‘Their Action Led To Accident’: CBI Arrests 3 Railways Employees In Balasore Train Tragedy

Odisha Train Accident Case: CBI Arrests 3 Railways Employees

The CBI on Friday arrested three railways employees in the Balasore train tragedy that killed over 290 people. Those arrested included a technician and a junior engineer. All three have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Arun Kumar Mahanta (senior section engineer), Mohammad Amir Khan (section engineer) and Pappu Kumar (technician) have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and destruction of evidence.

The agency said the accused persons have been arrested under sections 304 and 201 of the Indian Penal Code for “their action which led to the incident”.

Earlier, the CRS report pointed to the probing the accident had last week flagged human error of workers in the signalling department as responsible for it. The CRS report dismissed any sabotage angle or a technical glitch or a machine fault. The report claimed that the accident was due to the negligence of few people on the ground who did not follow adequate safety procedures of inspection, particularly after changes were made in the design due to safety concerns three years ago.
