Internet shut in Haryana’s Nuh, big gatherings banned after Congress MLA arrest

The Haryana government on Friday ordered suspension of mobile Internet and bulk SMS services in Nuh after police arrested Congress MLA Mamman Khan in connection with the communal violence that took place in Nuh on July 31.

Haryana Police arrested Congress MLA Mamman khan.

Hours after Congress MLA Mamman Khan was arrested in connection with the communal clashes in Nuh on July 31, the Haryana government on Friday ordered the suspension of the mobile Internet and the bulk SMS services in the district for two days.

Section 144 has been imposed in Nuh until further orders and people have been asked to offer Friday prayers at home “to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order”.

The order issued by Home Department Additional Chief Secretary T V S N Prasad said, “This order is issued to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order in the jurisdiction of district Nuh in the state of Haryana and shall be in force with effect from September 15 (10.00 am) to September 16 (11.59 pm).”

“It has been brought to my notice by Deputy Commissioner, Nuh, vide his request dated September 14 that there is an apprehension of causing tension, annoyance, agitation, damage of public and private property and disturbance of public peace and tranquillity in the district,” Prasad said.

Haryana Congress MLA Mamman Khan, who was named as an accused in the communal violence that erupted in Nuh in August, was arrested on Thursday.

According to Haryana Police, there was “ample evidence” of his involvement in the violence that occurred following a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) yatra.

The MLA from Ferozepur Jhirka had approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday, seeking protection from arrest, and the hearing was scheduled for October 19.

Mamman claimed he was being falsely implicated in the case, as he was not even present in Nuh on the day the violence broke out.

However, Haryana Police informed the court that the Congress leader was named as an accused after a “proper evaluation of the evidence”. They also asserted that the police possessed phone call records and other evidence to support their case.

Mamman will be produced before the court on Friday.
