Haiti gang opens fire on pastor-led march, kills several

A powerful gang in Haiti opened fire on a pastor-led march through an area controlled by the gang near the capital Port-au-Prince, killing several of the marching parishioners.

The gang, which controls the northern Canaan suburb, fired at the protesters with machine guns. Local rights group CARDH said at least seven people were killed, with the group’s director Gedeon Jean expecting the death toll to rise.

Jean said that several people were wounded, with some churchgoers even kidnapped.

What do we know about the march?
Videos shared on social media showed some 100 people marching in Canaan. Many of the protesters donned yellow shirts associated with Pastor Marco’s religious group, while some were seen carrying sticks and machetes.

Journalists at the scene filmed the attack on the march in real time, Marie Yolène Gilles, director of human rights group Fondasyon Je Klere, told The Associated Press.

Unverified videos on social media showed people who appear to be hostages saying they thought the march was peaceful and were unaware it addressed the gang.

In a shocking incident at southwest Delhi’s Dwarka society, a 42-year-old woman attacked multiple people including a delivery person who asked her about directions to an address. After first stabbing a delivery person multiple times, she attacked a few other residents and some cops at a society. The incident took place on August 18. Police have filed a case has been filed and the woman has been arrested.
The incident was caught on CCTV cameras in the society and the footage shows the woman in an argument with the delivery executive and then flinging his scooter’s keys into the bushes.
The accused, identified as Sarita Bhatia, was produced in a court and was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days, police said on Thursday. Bhatia, who hails from Himachal Pradesh, lived alone in a single-room flat in the society. The residents reported she often exhibited aggression toward neighbours.

Accusing the Delhi Police of indulging in hooliganism, Maliwal on Tuesday morning said, “They are neither allowing me to meet the girl nor her mother. I can’t understand what do the police want to hide from me. I am being told that the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson was allowed to meet the girl’s mother. When the NCPCR chairperson can meet the mother, why is the DCW chief not being allowed for the same?”

Taking to X (formally Twitter) Maliwal wrote, “Since 12 noon yesterday, I am sitting outside the hospital to meet the victim girl or her family. Slept outside the hospital at night. The NCPCR can be introduced to the girl’s mother, so why have I been asked to stop? What are you trying to hide?”

The girl has been sexually assaulted for several months resulting in her pregnancy. On Monday, the Delhi Police arrested the government official Premoday Khakha (51) and his wife Seema Rani (50).

“In the case of sexual assault with a minor, we have arrested two persons. One of them is Premoday Khakha, 51 years old, is a Deputy Director in the Department of Women and Child Development of GNCT and the second accused is his wife, Seema Rani, 50 years old,” DCP (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said.
