Drone attack kills 80 and wounds 240 at a packed Syrian military graduation ceremony, official says

A drone attack hit a crowded military graduation ceremony Thursday in the Syrian city of Homs, killing 80 people and wounding 240, the health minister said, in one of the deadliest recent attacks on an army that’s been fighting a civil war for more than a decade.

The strike killed civilians, including six children, as well as military personnel, and there were concerns the death toll could rise as many of the wounded were in serious condition, Health Minister Hassan al-Ghabash said.

Syria’s military said in an earlier statement that drones laden with explosives targeted the ceremony packed with young officers and their families as it was wrapping up. Without naming any particular group, the military accused insurgents “backed by known international forces” of the attack and said “it will respond with full force and decisiveness to these terrorist organizations, wherever they exist.”

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack as Syria endures its 13th year of conflict.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “expressed deep concern” about the drone attack in Homs as well as reports of retaliatory shelling in northwest Syria, his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said. Guterres condemned all violence and called for a nationwide cease-fire, the spokesperson added.

The military did not provide any casualty numbers, but Syria’s state television said the government announced a three-day state of mourning starting Friday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, and the pro-government Sham FM radio station reported the strikes earlier.

Syria’s crisis started with peaceful protests against President Bashar Assad’s government in March 2011 but quickly morphed into a full-blown civil war after the government’s brutal crackdown on the protesters. The tide turned in Assad’s favor against rebel groups in 2015, when Russia provided key military backing to Syria, as well as Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

So far, the war has killed half a million people, wounded hundreds of thousands and destroyed many parts of the country. It has displaced half of Syria’s prewar population of 23 million, including more than 5 million who are refugees outside Syria.

Although most Arab governments have restored ties with the government in Damascus, Syria remains divided, with a northwest enclave under the control of al-Qaida-linked militants from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group and Turkish-backed opposition fighters. The country’s northeast is under control of U.S.-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.

The city of Homs is deep in government-held territory, far from front lines where government and rebel forces routinely skirmish.

After the drone attack, Syrian government forces shelled villages in Idlib province, in the northwest. At least 10 civilians were wounded in the towns of Al-Nayrab and Sarmin east of Idlib city, according to opposition-held northwestern Syria’s civil defense organization known as the White Helmets. Government forces continue to shell other areas in the enclave.

The Syrian army shelled another village in the region earlier Thursday before the drone attack over Homs, killing at least five civilians, activists and emergency workers said. The shelling hit a family house on the outskirts of the the village of Kafr Nouran in western Aleppo province, according to the White Helmets.

A woman and four of her children were killed, according to the Observatory. Nine other members of the family were wounded, it said.

Hand grenade fragments found in bodies of victims after Yevgeny Prigozhin plane crash, Vladimir Putin says

Vladimir Putin has suggested the plane crash that reportedly killed his former ally Yevgeny Prigozhin was caused by hand grenades – and not by a missile attack.

Putin says that hand grenade fragments were found in the bodies of victims of Wagner chief’s plane crash

Hand grenade fragments were found in the bodies of victims of a plane crash that killed former Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said.

Mr Prigozhin was reportedly among 10 people killed in a plane crash north of Moscow on 23 August, two months to the day after he led a failed mutiny against top Russian officials.

The aborted rebellion, during which he demanded the ousting of the defence minister, Sergei Shoigu, was the biggest challenge to President Putin’s rule since he rose to power in 1999.

But Mr Putin appeared to dismiss Western assessments the plane had been shot down, claiming there was “no external impact” and this “is already an established fact”.

“Fragments of hand grenades were found in the bodies of those killed in the crash,” he told a meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi.

He did not give any details around how a grenade could explode in the plane – but he said investigators should have tested the bodies for alcohol and drugs, given cocaine has been found at Wagner offices before.

“In my opinion, such an examination should have been carried out but it was not,” he added.

Mr Putin said the FSB security service had found 10 billion roubles (£82.3m) in cash and 5kg of cocaine in searches of Wagner’s offices in St Petersburg.

The investigators have not publicly commented on the case, but Russia said it confirmed Mr Prigozhin’s death in the crash following genetic tests – without revealing the cause.

He was buried privately in a “farewell ceremony” in a St Petersburg cemetery in August, according to his press team.

What happened to the plane?

The private Embraer Legacy aircraft was travelling from Moscow to St Petersburg when it crashed, with Russia reporting there were no survivors.

Russian state-owned TASS news agency said seven passengers and three crew were on board the Embraer aircraft and were all killed.

