Manjari Fadnnis says casting happen on the basis of Instagram followers; ‘Don’t put that pressure on actors’

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na actor Manjari Fadnnis says casting happen on the basis of Instagram followers. The actress further added that she dislikes this trend.

We remember actress Manjari Fadnnis as Jai’s girlfriend Meghna Pariyar in Abbas Tyrewala’s romantic comedy film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na released in 2008. Since then, the Indian actress has worked in several films and web series. She was seen in the crime thriller show Miya Biwi Aur Murder alongside Rajeev Khandelwal. Very recently, the action-thriller TV series The Freelancer was dropped in which Manjari played a prominent role.

Manjari Fadnnis says she is against actors getting roles based on their Instagram followers

The actress, who isn’t proactive on social media, says that currently in the Hindi film industry, actors get roles based on the number of followers they have on Instagram. She said, “I mean there are castings happening on the basis of how many followers you have on Instagram. I find that absurd, and annoying and I hate it when people tell me ‘Manjari you should be more active on Instagram’. I love to put things on Instagram when I feel like, it’s not a compulsion for me, I don’t want it to become like a job.”

She further added that she hates this trend and the pressure it puts on actors to be influencers. Sharing why she dislikes it, the Mumbai Salsa fame said, “It is the importance that the industry and everybody in the industry is giving to the number of followers on Instagram. I don’t like this trend, the pressure everyone puts on actors to be influencers. We are influencers by default. And being an influencer is not my profession.”

She further added that her profession is acting and she doesn’t want to spend her time and energy creating content for Instagram. “I would rather do fun creative things because I enjoy it and not because I have to put it on Instagram and people have to like it.”

Friday Night Plan Review: Babil Khan Shines In This Heartwarming Tale Of Self-Discovery

Friday Night Plan marks Babil Khan’s second film outing after Qala.

In a world where we are constantly worried about the fear of uncertainty irrespective of our age, and especially in our early 20s, Babil Khan’s Friday Night Plan brings in the right sense of reassurance to our minds, allowing us to let things loose and enjoy the ride. The film takes you back to the good old days of having school crushes, hilarious mishaps, and awkward encounters, only to laugh about it and cherish them later. But having said that, the storyline offers much more than the nuances of teen drama.

The film backed by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment, helmed by Vatsal Neelakantan stars an ensemble cast of young actors including Babil Khan, Adhya Anand, Medha Rana, Amrith Jayan, and Aditya Jain, while veteran actress Juhi Chawla has an extended cameo appearance.

The movie revolves around two brothers, who have completely contrasting approaches towards life and handling things. It presents how they grow closer and understand each other better when they are thrown off in circumstances, they never saw coming.

While Sidharth (Babil Khan) has to be the responsible, nerdy big brother, his younger sibling Aditya (Amrith Jayan) takes things one hour at a time. However, things change for the better or worse when Sidharth becomes the talk of the school and is forced to tag along to a party with ‘cool’ and ‘popular’ kids. However, the story gets even funnier and edgier when Sidharth, along with his brother, take risks and land in trouble on that one Friday Night when their mom (Juhi Chawla) is away from town for work.

The 1 hour 50 minute run time is perfectly balanced. While the first half quickly establishes the character dynamics, the second half of the film focuses more on their growths, and the circumstances responsible for the same. Along with this, the songs in the film add the much-needed freshness of a feel-good romance.

Needless to say, the biggest asset of Friday Night Plan is undoubtedly its originality. Vatsal Neelakantan takes you on a nostalgic ride, of your early teens and twenties. He also takes you back to the 2000s Bollywood, where films like Wake Up Sid, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, and Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa tug our hearts.

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court, while refusing to stay the release of Ayushmann Khurrana starrer “Dream Girl 2”, has said that films should not be prevented from release at the eleventh hour.

The order was passed by Justice Riyaz Chagla on August 22 while hearing a suit filed by one Ashim Bagchi who claimed the story of the film was similar to a script he had registered with the Film Screen Writers Association in May 2007. Bagchi sought a stay on the release of the film pending hearing of his suit.

However, the HC noted that the suit and application seeking injunction order on the film’s release was filed only on August 18 and the respondents have not had an opportunity to respond to it.

