a magnificent free-kick from outside the box in the 104th minute to seal their spot in the quarter-finals.

‘He is even above Don Bradman’: Former India cricketers go ga-ga after Yashasvi Jaiswal century pummels England

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 179* left former cricketers stumped as they lavished massive praise on the young Indian opener.

Yashasvi Jaiswal kisses his helmet after scoring a century on the first day of the second Test.(AP)

Trailing 0-1 in the ongoing five-match series, India posted 336/6 by stumps on Day 1 of the ongoing second Test in Vizag, on Friday. The home side’s second-highest individual score was 34, so then how did they cross 300? Well, most of the work was done by young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who remained unbeaten at 179* off 257 balls, packed with 17 fours and five sixes.

It was also Jaiswal’s second Test ton, and he will be looking to get his first double hundred on Day 2. The 22-year-old got a half-century in the first Test, and went a notch higher in the second, showing stunning stroke-play to reach his hundred, getting to the landmark with a six over long-on. Other batters who came and stitched stands with him lost their wickets but Jaiswal carried on.

After his knock, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) cricketer received plenty of praise from former cricketers. Former India opener Aakash Chopra hailed Jaiswal’s performance and went a level higher, stating that he ‘is even above Sir Don Bradman at this point in time’.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, “The most fantastic performance came from Yashasvi Jaiswal’s bat. How well the kid batted. Jimmy Anderson was the only pacer and he kept leaving his deliveries. He gave a lot of respect to James Anderson’s bowling.”

More praise for Yashasvi Jaiswal

“When spin came, he hit two fours in the first over. After that, he showed why this player is so special. His conversion rate of fifties into hundreds for players who have 10 or more centuries in first-class cricket, he is even above Sir Don Bradman at this point in time,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Manjrekar pointed out Jaiswal’s approach towards England’s James Anderson and said that it ‘was an excellent sign.’ Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, he said, “It wasn’t like Jimmy Anderson didn’t bowl much, he bowled a lot. I don’t think a single boundary was hit by Jaiswal against him. That is maturity. He realized this is a bowler who’s not going to give him hittable balls.”

Ravichandran Ashwin eyes iconic 500, chance to surpass Kumble; Full list of records in line for India star in 2nd Test

Ravichandran Ashwin is only four wickets away from joining the elite 500 club in Test cricket.

Ravichandran Ashwin in action during the 1st India vs England Test in Hyderabad(PTI)

As Team India gears up to face England in the second Test of the series in Visakhapatnam, all eyes will be on off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. The senior India bowler stands on the cusp of history with 496 Test wickets to his name. With four more wickets, he will become the only second Indian bowler to enter the 500-wicket club.

Ashwin has been the mainstay of the Indian Test team for many years and has been one of the most successful bowlers – particularly in the subcontinental conditions – for the side. The veteran off-spinner will aim to not only reach the milestone 500-figure but also help India level the series in Vizag, as the side endured a shock 28-run loss in the opening match in Hyderabad.

As the 36-year-old Ashwin stares at the incredible feat, let’s take a detailed look at all the potential records the India star can break in the second Test:

The iconic 500
Ravichandran Ashwin’s six dismissals in the 1st Test propelled him to 496 wickets in his Test career. Should he reach 500 wickets in the upcoming Test, he will join Anil Kumble as the only second Indian and become only the fifth spinner in cricket history to achieve this feat, further solidifying his status as one of the game’s all-time greats.

Here’s the list of the highest wicket-takers in Tests (among spinners)

  • Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka) – 800
  • Shane Warne (Australia) – 708
  • Anil Kumble (India) – 619
  • Nathan Lyon (Australia) – 517
  • Ravichandran Ashwin (India) – 496*

A ‘century’ against England:

Ashwin’s prowess against England is well-documented, and with just six more scalps, he will become the first Indian bowler to claim 100 wickets against England in Tests, a testament to his consistency and dominance against top opposition.

The Indian spinner had surpassed Kumble in terms of most wickets against the English side in the previous Test and remains only behind Bhagwath Chandrashekhar (95 wickets) on the list.

Major milestone on Indian soil

Nearing 350 wickets in Tests on home soil, Ashwin is poised to become the only second Indian bowler and fifth overall to achieve this remarkable feat, cementing his legacy as one of India’s most successful spinners.

The off-spinner is seven wickets away from the key milestone. Interestingly, Kumble had finished his career on exactly 350 wickets on Indian soil, meaning Ashwin has an opportunity to surpass the India legend in the second Test. Here’s the list of highest wicket-takers on home soil:

Watch: Lionel Messi Shocked, Cristiano Ronaldo Ecstatic As Al-Nassr Thrash Inter Miami 6-0

Al Nassr crushed Inter Miami 6-0 as injury ruled Cristiano Ronaldo out of a much-hyped showdown with Lionel Messi, who was limited to a late substitute appearance.

Al Nassr crushed Inter Miami 6-0 as injury ruled Cristiano Ronaldo out of a much-hyped showdown with Lionel Messi, who was limited to a late substitute appearance in Thursday’s friendly in Riyadh. Ronaldo’s calf injury prompted Al Nassr to cancel their two-game China tour last week and it denied him what could have potentially been a last match against longtime rival Messi. The pair have won a combined 13 Ballon d’Or awards, with Messi taking home the prize for a record eighth time last year. Their most recent meeting came in January 2023 when Ronaldo played in a Saudi select team beaten 5-4 by Messi’s PSG. Instead, Brazilian Talisca upstaged the illustrious duo with a hat-trick as the Saudi Pro League side demolished their Major League Soccer opponents, scoring three times in the first 12 minutes.

Otavio drilled in the opener as Miami lost the ball trying to play out from the back, bringing Ronaldo to his feet to applaud from the stands.

A sliding Talisca turned in Al Nassr’s second as the visitors again paid the price for conceding possession near their own box.

Aymeric Laporte scored the goal of the night, catching Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender off his line as he belted in a long-range free-kick from deep inside his own half.

Talisca got his second from the penalty spot minutes after half-time and Mohammed Maran looped in a header to compound Miami’s misery.

The American side were clearly feeling the effects of a globe-trotting pre-season tour, but the gulf in class was also stark, despite the presence of former Barcelona stars Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

Talisca completed his treble and performed Ronaldo’s signature celebration, before Messi trotted on for the final seven minutes with his team trailing by six goals.

Miami continue their preparations for the new MLS season, which starts February 21, by heading to Asia for games in Hong Kong and Japan.

Paris 2024 opening ceremony attendees estimate cut to 300,000

The number of people set to attend the opening ceremony of this year’s Olympics has been estimated at about 300,000, French Interior minister Gerald Darmanin said on Wednesday, around half as many as were previously expected.
The opening ceremony will be a six kilometre parade along the River Seine on July 26. It will take place amid security concerns as France is on a high terrorism alert.
“The idea is that there will be 100,000 people on the lower quays (with paying tickets) and more than 220,000 people on the upper quays (with free tickets),” Darmanin told French TV channel France 2.

“Then there are all those who live there and who will be able to rent, have parties along the Seine.”
The last time Darmanin estimated the number of attendees was in May 2023, when he said up to 600,000 were expected at the opening ceremony.
Paris 2024 organisers said the estimate was not final.
“As the French government has indicated, the final decision on the size of the stadium will be taken at the end of the consultation process in spring 2024,” they said in a statement to Reuters.

Sarfaraz Khan Debut, Big Changes In Bowling, Harbhajan Singh Picks India XI For 2nd Test Against England

Harbhajan Singh suggested huge changes in the bowling attack as he picked the playing XI for the second Test match against England starting February 2.

Former Indian cricket team spinner Harbhajan Singh suggested huge changes in the bowling attack as he picked the playing XI for the second Test match against England starting February 2. Harbhajan said that Sarfaraz Khan should be handed his Test debut in the absence of KL Rahul with all-rounder Washington Sundar replacing the injured Ravindra Jadeja. He also advised Rohit Sharma to go with four spinners in the bowling department with Kuldeep Yadav replacing Mohammed Siraj. That means that Jasprit Bumrah will be playing as the only specialist pacer in the team picked by the former Indian cricket team star.

“I think Sarfaraz should be played at No. 5. He has been scoring a lot of runs in domestic cricket and even for India A in the matches against England Lions,” Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel.

Harbhajan said that the decision to play Kuldeep Yadav or Mohammed Siraj will depend on how the wicket looks in Vishakhapatnam. Reports suggest that the track can be friendly to spinners and in that case, Harbhajan suggested that Kuldeep should be added keeping his World Cup form in mind.

Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh was named the Allan Border Medalist at the 2024 Australian Cricket Awards on Wednesday while Ashleigh Gardner bagged the Belinda Clark Award. Marsh made a return to the Test format in the Ashes 2023 at Headingley and scored a run-a-ball 118. The right-handed batter went on to score 441 runs with an average of 49 during last year’s ODI World Cup, which also included a 177* against Bangladesh.

“I’m a bit fat at times and I love a beer but you see the best in me always and you’ve changed my life. For your support and your leadership, Patty, playing under you is a dream,” Marsh said during the event as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.

“I often spoke to my wife about… that I just wanted to get one more crack at it, and it’s been amazing. She gave me the perspective on life that I needed,” Marsh added.

Canada may appeal after Russia get bronze in 2022 Olympic figure skating despite Valieva ban

Skate Canada is considering appealing against the International Skating Union’s (ISU) decision to award the Russian figure skating team bronze in the 2022 Beijing Olympics despite the disqualification of Kamila Valieva.
The teenager received a four-year doping ban on Monday, effective from December 2021, stripping the ROC of its gold medal in the team event nearly two years after the competition.
It was thought that Canada, who finished fourth in the event, would be promoted to bronze.

But the ISU said the Russian Olympic Committee’s (ROC) total score even after Valieva’s marks were erased was still a point better than the Canadians.
“Skate Canada is extremely disappointed with the International Skating Union’s position on the long-awaited awarding of medals,” the national federation said in a statement.
Skate Canada argued that the ISU was not applying Rule 353, which states that “competitors having finished the competition and who initially placed lower than the disqualified competitor will move up accordingly in their placement”.
“Skate Canada strongly disagrees with the ISU’s position on this matter and will consider all options to appeal this decision,” the national federation added.
The Canadian Olympic Committee said it was working with Skate Canada on exploring a potential appeal.
“We recognize how difficult this process is for all the athletes and give our support to the Canadian skaters who made us so proud,” it said in a statement. “This is a reminder of how harmful doping is and how crucial it is that we have a fair and safe sport system at home and around the world.”

In its long-awaited ruling, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) found Valieva guilty of committing an anti-doping rule violation that rocked the Beijing Olympics when news of it first emerged and frustrated competitors who have been left waiting for their medals ever since.
The ISU published an amended final points table on Tuesday that has the United States bumped up to gold with 65 points, Japan winning silver with 63 and Russia taking bronze with 54.
Canada — represented by Roman Sadovsky, Madeline Schizas, Kristen Moore-Towers, Michael Marinaro, Vanessa James, Eric Radford, Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier — scored 53.
“The ISU is in close contact with the International Olympic Committee and the relevant ISU member federations in regard to the implementation of this decision,” figure skating’s governing body said.

4 NHL players have been charged with sexual assault in a 2018 case in Canada, their lawyers say

NHL players Carter Hart of the Philadelphia Flyers, Michael McLeod and Cal Foote of the New Jersey Devils and Dillon Dube of the Calgary Flames have been charged with sexual assault in connection with an alleged assault by several members of Canada’s 2018 world junior team.

Attorneys representing Hart, McLeod, Foote and Dube said Tuesday that each player has been charged with sexual assault by police in London, Ontario. They denied any wrongdoing on behalf of their clients.

Hart’s lawyers, Megan Savard and Riaz Sayani, said their client is facing one count of sexual assault, adding, “He is innocent and will provide a full response to this false accusation in the proper forum, a court of law.”

Legal teams representing McLeod and Dube said the players would be pleading not guilty.

“(We) will vigorously defend the case,” McLeod’s attorneys, David Humphrey and Seth Weinstein, said in a statement. “We ask that the public respect Mr. McLeod’s privacy, and his family’s privacy. Because the matter is now before the court, we will not comment further at this time.”

Lawyers for each player say they will plead not guilty in London, Ontario. (AP Photo/Paul Sancya, File)

Dube’s lawyers, Louis Strezos and Kayleigh Davidson, said their client “maintains his innocence (and) will defend the allegations in court.”

Foote’s lawyer, Julianna Greenspan, said her client was “innocent of the charge and will defend himself against this allegation to clear his name.”

“What is most critical at this time is the presumption of innocence, and the right to a fair trial that everyone in Canada is entitled to,” Greenspan said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press. “As the matter is before the court, I ask that Cal’s and his family’s privacy be respected.”

A Devils spokesperson said the organization is aware of the reports and have been told to refer all inquiries to the league. A Flyers spokesman echoed a similar sentiment, saying the team “will respond appropriately to this very serious matter when the outcomes of the investigations are made public.”

Agaratala’s ILS Hospital has released an official statement on Mayank Agarwal’s health, hours after the cricketer was admitted to the facility’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Agarwal was rushed to a local hospital after falling ill just before his New Delhi-bound flight was about to take off on Tuesday.

Uttam Singh slammed a hat-trick as the Indian men’s hockey team secured a convincing 9-4 victory against Kenya in the 5th-8th place classification match of the FIH Hockey5s men’s World Cup on Tuesday. Uttam (5th, 25th, 26th minutes) netted thrice while Manjeet (6th), Pawan Rajbhar (10th), Mandeep Mor (15th), Mohammed Raheel (17th, 25th), and Gurjot Singh (28th)were the other scorers for India. For Kenya, Moses Ademba (12th, 14th, 27th) and captain Ivan Ludiali (24th) were the goalscorers. Right from the start, India took control of the game, challenging Kenya’s goalkeeper multiple times in the initial minutes.

Despite Kenya’s efforts to counterattack, India maintained aggressive play.

The breakthrough for India came when Uttam and Manjeet scored in quick succession to hand India early lead.

Continuing their relentless assault, India kept up the pressure on Kenya’s defence, resulting in Rajbhar adding another goal with a powerful shot.

Kenya, however, narrowed the gap with two quick goals from Moses Ademba.

Mandeep then scored another goal for India, ensuring a 4-2 lead at half-time.

The second half saw India extending their lead with Raheel scoring on a counterattack.

Russian figure skater Valieva banned for doping, ROC loses Olympic gold -CAS

Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva received a four-year doping ban on Monday, effectively stripping the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) of its gold medal in the team event at the 2022 Beijing Winter Games nearly two years after the competition.
In its long-awaited ruling, the highest court in sport found Valieva guilty of committing an anti-doping rule violation that rattled the Beijing Olympics and frustrated competitors who are still waiting for their medals from the event to be allocated.

