Days after Poonam Pandey faked her own death, it has now been reported that a Rs 100 crore defamation case has been filed against the actress and her former husband Sam Bombay. As reported by Pinkvilla, the case has been filed by Faizan Ansari. He accused Poonam Pandey of “trivializing the seriousness of cancer and manipulating the emotions and trust of millions” by faking her own death. He has reportedly also urged the authorities to arrest Pandey and her former husband.

Ansari has also filed an FIR with the Kanpur Police Commissioner. “Poonam Pandey and her husband Sam Bombay conspired to stage her death, making a mockery of a serious illness like cancer. Poonam Pandey orchestrated this stunt for her personal publicity, betraying the trust of millions of Indians and the entire Bollywood industry,” the FIR read.

For the unversed, Poonam Pandey’s ‘death’ news was announced in a post shared on her official Instagram handle on February 2. “This morning is a tough one for us. Deeply saddened to inform you that we have lost our beloved Poonam to cervical cancer. Every living form that ever came in contact with her was met with pure love and kindness. In this time of grief, we would request for privacy while we remember her fondly for all that we shared,” the post read.

The “Top Gun: Maverick” star, 61, has been “growing closer” to Russian socialite Elsina Khayrova, 36, over the past couple of months and is now officially dating her, the Daily Mail reports.

“It’s well known within Elsina’s circle that she and Tom are now an item,” an insider told the outlet.

“They’ve grown very close over the past few weeks but take a lot of care not to be photographed together because they want to maintain their privacy,” the source continued.

But no matter how many takes it took, he cried so deeply every time that it was unbelievable. In the middle of takes when he would be standing, ready for the shot, he would keep muttering one line to himself — “Main bhi yahan tak bina oxygen support ke pahuncha hoon, woh bhi nange pair.” This is the line Manoj Kumar Sharma says to the panellists during his interview.”
Jaskunwar continued in his caption, “Later, when the shot was done, Vikrant sat down on the floor, but did not stop crying. He cried, and he cried as Medha gently held him by the shoulders. “It’s also my story,” he told her through his tears. “It’s taken me 19 years to get hereâ€æ and I’ve also reached here without oxygen support Medha, barefoot. It’s my story as well.”

Reddy Vanga’s comments came after Kiran Rao allegedly criticised his films in one of her recent interviews. However, Rao, in her latest interaction with a media portal, has denied commenting on Reddy Vanga’s films and also shared her thoughts on his remarks about Khan.

“I have never commented on Mr Sandeep’s films because I have never seen them. I have often spoken on misogyny and the representation of women on screen. I have talked about it on various platforms at various times. But I have never taken the name of any film because it is not about the specific film. Why Mr Vanga has assumed that I was talking about his film you’ll have to ask him. I have never seen his film,” Rao told The Quint.

On Reddy Vanga’s statement that Aamir himself did misogynistic songs like ‘Khambe jaisi khadi hai’ back in the day, Rao said that her ex-husband was one of the few people who had apologised for it. “There are very few people who would look back at their body of work and apologise for doing something problematic in retrospect,” she added.

Taylor Swift won album of the year at the Grammy Awards for “Midnights,” breaking the record for most wins in the category with four.

She began her speech by thanking her producer and friend Jack Antonoff and added, “I would love to tell you this is the happiest moment of my life,” she told the crowd, but said she feels this happy when she creates music and plays shows.

Earlier in the night, Taylor Swift used her 13th Grammy win on Sunday to announce her new album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” will arrive April 19.

“I know that the way that the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans,” she said while accepting the best pop vocal album award. “So, I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I’ve been keeping from you for the last two years.”

Billie Eilish won song of the year for writing the “Barbie” hit, “What Was I Made For?” She thanked director Greta Gerwig for “making the best movie of the year.”

A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson told the PA news agency that a man was arrested at the awards ceremony, but declined to provide their identity.

They said: “Just after four o’clock this afternoon, a male adult was detained by police for a physical altercation that occurred inside the Crypto.com Arena.

“They handcuffed the individual and they removed them from the event and he is currently being questioned by authorities.

“If the individual is booked and arrested, then that’s when the identity will be available on that individual.”

Taylor Swift, SZA and Boygenius were just a few of the big winners at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, which took place on Feb. 4 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Of course, the big news of the night came from Swift, who announced her new album “The Tortured Poets Department” while on stage. The pop star revealed the album would be arriving on April 19 while accepting her 13th Grammy award, for best pop vocal album with “Midnights.”