A Telegram channel affiliated with the Wagner Group said Mr Prigozhin was killed in the plane crash. It called him a hero and a patriot who had died at the hands of unidentified people described as “traitors to Russia”.

The plane came down near the village of Kuzhenkino Tver.

Suicide bombings at two mosques in Pakistan kill at least 57

Suicide bombings ripped through two mosques in Pakistan on Friday, killing at least 57 people, including seven children, as believers marked the birthday of the Prophet Mohammad, police and health officials said.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks, from which the death toll could climb, with many people seriously injured and others having been trapped beneath the wreckage.

In the first blast, in Mastung in the southwestern province of Balochistan, the bomber detonated his explosives near a police vehicle where people were gathering for a procession, senior police official Munir Ahmed said.

At least 52 people were killed, according to district health official Abdul Rasheed, including the children who were aged nine to 11. At least 58 people were injured.

“The injured were crying for help,” witness Munir Ahmed Shahwani said.

“I saw at least 25 bodies on the spot, which included small children,” he said, adding people were looking for their loved ones.

A deputy superintendent of police was among those killed as he oversaw security arrangements in the area, police said.

“Nawaz Gishkori tried to stop the suicide bomber, but he blew himself up after getting close to him,” Javed Lehri, a senior police officer said.

The gathering, in which people were carrying flags and banners, was at a mosque belonging to the Barelvi sect, generally considered more moderate than hardline Islamic sects such as Salafism.

Some hardline sects consider veneration of the Prophet Mohammad as heresy.

The second attack, in neighbouring Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, killed five people at a mosque, according to rescue officials. The roof collapsed, broadcaster Geo News said, trapping about 30 to 40 people under the rubble.

The attack involved two explosions, one of which was at the mosque gate and the other in the compound, an official said.

A surge in militant attacks in Pakistan’s western provinces has cast a shadow on election preparations and public campaigning in the run-up to January’s national election, but until now the attacks had mostly targeted security forces.

Both provinces border Afghanistan and have suffered attacks in recent years by Islamist militants aiming to overthrow Pakistan’s government and install their own brand of strict Islamic law.

As many as 11 labourers were killed and two sustained injured in a bomb blast in the Gulmir Kot area in Pakistan’s North Waziristan, ARY News reported on Saturday.

The police spokesperson said that the bomb exploded in a van in North Waziristan.

Further details are awaited in the matter.

Notably, this attack comes weeks after the massive suicide blast in Bajaur, in which at least 63 people including 23 children were killed and over 200 people sustained injuries.

The responsibility for the blast was claimed by the Islamic State group, according to Al Jazeera.

The bombing targeted an election rally in Pakistan’s border district of Bajaur.

A bomber detonated an explosives-packed vest near the platform as some 400 members of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) party, a significant government coalition partner led by hardline politician Fazlur Rehman, awaited the start of the speeches.

The suicide bomber detonated explosives when JUI-F members and supporters gathered in the town of Khar, near the border with Afghanistan. The convention started at 2 pm, and the explosion happened at 4:10 pm, according to the officials.

Pakistan Blast: Islamic State Claims Responsibility For Suicide Bombing That Killed 54

Authorities had already indicated that the jihadist group IS in Khorasan province (ISKP) was behind the attack, which was confirmed by the group who published a photographer of the suicide bomber. The Islamic State said the attacker detonated an explosive vest.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing that killed as many as 54 people during a rally in Bajaur’s Khar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. The blast took place when a huge crowd had gathered for a rally of the conservative Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl party.

Authorities had already indicated that the jihadist group IS in Khorasan province (ISKP) was behind the attack, which was confirmed by the group who published a photographer of the suicide bomber. The Islamic State said the attacker detonated an explosive vest, and that the bombing in the northwestern town of Bajaur was part of the group’s continuing war against forms of democracy it deems to be against Islam.

The militant group issued a statement on its Telegram channel: “The attack comes in the natural context of the ongoing war waged by the Islamic State against ‘democracy’ as a regime hostile to true Islam and in conflict with its divine law,” the group’s Amaq agency said on Telegram. The local chapter of the IS-Khorasan group has in the past targeted JUI-F rallies and leaders.

The Pakistan Taliban, known as the TTP, had quickly distanced themselves from the bombing, with their spokesperson saying that “such crimes cannot be justified in any way”.

Horrific Visuals Surface

Visuals from the blast site started to surface soon after the incident and showed massive destruction and heart-wrenching scenes. One of the videos showed the exact moment when the explosion happened. The video shows a large gathering listing to an address when suddenly everything begins to shake. One can hear screams and cries.