“Kamila Valieva is found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation and sanctioned with a four-year period of ineligibility commencing on 25 December 2021,” the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said.
The court added that all of Valieva’s competitive results achieved since that date are voided, including the gold medal she helped ROC win in the team event at the 2022 Games.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), one of the parties that brought the case to CAS, welcomed the decision, describing it as a victory for fair sport.
“I think for WADA and for clean sport, it means that after following due process a fair result to all athletes has been rendered by the Court of Arbitration for Sport,” WADA director general Olivier Niggli told Reuters.
“Even though the process might be a bit tortuous, the end result has been and is to the satisfaction of the clean athletes.
“It’s been a long, long case and we acknowledge the fact that it took a long time to get resolved.
“But we had to appeal this case from a decision initially that basically cleared the athlete of any fault.
“CAS has agreed with our position, which we are pleased with.”
In his response to the CAS decision, WADA President Witold Banka said the doping of minors should be a criminal offence.
“Anyone who dopes children should be in prison,” Banka said in a statement, opens new tab.
“We encourage governments to consider criminalizing the supply of performance-enhancing drugs to minors.”
Russian athletes already faced scrutiny at the 2022 Games over separate doping sanctions and competed in Beijing as ROC athletes, without their flag or national anthem as punishment for tampering with laboratory data that could have identified drug cheats.
Russia denied running a state-sponsored doping programme.
In comments carried by RIA news agency, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed Monday’s ruling as politically motivated.
“WAR DECLARED” ON RUSSIAN SPORT, ROC SAYS
The ROC said in a statement: “In effect war has been declared on Russian sport and, as we can see, no holds are barred.”
The committee said the CAS “had long since ceased” to be worthy of objectivity and impartiality.
The CAS panel determined there had been no scope for Valieva, who was 15 at the time of the offence, to be treated with more leniency than an adult found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation.
Valieva tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine, which prevents angina, at the Russian national championships in December 2021.
Her team has said the positive test could have been due to a mix-up with her grandfather’s heart medication.
The result of the positive doping test was only made known a day after Valieva helped the ROC win gold in the team event in Beijing in February 2022.
“While any sense of true justice has been denied by the unbelievable and unnecessary delay in this case, we are incredibly pleased for clean athletes that this sad saga has finally come to an end,” said Travis Tygart, CEO of the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).
“At the same time, our hearts hurt for yet another Russian athlete who the system has failed.”
Valieva, who became the first woman to land a quadruple jump at the Olympics during the team event, had been favourite to win the singles gold but missed out on an individual medal after dropping to fourth place with an error-laden free skate.
Her suspension will be lifted in time for the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Games.
MEDAL ALLOCATION
During the Beijing Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided no medals for the team figure skating event would be presented until Valieva’s case had been resolved.
The United States took silver behind the Russians, with Japan getting the bronze and Canada placing fourth.
American figure skaters have repeatedly expressed their frustration over the delay in receiving the team medals, with Vincent Zhou saying the global anti-doping system was failing athletes.
“Today is a day we have been eagerly awaiting for two years, as it is a significant win not only for Team USA athletes but also for athletes worldwide who practice fair play and advocate for clean sport,” said Sarah Hirshland, chief executive officer of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

Uttarakhand’s ‘Delhi Boy’ Deepak Dhapola Wreaks Havoc With Consecutive Hat-tricks

Uttarakhand bowler Deepak Dhapola

Uttarakhand fast bowler Deepak Dhapola has made it a habit of producing eye-catching performances. Right from his debut for the state during the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season to the ongoing campaign, Deepak has proven to be a reliable wicket-taking bowler who uses the new ball to inflict damage thanks to his ability to generate swing and consistently pitch the ball in the right areas.

Deepak dreamt of playing professional cricket for Delhi but after waiting in the wings for several years and not getting a chance, Deepak decided it was time to move on. He switched to Uttarakhand and on debut, produced a breath-taking show in Dehradun, running through the Bihar batting line-up to finish with a match haul of 9/61 in a 10-wicket win for which he won the player-of-the-match award.

He would finish the season with 45 wickets from 8 games at an average of 15.51.

Cut to the ongoing Ranji Trophy campaign and Deepak has again hit the headlines. This time for taking hat-tricks in consecutive matches. His first hat-trick came against Puducherry in Dehradun and the next against Delhi in Mohali.

Uttarakhand are currently taking on Delhi in their fourth match of the Elite Group D of Ranji Trophy 2023-24 at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, a contest that got underway on Friday. After taking a first-innings lead of 92 runs, Uttarakhand left Delhi stunned by reducing them to 11/5 inside five overs in their second dig on Saturday.

The 33-year-old Deepak inflicted the maximum damage as he started the demolition job of Delhi’s batting order with the sixth delivery of their second innings itself, getting rid of opener Arpit Rana for a six-ball duck. He then took two wickets off the first two deliveries of his next over including the scalps of Yash Dhull and Kshitiz Sharma to complete his hat-trick.

Speaking to News18 CricketNext after finishing Day 2 with figures of 4/43 from 11 overs, which also helped him complete 100 wickets in first-class cricket, Deepak said the plan was to exploit the helpful pitch before it got better for batting.

“The pitch was behaving quite well in the afternoon and we had to make use of the new ball. Eventually, it got better (for batting). In Mohali, the pitch on the first day gives a lot of help (to the bowlers) and it keeps settling as the game progresses. So our plan was to keep the new ball in the right areas and keep creating chances. So I ended up doing that and got the wickets,” Deepak said from Mohali.

Deepak initially trained with and started playing professionally under the guidance of former Delhi cricketer and coach Rajkumar Sharma, famous for being the childhood coach of Indian batting superstar Virat Kohli.

“I started playing professional cricket under him (Rajkumar),” Deepak said. “I played cricket in Delhi for nearly 10-12 years. I was in the standbys, I even played in Calcutta (for some time). I kept taking wickets but didn’t get a chance (for the state teams). So I decided to move to Uttarakhand. By god’s grace and hard work, I have been taking wickets (regularly).”

Having started his FC career with a memorable debut and a season full of wickets, the journey ahead for Deepak proved challenging. He spent the major part of the next two seasons on the sidelines, recovering from a knee and then a back injury.

Deepak credited Cricket Association of Uttarakhand (CAU) secretary Mahim Verma for backing him during the testing time.

“For two years I was injured (2019-20 and 2020-21). And coming back from those injuries was quite a challenge. Mahim Verma sir supported me a lot during that phase and I was able to make a successful comeback thanks to him,” he said.

“Obviously, because of the stiff competition, making a comeback to a state team is always a big challenge. Once you disappear from the scene, you get sidelined and so winning your place back becomes difficult. Mahim sir did back me a lot,” he added.

He also mentioned the role of Abhimanyu Cricket Academy, run by RP Easwaran – the father of Bengal cricketer Abhimanyu Easwaran – for providing him the support that helped his recovery.

Xavi Hernandez To Quit ‘Cruel, Unpleasant’ Job As Barcelona Coach At End Of Season

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez said he will quit his “cruel and unpleasant” job at the end of the season after his struggling team were beaten 5-3 by Villarreal on Saturday in La Liga

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez said he will quit his “cruel and unpleasant” job at the end of the season after his struggling team were beaten 5-3 by Villarreal on Saturday in La Liga. “On June 30 I will leave the club, it’s a decision I have taken with the president, with the staff,” Xavi told reporters. Champions Barcelona, third in the top flight, are 10 points behind leaders Real Madrid with their title defence virtually over. “The feeling of being Barca coach is cruel, unpleasant, it feels like people lack respect for you a lot of the time,” said Xavi.

“It’s terrible on a mental health level, your morale … to the point where you think there is no sense in continuing.”

After elimination in the Copa del Rey by Athletic Bilbao this week and a thrashing by Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final earlier in January, Xavi said he made the decision for the good of the club.

“I’ve thought about the club … and above all the players,” said Xavi.

“I have the feeling that I am doing the right thing, that I am acting with common sense.

“I think the club needs a change of dynamics, the dynamic is very negative.”

Xavi, who took over in November 2021, led Barcelona to the Spanish Super Cup and league title last season, with the team built around a strong defence.

However this year they are fragile at the back and Saturday saw Barcelona let in five goals in La Liga at home for the first time since 1963.

Xavi said even if Barcelona won the Champions League he would not change his mind and stay.

The coach, 44, still thinks his team can win trophies this season.

“I am more optimistic than ever with this change of dynamic … we’ll go for La Liga, it’s very difficult but we will fight,” he added.

“I have not spoken to the players about it, I saw how down they were today and I will talk to them tomorrow, and that’s one of the reasons for it.”

‘Impossible’ job

Xavi, who starred in midfield for Barcelona between 1998-2015, said his departure had been inevitable.

“It’s happened to every coach that has been at this club, it’s impossible that there’s a (Alex) Ferguson of Barcelona,” explained the coach, referring to the legendary Manchester United manager.

Xavi said if the team had beaten Villarreal he would not have announced he was stepping down on Saturday, but he had made the decision “some time ago”.

“I was a solution two years and three months ago (when he was appointed), but now, thinking with my heart and about the club, for who I want the best, the best thing is for me to go on June 30,” added Xavi.

“I have to thank the president (Joan Laporta) for his confidence, we have a great president.”

Barcelona players spoke after the defeat by Villarreal before Xavi’s decision, saying the team’s collapse was not the coach’s fault.

Sabalenka overpowers Zheng to retain Australian Open crown

Tennis – Australian Open – Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia – January 27, 2024 Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka kisses the trophy to celebrate winning the final against China’s Qinwen Zheng REUTERS/Issei Kato Acquire Licensing Rights

Aryna Sabalenka produced an utterly dominant display to become the first woman in 11 years to retain the Australian Open title and send out a warning to her rivals with her second Grand Slam title on Saturday.
The Belarusian blew away Zheng Qinwen 6-3 6-2 in 76 minutes with a show of power that overwhelmed the Chinese 12th seed, emulating compatriot Victoria Azarenka’s 2012-13 feat by winning the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup back-to-back.

Sabalenka came into the match without having dropped a set at the year’s first major and stayed perfect to join Ash Barty, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Lindsay Davenport in the elite club of players to have done so this century.
“I’m speechless right now,” Sabalenka said at her press conference as she sipped a glass of wine. “I don’t know how to describe my emotions. But definitely I’m super, super happy and proud of everything I was able to achieve so far.
“Yeah, just happy with the level I played today. She’s a great player and very tough opponent.”
Sabalenka dropped only one set at last year’s tournament and her dominance this year is a further reflection of the maturity and emotional control she has built in the last 12 months.
“I didn’t want to be a player who won it and disappeared,” Sabalenka said. “I wanted to show I’m able to be consistently there and I’m able to win another one.
“That’s why no matter what the result, win or lose, we’re always working hard, we’re always looking for things to improve in my game.”
Sabalenka’s rip-roaring form has helped her reach at least the semi-finals at the last six majors including at Wimbledon last year, having missed the 2022 event at the All England Club due to Russian and Belarusian players being banned.
Like last year, the trophy will not mention where Sabalenka comes from as she is competing without national affiliation under conditions imposed on Russian and Belarusian players in tennis since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

MONSTER GROUNDSTROKES

Sabalenka shrugged off the politics to roar through the tournament losing only 30 games along the way, with her biggest test coming against U.S. Open champion Coco Gauff in a rematch of their title clash at Flushing Meadows.
Playing in her third Grand Slam final, Sabalenka unleashed monster groundstrokes to grab the contest by the scruff of the neck with an early break for 2-0.
Thousands of Chinese supporters in the stadium and millions more back home cheered Zheng on as she went 40-0 up on Sabalenka’s serve only for the Belarusian to win five straight points and hold.
The charismatic 25-year-old Sabalenka has a massive Melbourne fan base of her own and she rode the vociferous Rod Laver Arena support to take the opening set, serving out at the second attempt after Zheng had saved four set points.
Zheng showed she was slowly growing in confidence by firing up her own big forehand amid the traditional rallying cry of “Jia You” – literally “add oil” – from her compatriots in the crowd.
All that did was fuel Sabalenka, however, and a clean crosscourt winner earned her a break point in the first game of the second set with Zheng’s double fault handing it to her on a platter.
The contest was then briefly halted with when a protester unfurled a Palestinian flag and shouted anti-war slogans before being taken out of the stadium by force.
Zheng, who was bidding to match the 2014 feat of her idol and compatriot Li Na in winning the Australian Open, saw her hopes fade after two more errors on serve left her 4-1 down.

Ageless wonder: Rohan Bopanna’s unforgettable Australian Open victory

With grit and grace, 43-year-old Rohan Bopanna defies expectations to rewrite tennis history

Rohan Bopanna of India holds his trophy after he and partner Matthew Ebden of Australia defeated Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori of Italy in the men’s doubles final at the Australian Open tennis championships at Melbourne Park

“I know a couple of years ago I sent a video message to my wife saying, ‘I am gonna call it a day’ “- this was the quote of a 43-year-old who just had reinvented himself among a full house of applause. Rohan Bopanna’s words echoed through the Rod Laver Arena where he stood firm carrying the weight of a journey filled with uncertainty, resilience and ultimately, triumph.

Four years ago, Bopanna stood on the edge of retirement, contemplating the end of his tennis career. His knees, battered by years of intense play, threatened to betray him, leaving him questioning his future in the sport. Yet, in the face of adversity, Bopanna refused to yield. With determination and a strict fitness regimen, he embarked on a journey to defy the odds and reclaim his place among the tennis elite.

The early years of Bopanna’s career were marked by promise and potential. A Davis Cup veteran, mixed doubles Grand Slam champion, and a former Doubles World No.3, he had tasted success on the biggest stages of the sport. But as time wore on, injuries began to take their toll, threatening to derail his dreams of further glory.

It was in the midst of these challenges that Bopanna found himself at a crossroads. Contemplating retirement, he faced a decision that would define the course of his future. Yet, even in the darkest of moments, a flicker of hope remained. Over the years, he doubled down on his efforts, committing himself wholeheartedly to a rigorous training regimen aimed at revitalising his body and reigniting his passion for the game.

As the months passed, Bopanna’s hard work began to pay off. His fitness improved, his injuries healed, and his game reached new heights. But perhaps most importantly, his belief in himself was restored. Armed with a newfound sense of confidence and determination, Bopanna set his sights on the ultimate prize – a Grand Slam title.

The road to victory was not easy. At the Australia Open, Bopanna and his partner, Matthew Ebden, faced formidable opponents at every turn, each match a grueling test of skill, endurance, and mental fortitude. Yet, with each passing victory, their confidence grew. They proved themselves time and again, overcoming the odds and silencing the doubters with their resolve.

And then, on a warm summer’s day in Melbourne, their moment arrived. In a thrilling final match against the Italian pair of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, Bopanna and Ebden delivered a masterclass in doubles tennis, their flawless teamwork and unyielding determination carrying them to victory. As the final point was won and the crowd erupted in applause, Bopanna’s emotions overflowed. Years of sacrifice, dedication, and unwavering belief had led to this moment of triumph.

As he stood on the podium, the weight of his accomplishment settled upon him. At 43 years, Rohan Bopanna had achieved what many thought impossible. He had rewritten the record books, proving once and for all that age is just a number. But more than that, he will continue to inspire a generation of athletes to never give up on their dreams.

In the wake of Bopanna’s Australian Open win, accolades poured in from around the world, including a heartfelt message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Time and again, the phenomenally talented @rohanbopanna shows age is no bar! Congratulations to him on his historic Australian Open win,” PM Modi wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Australian Open 2024: Daniil Medvedev Beats Alexander Zverev, Set To Face Jannik Sinner In Final

Daniil Medvedev battled into a third Australian Open final Friday with a come-from-behind five-set defeat of Alexander Zverev to set up a title match against Jannik Sinner.

Daniil Medvedev (left) beat Alexander Zverev in men’s singles semi-final at Australian Open 2024.

Daniil Medvedev battled into a third Australian Open final Friday with a come-from-behind five-set defeat of Alexander Zverev to set up a title match against Jannik Sinner. The never-say-die Russian third seed was in a precarious position on Rod Laver Arena but fought back to win 5-7, 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 after four hours 18 minutes. Ice-cool Italian Sinner will be awaiting him in Sunday’s title match after stunning defending champion Novak Djokovic in the other semi-final.

Medvedev has been to the final twice before, losing to Djokovic in 2021 and Rafael Nadal a year later.

It has been a long and arduous road to get back there, with the 27-year-old surviving two four-set battles and a pair of five-set matches before meeting Zverev.

But he proved once again to have the stamina, grinding down the sixth seed to keep alive his quest to collect a second Grand Slam title after winning the 2021 US Open.

He admitted he was “a little bit lost” in the opening two sets.

“But during the third set I just kept saying to myself that if I lose this match I just want to be proud of myself,” said the 27-year-old, who is into his sixth final at a major.

“I want to fight until the end, fight for every point. And I managed to win and I’m very proud.”

Both men opened with serves to love, but Medvedev then stuttered with two double faults, helping the German to his first break.

He collected another to race 4-1 clear with the Russian racking up too many unforced errors.

But Medvedev gradually began lifting his intensity and scored a double break to level at 5-5 as the match turned into a baseline slugfest.

A third break for Zverev allowed him the chance to serve for the set a second time and he came through a titanic tussle that included one epic rally of 51 shots and another of 40.

He drew first blood again in set two, converting a fourth break point in the fifth game.

The setback dented Medvedev’s resolve, with the German increasingly dictating the rallies, pushing him from corner to corner to consolidate and bank a two-set lead.

Medvedev stepped in slightly from his deep baseline position in the third set and it altered the dynamic, with a more aggressive net game pushing the set to a tiebreak that he won.

The fourth set went the way of the third, with nothing between the players until another tiebreak, when Zverev buckled on serve when two points away from the final.