The Big Four were awarded to Billie Eilish for song of the year with “What Was I Made For?,” which also won in the best song written for visual media category; Variety cover star Victoria Monét for best new artist; Miley Cyrus for record of the year with “Flowers”; and Swift for album of the year with “Midnights.”

Whisper it quietly… but could the Grammy Awards get it right this year?

The ceremony, which takes place in Los Angeles on Sunday, is notorious for scoring own goals, often rewarding middle-of-the-road heritage acts over cutting-edge, contemporary pop.

Chart stars Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus, Lana Del Rey and Ice Spice also have multiple nominations in a female-led field.

1) How to watch the Grammys

First of all, brew a strong pot of coffee.

More than 80 awards will be handed out in what’s called the “premiere ceremony” at 20:30 GMT on Sunday (12:30 in Los Angeles).

It’s often worth tuning in. The winners in the more obscure categories are less polished and more excited about winning, and the performances are looser and, dare I say it, more musical than the Hollywood-scale set pieces you’ll see later.

3) Joni and Tracy could put young stars in the shade

Modern-day superstars Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, SZA and Olivia Rodrigo will no doubt put on lavish performances of their big hits.

But the show is likely to be stolen by two other female artists who have largely been out of the public eye in recent years.

Joni Mitchell is guaranteed a reception worthy of a living legend when she makes her debut Grammys performance at the age of 80.

And Tracy Chapman is heavily rumoured to be making a very rare public appearance to join country star Luke Combs on her 1988 classic Fast Car, which he took back to the charts last year.

The night’s other performers will include Billy Joel, Travis Scott and Burna Boy.

4) A win for SZA is a win for Scotland

In the US, SZA’s second album SOS topped the charts for 10 weeks and marked the singer’s ascension to the major league.

Born in Missouri and raised in New Jersey, the singer – real name Solána Imani Rowe – trained in marine biology before launching her music career.

If her latest album picks up a Grammy, it will also mean a win for a 20-year-old music producer from Scotland.

Blair Ferguson, who writes under the name BLK Beats, wrote the music for her hit single Snooze in his Glasgow bedroom, and it went on to sell more than two million copies in the US.

“SZA is just a genius and she’s able to transform any record with the way she comes up with a melody,” he told BBC News. “I don’t think any other artist could have made that track.”

The stars were spotted attending Jay-Z’s pre-Grammys shindig in West Hollywood Friday night at the same time — and even matched in all-black attire.

Kardashian, 43, arrived with her younger sister Khloé Kardashian, according to TMZ, while Beckham Jr., 31, showed up separately from them.

The outlet claimed there were some murmurs that the SKIMS founder and Baltimore Ravens player had a private moment in the parking garage together, but it was not confirmed.

Kim’s luxury Range Rover was photographed pulling away from the party around 1:30 a.m., but she was not seen inside thanks to the vehicle’s blacked-out windows.

Brad Pitt has won the latest round in his epic legal battle against his ex, Angelina Jolie, over their $500 million French vineyard, sources told Page Six.

The “Moneyball” star, 60, has been in court in California and in Luxembourg over Château Miraval, arguing that he should have a controlling interest in the vaunted vineyard after Jolie, 48, sold her shares to Yuri Shefler, owner of Russian vodka giant Stoli.

Before they married, the couple bought the estate together, with Pitt owning 60 percent and Jolie 40 percent.

They tied the knot at the winery in 2014, and Pitt gifted Jolie an extra 10 percent as part of their wedding, making it a 50-50 asset when they split in 2016, we’re told.

Jolie then sold off her shares, but Pitt has been arguing that her deal was not valid and that he should still retain a 60 percent ownership.

A source close to the case told Page Six: “He owned 60 [percent] and she owned 40 [percent]. When they got married, it was a conversation where everything was all roses [at the time]. The agreement was for her to get 10 percent from him, a 50/50 agreement that they reached for one euro. It was symbolic of their partnership.”

However, Pitt has been arguing in court that the couple’s agreement for the extra 10 percent is unenforceable, sources tell us, and that he should get back the percentage and maintain control of the property.

For weeks, scrutiny over singer Taylor Swift’s travel in private jets has been bubbling up on social media, with people pointing out the planet-warming emissions of carbon dioxide released with every flight.

The megastar is dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, one of the NFL’s most celebrated players. The growing romance between the couple has been closely watched, with Swift showing up at several games — which has meant much travel on private jets. The chatter got even louder the last few days after the Chiefs beat the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, sending them to the Super Bowl, which is in Las Vegas on Feb. 11.

