'India Ahead Of Many Countries': IAEA Chief Commends New Delhi's Role In Net Zero Goal

“Nuclear power is very important for the future and when it comes to civil nuclear energy, India is ahead of many countries,” Mikhail Chudakov, head of the department of nuclear energy and deputy director general, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said. Chudakov also spoke about India’s extensive deposits of thorium.

India is one of the major players in the world of civil nuclear energy, Mikhail Chudakov, head of the department of nuclear energy and deputy director general, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), told TIMES NOW, adding that “new fuels, including nuclear energy will be necessary to combat climate change.”

“Nuclear power is very important for the future and when it comes to civil nuclear energy, India is ahead of many countries,” he said. Chudakov also spoke about India’s extensive deposits of thorium. He said every effort is necessary to replace thermal power and if 70 percent of the world’s coal and oil has to be replaced, every opportunity should be taken, not just the use of uranium. “The thorium cycle has a great future,” he added.

India, he said, has “good collaborations” with leading civil nuclear powers and spoke about India’s work on fast-breeder reactors. He also mentioned that India and Russia were working well together as far as the Kundankulam power project was concerned.