An increasingly frustrated Zverev saved two break points in the fifth game of the deciding set before surrendering on a third with a netted forehand.

Aryna Sabalenka vs Qinwen Zheng, Australian Open women’s final: Prediction, H2H, tactics board – All you need to know

Aryna Sabalenka vs Qinwen Zheng, Australian Open women’s final: Prediction, H2H, tactics board – All you need to know

Aryna Sabalenka and Qinwen Zheng will be facing each other for the second time on WTA tour

Having Aryna Sabalenka, the defending champion, in the final wasn’t a surprise at all. Yes, she had one of the most comfortable draws in the opening week, but the world No. 2 fended off a promising 22-year-old Amanda Anisimova in the fourth round, former Roland Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova in the quarters and avenged her US Open final loss against Coco Gauff in the semifinal, without breaking a sweat. To top it off, she is yet to lose a set in the 2024 Australian Open. But you probably had her against world No. 1 Iga Swiatek or last year’s runner-up Elena Rybakina, the only player to have defeated Sabalenka this year, in the final. Yet, rising through the chaos in the top half of the women’s singles draw emerged No. 12 seed Qinwen Zheng, hoping to emulate the legendary Li Na’s decade-old feat and carry on the Chinese legacy. As the two gear up for the big clash on the iconic Rod Laver Arena on Friday evening, we take a look at their journey at Melbourne Park over the last fortnight, their past battles, and draw up the tactics board to predict the winner…

How did Sabalenka and Zheng reach the 2024 Australian Open final?
Sabalenka has been clinical over her last four weeks in Australia, having gone 10-1 since the start of this year. Six of those wins came at the Australian Open, where she spent less than seven hours on the court, having notched up straight-set wins in each of those matches. She beat qualifiers Ella Seidel and Brenda Fruhvirtova, 28th seed Lesia Tsurenko, Anisimova, No.9 Krejcikova and Gauff. Such has been Sabalenka’s dominance than, before her 7-6(2), 6-4 win against Gauff, no other opponent managed to win more than three games in a set.

If the 25-time tour-level titlist maintains the streak in the final, Sabalenka will become fifth player in history to win the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup without dropping a set, after Ash Barty in 2022, Serena Williams in 2017, Maria Sharapova in 2008 and Lindsay Davenport in 2000.

Zheng, who spent 11 hours and 34 minutes on court to make her first Grand Slam final, battled against a rare field of unseeded players in Ashlyn Krueger, Katie Boulter, Wang Yafan, Oceane Dodin, Anna Kalinskaya and Dayana Yastremska, despite being part of the top draw which was anchored by Swiatek, Rybakina and No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula. En route, she lost three sets.

What milestones are at stake for Sabalenka and Zheng in the 2024 Australian Open final?
Sabalenka on Saturday will be aiming to become the second player to successfully defend the Australian Open women’s title after Victoria Azarenka, who won in 2012 and 2013.

Zheng, on the other hand, will be hoping to win her third WTA title and first at a major. If she beats Sabalenka in the final, the 21-year-old will become the second Slam winner from China after Li Na, who won in 2014.

Have Sabalenka and Zheng faced each other previously on the WTA tour?
The two faced off each other only once before, at the US Open 2023 quarterfinal, where Sabalenka won 6-1, 6-4 against Zheng, en route to the final. Sabalenka did not face a single break point in that match.

“I’m sure the final will be really competitive, because I think Sabalenka, she’s one of the most big hitters right now in the tour,” Zheng said. “She’s got the most big serve, most big forehand, big backhand, she’s [a] really complete player.”

How dealing with the second serve will play a crucial role in Sabalenka vs Zheng Australian Open final?
While the two have been inseparable on first-serve points won numbers, Sabalenka has been top-notch behind her second serve at the Australian Open, winning 55 per cent of those points, significantly higher that Zheng’s 45 per cent. So the Chinese star needs to bring some genuine heat against Sabalenka’s second-serve and halt the Russian’s march with her heavy forehand.

India vs England, 1st Test: Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul Shine On Day 2 As Hosts Push England To Corner

Ravindra Jadeja’s two-layered fifty and KL Rahul’s mastery were at the heart of India’s 421 for seven, a total which placed them several miles ahead of England.

Ravindra Jadeja remained not out at the score of 81 on Day 2 of first Test vs England.

Ravindra Jadeja’s two-layered fifty and KL Rahul’s mastery were at the heart of India’s 421 for seven, a total which placed them several miles ahead of England after the second day’s play of the first Test in Hyderabad on Friday. Jadeja (81 batting) and Axar Patel (35 batting), who added 63 runs for the unbroken eighth-wicket stand, are at the crease at stumps. India’s lead has now swelled to 175 runs, and England would find it tough to wipe that out once their turn to bat come on third day.

But India’s ascendancy to the top on a slightly tacky pitch was more tectonic and Jadeja’s risk managing abilities played a huge role in it.

In one sense, the situation was ideal for the left-hander, who loves a scrap in the middle. When Jadeja came to bat, Rahul was in full flight and he joined the party with a few blows of his own.

In fact, the initial 40 balls he faced produced 35 runs as India first closed the gap with England and then swiftly moved into the lead.

But Rahul’s dismissal for a 123-ball 86 forced Jadeja to transform his approach. India’s lead was still only 42 then, and the home side needed him to bat long to construct more floors above that fledgling foundation.

Jadeja did precisely that. He slowed down indeed, but not to that extend of confining himself into a shell and opened up whenever England bowlers erred in their lengths.

A daring hoick off left-arm spinner Tom Hartley over long-on for a six and a flowing off-drive off leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed for a four showcased his power and touch.

England bowlers were all in spirit and optimism while bowling and appealing throughout the day, but they lacked consistency in hitting the right spot, except Joe Root, who is more than a part-timer in these conditions.

It came as no surprise then that it was Root who put Jadeja in the most unpleasant situation during his knock. The spinner wrapped Jadeja’s pads and umpire Paul Reiffel upheld the shout for leg-before.

But the DRS found a massive inside edge as Jadeja survived at 49. He duly completed his 20th Test fifty in 84 balls when he peeled three runs off Root.

The only sore point during his otherwise assured stay was a calamitous mix-up which resulted in the run out of R Ashwin, as Jadeja sold a dummy, jogging a few steps before turning his back only to find his spin bowling partner standing right next to him.

Though KS Bharat (41, 81 balls) failed to kick on, the wicketkeeper batter helped Jadeja make 68 runs off 141 balls for the sixth wicket, which expanded India’s lead.

But regret will linger inside Bharat, who recently made a hundred against England Lions for India A, for he could not make his maiden Test fifty when the team was in a strong position and there was no real pressure on him.

However, Bharat will not be the only India batter who will be nursing that feeling once they glance back at the day’s proceedings at the RGI Stadium.

Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill all could have registered a more substantial score against their names here.

Rahul will be particularly disappointed as he was primed to score a hundred in his 50th Test. Nonetheless, his innings was marked by imperious timing and meticulous shot selection, which made it oh-so-pleasing to watch.

His fifth-wicket alliance with Jadeja produced 65 runs in just 74 balls during the middle session of play, pinning England on the back-foot. Overall, India made 87 runs during that period, losing two wickets.

The effortless partnership ended when Rahul pulled a half-tracker by Hartely to pick Ahmed, the lone fielder in the deep at mid-wicket.

Iyer (35) scratched around for a good part of his 63-ball stay and seemed to have weathered the storm, especially against pacer Mark Wood who tested him with a slew of short-pitched deliveries.

But Iyer let the opportunity to build on it slip away when he played a slog sweep of Ahmed to give a simple catch to Hartley at deep mid-wicket and the Mumbaikar will need efforts with more substance to fight for his place once Virat Kohli rejoins the squad from the third Test.

In the first session, Yashasvi Jaiswal could only add four runs to his overnight score of 76 before offering a lame return catch to Root, and had he shown a bit of patience to settle down the left-hander could have notched his second Test century.

Shubman Gill, the other overnight batter, reached 23 but a rather reckless slog sweep off Hartley ended in the hands of Ahmed at deep mid-wicket.

Zheng aiming for Djokovic ‘chill’ in semi-final

Zheng Qinwen reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open for the first time with her win over Anna Kalinskaya on Wednesday, and now the Chinese 12th seed wants to learn to be as chilled as men’s world number one Novak Djokovic.
Zheng defeated Russia’s Kalinskaya 6-7(4) 6-3 6-1 in the quarter-final and afterwards spoke of her brief chat with Djokovic the previous day when they crossed paths after her practice session, as the Serb was about to take on Taylor Fritz in his quarter-final.

“Well, that talk was really fast, honestly, I talk with him before his match,” Zheng said.
“You know, he came to say hi to me, so chill. Looks like he doesn’t have a match. Because me, before a match, I’m really focused and I don’t want to talk with anyone.
“I really want to learn that chill from the top players, because I think that is what I’m missing.”
The 21-year-old was far from chilled as she lost the opening set against Kalinskaya, despite breaking the Russian’s serve twice early on.
“I think at the beginning of the first set I’m just thinking too much,” Zheng said.
“That’s why I lost the first set, because I got those early breaks, then later on I’m not able to keep my serve.
“Of course, that’s one of my problems. So when I lost the first set I tried to tell myself to stay focused, don’t think too much.”
Zheng had no problem holding her serve in the next two sets, and she hit 10 aces over the match compared with Kalinskaya’s two.

IND vs ENG, 1st Test: Bazball’s Trial by Spin Begins in Hyderabad

England’s Bazball will face its toughest challenge in India (AFP and AP Image)

The build-up to the India vs England 5-match series has not been as spicy as one would generally envisage. Partly because the result for many is a forgone conclusion – India with a remarkable run of 16 straight series wins dating back to over a decade ago have been unbeatable at home. More so after the introduction of the World Test Championship Cycle, after which India have not only won matches but have ransacked teams.

Since 2013, India have played 46 Tests, losing only three while eight have been a draw. It is a scary statistic. Forget about the change in personnel over the years, India have got the job done each time.

England, the last victors on Indian soil have bore the brunt of this unstoppable force twice since their memorable 2012 win – in 2016 and 2021. But England can take little heart from the fact that of the three losses India had endured, one of them was inflicted by England – that too in a series opener in Chennai. Four from that XI will feature in the first Test in Hyderabad starting tomorrow. Another thing that England can clutch on to is the very fact they were the last team to beat India in India.

But things have changed a lot from 2012. The England red-ball cricket has flipped over the tangent, while India have managed to find the deadliest mix for their opponents at home.

Ever since Brendon McCullum took over the reins of the England setup in May 2022 – England have not lost a series. Just before that, they had gone on to lose five out of the six series they had played. The McCullim-Ben Stokes Combo has given Test Cricket ‘Bazball’; while the Ravi Shastri-Kohli combo gave Test cricket ‘Trial by Spin’

It’s like the irresistible force paradox – What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? With ‘Bazball’ England can go berserk and rock India, or they could go burst completely with the Indian spinners administering a slow painful death.

It’s like the irresistible force paradox – What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? With ‘Bazball’ England can go berserk and rock India, or they could go burst completely with the Indian spinners administering a slow painful death.

But, as the Border Gavaskar Trophy would tell you, India too are susceptible to spin and despite the team filling up the W column, their batters’ prowess too have dwindled against the travelling spinners. If it was not for Axar Patel’s runs lower down, things would have panned out rather differently for India as well. Indian batters tend to struggle against unknown commodities and in rookie Tom Hartley and legspinner Rehan Ahmed, England have in their ranks two players Indian batters have not seen much off.

And that sets up this series nicely. England skipper Ben Stokes said during the pre-match press conference that even though India is a beast at home, they are not going to back down and think defensively, while Rohit Sharma despite erring the way of caution said this Indian team is not unbeatable, reminded himself that if his team does not show up, they could find themselves in trouble.

What: India vs England, 1st Test

When: 25th January – 29th January

Where: Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad

India Team News

Virat Kohli’s absence for the first two Test makes the Indian middle-order slightly brittle and even though India have unofficially added MP’s Rajat Patidar as cover, it will most likely be Shreyas Iyer bumped up to No.4 with KL Rahul at No.5 and Srikar Bharat as the specialist wicketkeeper.

Without Kohli, this series or at least the first two Tests could prove pivotal for Rahul as he will be the fulcrum around which the Indian middle-order will bat around. Shubman Gill, after a stellar start to his Test career has tapered off, in all formats too and batting at No.3 – a position once held by the Wall Rahul Dravid and then the immovable Cheteshwar Pujara, the weight of expectations will be heavy on the young shoulders of the anointed crown prince.

‘Crying foul is an old English way’: Venkatesh Prasad schools England over Shoaib Bashir visa fiasco

(TOI Photo)

NEW DELHI: Former India medium pace bowler Venkatesh Prasad schooled the England and Wales Cricket Board after English media and the ECB played a blame game regarding the visa refusal of the rookie off-spinner Shoaib Bashir.
The 20-year-old Bashir, who plays for Somerset in the English county, was forced to head back to England from the team’s Abu Dhabi training base after a prolonged wait for a visa.

“His visa needed to be stamped in the UK. The ECB sent Shoaib Bashir to the UAE, thinking it would be stamped in a third country. Not following basic procedures, assuming things and then crying foul is an old English way. If anyone, it is the ECB at fault,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Later in the day, Bashir was granted a visa to play in the five-match Test series against India, bringing an end to the “frustrating” wait for the visiting team. The delay in the process left captain

Indian cricket team batter Shubman Gill had a memorable 2023 with brilliant performances across formats and he won the Cricketer of the Year award at the BCCI Awards 2024. Gill celebrated the achievement by posting a picture of himself in the award ceremony eight years ago with Virat Kohli. “So much nostalgia, from coming here when i was 14 and meeting my idols and legends for the first time. Watching Virat bhai win cricketer of the year was something I would never forget. Pure motivation for me to go a step further and give everything for my country this year,” he wrote on Instagram.

Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah and Shubman Gill won the Polly Umrigar Award which is awarded to the Best International Cricketer in the Men’s Category for the years 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 respectively on Tuesday during the Naman Awards.

Shami reigned supreme during the year 2019-20 as he scalped 77 wickets in 30 matches with an average of 19.81 and an economy of 4.06. His best bowling figures during the year 5/35 came against South Africa in Visakhapatnam.

After winning the award, Shami expressed his delight and said, “I have been injured for the most part when I played for my country, I enjoy playing with the team and whenever the team requires me in whatever condition I am ready to play.”

Ashwin went on to dominate the following year as he made just seven appearances but scalped 44 wickets with his best bowling figure of 6/61 coming against England in Chennai.

The experienced all-rounder is close to completing 500 Test wickets as he currently sits on 490. He could achieve the milestone against England but isn’t focusing on the number.

Rohan Bopanna becomes oldest first-time World No. 1 with maiden semifinal run in Australian Open men’s doubles

With the win on Court 3, Bopanna, playing his 17th consecutive tournament at Melbourne Park, made the semifinals at the Australian Open for the first time ever.

Rohan Bopanna claims history with maiden Australian Open semifinal qualification

India’s grand old man of tennis, Rohan Bopanna, on Wednesday, added another feather to his already-crammed hat as the 43-year-old has been assured of becoming the oldest first-time World No. 1 in ATP men’s doubles ranking following his stellar 6-4, 7-6 (5) win in the men’s doubles quarterfinals of 2024 Australian Open alongside Australia’s Matthew Ebden against Argentinian duo of Máximo González and Andrés Molteni. The Indian tennis ace claimed the brand-new record by surpassing Rajeev Ram of the USA, who had climbed atop in October 2022, at the age of 38, for the first time in his career, swapping places with partner Joe Salisbury of Great Britain.

Following a brief delay at the end of the third game, as bubbles were spotted on the court due to overnight rain in Melbourne, the Indo-Aussie pair closed out the opening set in just over half an hour. After breaking Gonzalez’s serve in the fifth game, Bopanna comfortably served out the first set, winning it 6-4.

Both the Argentine’s serves were tested early on the second set, but they held their nerves against the No. 2 seed as the proceedings headed to a tie-break. Bopanna and Ebden never lost a tie-break (4-0) in three matches so far in Melbourne, and the streak remained intact. The duo stuttered initially against the No. 3 seed, which included a double fault from Ebden. However, the Aussie reprieved himself with an ace and then a forehand winner, bouncing back from 1-3 down to 4-4 before two stunning returns from Bopanna saw the pair claim victory.