Swift, the hitmaker whose dominance of pop culture now includes the first tour to gross more than $1 billion, is the latest in a long list of celebrities, government officials and elite businesspeople to come under scrutiny about private jet travel. A look at Swift’s recent travel, carbon dioxide emissions from private jets versus commercial planes and one of the most common, albeit controversial, solutions floated to address such pollution.

SWIFT’S CARBON FOOTPRINT

If Swift attends the Super Bowl, she will be traveling from Tokyo, where she is on tour. That will mean more than 19,400 miles (30,500 kilometers) by private jet in just under two weeks. Just how much carbon dioxide will that be?

While exact carbon emissions depend on many factors, such as flight paths and number of passengers, a rough estimate is possible, said Gregory Keoleian, co-director of the Center for Sustainable Systems at the University of Michigan. Traveling 19,400 miles on a Dassault Falcon 900LX, one of Swift’s jets, could release more than 200,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, he said.

That would be about 14 times as much as the average American household emits in a year, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

How realistic commercial travel would be for Swift is open for debate. After all, she’s so famous that even if she wanted to, flying on commercial flights might be chaotic for an airline crew and any public airport she frequents. Keoleian said there are other important ways that public figures flying private can address climate change, such as through their influence on public attitudes and perceptions, investments and who they vote for.

The controversy over Swift’s use of private jets illustrates the “great disparity” between the wealthy and lower-income people when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions each person generates, said Julia Stein, a professor at University of California, Los Angeles School of Law.

Shatrughan Sinha questioned whether there was any provision for health insurance for everyone, expressing concern about broader healthcare coverage.

Expressing scepticism about the budget presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, TMC MP Shatrughan Sinha asserted on Thursday that the budget is ‘futuristic’ and there is nothing for today and everything is for 2047.
“The budget is futuristic. Everything is for 2047 but what is there for today? You talk about four sections: women, poor, farmers, and the youth. What have you done for them? Does this budget say anything about increasing employment or doubling farmer’s income?” the Asansol MP asked.

Expressing satisfaction with the healthcare budget and the vaccination initiative for girls, Mr Sinha remarked that “it is good that girls aged 9-14 years will receive free vaccination to prevent cervical cancer”. However, he questioned whether there was any provision for health insurance for everyone, expressing concern about broader healthcare coverage.

Even as Union Ministers hailed the Union Budget tabled by Union Finance Minister on Thursday as an ‘inclusive budget’, it drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders who dubbed it an ‘election budget’.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said that the interim budget is merely a financial web to trap people.

“The interim budget presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman failed to meet the expectations of the countrymen,” said Mr Sukhu.

Lashing out at the Centre, Mr Sukhu said, “There was no mention of the expansion of the rail network for the state. There is also no mention of any rapid mass transit system for hilly states like Himachal, where metro rail cannot be started.”

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas bought their Los Angeles mansion in 2019 for $20 million. They have now filed a legal suit seeking ‘consequential damages’ from sellers of the house.

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, who have been living in their dream home in Los Angeles since 2019, have moved out of the property after it became “virtually unlivable” as per a report by Page Six. The water damage in the property led to a mold infestation and the couple is now in a legal battle with the sellers of the house. The damages to the property have made it “dangerous from a health perspective to occupy.”

The luxury property with seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, temperature controlled wine cellar, chef’s kitchen, home theatre, bowling alley, spa and steam shower, gym and a billiards room, was bought by the couple for $20 million in 2019. As per the lawsuit, which was filed in May 2023, the pool and spa began presenting problems soon after the purchase. The waterproofing issues in the premises led to “fostered mold contamination and related issues.” The complaint also said that around the same time, there was another water leak in the barbecue area on the deck.

Chopra and Jonas are seeking “consequential damages.” The lawsuit, as per Page Six states, “In the alternative, plaintiff should be reimbursed for all costs of repair, plus compensation for the loss of use and other damages caused by defendants’ conduct.” The report suggests that the cost of repairing the property will exceed $1.5 million, and could go up to $2.5 million (approx Rs 13 to 20 crores).

Meanwhile, Priyanka, Nick and their daughter Malti Marie have moved into another property until their home is repaired. Priyanka and Nick travel around the globe for their work but are based out of Los Angeles.

KIM Kardashian has announced she will be producing and playing a key part in a new biography on Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor.

But fans of the Cleopatra star are calling Kim’s casting a disgrace.

Kim, 43, has been flexing her acting chops in several recent film and television roles.

Now The Kardashians star is set to produce and star in a documentary series about Elizabeth Taylor for the BBC.

The three-part series is tentatively titled Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar.

The show promises to uncover and follow Elizabeth’s life – from child star to the highest-paid actress in the world, to her later years as a billion-dollar businesswoman, activist, and advocate.

