Ever since the untimely demise of Sushant Singh Rajput in 2020, debate around ‘outsider vs nepotism in Bollywood’ has been prevalent. Ranvir Shorey, who recently participated in the Anil Kapoor-hosted controversial reality show Bigg Boss OTT 3, has been vocal about the mistreatment of ‘outsiders’ in Bollywood for quite sometime now. From speaking about it on his official social media handles to sharing his views during recent interviews, his honest answers have been making the headlines.

During an interaction with Siddharth Kannan, Shorey was asked about his comment on Jaya Bachchan’s ‘thaali’ remark in respect to the ongoing ‘outsider vs nepotism in Bollywood’ debate. Well taking about the same, the actor denied making the comment on the veteran actress-turned-politician’s remake. He explaiend how back then the comment was spreading like wild fire and it was his opinion on the matter.

The Chandni Chowk To China actor, quoted by Bollywood Shaadis, said, “I did not say it on Jaya ji’s remark, whatever she said at that time was all over the internet. Everybody was talking about that thaali. So even I also gave my opinion but it was not in reply to her.”

He went on to further add that he must have been very angry to make such a comment back then. While people often compliment him for putting down his thoughts honestly on social media. However, he added that he feels that he should take a step back. Ranvir added, “Today if I have to express the same thing. I would probably not express it so sarcastically. I didn’t have to be so angry about it. Maine ye tab likha hai jab mere andar voh gussa panap raha tha, double treatment that met it out in Bollywood. Uspe I think this expresses my anger.”

Rajpal Yadav had set up ‘Navrang Godavari Entertainment Limited’, a production house, in the name of his parents in 2005 and taken a loan of ₹5 crore.

A part of a property belonging to film actor Rajpal Yadav in his native Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh has been sealed by a Mumbai bank over non-repayment of a loan, an official said on Wednesday. Manish Verma, manager of the Shahjahanpur branch of Central Bank of India, said the actor had taken a loan from the Mumbai branch of the bank by mortgaging his property in his native district.

When contacted by PTI, the Mumbai-based actor declined to comment on the matter. Sources close to the actor said Yadav had set up ‘Navrang Godavari Entertainment Limited’, a production house, in the name of his parents in 2005 and taken a loan of ₹5 crore from the Bandra Kurla Complex branch of the Central Bank of India in Mumbai.

At the time of the sealing of property, he owed the bank ₹11 crore, they said. On August 8, a team from the Mumbai bank sealed a part of the house located near the Dak bungalow, they added.

According to locals, the bank officials sealed the building in such a hurry that they failed to even switch off electrical items inside the house. Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Meena said he had no information about the sealing as local police’s help was not sought in the matter by the bank.

His theatre guru from early days, Jarif Malik said the award-winning actor hails from Kunda village of Shahjahanpur district and visits the place at least once every year without fail. Yadav got his initial education in Banda town there and after that, he moved to Shahjahanpur for graduation. It is during his stay in Shahjahanpur that he became interested in theatre, Malik said.

Kangana wants to work with all three Khans
Kangana said, “I would love to produce and direct a film with all three Khans. And I would also love to show the talented side of theirs, wherein they can act, and also look good. And they can also do something, which is very significant to the society. I would like to make a film like that. Because I think they are all very talented.”

“Irfan Khan is one of my favourite Khans’
Kangana then revealed who her favourite Khan in Bollywood is. Kangana, who has often spoken out against Shah Rukh and Aamir Khan, said, “What they are doing is… of course they are adding a lot of revenue to the film industry and we should be eternally grateful to them. Also, they are engaging with a mass of people, who need that kind of engagement. I think there is a very artistic side to all three of them, which has not been explored other than in just a few films. And I would love to explore that with (them) and so many other actors. One actor that I always regret not being able to direct is Irfan Khan saab (sir); he is one of my favourite Khans and I would always miss him.” The actor died of cancer in 2020.

At the trailer launch, Kangana also said she has been ‘boycotted by the industry, adding it is not easy for anyone to stand with her or work with her anymore. She added it was not easy to ‘praise her’.

Her next film, Emergency, also features Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik in pivotal roles. Based on the period when emergency was imposed in the country, it stars Kangana as former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, known for his charismatic screen presence and shedding his shirt for both action and romantic roles over his three-decade career, is opening up about his motivation, the occasional lack of it, and what sustains his passion for film.

Addressing what he describes as the “generational change” that has happened in Indian cinema, Khan said that the thrills that audiences get at the movies are now “not an adrenaline rush, but an emotional rush. It has to keep on happening.”