With the win on Court 3, Bopanna, playing his 17th consecutive tournament at Melbourne Park, having made his debut in 2008, reached the semifinals at the Australian Open for the first time in his career. His previous best was a third-round finish which he achieved six times in his career, the last in 2018 before incurring an array of five-straight opening-round exits. And it subsequently assures him the No. 1 crown when the fresh ranking list will be announced on Monday, the day after the final.

It comes almost four months after the Indian star became the oldest-ever man to make a Grand Slam final in the Open Era, when he and Ebden lost the US Open final in September. And it’s more than 20 years since he turned pro.

BCCI’s Strong Message As Virat Kohli Withdraws From First Two England Tests

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Monday that star batter Virat Kohli has opted out of the first two Test matches against England citing ‘personal reasons’.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Monday that star batter Virat Kohli has opted out of the first two Test matches against England citing ‘personal reasons’. In an official statement, BCCI said that Kohli had conversations with skipper Rohit Sharma and the team management regarding his absence and extended their support to the cricketer. “Virat Kohli has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to be withdrawn from the first two Tests of the upcoming Test series against England, citing personal reasons,” BCCI said in their official statement.

“Virat has spoken to Captain Rohit Sharma, the team management and the selectors and has emphasized that while representing the country has always been his top priority, certain personal situations demand his presence and undivided attention,” the statement further read.

Kohli missed the first T20I match against Afghanistan due to ‘personal reasons’ and earlier, he also missed an intra-squad match in South Africa as he had to fly to London.

The BCCI statement also asked the media to refrain from ‘speculating on the nature of his personal reasons’ and said that Kohli’s replacement will be announced in the coming days.

“You Can’t Bat Again”: AB de Villiers On Rohit Sharma-Super Over Controversy vs Afghanistan

The third T20I between India and Afghanistan became an interesting watch as the result of the match was determined after two super-overs.

India registered a 3-0 clean sweep over Afghanistan in the recently-concluded T20I series last week. The series marked the return of India skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli back in the T20Is after a gap of 14 months. The third T20I became an interesting watch as the result of the match was determined after two super-overs. After a long, thrilling battle, Team India clinched the victory by 10 runs and won the series with 3-0 scoreline. However, this match also grabbed some controversy after Rohit returned to bat in the second super over.

In the first super over, India needed 17 to win off 6 balls. Rohit scored 14 runs before walking back to the dugout. It looked like that he got retired out and as per the guidelines, a player cannot bat in the second super over, if he/she has been declared out in the first super over.

However, Rohit returned to bat for India in the second over, leaving everyone curious that whether he was retired hurt or retired out.

Speaking about the incident, South Africa legendary batter AB de Villiers stated that a player cannot bat again if he gets out in the first super over. He also stated that it might have been the fault of the broadcasters.

“Double Super Over unbelievable (smiles). You can’t bat again if you are declared out in the first super over. I think maybe they will claim that he was retired hurt due to an injury and maybe it was a scoring mistake to show him out,” De Villiers said on his YouTube channel.

De Villiers also lavished praises on India batter Rinku Singh and stated that he is a match-winner and his consistency is needed to win the games.

India Open: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty Enters Final With Convincing Victory

Former champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were a step away from their first title of the season, progressing to a second successive final with a victory over Tokyo Olympics bronze medallists Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia at the India Open Super 750 on Saturday. World No. 2 Indians, who had finished runner-up at Malaysia Open Super 1000 last week, showed nerves of steel as they kept a sustained pressure on Aaron and Soh, the 2022 World champions, to eke out a 21-18 21-14 in a thrilling semifinal clash. Satwik broke into a dance as Chirag jumped into his arms as the duo celebrated after they won 11 of the last 12 points in the second game to emerge victories. It was only their third win against the Malaysian combination.

The win ensured the home challenge was alive in the Super 750 tournament after HS Prannoy was completely outplayed by world no. 2 Shi Yu Qi of China 21-15 21-5 win in what turned out to be a lop-sided contest at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall here.

Satwik and Chirag, who had won the 2022 edition, will face third seeded Koreans Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae in the summit clash.

The match was halted at 13-13 in the second game after Chirag’s return hit Aaron’s eyes during a fierce rally but he seemed okay as play was resumed after some time though the Indians pair completely dominated the proceedings there after.

Earlier, Prannoy, the World No. 9 Indian, matched his rival in the initial phase but after 14-14 in the opening game, he faded into oblivion as Shi Yu Qi registered a 21-15 21-5 win in what turned out to be a lop-sided contest at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall here.

Shi Yu Qi moved with ease across the court and played with patience and precision to outwit Prannoy, who looked sloppy in the second game.

In the opening game, Prannoy opened up a 6-3 lead with two steep returns and after winning a net duel. A backhand going to net and another net error from the Indian brought Shi Yu Qi back at 6-6.

The Chinese played a couple of nice-looking around the head smashes to move to 10-8. Prannoy again clawed back before Shi Yu Qi entered the break with a one-point advantage with another precise smash.

The two engaged in a fierce battle as lead changed hands too frequently, moving together till 14-14.

But the Indian seemed to have lost his focus there after as sprayed his service into the net and then Shi Yuqi produced a net kill and a smash to move to 17-14.

Another smash on his opponent forehand and it was five-game points for the Chinese, who converted it by sending another one away from Prannoy.

After the change of sides, Prannoy just didn’t look in his element as Shi Yu Qi looked by far the better player as his net play was polished and he played some superb drops to open up a 6-3 lead.

The Chinese looked in control as he dictated the rallies and often finished the points unleashing his precise smashes on the flanks.

Prannoy failed to curb his errors as his blocks went to net and lifts long. Soon Shi Yu Qi held a handsome 11-4 advantage at the break.

The Chinese looked patient as he took pace off the rallies using his drops and half smashes, reverse hits and drew errors from his opponent.

Prannoy body language said it all as he couldn’t put any pressure on his fancied opponent. In a jiffy it was 17-5 in the Chinese favour. He took 15 match points and sealed it when the Indian went long again.

“I think the first game was quite posed but I gave 2-3 points in the end. I was not able to move well in the second game. All credit to him, he has some good shots. Happy that could reach semifinals but still a lot work need to be done to go on and win tournaments,” he said.

“It’s better not to analyse too much now. It is a learning lesson. Hope I can do better next time.” In the finals, Shi Yu Qi will face Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu, who stunned World Championships silver medallist Kodai Naraoka of Japan 21-13 15-21 21-19 to qualify for his first Super 750 men’s singles final at the India Open.

The World No. 18 Lee had reached the finals at Hylo Open super 300 and Thailand Open super 500 last year.

Saudi Arabia’s soccer dream suffers a setback with high-profile departure

England international Jordan Henderson abruptly ended his playing time in Saudi Arabia’s Pro League, dealing a blow to the kingdom’s ambitious plans to make its domestic league an international soccer hub.

Former Liverpool captain Henderson on Thursday signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with Dutch side Ajax shortly after the 33-year-old agreed to mutually terminate his contract with Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ettifaq.

Henderson’s U-turn on playing in the Saudi Pro League comes six months after his controversial decision to sign with the club. He had reportedly been unhappy after failing to settle in the country.

Henderson’s hasty exit from Saudi Arabia marks the end of “a miserable episode in a previously exemplary career,” according to BBC Sport’s chief soccer writer, and raises questions about both the midfielder’s reputation as well as the image of the Saudi Pro League.

“I’m sad to say that I will be leaving Al Ettifaq with immediate effect,” Henderson said Thursday via social media. “It wasn’t an easy decision but one that I feel is best for me and my family.”

He added: “I want to take this opportunity to thank the club & the fans for all the support during my time. I really felt the love from Day One. I’ll keep watching & hoping for your success. Good luck for the future.”

In an interview released by Ajax shortly afterward, Henderson described a “crazy” last few days as a “whirlwind” but that he was now excited to begin a “new chapter” in his career and life.

Henderson had been one of many high-profile players to have moved to Saudi Arabia last summer, with former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and ex-Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante also making the switch.

Saudi Arabia has spent an extraordinary amount on recruiting soccer stars to bolster domestic competition in recent years, as well as making massive investments in sports such as Formula One, golf, tennis and boxing.

Critics have repeatedly accused Riyadh of “sportswashing,” or using sports to distract from human rights abuses in the country. Saudi officials have consistently denied these claims.

Henderson’s early departure from Saudi Arabia prompted many to speculate about the potential reputational damage to the country’s top domestic league.

“His exit has also hurt the image of the Saudi Pro League to the outside world, something it can ill-afford so early in its development and with the country determined to use it as the launchpad for its bid to stage the 2034 World Cup,” said Phil McNulty, chief soccer writer at BBC Sport.

In a statement issued on Henderson’s exit, Saad Allazeez, the vice-chairman and interim chief executive of the Saudi Pro League, said: “This is all just part of football, all across the world and life, across all careers. Sometimes despite best efforts people don’t always adjust or settle and that can impact performances and lead to frustrations for all.”

“Jordan is a good guy and it’s a shame that things didn’t work out for him, but he’d be the first to admit that full support was given to him and respect shown. So everyone tried and no one is to blame,” Allazeez continued, according to The Associated Press.

Teenage darts sensation Luke Littler, 16, wins Bahrain Darts Masters to claim first senior title

On his route to the final, Littler hit a sensational nine-darter against Nathan Aspinall – becoming the youngest player ever to do so in a televised tournament.

Luke Littler celebrates after defeating Michael van Gerwen in the final of the Bahrain Darts Masters

Teenage darts sensation Luke Littler has won the Bahrain Darts Masters final to claim his first Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) senior title.

The 16-year-old, from Warrington, Cheshire, beat three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen 8-5 in the final in Sakhir.

He also became the youngest player at a televised tournament to hit a nine-darter in the opening leg of his quarter-final victory over Nathan Aspinall.

Littler, who turns 17 on Sunday, said the tournament was the first time he had thrown a dart since his life-changing run at the World Darts Championship.

He shot into the spotlight this month by becoming the youngest player ever to reach the final of the World Darts Championship.

He lost that match to new world number one, Luke Humphries, but made clear his ability to compete at the highest level during his sensational run at Alexandra Palace, north London.

It also earned him a spot in the Premier League Darts, which is due to start next month.

Littler, nicknamed “The Nuke”, later congratulated 28-year-old Humphries on his win, saying he “deserved it” and was the “better man on the night”.

Tata Group Retains IPL Title Sponsorship For Next Five Years: Sources

The Tata Group has retained the title sponsorship rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the next five years, sources confirmed to NDTV. The new deal will see Tata continue as the title sponsor of the marquee T20 event until 2028. Tata cracked the deal after matching the figure presented by Aditya Birla by using its Right to Match (RTM) card. One of India’s largest business conglomerates, the Tata Group had earlier replaced Chinese mobile manufacturer Vivo as the IPL title sponsor. It was a two-year deal from 2022 to 2023.

Vivo had a deal of Rs 2200 crore for title sponsorship rights of IPL from 2018-2022 but after the 2020 Galwan Valley military face-off between the Indian and Chinese Army soldiers, the brand took a break for a year with Dream11 replacing it in the IPL.

Indian Women Hockey Team’s Olympic Dream Shattered After Loss To Japan In Qualifiers

Paris will remain out of bounds for Indian women’s hockey team that eschewed its crisp, short-passing game to bow of 2024 Olympic qualification race.

Paris will remain out of bounds for Indian women’s hockey team that eschewed its crisp, short-passing game to bow of 2024 Olympic qualification race with a 0-1 loss to Japan in the third-place match of FIH Qualifiers in Ranchi on Friday. Kana Urata’s sixth minute strike from the penalty corner turned out to be the winner for Japan as the wheels that were set in motion for the Indian women’s team, following a momentous fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, seemed to have come off after the utterly disappointing show in one of its hubs in recent years.

The top three sides from this tournament qualified for the Paris Olympics. By finishing third, Japan, booked their berth.

Germany and USA, who will play in the final later in the evening, are the other two sides to have sealed their places.

Japan were the early aggressor as they exerted pressure on the Indian defence and, in the process, had the first scoring chance, but an alert Indian skipper Savita in front of the goal came out rushing to kick away the loose ball in the second minute.

The Indians played catch-up as they failed to threaten the Japanese goal despite making some fine circle penetrations.

Japan kept up the pressure and secured their first penalty corner minutes later but the Indians defended well.

Two minutes later, India conceded another soft penalty corner and this time Urata found the back of the net through the legs of Savita with a grounded flick.

The Indian backline was put under tremendous pressure by the Japanese with some defence-splitting dangerous crosses but the hosts somehow managed to hold on.

In the 12th minute, India had their first real chance. Monika created the opportunity with a fine cross from the right flank but Lalremsiami’s deflection went over the bar.

As has been the case in this tournament, the Indians were guilty of not using both the flanks. It was predictable hockey from the Savita-led side as they tried to build most of their attacks from the right flank.

The Indians allowed Japan to control the proceedings as they strayed away from their strength, that is playing attacking hockey.

Japan continued from where they left in the first quarter and secured their third set piece just after the restart.

The Indians, however, got some momentum in the second quarter, securing two penalty corners in quick succession.

First, Lalremsiami created the opportunity with a fine 3D skills, but Deepika’s effort was saved by Japan goalkeeper Eika Nakamura.

Seconds later, India earned another set piece but once again Deepika failed to breach the Japanese defence.

The Indian players didn’t show any intent to win 50-50 balls. They also seemed to have run out of ideas, and mostly tried to hit the ball from the 30 yard circle instead of opting for crisp, short passes, which is their strength.

Trailing 0-1, the Indians came out attacking after the change of ends and made a few good moves, but goals eluded them.

Six minute into the third quarter, India secured another penalty corner but Deepika failed to get past Nakamura in front of Japan goal.

Minutes later, Japan managed to get a set piece but the Indians defended well to stay in the hunt.

India Lose Against Germany In Tense Shoot-Out, To Face Japan For Paris Berth

The Indian women’s hockey team fought with tigerish resolve but lost its nerves in the most crucial phase of the penalty shootout, going down to Germany.

The Indian women’s hockey team fought with tigerish resolve but lost its nerves in the most crucial phase of the penalty shootout, going down to Germany 3-4 in the second semifinal of the FIH Olympic Qualifier in Ranchi on Thursday. The match was stretched to a penalty shootout after the teams were tied at 2-2 in the regulation time. With this win Germany secured a berth in the Paris Olympics later this year. However, India will also have a crumb of consolation as the hosts have another chance to seal their Olympics berth if they beat Japan in the third-fourth place match on Friday.

The top three sides from this tournament will qualify for the Paris Games. World no.5 Germany will take on the USA in the final of this event on Friday.

Deepika (15th minute) and Ishika Chaudhary (59th) were the goal-scorers for India in the regular time, while Germany’s both goals were scored by Charlotte Stapenhorst (27th, 57th).

As expected, the Germans came out attacking from the onset and exerted continuous pressure on the Indian defence on a foggy night, where visibility was a problem. The Germans were right on their money with their strategy and made numerous circle entries.

They earned a penalty corner in the opening minute but it was disallowed after India went for a review. But the visitors kept up the pressure and fetched another penalty corner in the ninth minute but India captain and goalkeeper Savita Punia was up to the task.

The Indians too made a few circle penetrations but lacked in finishing.

But egged on by MS Dhoni, the former India cricket team captain who came to watch the game, the home side fought back valiantly to trouble the German defence with their speed.

Just 55 seconds from the end of the first quarter, India secured their first penalty corner and Deepika slammed home with a powerful drag-flick to stun the Germans.

The Indians grew in confidence after the goal and attacked the rival defence continuously, which witnessed a few goal-mouth scrambles but goals eluded them.

The relentless Germans were in no mood to sit back and attacked in numbers after being 0-1 down.

Lack of coordination from the Indian midfield and inability to clear loose balls cost the hosts dearly as Germany equalised three minutes from half-time when Stapenhorst scored from a field effort.

The Germans continued their relentless efforts after the change of ends. But the Indian defence stood tall to deny their opponents.

Three minutes from the third quarter, Savita came into the action and pulled off a fine body save to deny Anne Schroder.

The Germans used their strong frame and powerplay to dominate the Indians.