Kim has a long history with the Cat on a Hot Tin Roof star, and she was the last person to interview Elizabeth before she died in 2011 at the age of 79.

The reality star is a savvy actor and businesswoman herself and has listed Elizabeth as an inspiration.

“Elizabeth Taylor was unapologetically herself, a fighter,” Kim said in a statement about the series.

“She is proof that you can keep evolving and changing and have different chapters in your life – and she paved the way for all of us who came after her with that blueprint.”

Joining Kim to discuss and reflect on the Oscar winner’s life are friends and family from throughout her many endeavors, such as Dame Joan Collins, a friend and Hollywood contemporary who competed with Elizabeth for the role of Cleopatra, Dr. Anthony Fauci who worked alongside Elizabeth in the fight against AIDS, and many others.

However, many fans of Elizabeth are slamming Kim’s involvement, and flooded X, formerly Twitter, with their objections.

The wait will be over this Thursday as the biggest film of the year so far, Fighter, will be hitting the screens. “There have been racial barriers, and it has been challenging to be accepted as Japanese.”

That’s what a tearful Carolina Shiino said in impeccable Japanese after she was crowned Miss Japan on Monday.

The 26-year-old model, who was born in Ukraine, moved to Japan at the age of five and was raised in Nagoya.

She is the first naturalised Japanese citizen to win the pageant, but her victory has re-ignited a debate on what it means to be Japanese.

While some recognised her victory as a “sign of the times”, others have said she does not look like what a “Miss Japan” should.

Her win comes nearly 10 years after Ariana Miyamoto became the first bi-racial woman to be crowned Miss Japan in 2015.

Back then, with a Japanese mother and African American father, Ms Miyamoto’s victory raised questions about whether a person of mixed race should be eligible to win the competition.

Now, the fact Ms Shiino has no Japanese parentage has upset some on social media.

“This person who was chosen as Miss Japan is not even a mix with Japanese but 100% pure Ukrainian. Understand she is beautiful, but this is ‘Miss Japan’. Where is the Japaneseness?” said a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“If she was half [Japanese], sure no problem. But she’s ethnically 0% Japanese and wasn’t even born in Japan,” said another comment.

Others said her win was sending the “wrong message” to others in the country.

“I think that Japanese people naturally (would) get the wrong message when a European looking person is called the most beautiful Japanese.”

Others questioned whether choosing the Ukrainian-born model was a political decision.

“If she were born Russian, she wouldn’t have won. Not a chance. Obviously the criteria is now a political decision. What a sad day for Japan,” one person alleged.

Oppenheimer leads the 2024 Oscar nominations, which were unveiled Tuesday morning.

The film nabbed a total of 13 noms, followed by Poor Things with 11, Killers of the Flower Moon with 10 and Barbie with eight.

All four films will compete for best picture of the year, along with American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Maestro, Past Lives and The Zone of Interest.

Among those setting records with their noms were Lily Gladstone, who is the first Native American acting nominee, and Martin Scorsese, who is now the most nominated living movie director.

Meanwhile, the high-profile snubs included Leonardo DiCaprio and Greta Gerwig.

The 2024 Oscars are the first in which films must meet two of four representation and inclusion standards in order to be eligible for the top prize of best picture.

Bigg Boss 17 is currently gearing up for its grand finale. On Tuesday, Bigg Boss announced a surprise mid-week eviction and left everyone in shock. All six contestants – Ankita Lokhande, Vicky Jain, Mannara Chopra, Munawar Faruqui, Arun Mahshetty and Abhishek Kumar were called to the activity area following which they were asked to open their respective letters. The word biopics in Bollywood pops up almost every month now. Just last month, we were treated to Vicky Kaushal’s Sam Bahadur and this month, we walk into Main Atal Hoon. Based on the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the film stars Pankaj Tripathi in the titular role and boy, it surprises from the word go.

National Award-winning director Ravi Jadhav (who has earlier made films like Natarang Balgandharva, Balak Palak, Timepass, and Nude) along with Pankaj Tripathi offer an interesting drama for those who don’t know much about the late statesman. The protagonist’s journey from joining the RSS (Rashtriya Seva Sangh) to studying law, becoming an editor of a newspaper forming the Bhartiya Janata Party, and becoming the 10th Prime Minister of India is captured well.