“It is well settled that at the eleventh hour films should not be prevented from their release. An opportunity is required to be given to the Respondent / Defendant to file their reply to the interim application,” the HC said.

HC asked crew to submit their affidavits in response to suit

The court has asked the respondents – Balaji Telefilms Ltd; the company’s directors Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor; writers of the film Raaj Shaandilyaa of Think Ink Picturez Ltd; and Naresh Kathooria – to file their affidavits responding to the suit.

Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ Surpasses $700 Million Globally

©Universal/Courtesy Everett Collection

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” has surpassed $700 million at the global box office, becoming the fourth-highest grossing movie of the year.

After five weeks of release, the R-rated historical drama has generated $718 million at the worldwide box office, including $285 million in North America and $437 million internationally.

The film has outperformed “Fast X” ($704 million) and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($686 million) and trails behind “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($1.35 billion), Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” ($1.279 billion) and Marvel’s “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” ($845 million).

Those ticket sales also rank as Nolan’s fourth-biggest movie of all time, passing 2014’s “Interstellar” ($715 million) and standing behind “The Dark Knight” ($1.006 billion), “The Dark Knight Rises” ($1.08 billion) and “Inception” ($837 million). It’s also the director’s highest-grossing release in 50 overseas markets, including Germany, India, Brazil and Saudi Arabia.

In North America, “Oppenheimer” has remained in the top three for more than a month. It’s the highest-grossing R-rated film of the year, ahead of “John Wick: Chapter 4” ($187 million), and it’s the sixth-biggest release of 2023 after Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” ($297 million).

“Oppenheimer” has been a particularly huge draw in Imax with $146.4 million from the premium format’s screens. It’s the fifth-highest grossing Imax movie ever — and the top four were $2 billion blockbusters: “Avatar” and its sequel “The Way of Water,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Avengers: Endgame.”

Nolan adapted “Oppenheimer” from the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus.” Cillian Murphy stars as the theoretical physicist who led the development of the atomic bomb. The rest of the ensemble cast includes Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh and Alden Ehrenreich.

Harry Belafonte, Singer, Actor, Producer and Activist, Dies at 96

He made calypso music a phenomenon with “Day-O,” received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and a Lifetime Achievement Grammy and batted injustice around the world.

Harry Belafonte, the actor, producer, singer and activist who made calypso music a national phenomenon with “Day-O” (The Banana Boat Song) and used his considerable stardom to draw attention to Martin Luther King Jr., civil rights issues and injustices around the world, has died. He was 96.

Belafonte, recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2014, died Tuesday of congestive heart failure at his Manhattan home on the Upper West Side with his wife, Pamela, by his side, longtime spokesman Ken Sunshine told The Hollywood Reporter.

A master at blending pop, jazz and traditional West Indian rhythms, the Caribbean-American Belafonte released more than 30 albums during his career and received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy from the Recording Academy in 2000.

Calypso, which featured “Day-O” and another hit, “Jamaica Farewell,” topped the Billboard pop album list for an incredible 31 weeks in 1956 and is credited as the first LP to sell 1 million copies. It was one of three albums he had that year that made it into the top 3.

On the big screen in the late 1950s, Belafonte was a matinee idol and rarely seen non-white sex symbol.

In the Darryl F. Zanuck-produced Island in the Sun (1957), his politician character is romantically pursued by a rich white woman (Joan Fontaine), a storyline that created much controversy (and big box office) at the time.

And in two films released in 1959, he played a bank robber opposite a racist partner (Robert Ryan) in Robert Wise’s Odds Against Tomorrow and survived a nuclear disaster — and then battled Mel Ferrer over Swedish actress Inger Stevens — in The World, the Flesh and the Devil. Both movies were financed by his own company, HarBel Productions.

Following an acclaimed Carnegie Hall two-night stand in April 1959, Belafonte won an Emmy for his Revlon Revue TV special, Tonight With Belafonte.

Belafonte — who found inspiration in such figures as Eleanor Roosevelt and Paul Robeson — helped round up celebrities for the Freedom March on Washington in 1963, when King delivered his historic “I Have a Dream” speech. Later, he participated in the Alabama march from Selma to Montgomery (archive footage of him appears in the 2014 film Selma), performed in Paris and Stockholm for the first European-sponsored benefit concerts on behalf of King and sat alongside his widow at MLK’s funeral.