The iconic actor, who has starred in 65 films, recently received a career achievement award at the 77th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland and also delivered a masterclass at the festival. Khan’s breakout roles — the antagonist in “Darr” (1993) and the lead in “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” (1996), which catapulted him to superstardom — were both filmed in Switzerland, so the award marked a “full circle” moment for him.

In an exclusive interview with Variety at Locarno, Khan discusses his recent action films, his approach to selecting roles and his views on the changing landscape of Indian cinema.

What does the Locarno Film Festival honor mean to you?

For me, it’s quite a journey. I started off becoming known as a romantic hero or a lover boy. So for me to come back to Switzerland and receive an award is nice. It’s like a full circle. I’d heard of the festival, it’s very popular and famous, but I’d never thought that I’d be here receiving an award. The idea is to be able to introduce not just my films, but Indian cinema from the north, south, east, west and say, “Here’s the highest filmmaking nation in the world.”

As you mentioned, you’re known as a romantic hero and you’ve done action films in the past, but none like “Pathaan” and “Jawan.” They were among the biggest Indian hits of 2023 and on a much larger scale than anything you have done before. What did you do to reinvent yourself as this massive action hero?

As much as I love it, I’m surprised by the term of being a romantic hero. I’ve never thought of myself as that, to be honest. The other day, I was sitting with [director] Aditya Chopra, who kind of started this process with “DDLJ” [“Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”]. And he said, “If we count, you’ve done about five or six romantic films, which are considered classic, sweeping romantic films — ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,’ maybe ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,’ ‘Dil To Pagal Hai,’ ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.’” I don’t think “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” is a romantic film. I think I agree with him, but one gets obviously classified as that.

[“Pathaan” director] Siddharth Anand had this title for the last 15-20 years, and I remember him saying that if I ever make a film called “Pathaan,” it has to be with you, sir. Otherwise I won’t make it. So it all came long. I think we signed it in 15 minutes. And “Jawan” was a genre of South Indian films that I haven’t done. So these were two things I think I haven’t touched upon, and I’m sure there are more and I’ll find out as I go along. For me, it’s not a reinvention, it’s the requirement of a role. I didn’t reinvent myself to play a vertically challenged person in “Zero,” I didn’t reinvent myself to play “Fan” as a little psychotic. It’s just adhering to and being honest to the genre of film that I’m in.

I know because the films did so well, people think I’ve reinvented after a sabbatical and come back. To be honest, it wasn’t so seriously thought out. Personally, if you ask me, I love action films. I love “Bad Boys.” I’ve done action before, but to participate in an absolutely in-your-face action film… I got the opportunity. COVID allowed me to build the body. You’re sitting at home working out. So, it all fell into place.

Coming to the period before “Pathaan,” “Jawan” and “Dunki,” some of your films could have done better at the box office and and there was a self-enforced hiatus of a few years.

I try to make it as varied as possible, given the parameters of commercial cinema. Yes, it should have its songs, dances, fights, emotions. But can we say something still new? So, all the films that I do, whether it’s “Jab Harry Met Sejal” or “Zero” or the ones which didn’t do well like “Fan” — I thought it was an interesting film. I love that film. Some of the ones I love the most are the ones which haven’t done well. And I have a reason for it. Cinema is a mass communication medium. It needs to communicate, very simply, to a lot of people. It should not intellectualize. It should not sermonize. I always keep saying it can’t moralize. It should just be simple. Some of these films which didn’t do well were so personal that they were not simple enough, they were so personal they got very shrunk.

The hiatus wasn’t because of the films. I’ve always maintained that the day I don’t feel like getting up in the morning and conquering the shoot, I don’t want to work. It wasn’t the failure of the films, to be honest. I was doing a film in January, and this was in December. Very unprofessional of me. I just woke up and I said, “I don’t want to go and shoot this film.” I called the producer and I said to him that I don’t want to work for a year. He said, “It’s not possible. You don’t sit without working for even a minute. So you don’t like the film, say no, don’t say you’re not working for a year.” And a year and a half later, he did call and he said, “I was really surprised you actually are not working.” So I just didn’t want to work. I just didn’t want to act. I didn’t feel like acting. Because for me, acting is genuinely very, very organic.

I learned how to cook. I learned Italian cooking. I think it’s great food. So I learned how to make the best pizza in the world. Hopefully, I’ll open a restaurant one day. I’ve got lots of facets now that I can indulge in. I learned how to clean. I started cleaning up the house, my room, starting with my handbag to my trolley bag to my laptop bag to different places in the house. I’m now the best cleaner in the house. I can vacuum, clean, I can mop. I can do everything. I did work out, because nothing else to do during COVID, because my hiatus went into COVID. Actually, the whole world went into hiatus when I decided not to work. So, for me, I didn’t lose many years as far as work is concerned, because nobody was working. And I watched films and spent a lot of time with the kids.