The Honduran government announced curfews on Sunday in two northern cities after more than 20 people were killed overnight in separate attacks amid escalating violence in the country.

Heavily armed men opened fire on Saturday night in a billiards hall in a neighborhood in the northern manufacturing city of Choloma, killing 13 people and seriously wounding another, police press person Edgardo Barahona told Reuters.

He added at least 11 other murders had taken place on Saturday in separate episodes across the northern Valle de Sula zone, including in the industrial city of San Pedro Sulay.

President Xiomara Castro announced a 15-day curfew in Choloma between 9 pm and 4 am, effective immediately, and another in San Pedro Sula, effective July 4.

“Multiple operations, raids, captures and checkpoints are initiated,” Castro said via Twitter.

There has been a partial state of emergency in parts of Honduras since December in a bid to confront violent gangs and turf wars.

Security Minister Gustavo Sanchez announced later on Sunday that the government would be sending a proposal to Congress to “classify members of a criminal structure, maras or gangs as terrorists” in the coming days.

Designated ‘terrorist’ by India, KCF chief Paramjit Singh Panjwar shot dead in Lahore

Paramjit Singh Panjwar. Pic credit- Twitter

Wanted Khalistani terrorist Paramjit Singh Panjwar was on Saturday shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Lahore, the provincial capital of Pakistan’s Punjab province, the police said.

Panjwar (63) was heading the Khalistan Commando Force-Panjwar group and was designated as a terrorist by India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in July 2020. “The gunmen shot Panjwar in his head and he was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital,” a Pakistani police officer said, adding his guard was also injured and succumbed later.

Panjwar along with his guard was walking in a park at Sun Flower Housing Society in Jauhar town of Lahore where he was residing when the two assailants opened fire at them and fled on a motorcycle, the officer said. Pakistan’s intelligence agencies, including the ISI, Military Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), cordoned off the area and launched an investigation. The killing is the latest instance of terror kingpins being targeted outside India. In February, Bashir Ahmad Peer, a self-styled commander of the terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Pakistan’s Rawalpindi.

In the same month, former commander of Pakistan-based terror outfit Al Badr, Syed Khalid Raza, was killed in a similar manner outside his residence in Karachi while Kashmir-born terrorist, Aijaz Ahmad Ahanger, alias Abu Usman Al-Kashmiri, who had joined the Islamic State (IS), was reportedly killed in February in Kunar province of Afghanistan.

On the deadly attack on Saturday, an eyewitness told the CTD that Panjwar was in the park around 6 am when a gunman came close to them and opened fire. “After the firing, the assailant rushed to the gate of the society and fled along with his accomplice who was waiting for him outside,” he said. A source said the assailants had conducted a recce for a week.

Panjwar had joined the KCF in 1986. In 1986, the KCF was headed by Sukhdev Singh, alias Sukha Shapai, who was then serving as a police constable in Punjab (India). In 1989, Shapai was killed in a police encounter at Tanda in Hoshiarpur and thereafter, Kanwarjit Singh of Sultanwind in Amritsar became the KCF chief while Paramjit Singh Panjwar became its deputy chief. After Kanwarjit’s death, Panjwar became the KCF chief. Before he escaped to Pakistan in 1995-96, Panjwar was involved in a number of killings in Punjab, according to official sources. Though he was inactive for the last couple of years, Panjwar had been operating from Lahore and was involved in arranging arms training for youths in Pakistan. He was engaged in supplying arms and ammunition and subsequent infiltration into India for targeting VIPs and economic installations.

“Panjwar’s complicity in promoting drug trade and fake Indian currency notes (FICN) operation in Punjab are well documented. Efforts are being made by his organisation KCF to reactive former militants, sleeper cells and also those on bail and it has been in favour of forming a nexus with other forces hostile to India,” the ministry had said.

Taliban kill Islamic State leader who masterminded Kabul airport bombing that left 13 US service members dead

The blast outside the airport in 2021 took place as thousands of Afghans tried to board crowded flights to flee the country during the chaotic US-led withdrawal.

The Tailban have killed an Islamic State group leader who masterminded the Kabul airport suicide bombing that left 13 US service members dead.

The US military informed the families of the 11 marines, the sailor and the soldier killed in the blast during the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

About 170 Afghans were also killed in the bombing outside Hamid Karzai International Airport on 26 August 2021.

Family members of the US personnel shared the information in a private messaging chat group, according to one marine’s mother.

The account from the families was confirmed by US officials, who spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

The IS leader, whose identity has not yet been released, was killed in southern Afghanistan in early April.