A biopic on such a personality, revered by millions even six years after his demise, is a herculean task. Filmmaker Jadhav has excellently shouldered the responsibility and given us a film, which, most importantly, does not deny anything—be it Vajpayee’s commitment to the Ram temple in Ayodhya to acknowledging his relationship with Rajkumari Kaul who was Vajpayee’s companion for many decades. Vajpayee even adopted her daughter Namita. He stayed with the Kauls for many decades, through his rise to being India’s Prime Minister.

What the film also doesn’t do is showcase chest-thumping patriotism nor does it try to whitewash the image of any past or current political leaders. While it’s easy for a biopic to glorify its subject, in a welcome departure, Main Atal Hoon presents the bare truth of the protagonist’s career. It does take a few liberties, but for the most part, the film portrays him as the belligerent leader that he was. The director makes some smart decisions, like presenting most of the first half in a monochrome tone which helps establish the period setting of the film. The story begins in the late 30s, when Vajpayee was just a child and it travels right through the 70s, 80s, and 90s, as he rises to the ranks of the world of politics.

But, the inconsistent screenplay doesn’t help the film at all. The director also gets a bit indulgent on occasions, employing ambitious cinematic transitions including a few songs which seemed to be unnecessary in the plot. Another let-down is the pace of the film. At 142 minutes there are times when the film moves at a snail pace. The film fails to stir any emotions and doesn’t leave any impact.

Ranaut had recently filed a petition stating that Akhtar’s complaint and a cross-complaint filed by Ranaut stemmed from the same incident and should be tried together to avoid conflicting judgments.

Lyricist Javed Akhtar has responded to a petition by actor Kangana Ranaut before the Bombay High court to stay proceedings in a defamation case filed against her by Akhtar, by asserting the Ranaut only filed such a petition to delay proceedings in the defamation case.

Ranaut had recently approached the High Court through advocate Rizwan Siddiquee seeking a stay on the trial arising from Akhtar’s complaint.

According to her plea, both her complaint and Akhtar’s complaint stem from the same incident and hence ought to be tried together to avoid conflicting judgments.

Akhtar has now opposed this petition by filing an affidavit drafted by advocate Jay Bharadwaj. Akhtar has argued that there is no basis for Ranaut to invoke the writ jurisdiction of the High Court in this matter.

He claimed that Ranaut’s petition was filed to delay proceedings before the Andheri magistrate.

“Ranaut is not challenging any judicial order passed by a court but has based the entire writ petition on assumptions and presumptions coupled with an unwarranted optimism of the proceedings pending in courts below,” the affidavit underscored.

Akhtar further pointed out that the prayer in Ranaut’s petition before the High Court was vague and untenable.

When the matter was taken up by the High Court today, a division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Manjusha Deshpande directed the High Court registry to verify whether the matter should be heard by the single bench or a division bench.

By way of background, Akhtar had filed a defamation complaint against Ranaut in 2020, taking exception to certain remarks made by her in an interview aired on Republic TV.

The remarks made by Ranaut was in relation to a 2016 meeting between her and Akhtar.

Meanwhile, Ranaut also filed a cross-complaint against Akhtar raising allegations of criminal conspiracy, extortion and outraging modesty by invading her privacy.

The Globes, traditionally a clubby, chummy event, took place following one of the most chaotic and divisive years in Hollywood history as the writers and actors unions went on strike for months, fighting over restrictions on the use of A.I. and a streaming business model they claimed made it harder to earn a living. The Screen Actors Guild and the Writers Guild of America eventually reached deals in September and November, but production on many movies and shows was disrupted, leaving an economic toll.

Sunday’s ceremony was broadcast on CBS, a new home for the telecast, which had aired on NBC since 1996. It caps a tumultuous period in the awards show, which has been rocked by scandals in recent years and is trying to reinvent itself. Among other changes, the Globes introduced two new categories: an award for best blockbuster, which went to “Barbie,” and one for stand-up comedy special, which was won by Ricky Gervais, a five-time Globes host. Like “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie” was an unlikely box office success in a business dominated by action and comic book movies, something its star and producer Margot Robbie mentioned while accepting the blockbuster prize. She thanked Warner Bros. and Mattel, the film’s backers, for “literally inventing numbers to justify green lighting this, and then standing by at every step of the way.”

Comedian Jo Koy hosted the show and peppered his opening monologue with jokes about Robert De Niro having a kid at 80, Barry Keoghan’s full-frontal nudity in “Saltburn” and the 3-hour runtime of “Oppenheimer.” “My new year’s resolution for 2024 is to finish ‘Oppenheimer’ in 2025,” Koy said. “Seriously! I’m almost there! I loved ‘Oppenheimer.’ Especially the first season.” Koy’s quips received a muted response from the celebrity-heavy crowd, a tepid reaction the host acknowledged. “I got the gig 10 days ago,” he said. “You want a perfect monologue? Shut up.”

