Princess Diana’s iconic black sheep jumper fetches nearly £1m at auction

Lady Diana Spencer wore the red “black sheep” jumper during a polo match in 1981, before her marriage to the now King, then Prince Charles. It was discovered in an attic by designer Joanna Osborne and authenticated based on various distinctive details and a photo match.

Princess Diana’s iconic black sheep jumper has fetched a staggering $1.14m (£920,000) in a Sotheby’s auction in New York.

The red jumper, famously worn by Diana at a polo match in June 1981 shortly after her engagement, far exceeded its estimated value of $50,000 to $80,000 (£40,000 to £70,000).

Discovered in an attic in March by designer Joanna Osborne, the sweater features a whimsical black sheep among white ones and is among the initial designs by Osborne and Sally Muir for Warm and Wonderful knitwear, which was founded in 1979.

The winning bidder’s identity remains undisclosed.

Sotheby’s described the sweater as featuring a “whimsical black and white sheep motif” and said it was among the pioneering creations by the knitwear brand.

The Sotheby’s catalogue note says: “Worn by Diana Spencer in 1981 to a polo match of Prince Charles.

“This lot includes two official letters, written in 1981, from Buckingham Palace to Warm and Wonderful politely explaining the jumper had been damaged and requested either a repair or replacement.

“Warm and Wonderful sent her a replacement sweater that she wore in 1983 to another polo match.”

Sotheby’s added: “Further investigation convinced the team: the damaged cuff, the shape, the single sheep at the shoulders, tiny variations in the sheep’s eyes which were individually sewn on…”

Mohamed al-Fayed, ex-Harrods owner whose son died with Princess Diana, dead at 94

Mohamed al-Fayed, the self-made Egyptian billionaire who bought the Harrods department store and promoted the discredited conspiracy theory that the British royal family was behind the death of his son and Princess Diana, has died, his family said.

Born in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, al-Fayed began his career selling fizzy drinks and then worked as a sewing-machine salesman. He built his family’s fortune in real estate, shipping and construction, first in the Middle East and then in Europe.

Although al-Fayed owned establishment symbols such as Harrods, Fulham and the Ritz hotel in Paris, he was always an outsider in Britain, tolerated but not embraced.

He fell out with the British government over its refusal to grant him citizenship of the country that was his home for decades, and often threatened to move to France, which gave him the Legion of Honour, its highest civilian award.

Al-Fayed – who could be charming, autocratic, vindictive, and at times wildly outspoken – spent 10 years trying to prove Diana and his son Dodi were murdered when their car crashed in a road tunnel in Paris in 1997 as they tried to outrun paparazzi photographers on motorbikes.

Unsupported by any evidence, according to the inquest into Diana’s death, he claimed that she was bearing Dodi’s child and accused Prince Philip, the queen’s husband, of ordering Britain’s security services to kill her to stop her marrying a Muslim and having his baby.

Al-Fayed died on Wednesday, his family said, a day before the 26th anniversary of Dodi and Diana’s death.

“Mrs Mohamed Al Fayed, her children and grandchildren wish to confirm that her beloved husband, their father and their grandfather, Mohamed, has passed away peacefully of old age,” the family statement read.

Tapes of Princess Diana discussing ‘ridiculous’ wedding to Charles

The Diana tapes revealed: Princess says getting married to Charles was ‘ridiculous’, that he ‘wanted a girl’ instead of Prince Harry and how she ‘hated’ her step-mother in bombshell recordings released 26 years after her death

• Audio was recorded by Diana in early 1990s for her biographer Andrew Morton

Unheard tapes of Princess Diana claiming getting married to King Charles was ‘ridiculous’, that he ‘wanted a girl’ instead of Price Harry and how she ‘hated’ her step-mother have been revealed in bombshell recordings.

The audio was recorded by Diana in the 1990s for her biographer Andrew Morton, who went on to publish the bestselling book Diana: Her True Story.

Snippets of the clips, which are set to air in an upcoming documentary and have been released just a day after the 26th anniversary of Diana’s death in a car crash, have been released in the US.

Diana claims in the recording that Charles told her mother Frances Shand Kydd at Prince Harry’s christening in 1984: ‘We’re so disappointed, we thought it would be a girl’.

Frances then ‘snapped his head off’ and told him he should ‘realise you are lucky to have a child’, Diana added.

The release of the clips could be particularly damaging for King Charles because they come just a week before the first anniversary of the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

After John’s death in 1992, Raine left the family seat of Althorp due to the strained relationship she had with Charles and Diana. Diana is heard saying: ‘I was so angry. I told her, “I hate you so much. If only you knew how much we all hated you for what you’ve done.

“You’ve ruined the house, you’ve spent Daddy’s money.” I said everything I possibly could and Raine said, “you have no idea how much pain mother put your father through.”

‘I said, “Pain, Raine? That’s one word you don’t even know how to relate to.”

“In my job and in my role, I see people suffer like you’ve never seen. And you call that pain?” I said, “you’ve got a lot to learn.”‘

Diana and her siblings are said to have referred to their stepmother as ‘Acid Raine’ and often sang ‘Raine, Raine, go away!’