The Taliban were conducting a series of operations against the Islamic State group, according to one of the officials.

At the time, the Taliban were not aware of the identity of the person they killed, the official added.

‘It’s not going to bring Taylor back’

The attack at Abbey Gate took place as thousands of Afghans tried to board crowded flights to flee the country after the Taliban’s takeover.

At the time, the UK, the US and other nations were carrying out the evacuation of thousands of citizens.

Darin Hoover, the father of staff sergeant Darin Taylor Hoover who died in the attack, said the killing of the unidentified Islamic State group leader does nothing to help them.

He said: “Whatever happens, it’s not going to bring Taylor back and I understand that.

“About the only thing his mom and I can do now is be an advocate for him. All we want is the truth. And we’re not getting it. That’s the frustrating part.”

His son was among service members who were screening thousands of Afghans trying to board one of the flights out of the country.

Mr Hoover said he and his son’s mother, Kelly Henson, have spent the past year and a half grieving the death of the 31-year-old and praying for accountability from Joe Biden’s administration for the handling of the withdrawal.

Explosions at Pakistani counter-terrorism ammunition store kill at least 13

Two explosions in a counter-terrorism ammunition depot in northwest Pakistan killed at least 13 people and wounded over 50 on Monday, police said.

Provincial police chief Akhtar Hayat said the explosions rocked the counter-terrorism office in northwestern Swat valley, which was previously long controlled by Islamist militants before they were flushed out in a military operation in 2009.

His spokesman said in a statement issued later that ammunition caught fire, “most probably due to an electric short-circuit. No evidence of an attack from outside has been established so far.”

Pakistani police and military have got a significant presence of their counter-terrorism staff in the valley, which has been prone to the insurgency.

The militants also shot at and wounded Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai in 2012 in the scenic valley, the birthplace of Mullah Fazlullah, the former chief of the Pakistani Taliban, who was killed in an air strike in neighbouring Afghanistan in 2018.

Other aspects of the explosions are being investigated, the spokesman said.

Most of those killed in the blasts were police counter-terrorism officers, Hayat said, adding that a woman and her child who were passing by the building were also killed.

At least 60 killed ‘by men wearing army uniforms’ in northern Burkina Faso

The massacre happened in an area overrun by Islamist groups – but comes as the government investigates claims of human rights abuses by its own armed forces.

At least 60 civilians have been killed by men wearing army uniforms in northern Burkina Faso, officials say.

The attack took place on Friday in a village in Barga, in Yatenga province, close to the border with Mali.

Burkina Faso‘s prosecutor Lamine Kabore did not provide details about Friday’s attack but said those injured were being treated in hospital.

“My office was alerted about the seriousness of some of the facts. I therefore gave instructions to the investigation unit to carry out investigations in order to illuminate the said facts and hear all the people who are involved,” he said.

The killings took place in an area overrun by Islamist groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State.

The groups have been blamed for multiple attacks which have left thousands dead and displaced an estimated two million people over six years.

Earlier this month, militants were accused of killing at least 44 people in the north-eastern province of Seno.

However, members of Burkina Faso’s military have also been accused of killing civilians in the country, where the government is said to control less than 50% of the nation’s territory.

News of the massacre comes amid growing concern about violence elsewhere in Africa, in Sudan.

UK Khalistan protest: EAM Jaishankar says India won’t accept differential standards of security

He also accused the UK of not meeting the obligation of providing security to the diplomats of the Mission, which is expected of a country where a high commission or a consulate is located.

Taking a strong view of pro-Khalistan supporters pulling down the Indian tricolour at the Indian High Commission in the United Kingdom, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said India would not accept differential standards of security.

He also accused the UK of not meeting the obligation of providing security to the diplomats of the Mission, which is expected of a country where a high commission or a consulate is located.

“On the flag and the security of the high commission, in this particular case in the UK – whenever any country sends an embassy anywhere abroad, it is the obligation of the receiving country to provide security for a diplomat to do his work.

“It is the obligation of the receiving country to ensure the embassy or the high commission or the consulate and their premises are respected. These obligations were not met,” Jaishankar said at an event organised here by Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya.

Replying to a question on the issue of threat to the diplomats and the Indian diaspora in the UK, the Minister said that on the day the vandals appeared before the high commission, the security at the high commission failed to meet expected standards.

“Many countries are very casual about it (security). They have a very different view about their own security and a different view about other people’s security, but I can tell you as a foreign minister that we are not going to accept this kind of differential standards,” the EAM said.
