Internet shut in Haryana’s Nuh, big gatherings banned after Congress MLA arrest

The Haryana government on Friday ordered suspension of mobile Internet and bulk SMS services in Nuh after police arrested Congress MLA Mamman Khan in connection with the communal violence that took place in Nuh on July 31.

Haryana Police arrested Congress MLA Mamman khan.

Hours after Congress MLA Mamman Khan was arrested in connection with the communal clashes in Nuh on July 31, the Haryana government on Friday ordered the suspension of the mobile Internet and the bulk SMS services in the district for two days.

Section 144 has been imposed in Nuh until further orders and people have been asked to offer Friday prayers at home “to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order”.

The order issued by Home Department Additional Chief Secretary T V S N Prasad said, “This order is issued to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order in the jurisdiction of district Nuh in the state of Haryana and shall be in force with effect from September 15 (10.00 am) to September 16 (11.59 pm).”

“It has been brought to my notice by Deputy Commissioner, Nuh, vide his request dated September 14 that there is an apprehension of causing tension, annoyance, agitation, damage of public and private property and disturbance of public peace and tranquillity in the district,” Prasad said.

Haryana Congress MLA Mamman Khan, who was named as an accused in the communal violence that erupted in Nuh in August, was arrested on Thursday.

According to Haryana Police, there was “ample evidence” of his involvement in the violence that occurred following a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) yatra.

The MLA from Ferozepur Jhirka had approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday, seeking protection from arrest, and the hearing was scheduled for October 19.

Mamman claimed he was being falsely implicated in the case, as he was not even present in Nuh on the day the violence broke out.

However, Haryana Police informed the court that the Congress leader was named as an accused after a “proper evaluation of the evidence”. They also asserted that the police possessed phone call records and other evidence to support their case.

Mamman will be produced before the court on Friday.

Lights On, Security In Place: Delhi Ready To Welcome World At G20 Summit

Tight traffic regulations came into effect in the national capital from 5 am today and will continue till 11.59 pm on Sunday.

Stringent traffic curbs, schools shut, fighter jets for security, murals all across the town – New Delhi has pulled out all the stops to ensure a smooth G20 Summit on September 9 and 10.

Here are 10 points about the big story:

  1. Tight traffic regulations came into effect in the national capital from 5 am today and will continue till 11.59 pm on Sunday. Police have said that ambulances, medicines and those working in other essential services will be allowed to move freely.
  2. Vehicles of locals and tourists will also be permitted to move, but only in the area that they are staying in. Authorities have urged people not to visit India Gate and Kartavya Path for walking, cycling, or picnicking.
  3. Schools, banks, and all government offices will remain shut to ease traffic. Borders to neighboring states will also be sealed.
  4. Over 100,000 police and security personnel are expected to patrol the streets, with fighter jets, advanced AI-based cameras, jamming devices, and sniffer dogs at their disposal.
  5. The Delhi Police will also keep a close watch on developments during the summit from its state-of-the-art control room with the help of a network of 5,000 CCTV cameras installed across the city, officials said.
  6. The Summit will be attended by leaders from the Group of 20 (G20) major economies and will witness discussions on some of the world’s most pressing problems like climate change and poverty.
  7. US President Joe Biden will arrive in New Delhi today and will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the Summit.
  8. Prominent issues that could feature during the meeting could be Ukraine, critical and emerging technology, and some of the deals that were announced like that of the drones with General Atomics and jet engines with General Electric.

China to Its People: Spies Are Everywhere, Help Us Catch Them

Beijing sees forces bent on weakening it everywhere: embedded in multinational companies, infiltrating social media, circling naïve students. And it wants its people to see them, too.

Chinese universities require faculty to take courses on protecting state secrets, even in departments like veterinary medicine. A kindergarten in the eastern city of Tianjin organized a meeting to teach staffers how to “understand and use” China’s anti-espionage law.

China’s Ministry of State Security, a usually covert department that oversees the secret police and intelligence services, has even opened its first social media account, as part of what official news media described as an effort at increasing public engagement. Its first post: a call for a “whole of society mobilization” against espionage.

“The participation of the masses,” the post said, should be “normalized.”

China’s ruling Communist Party is enlisting ordinary people to guard against perceived threats to the country, in a campaign that blurs the line between vigilance and paranoia. The country’s economy is facing its worst slowdown in years, but China’s authoritarian leader, Xi Jinping, appears more fixated on national security and preventing threats to the party’s control.