In the 35th minute, India got a great chance to take the lead from a counter-attack but Deepika’s push from close range was easily padded away by German goalkeeper Julia Sonntag.

Seconds later, Germany bagged their second penalty corner but the Indian backline was rock solid, which weathered several German raids.

Yuvraj Singh oozes class in golden reaction to 400-man Prakhar Chaturvedi breaking his record

Yuvraj Singh’s golden reaction speaks volumes about his class.

Yuvraj Singh was all praise for young Prakhar Chaturvedi(PTI-BCCI)

Prakhar Chaturvedi has become the talk of the town. The Karnataka batter, all of 17 years of age, has etched his name in the record books following a marathon innings of 404 in the final of the Cooch Behar tournament against Mumbai. Prakhar’s knock is the first quadruple century in the history of the tournament final, and overall, the second-highest individual score in the history of the tournament behind Vijay Zol’s 451 during the 2011-12 season.

But the one number that has become synonymous with Prakhar despite not belonging to him is 358 – the record which was previously held by Yuvraj Singh – before being surpassed by the youngster. Yuvraj’s 358 against Bihar in the 1999 final – a knock that was very-well documented in MS Dhoni’s biopic – stood tall for 24 years before it was toppled by Prakhar on Monday.

Reacting to the development, Yuvraj was all class in his appreciation post for young Chaturvedi and sounded thrilled knowing that Indian cricket is in good hands. “Very happy to see this! Records are meant to be broken and I’m glad to see the future of Indian cricket in safe hands,” he posted on X.

Prakhar’s 404 paved the way for Karnataka’s win. After Mumbai put on 380, riding on Prakhar’s magnum opus of a knock, Karnataka replied with a gobsmacking 890/8, and in the process, playing out 223 overs to win the match on a first-innings lead. Years ago, led by Yuvraj, had achieved the same feat after piling 839 in response to Bihar’s 357, where Dhoni had hit 84 off 151 deliveries. Yuvraj had blasted 40 fours and six sixes.

Prakhar’s marathon knock
Almost a quarter of a century later, at the KSCA Navule Stadium, Prakhar himself clobbered 46 fours and three sixes en route to creating history and even though his teammate Harshil Dharmani, a top-order batter contributed with a stunning 169, everything was reduced to an afterthought and paled in comparison to Prakhar’s unbeaten quadruple ton. The youngster’s effort was also lauded by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who said the innings has set a new benchmark.

‘If I didn’t have Virat Kohli supporting me, I don’t know what I would have done’ – Sumit Nagal

Sumit Nagal became the first player from the nation to defeat a seeded player in the Australian Open since 1989.

Indian Tennis player Sumit Nagal etched his name in history books on Tuesday, January 16 as he became the first player from the nation to defeat a seeded player in the Australian Open since 1989. The 26-year-old registered the historic feat by beating Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan in the opening round, winning the game by 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 as he further advanced to the second round.

Notably, Nagal has a special connection with the star India cricketer Virat Kohli who has been supported him since 2017. Following Nagal’s historic achievement, an old interview of him has resurfaced where he thanked the former India captain for supporting him when he was undergoing a financial crisis.

“Virat Kohli’s foundation has been supporting me since 2017. I haven’t been performing well for the last two years and was facing a financial crisis. If I didn’t have Virat Kohli supporting me, I don’t know what I would have done,” Nagal told Bombay Times.

Women’s hockey Olympic qualifiers: India stay on road to Paris with convincing win over Italy

The ball was still mid-flight when Salima Tete took off.

The forward, who has taken it upon herself to ensure India do not miss the Olympic bus, received a pass inside the ‘D’ on the right with seconds remaining in the third quarter. She looked up to see where the goalkeeper was and, from an acute angle, unleashed a ferocious hit.

As the ball flew into the far corner, Salima dashed towards the other side, in the direction of Udita Duhan. In the centre of the pitch, the two players who have turned around India’s faltering campaign embraced each other. Soon, they were swarmed by the rest of the teammates.

Salima’s goal came at a time when Italy still had some fight left in them. Unfazed by the two-goal deficit, the Europeans continued to dart forward, test the Indian defence and win penalty corners. But Salima’s strike – India’s third goal of the evening – snuffed out any hopes of an Italian comeback.

India added two more goals in the final quarter to record a comfortable 5-1 win and qualify for the semifinals of the Olympic Qualifiers, ensuring they firmly remain in contention for a Paris Games berth.

But it wasn’t before they got a helping hand from the same team that gave them sleepless nights – the USA.

The Americans, who defeated India on the opening night leaving the hosts in a spot of bother, maintained their 100 percent record with a 1-0 win over New Zealand. That meant the US surpassed all expectations and topped Pool B. Crucially, from India’s perspective, it simplified their task: to stay in the hunt for the Olympic berth, they simply needed to avoid defeat against the lowest-ranked team of the tournament, Italy.

And they did. When it was needed the most, India came up with a near-flawless performance to beat the world number 20 side. When the final hooter sounded, it sparked scenes of jubilation at a packed Jaipal Singh Stadium in Ranchi; relieved, too, that the hosts had recovered from a wobbly start.

Ranchi: Indian players acknowledge fans after winning FIH Women’s Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024 hockey match against Italy at Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astro Turf Hockey Stadium, in Ranchi, Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024. (PTI Photo/Swapan Mahapatra)

But it’s also a job half done. The win ensured India made it to the second part of the tournament where the stakes will rise. India, ranked 6th, play fifth-placed Germany in a tough semifinal on Thursday.

A win will seal a third-straight Olympic berth for a team that hadn’t made it to the Games for more than three decades until they embarked on this fine run. A defeat, however, would mean another nervy playoff battle.

That’s a worry for another day, though. On Tuesday, India coach Janneke Schopman flashed a big, wide smile for the first time in this tournament. The Dutchwoman couldn’t bear to watch the preceding game between the USA and New Zealand on which India’s fate was partially dependent.

The US had taken an early lead but New Zealand mounted relentless pressure, throwing everything they had at them. As was the case against India, though, basic errors cost New Zealand dear as the US hung on for a win, which meant India only needed to get a point against Italy to finish second and qualify for the last four.

The shortest MS Dhoni advice that turned Shivam Dube’s career on its head: Ex-India opener reveals

Former India opener Abhinav Mukund said MS Dhoni must have spoken to Shivam Dube about his problems against the short-pitched deliveries.

MS Dhoni has a chat with Shivam Dube

That Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and its captain MS Dhoni have been instrumental in Shivam Dube’s return to international cricket is an open secret. The lanky all-rounder has repeatedly talked about Dhoni’s influence on his game ever since he started playing for CSK in IPL 2022. Dube said Dhoni always backed him to play his natural game. “This credit goes to Chennai Super Kings and Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) because I always had this game in me. They have brought out the best in me. They have always encouraged me and said that they believe in me. Stephen Fleming and Mike Hussey have shown faith in me,” Dube said after smashing successive half-centuries in the T20I series against Afghanistan.

Apart from the mindset and a promotion in the batting-order of CSK, did Dhoni suggest any technical changes in Dube’s batting? He sure did, at least according to former India cricketer Abhinav Mukund. The former India opener said Dhoni must have had a word with Dube about his struggles against the short-pitched deliveries.

“A little birdie told me that Dube had a chat with MS Dhoni and he told him – not rocket science – don’t attack the short ball,” Mukund told Jio Cinema.

Dube’s struggles against short balls and the Dhoni touch
Despite being one of the tallest cricketers going around in Indian cricket, Dube has had his issues with the short deliveries. The same tactic was applied by Afghanistan when he came in to bat in the first T20I in Mohali but this time around, Dube was prepared to fight it out. He looked a bit uncomfortable but just as Dhoni suggested, didn’t throw his wicket away.

The result was an unbeaten 60 off 40 balls to see India home in Mohali. He backed that up with another unbeaten knock of 63 off 32 balls in the second T20I here on Sunday, making a fairly good spin attack look pedestrian with his power-hitting.

“It’s a pleasure to keep improving my performance as I am going along. The range I have is god’s gift and I have also worked a lot on it. I have developed many areas of my game and I am getting the runs on the board,” Dube told JioCinema.

On the amount of work that has gone into improving his game against short balls, Dube said, “I have worked a lot on it. When I was playing domestic cricket, I was able to dominate all the bowlers, but when it came to IPL and Indian cricket it was not easy as bowlers were bowling over 140km/hr. I worked a lot with side arms, but it is more about the mindset which I worked.”

Rohit Sharma Creates History, Becomes First Indian Captain To…

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma created history on Sunday (January 14) during the second T20I of the ongoing three-match series between India and Afghanistan. The 36-year-old became the first Indian captain to win 12 bilateral T20I series and also equaled MS Dhoni’s record of winning 41 T20Is for India as captain in the shortest format of the game.

India beat Afghanistan by six wickets in the second T20I of the ongoing three-match series on Sunday (January 14). In the match played at Holkar Stadium in Indore, the hosts chased down the target of 173 runs in 15.4 overs for the loss of four wickets. For India, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 68 runs from 34 balls, and all-rounder Shivam Dube remained not out on 63 runs from 32 balls. With a second straight six-wicket win, the Men in Blue sealed the T20I series.

The second T20I in Indore was a special one for Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. The 36-year-old batter became the first cricketer in history to play 150 T20Is. However, he was unable to open his account in the second T20I as well and got out for a golden duck. But despite a forgetful show with the bat for the second match in a row, Rohit created a new record on Sunday. He became the first Indian skipper to win 12 bilateral T20I series and also equaled legendary MS Dhoni’s record of winning 41 T20Is as India captain.

Pavel Kotov leaves ball girl shaken with ugly Australian Open blowup

Pavel Kotov defeated Arthur Rinderknech to begin his Australian Open run on Sunday, but will perhaps be more known for his questionable activity during the match, and not exactly what led to the final score.

Kotov was upset at his play at one point in the contest, which he eventually won in five sets.

Kotov took his frustration out on a tennis ball, smashing it toward the wall behind him where a ball girl was visibly shaken and seemingly went to take cover.

Though the ball didn’t land close to her, the ferocity of the hit was enough to cause her to turn away.

Kotov didn’t appear to notice the result of his outburst.

The blowup was posted by Wide World of Sports in Australia on their Instagram page.

India vs Afghanistan Highlights, 2nd T20: Shivam Dube and Yashasvi Jaiswal help IND win by 6 wickets in Indore and clinch the series 2-0

India vs Afghanistan, Highlights, 2nd T20: Virat Kohli, who missed the first match due to personal reasons, is set to play in the second match at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, With the win in Mohali India leads the series 1-0

Shivam Dube and Yashasvi Jaiswal thumped the Afghan bowling to take India to a relatively easier yet another series victory at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.

India vs Afghanistan Score, 2nd T20: Axar Patel after winning Player Of the Match
Feels good, I just realised that I have got 200 T20 wickets. But what is important to keep doing well for India, honestly a few years later I won’t remember how many wickets I took. I have been trying to bowl a bit slower, vary my lengths and now I have been to gauge these things better. Now I have the confidence to bowl at all times, even in the powerplay. You need to be mentally prepared as a bowler in T20 cricket. Ready to concede a six because that same ball could get you a wicket on another day. Earlier, I used to vary my plans if a batter was hitting me, but now I stick to my plans and make the batters take the chance against me.

India vs Afghanistan Score, 2nd T20: Rohit Sharma after the game
It is a great feeling, it has been a long journey starting way back in 2007. I’ve cherished every moment I have spent here. We have been clear with what we wanted to do, very clear message to everyone and when you see a performance like that, you can be really proud. One thing is talking about it, but to actually go there and play that way is a proud feeling. The last two games, we’ve ticked a lot of boxes. They’ve had a great couple of years, Jaiswal has played Test cricket now and even T20I. He has shown what he is capable of. He has the talent and has a great range of shots. Dube is a big guy, very powerful and can take on the spinners. That is his role and he has come out and played two crucial innings for us.

India vs Afghanistan Score, 2nd T20: Ibrahim Zadran after the game
We were quite short. We had a good start but not very good after that. Sometimes we play well in the powerplay, sometimes in the middle and sometimes at the death. We need to build the momentum throughout and not repeat mistakes to have a good T20 World Cup. (On Gulbadin Naib) He’s the most senior guy, we trust him and when he played a few shots in the powerplay, we wanted him to take that momentum throughout the innings.

Indore: A young man was detained after he defied the security arrangements and reached cricketer Virat Kohli and hugged him during the India-Afghanistan T20 match at Holkar Stadium in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore on Sunday, police said.

At that time, the star batsman was fielding on the ground.

After detaining him, cops took the young man to Tukoganj police station.

A police official said that the youth had a ticket for the match and entered the Holkar Stadium from Narendra Hirwani Gate.

‘Not A Specialist’ Rahul Removed From Wicketkeeping Role For England Tests: Report

KL Rahul will not be keeping wickets for India for the England Test series. The BCCI reportedly wants a ‘specialist’ to play the role.

KL Rahul will not be keeping wickets for India against England© Twitter

Veteran Indian cricketer KL Rahul, who kept wickets for the first time in a Test series during India’s tour of South Africa, has reportedly been relieved from the responsibility. Though Rahul impressed many with his skills behind the stumps, he will reportedly not be used as a wicket-keeper batter in the 5-match Test series between India and England. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee and the team management are looking at specialist wicket-keeper KS Bharat to fulfill that role for the team in the upcoming assignment.

As the BCCI announced the squad for the first two Tests against England, KS Bharat and Dhruv Jurel were picked for the wicket-keeper’s role, with the latter earning his maiden Test call-up.

As per a report in the Times of India, the BCCI doesn’t think Rahul will be the right fit for the wicket-keeper’s role on spin-friendly home pitches, hence, they’ve picked two specialists for the assignment.

“Rahul will play as a specialist batter from now on. While in overseas Tests you just have to stand back to the pacers, wicketkeeping in India, where spinners operate in tandem, isn’t easy. The ball can bounce or spin viciously on the spin-friendly home wickets. You’ve to keep moving up and down as a keeper. We want a specialist in that role.

“Rahul, on the other hand, is one of our most valuable batting assets. We don’t want to burn him out by making him do the glovework as well. There is also the chance of him catching an injury while standing behind the stumps, which we can’t afford. Bharat and Jurel will be our wicketkeepers in this series.

“Jurel is a talented keeper-bat. We’ve been tracking this 22-year-old since the time he was playing for India in the U-19 team,” TOI quoted the source as saying.

Australian Open 2024: Emma Raducanu, Novak Djokovic, Naomi Osaka among storylines

A host of illustrious names have returned to action at the start of the 2024 season, adding more star power to an eagerly anticipated first Grand Slam of the year at the Australian Open.

Novak Djokovic is aiming for a record-extending 11th men’s singles title – and an outright record 25th Grand Slam singles title – with Aryna Sabalenka looking to defend the women’s singles.

The tournament starts at Melbourne Park on Sunday, concluding with the finals weekend on 27-28 January.

Here, BBC Sport picks out five of the key storylines going into the event.

Raducanu’s return
Britain’s Emma Raducanu is back on court after a long period on the sidelines and will be the focus of lots of attention.

The 21-year-old Briton spent eight months out following wrist and ankle surgeries last year, returning with a victory over Romania’s Gabi Ruse at the recent Auckland Open before losing to Wimbledon semi-finalist Elina Svitolina.

Expectations about Raducanu’s progress must be tempered and patience is required. Pulling out of two exhibition matches in Melbourne this week was illustrative of the precautionary measures she is taking.

A host of physical problems hampered her progress following the shock 2021 US Open victory which catapulted her from relative obscurity to sporting superstardom.

Avoiding major injuries – although minor niggles after a long absence may be unavoidable – will be the key to a productive season.

With an injury-protected ranking of 103, Raducanu will start in the Australian Open main draw after benefitting from the withdrawal of several players above her.

“I think success to me in the long-term is to play a full season, to be healthy throughout and be able to train consistent weeks,” she said.

“I know my level is there, I just need to keep working on it to make it more consistent.”

Raducanu ‘feeling good’ before Australian Open return

Djokovic still the man to beat
Serbian great Djokovic calls the Australian Open his “second home”, such has been his dominance over the years.

Since claiming the first major of his career there in 2008, Djokovic has gone on to win nine more titles which include each of the past four years he has been able to play.

