On ‘Stealing’ Virat Kohli’s No. 3 Spot, Shreyas Iyer’s Mic Drop Statement

India’s batting is shaping up well as they won the match despite the absence of senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, which also left them with a problem of plenty.

Shreyas Iyer scored a century against Australia in 2nd ODI

After slamming a century to set up India’s 99-run win in the second ODI against Australia, comeback man Shreyas Iyer on Sunday opened up about his long-injury lay-off, saying he was in a “lonely space” during that rollercoaster phase in his career. Iyer, who had to undergo a back surgery and was out of action for six months, slammed 105 off 90 balls to take India to a massive 399 for 5 against Australia here, which eventually led the hosts to a series sealing victory.

“It was a rollercoaster ride. I’ve been working so hard the last few months, and I was in a lonely space,” Iyer, who was adjudged the player of the match, said at the post-match presentation.

The 28-year-old returned to the team at the Asia Cup but a back spasm in the middle of the tournament meant he only got to bat only once over the course of two weeks.

“Excited to be back and I am enjoying the atmosphere in the dressing room. I was seeing matches on TV and wanted to be out there.

“I had belief in myself. I knew what I was aiming for and glad I was able to execute my plans today,” he added.

Talking about his strategy against the Aussies, Iyer said: “My plan was to play in the V and not complicate things. I was batting brilliantly in the nets. I’m happy to bat in any position. Whatever the team requires. Virat (Kohli) is one of the greats, there’s no chance of stealing that (number 3) spot from him. I just need to keep scoring wherever (at any position) I bat.”

The stand-in skipper KL Rahul said he was a bit surprised to see the wicket spin in the second half.

“When I saw the wicket in the morning, I didn’t think it would spin so much. Putting 400 on the board gives you confidence,” he said.

India’s batting is shaping up well as they won the match despite the absence of senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, which also left them with a problem of plenty.

“When My Name Was Not There…”: ‘Shocked’ Shikhar Dhawan Breaks Silence On Indian Cricket Team Snub For Asian Games

Senior India batter Shikhar Dhawan was a “bit shocked” at his exclusion from India’s Asian Games squad

Senior India batter Shikhar Dhawan was a “bit shocked” at his exclusion from India’s Asian Games squad but remains determined to make a national comeback in the near future. With the first-choice players busy with preparation for the ODI World Cup at home, the BCCI named a squad full of youngsters for the Hangzhou Asian Games in September-October.

The 37-year-old left-hander was tipped to lead the second-string India team in China, a role he performed until 10 months ago, but the selectors did not pick him and named Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain.

“When my name was not there (for Asian Games), I was a bit shocked. But, then, I was like they have a different thought process, you just have to accept it. Happy that Rutu (Gaikwad) will lead the side. All the young boys are there, I am sure they will do well,” Dhawan told PTI on Thursday.

With Shubman Gill joining Rohit Sharma at the top, it seems the Indian team has moved on from Dhawan, who had become a one-format player until he was dropped from the ODI side following the Bangladesh tour in December 2022.

The ever-optimistic Dhawan, who has been among India’s leading ODI batters over the past decade, said he can’t foresee what is in store for him but will be ready if an opportunity knocks on the door.

“I will be ready, of course (for the comeback). That is why I keep myself fit (so whenever I get a chance I am ready). There is always a chance whether it is one percent or 20 percent.

“I still enjoy training and I still enjoy the game, these are the things in my control. Whatever decision is made, I respect that,” said the southpaw who remains a centrally-contracted cricketer and spends a lot of time at the National Cricket Academy.

After achieving the landmark and 7,000 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and becoming the first player ever to do so, Star India and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter Virat Kohli said that it is just another milestone in his mission of doing what he is trying to do for his team, that is to win matches. He also said it felt special to have his childhood coach and family watch him play at the ground where it all started for him as a cricketer during this record-breaking day.

With the help of half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Mahipal Lomror, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) posted 181/4 at the end of 20 overs in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday.

“7000 runs is just another milestone during the journey of what I am trying to do for my team. It is a nice number when you try to do something for your team,” Virat said after the innings.

“(On his childhood coach watching from the stands): it is a special moment, Anushka (Sharma) is here, my family is here, my coach is here. I was honoured with getting a pavilion named after me. I started my journey here and started playing for Delhi here. I never imagined all these things would come there and there is gratitude for all this. I want to put my head down and continue to work hard,” added Kohli.

On having his family in the stadium, Virat said, “I have said it from day one that having Anushka around has been special for me. Having her around and now our daughter as well. It makes make feel like normalcy is around, and cricket is a part of life but that is the real deal. It is special when she comes to watch. My brother and other family members are here as well, so it is special.