The Globes have an erratic track record for predicting eventual Oscars success. Last year’s top prizes went to “The Fabelmans” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” but it was “Everything Everywhere All at Once” that would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. But other past Globes winners like “Nomadland” and “Green Book” have prevailed at the Oscars. A perfectly calibrated speech can also help contenders build momentum. Nigel Lythgoe has stepped down from his role as a judge on “So You Think You Can Dance” days after Paula Abdul sued him for sexual assault.

“I have informed the producers of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ of my decision to step back from participating in this year’s series,” he told TMZ Friday.

“I did so with a heavy heart but entirely voluntarily because this great program has always been about dance and dancers, and that’s where its focus needs to remain.”

Lythgoe, 74, concluded his statement, saying, “In the meantime, I am dedicating myself to clearing my name and restoring my reputation.”

19 Entertainment, Dick Clark Productions, and FOX also told Page Six, “The upcoming season of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ will proceed, although without Nigel Lythgoe, to ensure the show remains committed to the contestants, who have worked incredibly hard for the opportunity to compete on our stage.”

“No decision has been made as to a replacement judge for this season, which will premiere on FOX on Monday, March 4th.”

The move comes a week after Abdul, 61, filed a lawsuit against the director, alleging that he sexually assaulted her in a hotel elevator while they were traveling for “American Idol” during one of the show’s “initial seasons.”

“Lythgoe shoved Abdul against the wall, then grabbed her genitals and breasts, and began shoving his tongue down her throat,” the court documents obtained by Page Six at the time stated.

“Abdul attempted to push Lythgoe away from her. When the doors to the elevator for her door opened, Abdul ran out of the elevator and to her hotel room. Abdul quickly called one of her representatives in tears to inform them of the assault.”

In the suit, the “Opposites Attract” singer also alleged that a separate incident took place when Lythgoe invited her over to his home for dinner, which she accepted because she believed it was a “professional invitation.”

“Toward the end of the evening, Lythgoe forced himself on top of Abdul while she was seated on his couch and attempted to kiss her while proclaiming that the two would make an excellent ‘power couple,’” court documents read.

“Abdul pushed Lythgoe off of her, explaining that she was not interested in his advances and immediately left.”

Lythgoe denied Abdul’s allegations, saying in a statement to Page Six that he is “shocked and saddened by the allegations” made against him.

Hollywood closed out an up and down 2023 with “Wonka” regaining No. 1 at the box office, strong sales for “The Color Purple” and an overall $9 billion in ticket sales that improved on 2022’s grosses but fell about $2 billion shy of pre-pandemic norms.

The New Year’s weekend box office this year lacked a true blockbuster. (This time last year, “Avatar: The Way of Water” was inundating theaters.) Instead, a wide array of films – among them “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” “The Boys in the Boat,” “Migration,” “Ferrari,” “The Iron Claw” and “Anyone But You” – sought to break out over the year’s most lucrative box-office corridor.

The top choice, though, remained “Wonka,” Paul King’s musical starring Timothée Chalamet as a young Willy Wonka. In its third weekend, the Warner Bros. release collected an estimated $24 million Friday through Sunday and $31.8 million factoring in estimates for the Monday holiday. That brings the film’s domestical total to $142.5 million.

That bested Warner Bros.’ own “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” which, like previous DC superhero films, is struggling. James Wan’s “Aquaman” sequel starring Jason Momoa took in $19.5 million in its second weekend to bring its two-week haul to a modest $84.7 million including New Year’s Day estimates.

The original “Aquaman,” which ultimately surpassed $1.1 billion worldwide, had grossed $215.4 million over a similar period in 2018 – more than double that of the sequel. Internationally, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” added $50.5 million.

Weekend sales only tell part of the story this time of year. From Christmas through New Year’s, when kids are out of school and many adults aren’t working, every day is like Saturday to film distributors.

“The Color Purple,” Blitz Bazawule’s adaptation of the 2005 stage musical from Alice Walker’s novel, debuted on Monday and led all movies on Christmas with $18 million. Through the week, the Warner Bros. release has grossed $50 million, including $13 million Friday through Sunday. That’s a strong start for the crowd-pleaser starring Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson and Danielle Brooks. Audiences gave it an “A” CinemaScore.

The roughly $100 million production, which boasts Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg and Quincy Jones (all from the 1985 film) as producers, should play well through awards season. It’s nominated for several Golden Globes and expected to be in the Oscar mix.