The men’s world number one, who has lost two of his past 48 singles matches at Melbourne Park, has not been beaten there since a defeat by South Korea’s Chung Hyeon in 2018.

Time may not be on his side but the 36-year-old is showing few signs of slowing down, having won three of the four majors last year in one of the very best seasons of his career.

This year started with a defeat by Australia’s Alex de Minaur in the United Cup, where he was hampered by a wrist injury.

However, history shows that Djokovic – who has encountered physical issues during each of his past two triumphs – has the knack of producing his best in Melbourne, no matter what obstacles are in his way.

Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Italy’s Jannik Sinner are considered the likeliest of the younger contingent to threaten his dominance this year, while last year’s beaten finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas and two-time runner-up Daniil Medvedev have strong pedigree.

However, Djokovic will not see long-time rival Rafael Nadal after the 22-time major champion – in what could be the start of his final season before retirement – pulled out with another injury setback.

Can Osaka challenge the next gen?
When Naomi Osaka won her fourth major title at the 2021 Australian Open, it felt like she would lead the women’s game for years to come as both an athlete and an advocate.

Later that year the Japanese superstar opened up about suffering depression, taking extended breaks from the tour as a result, before an even longer absence as she gave birth to her daughter Shai in 2023.

Now the 26-year-old is back from maternity leave and says returning as a mother has given her a “different mindset”.

The early signs are she remains the same talent, showing glimpses of her explosive shot-making and fleetness of foot on her return in Brisbane last week.

There is no doubt Osaka has the technical tools to go back to the very top. How quickly she can challenge for the biggest prizes again remains to be seen.

Poland’s Iga Swiatek has dominated the WTA game for almost two years and a fine start to 2024 has seen the world number one extend her unbeaten run to 16 matches after helping Poland reach the United Cup final.

Sabalenka is continuing to push Swiatek. The 25-year-old Belarusian, who briefly replaced Swiatek at the top of the rankings last season, reached at least the semi-finals of all four majors in 2023 and will be confident of a strong title defence in Melbourne.

Sabalenka saw her 15-match winning streak ruthlessly ended in the Brisbane final by Kazakhstan’s 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, who is another serious contender.

And it will be fascinating to see how American teenage Coco Gauff, who defended her WTA title in Auckland last week, will deal with her new-found status as a Grand Slam champion after a triumphant US Open victory which illustrated her growing maturity and inner belief.

Could this be Murray’s last stand?

When you think back to an emotional Andy Murray telling the media at the 2019 Australian Open he thought he would soon have to retire because of impending hip surgery, it still defies logic the 36-year-old will be playing again in Melbourne this year.

Former world number one Murray, with metal inserted into his hip joint, continues to plug away as he aims for another deep run at a major.

Now 44th in the world, the Briton came close to a seeding – as one of the top 32 men – at Wimbledon and the US Open last year.

But the end to the season was rockier. Starting from the US Open in August, he finished the year with three wins from his final six tournaments and a shoulder injury kept him out of the Davis Cup Finals.

Picking up a sickness bug and bruising the meniscus in his knee meant the start of his pre-season was “not straightforward”.

Speaking to BBC Sport two weeks ago in Brisbane, Murray accepted this year could be his final one on the tour if it proved to be as challenging as the end to last season.

However, he thought practice sessions had showed his level “was good enough” to make encouraging progress in Melbourne and beyond. For how long he does not yet know.

No more late nights?
Murray spoke for pretty much everyone when he described finishing his Australian Open second-round match last year at 4:04am local time as “a farce”.

Questions were raised in the aftermath about who these late finishes actually benefitted and what solutions could be found to avoid them.

As a consequence, the Australian Open has tweaked its schedule – a move it says will help.

Two instead of three matches will feature in the day session on Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena, which organisers believe will prevent marathon contests pushing back the night-session matches too much.

Novak Djokovic vs Steve Smith: Score is ‘love-all’ says Sachin Tendulkar about the fun battle

Sachin Tendulkar was in awe of the moment shared by Steve Smith and Novak Djokovic as the stars would engage in a fun battle ahead of the Australian Open 2024.

Sachin Tendulkar was left in awe of seeing Steve Smith and Novak Djokovic engage in a fun battle ahead of the Australian Open.

In a captivating display of cross-sport talent, Smith left tennis maestro Djokovic spellbound with his adeptness on the tennis court during a pre-Australian Open charity event at Melbourne Park. The Australian cricketer, known for his prowess on the cricket field, demonstrated that his athletic skills extend beyond the boundary ropes.

The exhibition match, which also featured Australian athlete Peter Bol, was one of several charitable engagements leading up to the commencement of the Australian Open on January 14th. The crowd at Rod Laver Arena witnessed a light-hearted yet competitive exchange between the sports stars, with Smith showcasing his quick footwork and sharp reflexes.

Djokovic, who has claimed 24 Grand Slam titles, served up a challenge to Smith with a gentle serve directed at him. Smith, with remarkable agility, sidestepped and returned the ball cleanly back into play, much to the astonishment of Djokovic.

The tennis champion was so taken aback by the cricketer’s skillful return that he chose not to attempt another shot, instead offering a gesture of respect to Smith’s unexpected tennis flair.

While Djokovic’s prowess on the tennis court is undisputed, his foray into cricket during the event was met with less success. Attempting to wield the cricket bat, Djokovic swung and missed, a stark contrast to his usual precision with a tennis racquet. Yet, when he reverted to his familiar tool of trade, Djokovic managed to send the ball soaring into the stands, delighting the spectators with his power.

The battle would earn praise from Tendulkar, who would say that it was great to see two accomplished sportspersons having a wonderful moment.

“Beautiful to see two accomplished sportsmen having a moment. The score is ‘love-all’,” tweeted Tendulkar.

After Mohammed Shami, Another Star India Pacer Gets Injured. Report Says He Is Doubtful For England Tests

The pacer on Friday picked up a left quadriceps injury during Karnataka’s Ranji Trophy match against Gujarat.

Pacer Prasidh Krishna on Friday picked up a left quadriceps injury during Karnataka’s Ranji Trophy match against Gujarat, casting a cloud of uncertainty over his availability for selection for the upcoming assignments, including India’s home Test series against England. India pacer Prasidh limped out of the field after bowling 14.5 overs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad during the Group C match. The paceman picked up the wickets of Manan Hingrajia and Siddharth Desai as Karnataka bundled out Gujarat for 264 runs in 88 overs on the first day.

PTI understands while his MRI scans results are awaited, Prasidh is all set to miss the match against Gujarat.

However, his availability for the five-match home Test series against England, staring later this month, is yet to be ascertained.

But in general, quadriceps injury takes at least four to six weeks to heal as per its intensity.

The 27-year-old is currently under the care of Karnataka team physio, but as a BCCI contracted player, he can also link up with the India ‘A’ support staff, who are also in Ahmedabad as part of the two-day match against the touring England Lions.

Prasidh had made his Test debut during India’s recent tour to South Africa after missing out on the action for nearly a year owing to a lumbar stress fracture.

“Frustrated…”: Rohit Sharma’s Straight Talk On Run Out Mix Up With Shubman Gill In India vs Afghanistan T20I

India skipper Rohit Sharma on Thursday said the team management will consciously put the players in uncomfortable situations ahead of the T20 World Cup in June. The three-match series against Afghanistan is India’s last before the T20 World Cup which is scheduled to be hosted by the United States and the West Indies in June.

India won the opener by six wickets. The game marked Rohit’s comeback to the shortest format after 14 months.

“We want to keep trying different things – try and bowl our bowlers in different situations of the game, like you saw today, Washi (Washington Sundar) bowled the 19th over. We want to challenge ourselves in the areas we are slightly uncomfortable with and the bowlers are not used to that.

“We want to try and do that. Keeping all of those things in mind, we’ll try and do whatever is possible but not at the cost of the game. We want to make sure that we come out on top and play the game well. All in all, today was a good day for us,” he said at the post match presentation.

India gunned down the 159-run target in 17.3 overs. Shivam Dube starred with an unbeaten 60 off 40 balls and also took a wicket with his medium pace.

“There are lot of positives. Shivam Dube, the way Jitesh batted, Tilak as well and then Rinku is in good form as well.”

Rohit could not open his account after a mix up with Shubman Gill resulted in his run out. In a rare sight, the India skipper vented out his anger following the miscommunication.

“These things happen (on the run-out). When it happens you feel frustrated, you want to be out there and score runs for the team. Everything will not go your way. We won the game, that’s more important. I wanted Gill to carry on, unfortunately got out after playing a very good little innings.” Man of the match Dube was pleased with his effort in his comeback game.

“Why Didn’t Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Play After T20 World Cup…” Ex-BCCI Selector’s Big Take On Stars’ T20I Comeback

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were named in the T20I squad for the three match series against Afghanistan, which is the last T20I contest that Indian cricket team will be playing ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup

The biggest development that will happening in Indian cricket starting on Thursday will be the return of Rohit Sharma in T20I cricket. Both he and Virat Kohli were named in the T20I squad for the three match series against Afghanistan, which is the last T20I contest that Indian cricket team will be playing ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup. While Virat Kohli will not play the first T20I against Afghanistan, Rohit Sharma will play. Speaking to Star Sports, former Chief of Selectors MSK Prasad spoke on having the best possible team play against Afghanistan

He said: “I would definitely prefer to have the best possible team. The reason is that these are the only three T20s that are left before we get into the IPL and get into an actual T20 format. But for the injured players, I think I would definitely have our main players playing in this T20. Let’s not forget that Afghanistan is a very competitive side and will do whatever possible.”

MSK Prasad also spoke on the inclusion of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the squad, he said: “I do understand that Rohit and Virat were given a bit of rest after the South Africa tour. I think that was needed, after a mega event like the ODI World Cup. They needed that kind of a break. So fortunately, they have had a healthy break and have done reasonably well, the youngsters. See, my opinion is there’s absolutely no doubt that Virat and Rohit will be a part of the T20 World Cup, so they should start playing right from this series.”

He also added: “The question arises, why didn’t they play after the last T20 World Cup. The reason they didn’t play is we were heading towards an ODI World Cup, so we predominantly wanted to focus on ODIs. That’s the reason they offered other youngsters who were maybe thinking towards the T20 World Cup. So that’s a wonderful thing from both of them, and even the selectors and team management have got it right. Because if we are heading towards the ODI World Cup, it is better to focus on the ODIs, and we had the WTC also. So they were focusing on test cricket and ODI cricket. Now that we are heading towards a T20, they should be back to action.”

MSK Prasad also spoke on who he think may feature in the final squad for the T20 World Cup, he said “I think players like Virat, Rohit, even for that matter, Shami, Bumrah, Siraj, Jadeja, and Hardik, other than those names, there are a few places where I feel players like Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson, if KL Rahul is keeping wickets, who is your second keeper? What if Rishabh Pant is fit? What if Ishan Kishan is ready?

Supreme Court Judgement on Bilkis Bano Convicts ‘Victory For All Women’, Says Vinesh Phogat

Meanwhile, the Indian Express has reported that nine out of the 11 convicts whose remission the apex court undid on Monday have gone “missing” from their villages in Gujarat’s Dahod.

Photos: X/@Phogat_Vinesh and The Wire.

In an unusual message of support, wrestler Vinesh Phogat wrote to Bilkis Bano about the recent Supreme Court judgement in the latter’s favour, calling it a “victory for all of us women”.

“Bilkis ji, this is a victory for all of us women. You have fought a long struggle. We take courage looking at your journey,” Phogat said in Hindi on X (formerly Twitter).

Bano is the survivor of a gruesome attack during the 2002 Gujarat riots in which she and her family members were gang-raped by a mob. Fourteen of her relatives were also slain in the incident.

Eleven people convicted and sentenced to life for the gang-rape and mass murder were released early by the Gujarat government in 2022, but the Supreme Court cancelled their remission on Monday (January 8) and ordered them to report back to prison.

Phogat is among the main faces of last year’s protests by prominent wrestlers against BJP MP and former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is accused of sexually harassing at least seven wrestlers. Singh has denied the allegations.

Phogat is also the first Indian woman wrestler to have won a gold at both the Commonwealth and Asian Games, as well as the only Indian woman wrestler to win multiple medals at the World Wrestling Championships.

In other news related to the Supreme Court’s judgement on Monday, the Indian Express reports that nine of the 11 convicts in the case went “missing” from the twin villages of Randhikpur and Singvad in Gujarat’s Dahod district.

Bano was also in Randhikpur when the Godhra train burning, which triggered the 2002 riots, occurred.

Akhambhai Chaturbhai Raval (87), father of one of the convicts, Govind Nai (55), claimed his son was innocent and blamed the conviction on “political vendetta of [the] Congress”.

He told IE that Govind had left the house “a week ago”. However, its report also cites a local policeman as saying that Nai had left home on Saturday (January 6).

His parents are reported as also saying they are a “Hindu faith-abiding family, incapable of committing the crimes” that have been alleged against their son as well as against Nai’s uncle and Akhambhai’s brother, Jashvant Nai, who is another of the 11 convicts.

“I wish and pray that he [Nai] gets to do seva [service] at the [Ram] mandir pratishthan in Ayodhya. It is better to do seva than do nothing and roam around every day. He has not been able to do anything since he was released [from prison],” Raval was quoted as saying.

“Going back to jail is not a big deal and it is not that he was out of jail unlawfully. He was released with due process of law and now the law has told him to go back, so he will go back.”

Sandeep Lamichhane: Nepal spinner handed eight-year jail sentence after being found guilty of rape

Sandeep Lamichhane (centre) was arrested in October 2022

Nepal spinner Sandeep Lamichhane has been sentenced to eight years in prison for raping an 18-year-old woman.

Lamichhane, who is not in custody, was not present when the sentence was handed down at a court in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old – Nepal’s most high-profile cricketer – was found guilty of the offence last month.

Lamichhane’s lawyer Saroj Ghimire told Reuters he intends to appeal against the verdict in a “higher court”.

“We are not convinced about the decision of the court,” said Ghimire. “The court has whimsically declared Sandeep to be a convict. Sandeep will go to the higher court for justice.”

Lamichhane – who has played in Australia’s Big Bash and the Indian Premier League – was suspended as Nepal captain in September 2022 due to the rape accusation.

After a warrant was issued for his arrest, he was taken into custody after flying home to Kathmandu from playing in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

What adjustments Dravid must make to fit Rohit and Kohli in T20Is: 6 India XIs, endless possibilities vs Afghanistan

What adjustments will head coach Rahul Dravid make to fit Kohli and Rohit in the playing XI for the T20I series against Afghanistan? Here are six possibilities.

How India might build their playing XI for the T20I series against Afghanistan?

In a day’s time, India will kick off their last and final assignment before the T20 World Cup in June. Having thrashed Australia 4-1 in November, right after the ODI World Cup final, and held South Africa to a 1-1 draw in an away contest, the team management should have been expected to head into the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, starting January 11 in Mohali, with a clearer picture about to their playing XI. But the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to the T20I fold has sparked more questions than resolving the remaining ones before the ICC event in the USA and the West Indies. With the big announcement made on Sunday, the selectors, as of now, have all but confirmed the two veterans for the World Cup, and with them making a comeback to the format after a 14-month hiatus, they will be certainties for the XI. But what adjustments will head coach Rahul Dravid make to fit Kohli and Rohit?

Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal – who will make way for Rohit?
As unfortunate as it stands, such is the nature of sport. Jaiswal and Gill have both had a fabulous 20223 in T20 cricket. The latter, who made his debut in the international format this year, scored 312 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 145.11, including a stunning century. He also had an 890-run IPL season for Gujarat Titans, which comprised three centuries and four fifties. On the other hand, the younger one was the fifth-highest run-getter in the last IPL season with 625 runs in 14 matches with a ton and five half-centuries. He later followed it up with a run tally of 430 runs in T20Is for India in 14 innings, which also included a 49-ball century during the Asian Games.

Jitesh Sharma vs Sanju Samson
Jitesh Sharma was handed a difficult role in the last two T20I series, of finishing the innings as No. 6 batter, and the youngster performed impressively in the four games he appeared against Australia and South Africa, scoring 64 runs in 42 balls at a strike rate of 150. However, Jitesh’s inclusion could largely depend on Rinku Singh’s presence, who is also competing for the finisher’s role. The other wicketkeeping option India have added is Sanju Samson, who earned a call-up in T20Is for the first time since he toured with a second-string Indian side to Ireland. And it was largely down to the sensational century he scored in the ODI series against South Africa last month.

