Atlanta car on interstate falls from elevated ramp, kills 5 teens, injures 3 others in Labor Day collision

A vehicle went over a wall of the elevated ramp, falling onto traffic lanes, police said

Five teens were killed, and three others injured, after a vehicle fell from an elevated ramp onto Interstate 85 near Atlanta early in the morning on Labor Day.

According to a press release from Gwinnett County officials, just before 4 a.m. Monday police received a 911 call reporting that a vehicle had gone “over the wall of the raised ramp” and had fallen onto I-85 near Pleasant Hill Rd in Duluth, Georgia.

When emergency personnel responded, they found identified five deceased victims and another three victims who sustained injuries, the release stated. The injured were transported to local hospitals.

In a follow-up press release, officials identified the victims as 17-year-old Katy Gaitan, 16-year-old Ashley Gaitan, 17-year-old Coral Lorenzo, 18-year-old Hung Nguyen and 19-year-old Abner Santana.

Three of the victims attended the local Lakeside High School together in DeKalb County, police said.

In their preliminary investigation, police have determined that two of the involved vehicles crashed, which resulted in one of the vehicles flying over the wall of the ramp and onto the interstate below where it was then hit by another vehicle, FOX 5 Atlanta reported.

Rolls Royce that crashed into tanker at 200 kmph part of 14-car convoy

A Rolls Royce collided with an oil tanker on Tuesday on the bustling Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Kuber Group director Vijay Malu was one of the three occupants of the Rolls Royce.

The Rolls Royce which had collided with an oil tanker on the Delhi-Mumbai-Baroda Expressway was part of a 14-car convoy, the police said. The accident, which occurred on August 22, claimed the lives of two individuals inside the tanker and left occupants of the Rolls Royce with injuries.

Speaking to India Today, Nuh Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya said that prima facie, the fault lies with the driver of the Rolls Royce.

The accident unfolded as a convoy of 14 vehicles was travelling together on the expressway. Suddenly, the Rolls Royce accelerated, overtaking the vehicle in front of it and eventually crashing into the tanker that was taking a U-turn.

Kuber Group director Vijay Malu was one of the three occupants of the Rolls Royce and was injured in the accident. He is undergoing treatment at a Gurugram hospital.

Narendra Bijaraniya shared initial details of the investigation and said, “The Rolls Royce was involved in the accident due to the driver’s error. We have registered an FIR, and a comprehensive investigation is currently underway.”

He said that the authorities have obtained CCTV footage covering the entire expressway, which is aiding in the identification of all 14 vehicles involved in the convoy. Notices are being issued to the owners of these vehicles as part of the ongoing inquiry, the Nuh SP said.

The luxury vehicle was travelling at the speed of 200 kmph, a route patrolling officer told India Today. The permissible speed limit on the expressway is 120 kmph.