Your daughter Suhana was one of the leads in Netflix’s “The Archies” last year and your son Aryan is making his directorial debut with series “Stardom.” Do you advise your children on their career paths?

I don’t think I’m anyone to advise, because all our circumstances, our situations and things that happen to us as an actor — especially in the Indian film industry — are very unique … It won’t turn out [for them] how it turned out to be for me. So I think everybody’s experience will have to be unique.

I do find myself having less knowledge than my children about the way the world now perceives art or entertainment. I’m very good with the acting part. So, if they ever come to me and say, like my daughter does, “There’s a scene, can I just rehearse with you?” I’m not telling her how to say it, because I think her expression may be more relevant to how people like expressions now. I’m very intrigued by why people do it differently than I would, and that’s the reason I would never give them advice how to do it. My son is making his first series or storytelling directorial debut. He does come and ask me, “Does it work? Can it be shorter?” “No, I like it long.” I feel it’s important to say that. So, we have discussions, but I don’t know if I can put it as advisory. They both need to roll as they feel. And hopefully, if I can work with them, maybe [I’ll give them advice] during work. I learn and teach a lot. That’s what actors are supposed to do, give and take.

You’ve not done a Hollywood film so far. Under what conditions or circumstances would you consider doing one?

I think it’s the world’s greatest and biggest cinema in terms of reach and how people watch it. I don’t think I’m in a position to choose and put conditions, but yes, when an opportunity arises — I hope I can speak English well enough. And, I don’t want to sound uppity, but it should be a role worthy of the status the Indian audience has given me. It should not let down.

I come across as very flippant and happy-go-lucky, but I fully respect and realize the amount of adulation I have, how people adore me. People look up to what I do. People have given me too much respect. People have given me and my family everything that I have, people of India and all around the world, Indians and people from the subcontinent. And there’s a respect that I need to keep when I play a role in any film, whether it’s a Hindi film or a South Indian film or a Marathi film or a French film or a Hollywood film. So I don’t think anybody’s offered me that kind of role, yet. I don’t have an agent there. I’ve not also gone looking for it, to be honest.

Justice Navin Chawla said that artistic expression even in the form of a commercial speech cannot be curtailed on the basis of an oversensitive approach.

The Delhi High Court recently refused to stay the release of the Netflix series Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper [The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India & Ors v Netflix Entertainment Services India LLP & Ors].

Justice Navin Chawla watched the trailer of the series and gave a prima facie finding that the show does not refer to the profession of Chartered Accountancy in any manner and hence rejected the argument by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) that the show defames Chartered Accountants (CAs).

“It is a series which appears to be more in the genre of comedy, and merely describes the main character as a topper in Chartered Accountancy Examination. It is neither intended nor can be perceived to be derogatory to the profession of Chartered Accountancy or the toppers or rank holders in the examination conducted by the plaintiff no. 1 [ICAI],” the Court said.

The Bench stressed that artistic expression, even in the form of a commercial speech, cannot be curtailed on the basis of an oversensitive approach.

“I, therefore, do not find any prima facie case in favour of the plaintiffs for grant of an ad interim injunction in their favour at this stage,” the Court said.

The Court made the observation while dealing with a defamation case filed by the ICAI and three CAs against the release of the series on Netflix.

It was stated that the show depicts the profession of Chartered Accountancy in an extremely vulgar and derogatory sense which is illegal.

The ICAI argued that they received emails objecting to this scandalous content of the trailer containing unwarranted innuendos to the profession. The reference to the services rendered by CAs as ‘debit and credit with reference to sexual services offered’ in the trailer is derogatory to the profession, it was contended.

Netflix argued that the web series is completely fictional in nature and there is a disclaimer at the start of the series which proclaims that the series has no reference to any individual or any real person dead or alive.

The streaming platform’s counsel said that within five days, they will also add a disclaimer that the series does not depict or refer to any profession.

Senior Advocate Amarjit Singh Chandhiok along with advocates Pooja M Saigal, Yatin Dua, Kaveri Rawal, and Deepti Bhardwaj appeared for the ICAI.

Salman Khan has opened up about the alleged threats he and his family members have been getting from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang over the years. Last month, the Bollywood superstar recorded his statement in connection to the house firing case when he claimed that the Lawrence Bishnoi gang was trying to kill him. He also revealed that after the firing case in April this year, he asked his family members to be on “alert at all times”.

