An American tourist has been arrested after allegedly smashing two second-century Roman statues at the Israel Museum – with his lawyer claiming he was experiencing a mental disorder called “Jerusalem syndrome”.

Israeli police have said initial questioning suggests the Jewish-American suspect destroyed the statues in Jerusalem because he considered them to be “idolatrous and contrary to the Torah”.

The Torah is the compilation of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible.

The damaged statues were being restored, museum staff said.

Nick Kaufam, the suspect’s lawyer, has denied the man acted out of religious fanaticism.

Instead, Mr Kaufman said the 40-year-old tourist was suffering from a mental disorder that psychiatrists have labelled “Jerusalem syndrome”.

The condition – a form of disorientation believed to be induced by the religious magnetism of the city, which is sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims – is said to cause foreign pilgrims to believe they are figures from the Bible.

The defendant has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Officials did not release his name due to a gagging order.

The vandalism late on Thursday raised questions about the safety of Israel’s priceless collections and stirred concern about a rise in attacks on cultural heritage in Jerusalem.

Paris Crawling With Bedbugs As French Capital Prepares To Host Olympics Next Year

Despite the concerns, Paris’ deputy mayor Emmanuel Gregoire said that there is “no threat to the Olympic Games”.

Videos of bedbugs in Paris Metro have gone viral on social media.

France’s capital Paris is battling an invasion of bedbugs, just 10 months before the 2024 Summer Olympics. The tiny pests were first spotted in hotels and rental apartments across the city during the summer. Then, moviegoers were disgusted by these bugs in theatres and now, social media users have reported bedbugs crawling around on seats in high-speed trains and Paris Metro. Photos and videos of bedbugs in the Metro train are going viral on X (formerly) with passengers warning others to pay attention before sitting on a seat or dropping their bags.

France24 said in a report that country’s transport minister Clement Beaune has vowed to “protect” the public from the menace by holding a meeting of public transport operators.

Bedbugs had disappeared from daily life in France in 1950s, but their resurgence is mostly due to high population density and more mass transit.

Paris city hall has urged President Emmanuel Macron to take measures to check the infestation, including creating a dedicated task force, said the outlet.

But despite these voices, Paris’ deputy mayor Emmanuel Gregoire said that there is “no threat to the Olympic Games”, and urged everyone to work together to solve the issue. “Bedbugs existed before and they will exist afterward,” he added.

Transport operators have said they will remain “extremely vigilant” and The Local France said there have been no more recent sightings since the one caught on camera by a passenger last week.

If you have any plans to visit Lucknow in October or November, be prepared to land into an accommodation crisis. The Uttar Pradesh capital will be hosting a series of matches for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup due to which hotel rooms are either sold out or their tariffs have tripled particularly on key match days.

While this has added to tourist woes, hoteliers are here to do brisk business. “Yes, after hosting the IPL (Indian Premier League), the city is all set to host the world cup. We are ready for the show. Back-to-back mega events will not only strengthen the hotel industry but generate indirect employment, which is good for UP’s economy,” said Sarvesh Goyal, a hotelier.

According to the official website for the Cricket World Cup, Lucknow will be hosting five prime matches – the first match at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium between Australia and South Africa on October 12; Australia versus Sri Lanka on October 16; Netherlands versus Sri Lanka on October 21; India versus England on October 29; and the last match between Netherlands and Afghanistan on November 3. Maximum footfall, however, is expected for the match between India and England on October 29.

On an average, the tariff for luxury hotels in Lucknow ranges between Rs 5,000 and Rs 11,000 per day. But, on match days, hotels have increased the tariff to Rs 40,000 per day. One of the five-star hotels on the banks of Gomti river, which charges Rs 11,000 per day, has increased its tariff to Rs 40,000 for October 25 and 26.

China fights declining birthrate with ‘Fall in love’ vacation

Colleges in China are now allowing students an entire week off to ‘fall in love’ as per a report in NDTV. The move comes amid an active attempt to reverse the country’s declining population problem.

“Learn to love nature, love life, and enjoy love through enjoying the spring break,” is what the colleges ask of their students while they focus on romance in their seven days off from April 1.

“I hope that students can go to see the green water and green mountains and feel the breath of spring. This will not only broaden students’ horizons and cultivate their sentiments, but also enrich and deepen the teaching content in the classroom,” said the deputy dean of Mianyang Flying Vocational College, one of the nine institutions that have taken it upon themselves to increase the population of China.

Though it may sound like a vacation, these colleges are very strict about the results that they seek from their students and to ensure they actually work hard to fall in love, students are given homework to write diaries, make travel videos, and track their personal development.

As China’s 1.4 billion population declines and ages, in part because of a policy that limited couples to one child from 1980 to 2015, policymakers are faced with a growing urgency to address the situation.