Belafonte was a driving force behind the nonprofit organization USA for Africa, which was launched to stamp out famine and spawned the mega-selling single “We Are the World,” which brought together such artists as Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Ray Charles. A year later, he masterminded the 1986 human-chain campaign Hands Across America, which benefited U.S. poor.

A Kennedy Center honoree in 1989, Belafonte also was active in efforts to end apartheid in South Africa and to release Nelson Mandela.

“Tonight is no casual encounter for me,” Belafonte said during his Hersholdt acceptance speech. “Along with the trophy of honor, there is another layer that gives this journey this kind of wonderful Hollywood ending. To be rewarded by my peers for my work for human rights and civil rights and for peace — well, let me put this way: It powerfully mutes the enemy’s thunder.”

Harold George Belafonte Jr. was born in the New York on March 1, 1927. While a child, his mother, a cleaning lady, moved the family in 1936 from Harlem to her native Jamaica, where they lived for five years. After returning to New York, he attended George Washington High School but dropped out and enlisted in the U.S. Navy.

After he was discharged, Belafonte found work as a janitor’s assistant but dreamed of becoming an entertainer. For repairing a tenant’s apartment, he received two free tickets to the American Negro Theatre (“The universe opened up for me,” he said), was accepted there and wound up winning the lead in the Sean O’Casey play Juno and the Paycock.

Belafonte later enrolled in The Actors Studio and Erwin Piscator’s Dramatic Workshop at the New School for Social Research, where his fellow students included Tony Curtis, Walter Matthau, Bea Arthur, Elaine Stritch, Rod Steiger and Marlon Brando. He also began a lifelong friendship with another struggling actor, Sidney Poitier, whose parents were from the Bahamas.

At the New School, Belafonte’s performance of an original song, “Recognition,” won him applause and prompted him to consider a music career. He landed a job singing standards like “Pennies From Heaven” for $70 a week at the Royal Roost, a New York nightclub, and his original two-week contract was extended to 22.

He bought a club in Greenwich Village and gravitated to folk music as the best way to combine his acting and singing talents. He had a three-month gig at the Village Vanguard, made his movie debut as a school principal opposite Dorothy Dandridge in Bright Road (1953) and in 1954 won a Tony Award for his performance in the musical revue John Murray Anderson’s Almanac.

In 1954, Belafonte starred in Otto Preminger’s film adaptation of Oscar Hammerstein’s Carmen Jones, again with Dandridge, and was a Broadway sensation a year later in the song- and dance-filled 3 for Tonight.

After signing with RCA Records, Belafonte released two albums in 1956 that shot him to stardom: Belafonte, which also made it to No. 1 on the Billboard charts, and the West Indian-flavored Calypso. (Mark Twain and Other Folk Favorites, which was released in 1954, leap-frogged to No. 3 that year.)

“When I sing the ‘Banana Boat Song,’ the song is a work song,” Belafonte said in a 2011 interview with NPR. “It’s about men who sweat all day long, and they are underpaid, and they’re begging the tallyman to come and give them an honest count — counting the bananas that I’ve picked, so I can be paid. And sometimes, when they couldn’t get money, they’ll give them a drink of rum.

“There’s a lyric in the song that says, ‘Work all night on a drink of rum.’ People sing and delight and dance and love it, but they don’t really understand unless they study the song that they’re singing a work song that’s a song of rebellion.”

In 1956, Belafonte broke a 39-year record when he attracted a crowd of 25,000 to Lewisohn Stadium, an open-air auditorium on the campus of City College of New York since razed. He played The Palace in New York for 14 weeks and the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles for four, filling the venue to capacity at each performance (he released a live double album from a show there in 1963). And in 1971, he played a record 16-week engagement at L.A.’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

“When Harry Belafonte strides out of semi-darkness into the spotlight of stage center at the Palace Theatre, the total effect will be theatrical but simple — deceptively simple,” The New York Times wrote in 1959. “The open-necked cotton shirt he wears, the lights which bathe his easy grace, the projected scenery, the musical effects, none of this will be there because of happenstance.”
