Thailand Schengen-style visa: Thailand, which has witnessed a boom in the tourism sector in the last financial year, in an attempt to rev up its travel engine is mulling the Schengen-type visa idea to attract long-haul and high-spending travellers to this tropical Southeast Asian country. Thailand along with Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam hosted about 70 million tourists in 2023.
According to a Bloomberg report, Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is planning to rustle up a Schengen-style visa in coordination with Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam to elevate the country’s tourism scope. This visa facility is directed to enable seamless mobility for travellers among the six neighbouring countries.
Thailand and Malaysia together accounted for more than half of the tally of the 70 million tourists generating around USD 48 billion in tourism revenue.
This single-visa scheme is one of the most ambitious tourism initiatives that could be undertaken by the Thailand government if put into effect with a long-term target.
Commenting on the Schengen-style visa facility, a former Thai Hotels Association member said a “common visa could entice long-haul travellers to make an easier decision” while they travel, however, to make the offer more lucrative, it was suggested that the visa validity extended by 90 days from the usual 30-day period.
