Pickleball is loved by Kim Kardashian and Leonardo DiCaprio – now Scotland will crown its first national champion

The tennis/badminton/ping-pong hybrid, which is popular in the US, has traversed continents and captured the fascination of many in the UK.

Scotland is holding its inaugural pickleball tournament this weekend, as 140 people look to become the nation’s first champion.

There are 10,000 registered pickleball players across Scotland – with tennis coach Judy Murray, Kim Kardashian, and Leonardo DiCaprio all reported to be among the fans of this increasingly popular sport.

“Pickleball is a buzzword, everyone’s talking about pickleball,” said championship director Anne Smillie, explaining how the sport evolved from its invention in the US back in the 1960s.

“Pickleball is a very popular sport in America, over 15 million people play in thousands of pickleball courts that are popping up all over America.”

What is pickleball?

It’s played on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net, and players use paddles and a plastic ball.

The tournament in Glasgow this weekend brings together participants from all over the world.

John Rankin, from Seattle, has come to play in the Masters event.

“The kitchen area is like a seven-foot deep area either side of the net,” he told Sky News.

“And if you’re standing in it, you cannot hit the ball in the air.”