“I heard a cracker-like sound. Then, at around 4.55 am, the police bodyguard said that two people on a bike had fired from a weapon at the Galaxy Apartment’s first-floor balcony. There had been attempts to hurt me and my family prior to this as well. I have learnt that Lawrence Bishnoi has taken responsibility for the attack from social media. So, I believe that it is the Lawrence Bishnoi gang who have carried out the firing on my balcony,” Salman Khan told the anti-extortion cell of the Mumbai Crime Branch as quoted by India Today.

“Earlier also, Lawrence Bishnoi and his gang members in an interview talked about killing me and my relatives. So, I believe that Lawrence Bishnoi, with the help of his gang members carried out the firing incident when my family members were sleeping inside and planning to kill me and my family members so they carried out the attack,” the actor added.

Khan further detailed the previous threats by the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and said, “After that, in March 2023, an email was received on my official email of an employee in my team threatening me and my family from Lawrence Bishnoi. In this regard, a case was registered by my team member at Bandra police station.” He also revealed that in January this year, two people attempted to trespass his farmhouse in Panvel by using fake names and identities.

In April this year, gunshots were fired outside Khan’s Galaxy Apartments in Mumbai’s Bandra area. Later, it was reported that the Lawrence Bishnoi gang is alleged to be behind the attack as the gangster’s brother, Anmol Bishnoi, claimed responsibility for the shooting incident via a Facebook post.

Venice is the first of the back-to-back-to-back festivals that will essentially launch movie awards season, along with the Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals. While in earlier years its films were generally artier and less mainstream than the movies that appealed to Oscar voters, five of the last seven Golden Lion winners at Venice have gone on to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” was honored by both the Venice jury and Oscar voters last year, and before that Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland,” Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” and Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water.”

Last year, “Poor Things” and “Maestro” were the two Venice films that went on to be nominated for Best Picture, while four others – “El Conde,” “Priscilla,” “Society of the Snow” and the short “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” – were Oscar-nominated in other categories.

This year’s Venice jury will be headed by actress Isabelle Huppert and will also include directors James Gray, Andrew Haigh, Agnieszka Holland, Kleber Mendonca Filho, Abderrahmane Sissako, Giuseppe Tornatore and Julia von Heinz, along with actress Zhang Ziyi.

The Venice Film Festival will begin on Aug. 28 and end on Sept. 7.

Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan tied the knot on June 3, 1973, in an intimate wedding ceremony held in Mumbai. As reported by Rediff, Harivansh Rai Bachchan revealed that the wedding was an intimate affair, with only a handful of guests present at the ceremony. He revealed the wedding took place at one of the couple’s friend’s place on the top floor of the Skylark building in Malabar Hills. He added the baraatis consisted only five people, two of which were the poet himself and political leader, Sanjay Gandhi. He added that Jaya’s family did not seem upbeat about the wedding.

“Jaya’s parents wanted the marriage to be conducted in the Bengali manner, to which we had no objection. The first stage was the var-puja, the veneration of the groom, which involved Jaya’s father coming to Mangal (Amitabh’s residence) with gifts and conducting a small ceremony; I then reciprocated by doing the same for the bride at Beach House. I noticed something quite unexpected at Beach House: nobody in the family, apart from Jaya, showed even the slightest trace of pleasure,” he wrote in the book.

He recalled that Amitabh’s Haldi, which would traditionally be a chirpy affair, was done in a hushed quiet. “The joy that was so confined by this constriction spilled out in a tingling of the spine and a tearful glimmering of the eye, especially in Teji’s case,” referring to Amitabh’s mother, Teji Bachchan. He added that even the neighbours were unaware about Amitabh’s wedding, revealing that the family had lied to them about the decoration in the house. “When the neighbours asked what the long decorative strings of light bulbs signified, we explained that Amitabh would be shooting a film here the next night,” he said.

Kiran Rao returned to the director’s chair nearly after 14 years after her debut film, Dhobi Ghat. Kiran further told Faye that, in a “conventional sense,” her film didn’t make hundreds of crores, or “even ₹30, 40, 50 crores.” In her view, “failure” is the way to describe it, as she felt “responsible” about the film not performing well at the box office.

Bad Newz box office collection day 1: Vikcy Kaushal and Trpitii Dimri’s film is expected to pick up over the weekend.

Vicky Kaushal-starrer Bad Newz released in theatres on Friday and the Anand Tiwari directorial has started its box office journey by making Rs 8.5 crore, as per industry tracker Sacnilk. This is quite impressive considering the last film that made more money than this on its opening day was Eid release Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. BMCM made Rs 16 crore on opening day but fell flat soon after. The opening day figures also make Bad Newz the biggest opener of Vicky’s career so far as this record was previously held by 2019’s Uri, which made Rs 8.2 crore on opening day and went on to make over Rs 245 crore in India.