“We saw this opportunity to go wide at Christmas since there were so few movies and we were confident the movie would be well received,” said Jeffrey Goldstein, distribution chief for Warner Bros. “Going into the competitive landscape that’s so thin in January and February, the excitement of awards season could really help ignite a bigger box office.”

Despite a blockbuster-less holiday frame, the last weekend of the year pushed the industry past $9 billion in box office for the year in U.S. and Canadian theaters for the first time since before the pandemic. Ticket sales on the year were up 21% from 2022, according to data firm Comscore.

Still, it was a mark that seemed more easily within reach during the summer highs of Barbenheimer when both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” were breaking box-office records.

The enormous success of those two films changed the trajectory of Hollywood’s 2023, but so did the monthslong actors and writers strikes. Those forced the postponement of some top films (most notably “Dune: Part Two” ), diminishing an already patchwork fall lineup with few guaranteed ticket-sellers. One exception was the last-minute addition of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” which set a new record for concert films.

An early version of Mickey Mouse, one of the most iconic characters in popular culture, will no longer have copyright protection from 2024.

Members of the public will be able to use the image of Mickey and Minnie Mouse featured in their first screen release, the 1928 short film Steamboat Willie, after the copyright expires.

US law allows copyright to be held for 95 years – with Congress expanding it several times during that period.

“It’s sometimes derisively referred to as the Mickey Mouse Protection Act,” Jennifer Jenkins, a professor of law and director of Duke’s Center for the Study of the Public Domain said.

“That’s oversimplified because it wasn’t just Disney that was pushing for term extension. It was a whole group of copyright holders whose works were set to go into the public domain soon, who benefited greatly from the 20 years of extra protection.”

Ms Jenkins said the change was “exciting” and “symbolic”.

She said: “This is it. This is Mickey Mouse… I kind of feel like the pipe on the steamboat, like expelling smoke. It’s so exciting.”

The change means the public will only be able to use the more mischievous, rat-like, non-speaking boat captain seen in Steamboat Willie – not the more modern versions.

A spokesperson for Disney said: “Ever since Mickey Mouse’s first appearance, people have associated the character with Disney’s stories, experiences, and authentic products. That will not change when the copyright in the Steamboat Willie film expires.

“More modern versions of Mickey will remain unaffected by the expiration of the Steamboat Willie copyright, and Mickey will continue to play a leading role as a global ambassador for the Walt Disney Company in our storytelling, theme park attractions, and merchandise.

“We will, of course, continue to protect our rights in the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works that remain subject to copyright.”

Not every feature or personality trait a character displays is necessarily copyrightable, however, courts could be busy in the coming years determining what is inside and outside Disney’s ownership.

Disney also holds a separate trademark on Mickey as a corporate mascot and brand identifier, and the law forbids using the character deceptively to fool consumers into thinking a product is from the original creator.

Steamboat Willie was directed by Walt Disney and his partner Ub Iwerks and was one of the first cartoons to have sound synced with its visuals.

It was the third cartoon made by Disney and Iwerks featuring Mickey and Minnie but the first to be released.

It features a more menacing Mickey captaining a boat and making musical instruments out of other animals.

Other properties entering the US public domain in 2024 are Charlie Chaplin’s film Circus, Virginia Woolf’s novel Orlando and Bertolt Brecht’s musical play The Threepenny Opera.

The current copyright term passed in 1998 brought the US into closer sync with the European Union, making it unlikely Congress would extend it now.

Powerful companies, including Amazon with its fan-fiction-heavy publishing arm and Google with its books project, have been keen advocates for releasing properties into the public domain.

Saif Ali Khan spoke about the marriage and said, “I remember telling my mother.” Sharmila Tagore intervened and said, “Actually I was visiting Mumbai for something and Saif came to me, to meet me. And he said I have something to tell you and he told me. And then of course, I don’t know what I was doing but I was quiet and he says Amma you’re quiet and your colour is changing and you are looking different. And I told him we will talk about it later. And then he left then I rang up Tiger and told him and there was a long silence on his part and then we left it at that. Then I said, I would like to meet her. The next day I called Amrita and we had tea and we chatted, but still quite shocked.”

“How does one suddenly get married at that age,” Karan Johar asked Saif. To which, the actor replied, “It was kind of like running away from home in a sense. I don’t remember so many things going on and I found a kind of security and an idea that it feels great. I thought I could make a home out of that.” Sharmila Tagore added that both Saif and Amrita Singh were very similar in a lot of ways. “Both of them were very similar. Both of them were very funny. Whenever they would talk, it would be a lot of laughter, mimicking other people, tearing somebody to bits in a funny way. He is good at mimicry and she is a great storyteller. They looked really happy together,” she added.