“We must be prepared for worst-case and extreme scenarios,” Mr. Xi told China’s National Security Commission in May. He called on officials to “enhance real-time monitoring” and “get prepared for actual combat.”

The sense of urgency may be heightened by the fact that Beijing is confronting some of its biggest challenges since Mr. Xi’s ascension more than a decade ago. Beyond the economic gloom, China’s relations with the West are increasingly tense. And unexplained personnel changes at the highest tiers of power — including the sudden removal in July of China’s foreign minister and two high-ranking generals — suggest that Mr. Xi may have feared threats to his control.

In July, China revised its anti-espionage law to broaden an already sweeping scope of activities that it regards as spying. It is offering rewards of tens of thousands of dollars to people who report spies.

While the call for mass vigilance has inspired widespread caution, it is unclear to what extent that is translating to action on the ground. In the last month, the authorities have announced the capture of at least four spies, including two men recruited by the C.I.A., but some of the cases appeared to be old ones belatedly announced, such as a married couple arrested in 2019.

The authorities also said earlier this year that they had sentenced an American citizen to life in prison for espionage, and they arrested a high-ranking Chinese newspaper editor while he was dining with a Japanese diplomat. (The editor’s family has called the charges trumped up.)

“The push reflects the profound legitimacy challenges and crisis that the regime is facing,” said Chen Jian, a professor of modern Chinese history at New York University. Professor Chen said the call to mass action bore echoes of the sweeping campaigns that Mao Zedong unleashed in part to consolidate his own power. The most notable was the Cultural Revolution, a decade-long period of chaos and bloodshed when Chinese leaders urged people to report on their teachers, neighbors or even families as “counterrevolutionaries.”

ATTACK OF THE DRONES Moscow under huge kamikaze drone siege shutting ALL major airports with blast near home of Putin’s ‘Iron Doll’

EXPLOSIONS rocked Moscow this morning after Russia attempted to stop a suspected kamikaze Ukrainian drone attack that almost hit a top Putin pundit.

The aerial assault strike wreaked havoc in the capital as flight travel was paralysed only hours after Volodymyr Zelenksy vowed revenge following a deadly Russian missile strike.

Russia claimed to have foiled two attacks by Ukrainian drones this morning, which caused chaos at all of Moscow’s major airports and disruptions to hundreds of flights.

The reports stated that Russian air defences had jammed one of the drones in the Ruzsky district west of the capital and later destroyed another one in the Istrinsky district nearby.

At least two were injured when one of the downed drones fell on a house in the Istrinsky suburb, a regional governor said.

The UAV reportedly exploded close to the sprawling mansion of the Russian propagandist and pro-war fanatic Margarita Simonyan.

The head of the RT state media empire – also known as Putin’s “iron Doll” – complained on Telegram that the drone was shot down “on the street next to us” in her wealthy Moscow suburb.

Pictures showed the trail of air defence missiles, while video captured the moment a drone exploded as it was struck by an air defence strike.

Moscow major airports – Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky – were closed for two hours as air space around the capital was shut under the “Carpet regime”, an emergency plan for incoming drones.

One pilot told passengers: “All airports in Moscow are closed.”

At least four planes bound for Domodedovo were diverted as far as Kazan, some 500 miles to the east.

It comes after Ukrainian president Zelensky promised retaliation for Saturday’s Russian missile strike on the city centre of Chernihiv that killed seven, including a 6-year-old girl.

He vowed that his soldiers would give a “notable response” to the “terrorist attack”, which claimed the life of little Sofia and other victims.

At least 15 children were also among the 148 wounded and at least 25 civilians had been treated in hospital after the strike that the UN deplored as “heinous”.

Drone air strikes deep inside Russia, and often targeted at the capital, have increased since two drones were destroyed over the Kremlin in early May.

As August began, two drone strikes hit government buildings in the heart of Moscow in a devastating blow to Putin.

A week later, the capital was enveloped in further chaos as Ukrainian aerial assaults wreaked havoc above Moscow once again.

Only last week, another huge explosion lit up the capital’s skies after a drone blasted through a building only three miles from the Kremlin.

The attack trailed in the short wake of a Ukrainian naval kamikaze drone strike on Putin’s beloved £3billion bridge that connects annexed Crimea to Russia.

Over the weekend, a daring drone attack deep inside Russia destroyed one of Putin’s prized Tu-22 supersonic bombers at Soltsy airbase.