Will Rinku Singh miss out?
At least not now. With Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya out with their respective injuries, Rinku will get a final chance to cement his place in the India T20I XI. In the 18 matches he has played so far for India, which includes the Asian Games run, the left-hander scored 262 runs at a strike rate of 180.68 with a boundary every 3.6 deliveries. However, his selection could come at the expense of India having a bowler less.

India’s star pacer Mohammed Shami has spoken on the ongoing Maldives issue and expressed his support for Indian tourism and encouraged fellow citizens to explore the beauty of the Indian beaches. No matter which way the country moves forward, it is good for everyone. PM is trying to make our country move forward so we should also support it,” Shami told ANI.

Apart from the Indian speedster, many sportspersons came out to criticize the ‘racist’ remarks against India by public figures in the Maldives and encouraged fellow citizens to explore the beauty of the Indian beaches.

After their historic win in South Africa in Cape Town, India will face England in the five-match Test series on January 25 next year with the first Test in Hyderabad. The fifth and final Test will be held in Dharamshala and the series will conclude on March 11.

In Solving BCCI’s Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma Dilemma, Report Says Jay Shah’s Role Is…

The wait for India’s squad announcement for the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan continues with just four days to go for the first match in Mohali.

The wait for India’s squad announcement for the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan continues with just four days to go for the first match in Mohali. Reports claimed that the squad will be announced on Friday but no new developments were reported from BCCI. A PTI report has claimed that the delay may be stemming from the dilemma over the inclusion of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli keeping the T20 World Cup 2024 in mind. The two senior cricketers have not played T20I cricket for quite some time and the report claimed that BCCI secretary Jay Shah may end up playing a big role.

“The flexibility will always be an issue but there would always be external factors that need to be countered. Did you see ICC promoting the tourney with Kohli’s giant billboard video in New York. MI handle put that aerial advert of Rohit and Shaheen Shah Afridi. So there will be external pressure,” a former BCCI office bearer said on condition of anonymity to PTI.

“It will be on Jay how much he can empower Agarkar’s committee. As of now you need to accommodate both or drop both. The sensible thing would be to include both for Afghanistan and not make any promise for World T20 till the IPL performance is monitored,” the veteran administrator said.

Bizarre scenes as two Bihar teams turn up for Mumbai Ranji Trophy match; start delayed due to heated exchanges, scuffle

The team that had reached the ground first was picked by the BCA president Rakesh Tiwary, while the other team was chosen by secretary Amit Kumar

Two Bihar teams turn up for Ranji Trophy match against Mumbai

A bizarre scene unfolded at the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna, which has much been in talks over the last few days over its poor infrastructure, on Friday as two teams claiming to be the Ranji Trophy squad of Bihar, turned up for the match against Mumbai. The confusion subsequently led to a delayed start to the game after heated exchanges and a scuffle between the officials of the Bihar Cricket Association (BCA), which required intervention from the local police. The match eventually began around 1 pm.

The team that had reached the ground first was picked by the BCA president Rakesh Tiwary, and it was the side that eventually played the game on Friday, while secretary Amit Kumar chose the other team. Not a single cricketer was named in both the squads.

Speaking to the Indian Express, Tiwary said his side has been picked on merit before revealing that the secretary has been suspended. He said: “We have picked the team on merit and that is the right team. You see the talent that is coming from Bihar. We have a cricketer (Sakib Hussain), who is picked in the IPL. We have a 12-year-old prodigy making his debut in the game. The other is being picked by the secretary who is suspended, so it can’t be the real team.”

In response, Kumar, having countered the suspension claim, questioned whether it is the BCCI president who selects the Indian team, reminding that a board release always has the signature of Secretary Jay Shah at the end.

“First things first: I won the election, and I am an official secretary of the BCA. You can’t suspend a secretary. Secondly, how can a president select a team? Have you ever seen BCCI president Roger Binny announcing the squad? You will always see the signature of Secretary Jay Shah,” he said.

“Be Neutral”: Rohit Sharma Slams ICC Match Referees, Indicates Bias Against India

While Rohit Sharma did not criticise the Newlands pitch directly, he was upfront in slamming the attack that Indian pitches come under, particularly for its spinning nature.

India vs South Africa: File image of skipper Rohit Sharma© AFP

Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma was in an attacking mood after the second Test against South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town. With the Test ending in less than five sessions, making it the shortest match in the format ever (in terms of number of balls bowled), there have been question marks on the quality of the pitch. On the first day of the match 23 wickets fell. Both India and South Africa batters found the going tough. They gave better account of themselves in the second innings, yet a two-day Test match was beyond explanation.

While Rohit Sharma did not criticise the Newlands pitch directly, he was upfront in slamming the attack that Indian pitches come under, particularly for its spinning nature.

“When you’re here to play Test cricket, you talk about Test cricket the ultimate prize and pinnacle, and then you should stand by it,” Rohit Sharma said.

“When you are put up like a challenge like that, you should come and face it. In India, day one the pitch starts turning, they keep talking about ‘puff of dust, puff of dust. So much crack here on the pitch’.”

Former England opener Chris Broad was the ICC match referee for the two-Test series and Rohit believes that global body’s empanelled referees should be “neutral”.

This is Real Aggression

“It’s important we stay neutral everywhere we go, especially the match referees. Some of these match referees are, they need to keep their eyes on how they rate pitches,” the skipper quite aggressively.

ICC match referee Andy Pycroft’s “average” rating for pitch used for the ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad also did not go down well with Rohit Sharma.

“I still can’t believe the World Cup final pitch was rated ‘below average’ (average actually). A batter got a hundred there. How can that be a poor pitch?” he asked. “So, The ICC and the match referees need to looking into it. Start Rating pitches based on what they see and not based on countries (hosting). I hope they keep their eyes and ears open and look into those aspects. I am all for pitches like this (like the one at Newlands).

11 Balls, 6 wickets, 0 Runs: India’s Spectacular Collapse vs South Africa Is A First In 147 Years

India vs South Africa: In a space of 11 balls, India lost the last six wickets without adding any run in the first innings

India vs South Africa: Lungi Ngidi celebrates after dismissing KL Rahul

It was one of those days, where unexpected things were always round the corner in Cape Town. On a bright sunny morning on Wednesday, South Africa capitulated for just 55 with fast bowler Mohammed Siraj breathing fire. He took six wickets as India bowled out its rivals for the lowest score ever by any team against the side. However, that was just the first part of the thriller that was about to unfold. India were expected to take a huge lead. Though the Rohit Sharma-led side took the lead comfortably, the incidents that began to unravel from the 34th over of the Indian innings was beyond any explanation.

With the scoreboard reading 153/4, Lungi Ngidi first scalped KL Rahul. In the same over, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah departed too. In the next over. Kagiso Rabada removed Virat Kohli and Prasidh Krishna. Mukesh Kumar was run out. In a space of 11 balls, India lost the last six wickets without adding any run.

This is the most number of wickets that has ever fallen on a particular score in a Test innings. Since the time Test cricket started in 1877, no other team has lost more than five wickets in the format on one particular score.

Before this there were four instances where five wickets fell on a particular score.

Former Indian cricket team coach Ravi Shastri described the scene in the most hilarious way possible. Hear it for yourself.

Talking about the match, India collapsed to 153 all out in their first innings in the final session after skittling out South Africa for 55 on the opening day of the second and final Test on Wednesday. Virat Kohli top-scored with 46 while captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill made 39 and 36 respectively. India faced just 34.5 overs. They had resumed the post-tea session at 111 for 4.

Earlier, pacer Mohammed Siraj ripped through the South Africa batting line-up with a sensational six-wicket haul as India bowled the home side at stroke of lunch.

Captain Dean Elgar’s decision to bat first after winning the toss in his farewell Test turned out to be a nightmare for the home side.

Kyle Verreynne made 15 and David Bedingham 12 as all the other remaining South African batters were dismissed for single-digit scores.

Brief Scores: South Africa: 55 all out in 23.2 overs (Kyle Verreynne 15; Mohammed Siraj 6/15).

Luke Littler: Who is the 16-year-old making history at World Darts Championship?

Nicknamed The Nuke, here’s everything you need to know about the new darting prodigy – from learning to play in nappies as a toddler to his celebratory meals going viral.

Sixteen-year-old Luke Littler is making history at the World Darts Championship – and is now one win away from becoming the youngest-ever champion.

Nicknamed “The Nuke”, the teenager’s sensational performances have seen him become the youngest player to reach the final and have won plaudits from his idol Phil “The Power” Taylor.

He swept away darts legend Raymond van Barneveld, a five-time world champion, to secure a place in the quarter-finals – before beating Northern Ireland’s Brendan Dolan to reach the semi-finals.

Littler is now one step away from glory after cruising to victory over 2018 champion Rob Cross in the last four.

Here’s everything you need to know about the sport’s new prodigy – from learning to play in nappies as a toddler to his celebratory meals going viral.

Playing darts at 18 months old

He may only be a teenager but Littler, from Warrington, Cheshire, has been practising his throwing for some time.

He told Sky News: “There’s a video on YouTube of me when I was 18 months in a nappy listening to Raymond van Barneveld’s music, listening to Phil Taylor’s music, doing their celebrations.

“That’s when it started – 18 months and in a nappy on a magnetic board.

“[Aged] four or five I was on a proper board but it was a bit low and then about seven to eight (years old), that’s when I started playing [at] the proper height and the proper length. So it’s just been all darts in my life so far.”

Talent is one thing, but having the right support system to nurture it is just as important.

The teen clearly thinks a lot of his parents, who he says are “proud” of what he’s achieved so far.

“They just can’t believe (it), I can’t believe it myself,” he told Sky News.

“But it’s just good to have a set of parents who are supportive and that are always there for me and I’ve got a good management team around me. So it’s just the best group of people that can be around me, to be honest.”

Viral celebrations

A photo of Littler celebrating his first-round win at the PDC World Dart Championships with a kebab went viral on social media.

The 16-year-old’s newly formed fan base probably expected a similar photo to come out after his second victory too.

But a plot twist came the following morning, though, as Littler revealed on Sky News that he opted for a different celebratory meal.

“Last night was just a standard KFC,” he boasted.

Fans and fame

Littler’s matches have seen the famously rowdy crowd at London’s Alexandra Palace (or Ally Pally) chanting: “You’ve got school in the morning.”

His celebrity status is rising with every dart he throws. His Instagram account has gone from 4,000 followers at the start of this tournament to 23,500 and counting.

Littler told Sky News he could feel the nation’s support while on the big stage.

“Everyone’s cheering, wanting my autograph and everything,” he said.

“Even young kids having my darts shirt on… It was good to see when I stepped on the stage.”

He also talked about the popularity of his personalised “The Nuke” darts sets.

“After my first two games in Ally Pally, 900 sets sold,” he said. “People all over the world… [I] couldn’t believe it. 900 sets, for winning two games at the Ally Pally!”

His career so far

Littler won his first match at the PDC World Championship on Wednesday, averaging an astonishing 106.12 in his demolition of former Lakeside champion Christian Kist in the first round.

He held off a mid-match charge from the experienced Andrew Gilding to knock out the 20th seed with a 3-1 win in the second round.

In the third round, Littler beat Canadian Matt Campbell four sets to one to make history as the youngest player to ever reach the last 16 of the tournament.

A sensational performance followed against van Barneveld on 30 December, with the teenager winning 4-1 over the man 40 years his senior.

Watch: David Warner Loses ‘Baggy Green’ Ahead Of Farewell Test. His Heartfelt Appeal Goes Viral

Australia batter David Warner has revealed that his Baggy Green (Test cap) was lost on transit on the eve of his farewell Test in Sydney on Tuesday. Taking to social media, Warner shared a heartfelt message and pleaded for the safe return of his baggy green. In a video uploaded on Instagram, Warner shared a “last resort” appeal, revealing that his Baggy Green was stolen from his backpack. The 37-year-old had return to his hometown, Sydney, following Australia’s win over Pakistan in the Boxing-Day Test last week.

Warner revealed that the backpack was placed inside a larger bag, which was flown on a Qantas flight from Melbourne to Sydney on December 31 with the rest of the team’s luggage.

“Inside this backpack was my Baggy Green. It’s sentimental to me. It’s something I’d love to have in my hands walking out there this week. If it’s the backpack you really wanted, I have a spare one here. You won’t get into trouble. Please reach out to Cricket Australia or myself via my social media. I’m happy to give this to you if you return my Baggy Green,” Warner said in a video uploaded on his Instagram handle.

Warner called on the public to assist him in finding his baggy green, promising no consequences for the person who returns it. The veteran opener even offered to give up a spare backpack to the person.

Warner also revealed that he reached out to the airlines, as well as the hotel staff, but there has been no hint of anyone opening his backpack in the CCTV footage.

“We’ve gone through CCTV footage, they’ve got some blind spots apparently. We’ve spoken to the Quay West hotel who we absolutely trust, they’ve gone through their cameras and no one has gone into our rooms,” he added.

Australia opted Tuesday against playing a second spinner in the final Test against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground, naming an unchanged line-up for Warner’s farewell match.

Skipper Pat Cummins confirmed Australia’s fast-bowling trio had all recovered well from the second Test in Melbourne four days ago after clinching the three-match series with a tense 79-run win.

Argentina to Retire Number 10 Jersey in Honour of Lionel Messi: Report

Lionel Messi has completed his dream of winning the World Cup for Argentina thus making him among the most decorated footballers of all time. (Image: AFP)

Reports suggest that the Argentina FA could retire Lionel Messi’s iconic ’10’ jersey to preserve and honour his legacy to the footballing nation.

The legacy of Messi for both club and country is endless as the Argentine is now enjoying some time off after his season with Inter Miami came to an early halt. However, there is big news regarding the Argentina F.A.

Reports suggest that the Albicelestes will be looking to retire the iconic number ’10’ shirt in honour of Messi’s contributions to Argentinian football. According to the Spanish daily Marca quoted a statement from Claudio ‘Chiqui’ Tapia which he gave to a local paper where he said,” “When Messi retires from the national team, we will not allow anyone else to wear the number 10 after him. This number ’10’ will be retired for life in his honour. It’s the least we can do for him.”

Lionel Messi managed to complete his lifelong dream of being able to win the World Cup with a historic run to secure the trophy. Many doubted whether he could step up and lead the side after his 2014 WC finals loss to Germany and the losses against Chile in the Copa America.

But since then he has stepped up his game along with the improvement from the manager as Lionel Scaloni took charge of the side where he managed to build a dominant unit with the side having only lost one game in the group stage against Saudi Arabia.

Argentina had made the attempt to retire the ’10’ jersey in honour of the late great Diego Armando Maradona back in 2002 but FIFA’s strict rules on jersey numbers where the teams must use numbers from 1 to 23 means that someone is forced to take up the iconic kit in the future.

Messi managed to silence his biggest critics after having a crazy run of form in the past few years. It started off by winning the Copa America followed by the Finnallissima and then to top it off, the FIFA World Cup in 2022 to put himself above the pantheon of greats.

David Warner retires from ODI cricket but keeps himself available for 2025 Champions Trophy

David Warner has said that he is retiring from ODI cricket along with Tests but will be available for the 2025 Champions Trophy if he is needed.

David Warner has said that he is retiring from ODI and Test cricket. (PTI)

Australia’s David Warner has announced his retirement from ODI cricket. The 37-year-old had previously stated that he would be ending his Test career after Australia’s upcoming Test against Pakistan in Sydney but Warner has now said that he will be hanging up his boots in ODI cricket as well. However, the opener has said that he will keep himself available for selection in the Champions Trophy in 2025.

Warner has said that winning the World Cup in India this year was a massive achievement and this was something he had thought about earlier as well. “I’m definitely retiring from one-day cricket as well,” he told reporters at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Monday. “That was something that I had said through the World Cup, get through that, and winning it in India, I think that’s a massive achievement.”

“So I’ll make that decision today, to retire from those forms, which does allow me to go and play some other leagues around the world and sort of get the one-day team moving forward a little bit. I know there’s a Champions Trophy coming up. If I’m playing decent cricket in two years’ time and I’m around and they need someone, I’m going to be available.”