Saif added that his mom was supportive when she got to know about his and Amrita’s marriage. “She (Sharmila Tagore) was supportive when I did it, and I remember it. She had said, I believe you are living with someone and you are doing something. So I said yes and she said that don’t get married. And I said that I got married yesterday. And a big tear fell off of her eye. She started crying and she said, you really hurt me, why didn’t you tell me. So that’s actually what happened there,” Saif Ali Khan said.

The actor also added that Sharmila Tagore was the first person he spoke to before his and Amrita’s separation and said, “About the separation, the first person I spoke to before the separation was my mother, who took a deep breath and there was another pause on the phone and said, I am with you if that is what you want and that helped a lot.”

Speaking about Saif’s and Amrita’s separation, Sharmila Tagore said, “When you are together for such a long time and you have such lovely children, then no break up is easy. Then it is not a harmonious… I know it is difficult to have harmony at that stage, everybody is hurt… so that stage was not nice but I tried. But that’s water under the bridge, she needed time to cool down.”

According to reports, the notice pertains to Gauri’s association with the Lucknow-based real estate company, Tulsiani Group, which is accused of embezzling a substantial amount totaling Rs 30 crore.

Where does artificial intelligence (AI) fit into the world of Indian cinema?

While AI has already disrupted Hollywood with writers going on a strike, the debate around the contentious issue is not widespread in the Indian film industry which employs tens of thousands of people.

Some Indian film industry creators are underplaying the threat of AI for now, while others feel it needs to be taken very seriously.

Director Shekhar Kapur’s debut Indian film, Masoom (1983), followed a woman’s journey towards accepting a child born out of her husband’s extramarital affair. For the sequel to this emotional film, which had delicately handled the complexities around infidelity and social diktats, Kapur decided to experiment with AI tool ChatGPT.

The award-winning director was amazed at “how intuitively AI understood the moral conflict in the plot” and gave him a script in seconds. The AI-generated script depicted the child growing up to resent his father, shifting the gears of their relationship from the first film.

The future with AI will be “chaotic”, Kapur says, as machine learning can do in seconds what will take a bunch of scriptwriters “weeks to do”.

According to a 2019 Deloitte report, India has the largest film industry in the world in terms of films produced each year. The industry employs 850,000 people.

As AI tools get sharper and the internet is filled with uncanny deepfake videos of popular Indian stars, including Rashmika Mandanna and Alia Bhatt, its use is raising both economic and ethical questions.

The use of AI in TV and movie productions was one of the core issues of the actors’ and writers’ strike in the US this year, bringing Hollywood to a standstill for months.

“There hasn’t been a structured conversation around the use of AI in India yet,” says Siddharth Roy Kapur, former president of the Producers Guild of India. But the time to have it is now, he says, because AI tools are “getting smarter literally every second”.

“Where we are today with AI will be very different to where we are three to six months from now,” Kapur says.

So where is India “now”?

AI is far from the point where the “push of a button” generates “everything readymade”, say Keitan Yadav and Harry Hingorani who run Redchillies.vfx.

The visual effects studio was founded by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan nearly two decades ago.

This year, the studio handled visual effects of Khan’s films – Jawan and Pathaan – two of India’s biggest box-office hits.

Yadav and Hingorani say they have been using AI tools for ideas but feel it is yet to match the 4K resolution of a motion picture.

But Guhan Senniappan is on a mission to challenge this thought. He is directing the upcoming Tamil movie Weapon, which will be the first Indian feature film to have a two-and-half minute sequence made entirely by AI.

“We’re working on a superhuman saga with a lot of action sequences and I wanted to convey the story in a new way,” Senniappan says.

Images of the lead actor, Sathyaraj, were used as prompts to generate a younger AI version of him.

“Using AI was a cheaper alternative to live action,” Senniappan says.

Veteran actor Tanuja — mother to actor Kajol and mother-in-law of actor Ajay Devgn — has been admitted to a Mumbai hospital on Sunday evening. Sources said the 80-year-old actor has been admitted due to age-related illness and is under observation at the ICU of a hospital in the city’s Juhu.

“She is under observation and is doing well. There’s nothing to worry about,” a PTI report said.

Daughter of filmmaker Kumarsen Samarth and actress Shobhna Samarth, Tanuja has worked extensively in Hindi and Bengali cinema. She married filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee; and have two daughters, actresses Kajol and Tanisha.

Suniel Shetty has opened up about how he feels when his son-in-law, cricketer KL Rahul, is subjected to nasty trolling on social media.
