IMD issues ‘orange’ alert for Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand; predicts heavy rainfall in THESE states

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange alert’ for heavy to very heavy rain in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand from August 22-24. This has further put the two states on alert due to the widespread destruction caused by incessant rainfall over the last few days.

The death toll in rain-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand rose to 88 on Saturday with the recovery of another body from the debris of a collapsed temple in Shimla.

“Isolated very heavy rainfall likely over Uttarakhand during August 21-24; over Himachal Pradesh on August 23 and 24 and over northwest Uttar Pradesh on August 22 and 23, 2023,” the IMD said in its latest bulletin.

The Met has also warned of moderate risk of flash floods in catchment areas of Chamba and Mandi districts and predicted a wet spell till August 26. Heavy rain can result in landslides, flash floods and increased water levels in rivers and drains, besides causing damage to standing crops, fruit plants and young seedlings, the weather office said.

Meanwhile, the weather agency has also predicted heavy rainfall over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on August 24 and 25; and over Bihar till August 25. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on August 22 and 23, 2023, it said.

“Isolated very heavy rainfall is also likely over Assam and Meghalaya during 21st–25th and over Arunachal Pradesh during 23rd-25th August, 2023,” the IMD said on Monday.

As for South India, IMD said light or moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall or thunderstorm and lightning with isolated heavy rainfall activity is very likely over Tamil Nadu on August 22, 2023.

It is to be noted that the Centre on Sunday approved the release of Rs 200 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund as advance assistance to Himachal Pradesh to help the rain-battered state undertake relief measures for affected people.

IMD predicts heavy rainfall, issues warning in THESE states till August 5

For northeast India, the Met Department predicted light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall during the next five days.

Heavy to very rainfall with extremely heavy falls at isolated places are likely to occur over east Madhya Pradesh during August 3-5.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in several states till August 5. Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted in parts of east Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar from August 2-5, Odisha from August 2-3, Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand on August 2, and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from August 2-4.

The weather office also said that light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall is very likely to prevail over Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh during 03rd-05th August and in East Rajasthan during 02nd-05th August. Isolated heavy rainfall is also very likely over Odisha on August 2, east Uttar Pradesh on August 2-3, east Madhya Pradesh west Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan on August 3, Uttarakhand during August 3-5 and Himachal Pradesh during August 3-4.

For northeast India, the Met Department predicted light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall during the next five days. Besides this, the weather office predicted light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Konkan, Goa and parts of central Maharashtra during the next five days.

Similar weather conditions have also been predicted for Marathwada on August 2 and Gujarat region on August 4 and 5. Coastal Karnataka is likely to witness light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy rain showers on August 2-4 whereas coastal Andhra Pradesh will witness similar weather conditions.

The Met Department also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Meghalaya, Assam and central Maharashtra on August 2 coupled with heavy rainfall at isolated places over Uttarakhand, west Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan, Vidarbha, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Marathwada and coastal Karnataka.

Similar weather conditions have been predicted over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya on August 4 and over Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya on August 5.

Weather update: IMD issues orange alert for 14 states including UP, Assam, Bihar amid heavy rainfall; check details

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for several Indian states from July 29 to August 2 as heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm) between July 29 and August 2. The states include Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Bihar.

As the monsoon season progresses, weather patterns are shaping up across various regions of India. A Low Pressure Area has formed over north Odisha and adjoining West Bengal Coasts, leading to widespread rainfall in different parts of the country.

Northwest India:
Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and East Rajasthan can expect light to moderate fairly widespread rainfall, with isolated heavy rainfall on July 29 and August 2. West Uttar Pradesh will also experience similar conditions on August 1. Uttarakhand will witness these conditions from July 29 to August 2, and East Uttar Pradesh from July 29 to August 31, with isolated very heavy rainfall likely on July 29.

Central India:
East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are likely to receive light to moderate fairly widespread rainfall, with isolated heavy rainfall between July 29 to 31. West Madhya Pradesh will experience similar conditions on August 1 to 2, while Vidarbha will have isolated very heavy rainfall on August 1 and heavy rainfall on August 2.

West India:
Konkan & Goa and Madhya Maharashtra can expect light to moderate fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall from July 29 to August 1, and isolated very heavy rainfall on August 2. Gujarat Region will experience these conditions on July 29.
