The Indian team’s worries ahead of its opening World Cup game against Australia has been compounded by in-form Shubman Gill’s health issues and the batter is a doubtful starter for Sunday’s match.

Ishan Kishan could be in line to open in case Gill is ruled out.

Gill, India’s most prolific batter in ODIs in recent times, is reportedly down with high fever and will be tested for dengue on Friday before a final call is taken on the matter.

“Shubhman has had high fever since landing in Chennai. His tests are being done. He will have tests on Friday and a call will be taken on his participation in opening game,” a BCCI source privy to team developments told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

It is learnt that Gill is being tested for dengue and in that case, he could well miss a couple of games.

Physical recovery of dengue patients vary and it normally takes around 7-10 days to be up and match ready.

IND vs AUS 3rd ODI: Shubman Gill Rested; Mohd Shami, Shardul Thakur & Hardik Pandya Return Home As Viral Sickness Hits Team India

India, who are leading the three-match series 2-0, will have only 13 players to choose from for the final ODI against Australia in Rajkot on Wednesday.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma on Tuesday said five players, including in-form Shubman Gill, will not be available for selection for the third ODI against Australia, as the squad has been hit by a viral sickness and some players have opted to return home.

India, who are leading the three-match series 2-0, will have only 13 players to choose from for the final ODI.

While Gill is rested, Axar Patel is recuperating at NCA from the left quadricep injury that he suffered during the Asia Cup.

3 players return home

Pacers Mohammed Shami and Shardul Thakur, who played the first two ODIs against the Aussies, and Hardik Pandya, who is yet to play in this series, have opted to go back to their respective homes.

“We have got a lot of players who are sick and not available, a lot of players have personal problems so they have gone home and a few of the guys have been rested as well.

“We have got 13 players at this point in time,” said Rohit during the pre-match press meet.

“Obviously, Gill has been rested, Shami, Hardik and Shardul have all gone home again, personal things. Axar, obviously, is not available for this game,” Rohit said.

Viral sickness hits Team India

Rohit said the viral sickness going around the group too has added to the uncertainty.

“There is a bit of viral going around in the team as well. So, there is a lot of uncertainty in the team at this point in time which we cannot help,” he added.

Shubman Gill set a massive world record against Bangladesh

India’s six-run defeat to Bangladesh in the 2023 Asia Cup on Friday (September 15) was not short of its positives, as star opener

Through the course of his incredible knock, which almost single-handedly kept the Men in Blue alive in the game as wickets kept falling around him, Gill achieved a massive world record. Gill now has more runs than any batter in the history of ODI cricket after 32 innings in the format.

The 24-year-old broke Hashim Amla’s long-standing record. The legendary South African batter had a total of 1650 runs after 32 innings, a mark Gill was able to surpass after playing a knock of 121 in 133 balls. Coming into the game, Gill had a total of 1590 runs in 31 innings and missed Amla’s record of the most runs after 30 and 31 innings, respectively.

Asia Cup 2023: Rohit, Gill Gun Down 145 After Jadeja Heroics As India Crush Nepal To Reach Super Fours

IND vs NEP, Asia Cup 2023: India (147/0) Beat Nepal (230) By 10 Wickets (Via DLS) To Reach Super Fours. Rohit Sharma (74*), Shubhman Gill (67*), Ravindra Jadeja (3/40).

BCCI

In a remarkable display of cricket prowess, India secured a coveted spot in the Asia Cup Super Four by crushing Nepal with a resounding 10-wicket victory.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill emerged as the stars of the match, crafting unbeaten fifties to ensure India’s triumph.

Despite facing frequent rain interruptions, Nepal managed to post a commendable total of 230 after being asked to bat first. The match’s challenging conditions made it all the more impressive.

India, facing a revised target of 145 runs from 23 overs due to the DLS calculations, comfortably achieved victory thanks to Rohit Sharma (74 not out off 59 balls) and Shubman Gill (67 not out off 62 balls). Their powerful performance was instrumental in India’s success.

With this victory, India concluded their Group A matches with three points, securing their place in the Super Four. Pakistan had already secured a spot in the Super Four with three points as well.