If Warner doesn’t make a return in the Champions Trophy, he retires 6932 runs at an average of 45.30 with 22 centuries. He is Australia’s sixth-highest run scorer in the format and is only second to former captain Ricky Ponting’s tally of 29 centuries in the list for most tons for a player from the country in ODIs. Ponting had also played 205 more ODI innings than Warner.

Luke Littler: 16-year-old darts sensation books place in quarter-finals of World Darts Championship

The teenager beat darts legend Raymond van Barneveld – a player 40 years his senior – in the last 16 at Alexandra Palace in London.

Teenage darts sensation Luke Littler has booked his place in the quarter-finals of the World Darts Championship.

The 16-year-old star beat darts legend and five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld – a player 40 years his senior – four sets to one in their last 16 match at Alexandra Palace in London.

Littler – the youngest player ever to reach the last 16 of the tournament – will now face Northern Ireland’s Brendan Dolan in the quarter-finals on New Year’s Day.

Who is Luke ‘The Nuke’ Littler?

He may only be a teenager but Littler, from Warrington, Cheshire, has been practising his throwing for some time.

Raymond van Barneveld embraces Luke Littler

He told Sky News: “There’s a video on YouTube of me when I was 18 months in a nappy listening to Raymond van Barneveld’s music, listening to Phil Taylor’s music, doing their celebrations.

“That’s when it started – 18 months and in a nappy on a magnetic board.

His form means he’s suddenly on his way to being a household name, but his talent has been evident for some time.

Nepal’s former national cricket team captain Sandeep Lamichhane was on Friday convicted by a court of raping a minor. In January, Nepal court released Lamichhane who was arrested after a 17-year-old girl alleged that he raped her in a hotel room in Kathmandu in August last year. Lamichhane, 23, is Nepal’s most high-profile cricketer, and the first cricketer from Nepal to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when he made his debut for the Delhi Capitals franchise in 2018. A single bench of Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal passed the order on Friday following the conclusion of the final hearings that started on Sunday, the Kathmandu Post reported. The Kathmandu District Court on Friday convicted Lamichhane of rape. The next hearing will determine the jail term for the senior member of the national team, the report said.

Lamichhne is currently out on bail. On January 12, the Patan High Court ordered the release of the cricketer. Responding to a review petition filed by Lamichhane, a joint bench of judges Dhruva Raj Nanda and Ramesh Dahal ordered Lamichhane’s release on a bail bond of Rs 2 million with conditions.

The Kathmandu District Court on November 4, 2022, had passed the order to send Lamichhane to the Sundhara-based central jail after a detention hearing. Lamichhane had moved the high court challenging the order.

The Kathmandu District Attorney’s Office filed a case against Lamichhane accusing him of raping the girl on August 21.

The minor had filed a case against the cricketer on September 6 at the Metropolitan Police Circle, Gaushala.

Nepal Police arrested him on October 6 at Tribhuvan International Airport on his return from Trinidad & Tobago where he played in the Caribbean Premier League.

Through the charge sheet, the district attorney had demanded compensation from Lamichhane for the victim’s alleged physical and mental torture. After the charge sheet was filed, Lamichhane’s bank account and property were frozen.

A wily leg-spinner, armed with a vicious googly, he was a much sought-after cricketer in other big-ticket T20 leagues around the world, including the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the CPL.

‘India don’t win anything…they’ve been nowhere’: Vaughan shreds Rohit Sharma and Co. after SA Test loss

Vaughan highlighted the lack of achievement by the Indian team despite having plenty of resources at their disposal.

Michael Vaughan reiterated his ‘underachieving’ remark after India’s loss in 1st South Africa Test

Former England captain Michael Vaughan reiterated his old remark calling India an “underachieving team” after the thrashing they received from South Africa in the opening Test match in Centurion on Thursday. The series was called India’s best chance to conquer the ‘final frontier’, which remains unticked by the Test team in 31 years of their rivalry. But the loss by an innings and 32 runs at the SuperSport Park kept the unwanted streak alive as South Africa took an unassailable lead in the two-match contest.

Speaking on Fox Sports on the result of the opening Test match of the South Africa-India series, which ended in just three days, Vaughan highlighted the lack of achievement by the Indian team despite having plenty of resources at their disposal.

Before the Centurion Test, India also lost the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad and were defeated by the Aussies again in the World Test Championship final earlier in June. The dual loss extended their ICC trophy drought, having last won back in 2013 under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

Vaughan asked former Australia cricketer Mark Waugh, also part of the panel in Fox Sports: “Do you think, in terms of cricket, India are one of the most underachieving sports teams in the world?”

The Aussie returned back the question instead and the veteran batter said: “They haven’t won much in recent times. I think they are [an underachieving side]. They don’t win anything. When was the last time they won something? With all the talent they have, all the skill-set.

“They’ve won in Australia twice [Test series in 2018/19 and 2020/21]. Magnificent, but the last few World Cups, been nowhere, in the last few T20 World Cups, been nowhere. They’re a good team, have got plenty of talent but with all the talent they have and the resource they have, I just don’t think they win.”

SA vs IND, 1st Test: Elgar, Rabada & Burger Shine As South Africa Defeat India By An Innings & 32 Runs At Centurion

India batters were no match for South Africa pacers as the pace trio of Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Burger ran through India’s entire batting line-up.

Nandre Burger’s sensational spell combined with South Africa’s all-rounded performance secured a win by an innings and 32 runs for the Proteas against India in the first Test on Thursday at the SuperSport Park.

Burger with his lethal bouncers and precise line and length pushed India batters back against the wall.

A game that seemed to be headed for the fourth day was concluded on the third day itself. India batters were no match for South Africa pacers as the pace trio of Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Burger ran through India’s entire batting line-up.

Virat Kohli was the sole batter who knew how to churn out runs on a surface which proved to be too much for the rest of the batters.

India’s batting crumbled on Day 3

After a dismal start to their second innings, South Africa struck India hard by removing Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahu in quick succession.

After Burger removed Ravichandran Ashwin for a golden duck, India’s fate was more or less sealed.

Jasprit Bumrah’s runout following a brilliant effort in the field by Dean Elgar caused a mood of dismay. A brilliant review from the South Africa team saw Mohammed Siraj gloving the ball straight to the wicketkeeper.

Prasidh Krishna struggled hard but Jansen got the better of Kohli (76) which brought an end to India’s struggle within the first three days.

India’s top 3 failed to deliver

Earlier in the day, India skipper Rohit Sharma’s dreadful run in South Africa, especially against Kagiso Rabada continued. Rabada’s inward angling delivery left Rohit baffled as he failed to read the line which resulted in the ball crashing into the stumps.

The veteran right-handed batter got removed for an eight-ball duck and this dismissal marked his 7th in 11 innings against Rabada.

Yashasvi Jaiswal tried to leave the delivery, but the ball glanced off his glove and went straight to the wicketkeeper.

Shubamn Gill looked set to spend a good amount of time on the field but his attempt to play a shot across the straight line failed. Marco Jansen picked his first as Gill departed with a score of 26(37).

“When You Get Opportunity…”: Rohit Sharma’s Blunt Message To “Other 3” Pacers After 1st Test Loss

India lost the opening Test inside three days by an innings and 32 runs after scoring 245 and 131 in the two innings but the game-changer certainly was being taken for 408 runs by South Africa in their first innings.

Jasprit Bumrah lacked support from other end as there was no reason to concede 400 plus runs on a bowling friendly track where South African speedsters showed how to go about the job, a dejected Indian skipper Rohit Sharma said on Thursday. India lost the opening Test inside three days by an innings and 32 runs after scoring 245 and 131 in the two innings but the game-changer certainly was being taken for 408 runs by South Africa in their first innings.

Save Bumrah, who took four wickets and to an extent Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna got pasting of their lives.

“This was not a 400-run wicket and we gave too many runs. We sprayed the ball all around, but it happens. One can’t depend on one particular bowler (Bumrah), the other three pacers also needed to perform their roles, we could learn from how South Africa bowled,” Rohit said after the match.

He admitted that although there wasn’t lack of effort but Bumrah couldn’t alone keep the pressure on Proteas batters.

“Bumrah bowled well and we all know his quality. All he wanted was a bit of support which he didn’t get. That happens. All three tried hard, bending their backs but didn’t happen the way we wanted to. But games like these teaches you a lot as to what you want to do as a bowling unit,” the skipper observed.

Young Prasidh, who has just had 12 first-class matches under his belt, couldn’t get the measure of bounce and carry at Supersport Park and went for 93 runs in 20 overs on Test debut.

The skipper conceded Prasidh is a bit under-cooked but also insisted that his team would show faith in him.

“Of course, he is a little bit inexperienced. He has got the tools to come out here and play the game. Obviously, if I look at the bowlers that we have back in India, some of them are injured, some not available, so we tried picking guys who are available, based on conditions,” he reasoned.

“I completely agree that he (Krishna) hasn’t played a lot of (red ball) cricket but there are three guys in their team also, who haven’t played a lot of (red ball cricket) but they showed what is required.

“More than what’s there in the legs, I think it’s in the mind. How you treat your mind and how you play the game is more important. If you think that oh, I haven’t played, lot of Tests or FC cricket, then it’s not going to help,” the skipper was clear.

Stalwart batter Virat Kohli became the first batter to score 2000 runs in seven different calendar years during India’s crushing defeat to South Africa in the 1st Test on Thursday. Dean Elgar’s elegant 185 combined with South Africa’s precise pace flattened India within three days. When the rest of the batters failed to deal with the deadly pace trio of Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Nandre Burger, Kohli churned up runs with quick singles and boundaries.

He scored 76 off 82 balls during India’s defeat by an innings and 32 runs, which took his tally to 2006 runs in 2023.

He had previously achieved the feat in 2012 (2186 runs), 2014 (2286 runs), 2016 (2595 runs), 2017 (2818 runs), 2018 (2735 runs) and 2019 (2455 runs). No other player, since international cricket was first played in 1877 (as per official record), has achieved the feat.

Coming to day 3 action, India skipper Rohit Sharma’s dreadful run in South Africa, especially against Kagiso Rabada continued. Rabada’s inward angling delivery left Rohit baffled as he failed to read the line, which resulted in the ball crashing into the stumps.

The veteran right-handed batter got removed for an eight-ball duck and this dismissal marked his 7th in 11 innings against Rabada.

‘This Half-century is As Good as a Century’: Shastri, Gavaskar in Awe of ‘Undroppable’ KL Rahul

KL Rahul was not out for 70 at stumps on Day 1

While the majority of Indian batters surrendered to the South African pacers on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test, it was KL Rahul who held the fort. The likes of Kagiso Rabada and Nandre Burger were yelling at the SuperSport Park, collectively picking up 7 Indian wickets, but they couldn’t breach Rahul’s defence the entire day.

Returning to the longest format after 10 months, Rahul was handed a brand new role in the playing XI. Unlike his previous outing against Australia in Delhi in February, the Karnataka batter got shifted to middle-order as he filled in for wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan who opted out of the series citing personal reasons. And the change in batting order did wonders for the team.

A couple of years after scoring a century in Centurion, Rahul was back here with another classic knock. By the end of the day, he had faced 105 deliveries and scored 70 runs with the help of 10 boundaries and a couple of sixes.

Former captains Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri didn’t hold themselves from showering praises on Rahul.

Ravi Shastri amazed

Former head coach Ravi Shastri, who has seen Rahul from close quarters, was amazed to see the way Rahul carried out his innings on the tricky Centurion track.

“He has made batting look easy. When you look at his footwork and the balance, it was pretty amazing. The knock also shows that the number is right for him in Test match cricket. I think he will get a lot of runs for India in the middle order,” Shastri had said on air.

Gavaskar praises the ‘different Rahul’

Batting legend Gavaskar reckoned that this was the version of Rahul that world cricket has been yearning to see for a long time.

“We’ve known about his talent for such a long time, but we are getting to see it in the last eight, nine months, ever since he’s come back from this horrific injury that he had in the IPL, it’s a different Rahul. It’s a Rahul that we have been yearning to see for such a long time and such a delight to see. I said it in commentary as well that this half-century to me, is as good as a century,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

WFI polls: Vinesh Phogat to now return Khel Ratna, Arjuna awards

The world championships medallist announced in a social media address to the prime minister in a fresh protest over the federation (WFI) election

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat during a press conference after Sanjay Singh, an associate of BJP MP and former chief of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, became the new President of WFI, in New Delhi, Thursday, Dec. 21(PTI)

Double World Championships bronze medallist and two-time Olympian Vinesh Phogat announced on Tuesday that she is returning her Khel Ratna and Arjuna awards. The 29-year-old addressed a note to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media platform X to make her decision public.

Phogat’s announcement comes four days after Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Bajrang Punia returned his Padma Shri. On December 21, Rio Games bronze medallist Sakshi Malik had announced her retirement hours after the former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh-backed Sanjay Singh’s panel dominated the WFI polls.

The sports ministry on Sunday suspended WFI citing “blatant disregard for legal and procedural norms” and multiple violations of the federation constitution as well as the National Sports Code. The ministry instructed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to set up an ad-hoc committee to run the federation. IOA, whose ad hoc panel had run the body until the polls, is yet to name the fresh committee.

“I am returning my Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award. Many thanks to the powerful who have put me in this situation,” Phogat wrote. The wrestler was conferred with the Arjuna Award in 2016 and the Khel Ratna — India’s highest sports award for athletes — in 2020.

“Sakshi Malik has quit wrestling and Bajrang Punia has returned his Padma Shri. The entire country knows why the Olympic medallists were forced to do this and the news would have reached you as well. Mr Prime Minister, I am your country’s daughter Vinesh Phogat and I am writing to you to let you know what I have been going through for the past year,” she began.

“I remember that in 2016, when Sakshi Malik returned after winning the Olympic medal, the government made her a brand ambassador of beti bachao beti padhao (save the girl child, educate the girl child) programme. All women wrestlers were very happy. Now that Sakshi has been forced to quit wrestling, my mind goes back to 2016. Do women athletes exist only to feature in government ads? We don’t mind being in those ads because they give an impression that your government is seriously working for the betterment of women. I dreamt of winning an Olympic medal for the country but now that dream is increasingly becoming distant. I wish the upcoming women wrestlers realise their dreams.

“Our lives are nothing like those fancy advertisements. Whatever the women wrestlers have gone through in the past few years will give you an idea of how suffocated we are. By now, the flex boards of your fancy advertisements would have worn out. Sakshi has already retired and the perpetrator has not only spoken of his influence but has resorted to blatant sloganeering. Please take five minutes and listen to his statements and you’ll know what he has done. He has accepted to have made women wrestlers uncomfortable and has done his best to humiliate us. More importantly, he has forced many complainants to step back. That is truly horrifying.

Sports Ministry Asks IOA to Form Temporary Panel to Run WFI – Report

WFI logo (Twitter/@wfi_wrestling)

After suspending the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), the Union Sports Ministry on Sunday asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to form a temporary panel to run the federation. The ministry had earlier suspended the WFI, citing that the newly elected body made a hasty announcement with regards to organizing the U-15 and U-20 nationals, ‘without following due procedure and not giving sufficient notice to wrestlers’ for preparations.’

According to a report by NDTV, the Sports Ministry wrote to the IOA, saying that the temporary committee can manage and control the affairs of the WFI including a selection of athletes

“… Taking note of the compelling current situation arising out of the influence and control of the WFI’s former office bearers, serious concerns have arisen about the governance and integrity of the WFI,” said the letter, as quoted by NDTV, which was signed by Tarun Pareek, undersecretary to the Centre.

“This requires for immediate and stringent corrective measures to uphold the principles of good governance in sports organisations, and thus, now it becomes incumbent on the part of the IOA to make suitable arrangements for the interim period for managing the affairs of WFI so that sportspersons of wrestling discipline do not suffer in any manner and the principle of good governance is the sports body do not get jeopardised,” the letter further read.

The report further stated that the temporary panel formed by the IOA will look after the day-to-day affairs of the WFI, including making entries for the participation of sportspersons in international events and holding sporting events.

Yesterday, the Olympic bronze medallist, Sakshi Malik raised her concern via a post on her handle on X, regarding the upcoming nationals being held in Nandini Nagar, Gonda. She even went on to question the environment the young wrestlers would be competing and mentioned in her post that the area belongs to the former WFI President Brij Bhushan Singh.