The overall occupancy for Bad Newz on opening day was just 22.83 percent with most people catching the film’s night shows. In Mumbai, where there are 835 shows, the occupancy observed was 20.75 percent. In Delhi and NCR, the occupancy witnessed 26 percent with 1054 shows. Film distributors and exhibitors were quite excited for Bad Newz as the film’s team aced its promotions and it held strong promise. The number of screens designated to Bad Newz is far more than Akshay Kumar’s Sarfira ever got. Sarfira, on it’s opening day had 472 shows in Mumbai and 570 shows in Delhi and NCR, Bad Newz has double the shows than Sarfira.

Trade experts are expecting Bad Newz to pick up over the weekend. In fact, a Pinkvilla report suggests that the film will earn over Rs 30 crore in its first weekend.

Bad Newz is being bracketed with films like Crew and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, which were both targeted towards city audiences. Crew started its box office journey with Rs 10.28 crore and went on to make Rs 89.92 crore, and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya started it box office journey with Rs 7.02 crore and went on to make Rs 80.88 crore.

The family patriarch has started passing the torch to his two sons and daughter. The oldest son, Akash Ambani, is now chairperson of Reliance Jio, their telecoms business; his daughter, Isha, oversees retail, while the groom Anant, the youngest, has been inducted into the new energy business.

Who are the bride and groom?

Anant has a bachelor’s degree from Brown University, according to Reliance Industries’ website, and oversees the conglomerate’s renewable and green energy expansion.

The dates were reportedly chosen based on the couple’s birth charts, as is typical in Hindu custom, and deemed auspicious. Also keeping with tradition, the wedding will be preceded by days of traditional wedding events and rituals.

On Friday, Indian social media was abuzz with videos from the couple’s sangeet, a ceremony where the bride and groom’s families perform dances for the guests. It also included performances by Bollywood stars like Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh and Salman Khan as well as Justin Bieber, who flew to Mumbai for the event, according to local media.

Dr Cyriac Abby Philips aka The Liver Doc has once again lashed out at Samantha Ruth Prabhu for allegedly playing “victim”. The doctor, who previously slammed the actress for recommending hydrogen peroxide nebulisation, has now called her a “serial offender”. Earlier today, Samantha reacted to his criticism and asked him to be polite.

On Friday morning, Philips took to his X handle and penned down a long note reacting to Samantha’s reaction to his original post.

He called Samantha’s claims about the use of hydrogen peroxide nebulisation “unscientific, pseudoscientific and baseless”.

“Please note, she is a serial offender in the context of healthcare misinformation and she has been in the line of fire previously too. The reason why doctors like me have to spend (waste) time from our busy schedules to fight misinformation online is because it is peddled by large influential “celebrity” accounts that have no regard for public health. Engagement and monetization is their concern,” he wrote.

The doctor further mentioned that “public health and disease prevention” is his prime motive and therefore he will continue to “strongly criticise, be blatant, and brutal” to false claims. He even asked Samantha not to play “victim” and urged her to “unlearn and re-learn”.

“I expected better from someone who claims that she wants to “improve.” This is far from improvement. A rational and logical response would be to delete the public health endangering posts and apologize to her millions of followers and vouch to never quote or cite fraudulent practices or practitioners,” The Liver Doc added.

“Ms Samantha Ruth Prabhu has responded to my “provocative” criticism of her endorsement of unscientific, pseudoscientific and baseless alternative medicine therapies by playing the victim card and endorsing more alternative practices,” he wrote.

“Please note, she is a serial offender in the context of healthcare misinformation and she has been in the line of fire previously too. Disney’s “Inside Out 2” collected $165 million worldwide, including $57.4 million in North America, in its third weekend of release and now has crossed a $1 billion gross, according to numbers from Comscore. Paramount’s “A Quiet Place: Day One” debuted with $98.5 million, including $53 million in North America, releasing across 60 territories.

Vyjayanthi Movies’ “Kalki 2898 AD,” one of the most expensive Indian films ever made with the budget estimated to be $72 million, had a $43 million worldwide three-day weekend, including $5.4 million in North America. The film released on Thursday, June 27, across 42 territories, and its total worldwide gross is currently at $66 million, including previews and $10 million from North America, where it debuted in fifth place.

The Telugu-language film directed by Nag Ashwin stars Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and Deepika Padukone. It was also released in several dubbed language versions including Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam.