Nepal’s pacers, KC Karan and Sompal Kami, displayed excellent pace, initially causing trouble for Indian openers Rohit and Gill.

Nepal had its moments in the match, both with the ball and bat, but ultimately bowed out of the Asia Cup without earning any points.

Bowling Challenges for India

While India’s victory was significant, their bowling performance against Nepal left room for improvement. The Indian bowlers struggled against Nepal, who were expected to be an easier opponent. Fielding was also a concern, with several dropped catches and misfields.

Nepal’s Aasif Sheikh (58 off 97 balls), Kushal Bhurtel (38 off 25 balls), and Sompal Kami (48 off 55 balls) provided a tough challenge to the Indian attack.

Despite being bundled out for just 104 by Pakistan in their previous match, Nepal showed their resilience and determination in this encounter.

Nepal got off to a flying start, reaching 65 for 1 in the first 10 overs, with Kushal Bhurtel playing a pivotal role. However, India would rue the missed opportunities as they gave Bhurtel two reprieves early in his innings.

IND vs WI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill Hammer Fifties As India Brush Aside West Indies By 9 Wickets In 4th T20I; Level Series 2-2

Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave a glittering manifestation of their talent as India humbled West Indies by nine wickets in the fourth T20 International in Lauderhill, United States of America on Saturday.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill stitched opening stand of 165 runs.

Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave a glittering manifestation of their talent as India humbled West Indies by nine wickets in the fourth T20 International in Lauderhill, United States of America on Saturday. India hunted down 179 with full three overs to spare, and the victory helped them to level the five-match series 2-2. The deciding fifth T20I will be played on Sunday. Coming into this match, India needed some runs from their openers and the two young men did precisely that.

Gill (77 off 47 balls) and Jaiswal (84 not out off 51 balls) slipped into overdrive from ball one and they seldom downshifted either. They made 165 runs together and it was India’s best stand for the opening wicket in this series so far.

There were apprehensions of pitch getting slowed down in the second half of the match, as it often happened in the past. But the centre square that was recently refurbished using the Mississippi soil stayed true for the whole course of the match.

Gill and Jaiswal used the wicket’s friendly nature to the hilt as 66 runs cascaded in the Power Play segment. The eight fours and three sixes they smoked during that phase, underscored Indian batters’ dominance.

Incidentally, all three sixes took birth off Gill’s punishing bat.

Gill was the first to stroll past the fifty-run mark, cutting Rovman Powell past the point fielder for a couple.

Jaiswal soon joined his partner on that landmark point, and it was achieved in an even more eye-popping fashion.

Powell tried to go wide of off-stump but the left-hander moved across and thumped the ball through wide square leg for a boundary, and celebrated his maiden T20I fifty with unmasked glee.

In the process of making 165, Gill and Jaiswal equalled the record for the second highest opening alliance for India in T20Is. They are now tied with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul who made 165 against Sri Lanka at Indore in Sri Lanka in 2017.

“Got A Bit Of Attitude…”: Ricky Ponting On Why Shubman Gill Would Be Key For India In WTC Final

Shubman Gill was in stunning form during IPL 2023 as he won the Orange Cap. He will be hoping to win his first major trophy in Indian colours next week.

Ricky Ponting feels Shubman Gill will play an important role in the WTC final.

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 done and dusted, the focus now shifts towards the longest format of the game as India take on Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. With KL Rahul out injured, the responsibility will be on Shubman Gill to partner Rohit Sharma at the top of the order. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting feels Gill has a bit of class and swagger in his stroke making, adding that the 23-year-old will play an important role in the WTC final.

“He looks like a terrific young guy. He’s got that bit of attitude about him as well. He’s got a bit of swagger. He has some serious class. That sort of front foot pull shot that he plays against the fast bowlers will be a shot that he’ll probably need against this Australian attack,” Ponting said on ICC Review.

Gill was in stunning form during IPL 2023 as he won the Orange Cap. However, he could not take defending champions Gujarat Titans to their second successive title but he will be hoping to win his first major trophy in Indian colours next week.

Ponting also hailed India’s Mohammed Shami, saying that the veteran pacer can prove to be dangerous, something which the Australians have already acknowledged.
