The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has on Saturday arrested two people accused to the case of a transnational conspiracy by Myanmar and Bangladesh-based leadership of terror outfits to wage war against India by exploiting the current ethnic strife in Manipur, an official said.

Manipur has been be ripped by ethnic violence in which several were displaced and many lost their lives. The violence that began in May this year was triggered after Manipur High Court recommended to CM N Biren Singh-led Manipur government to include the majority Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list.

Seiminlun Gangte was the second accused arrested in the case in the past nine days. The case was registered suo motu on 19 July, a spokesperson of the federal anti-terror agency told news agency PTI.

The official added the accused has been brought to Delhi and will be produced before the jurisdictional court.

The Manipur Police arrested Gangte in Churachandpur and handed him over to the NIA.

“Investigation into the case revealed that Myanmar and Bangladesh-based militant groups have entered into a conspiracy with a section of militant leaders in India to indulge in incidents of violence with an intention to drive a wedge between different ethnic groups and to wage war against the Government of India.

“For this purpose, the aforementioned leadership have been providing funds to procure arms, ammunition and other types of terrorist hardware which are being sourced both from across the border and from other terrorist outfits active in the northeastern states to stoke the current ethnic strife in Manipur,” the spokesperson said.

On September 22, the NIA arrested Moirangthem Anand Singh from Manipur in connection with the case.

Further investigation into the matter is still on.

Meanwhile, BJP’s Manipur unit has told its national president JP Nadda that people are angry as the state government has so far failed to contain the ethnic strife.

August has proved to be the worst-ever month in the history of dengue in Bangladesh, with 60,352 cases of the vector-borne disease recorded, Dhaka Tribune reported.

Dengue cases are not likely to ebb anytime soon, the report noted, adding that in August alone, the country witnessed more deaths than the overall toll recorded last year.

This month, Bangladesh has seen 286 dengue deaths, the Tribune reported, adding that the toll translates to 10 deaths and 2,321 cases on an average daily in the last 26 days.

The grim figures come as nine more dengue deaths – five of them in Dhaka alone – were reported in a span of 24 hours till Saturday morning, raising the number of fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease to 537 this year, according to Dhaka Tribune.

During the same period, 1,960 more patients were hospitalised with viral fever, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Of the new patients, 833 were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka and the rest outside the capital, indicating a worsening situation across the country, said the DGHS.

A total of 8,232 dengue patients, including 3,846 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at hospitals across the country.

A powerful storm Cyclone Mocha packing winds of up to 175 kph (109 miles) barrelled towards the coasts of eastern Bangladesh and Myanmar on May 13, threatening around a million Rohingya refugees and others living in low-lying areas.

After brewing in the Bay of Bengal for days, Cyclone Mocha is likely to intensify further and make landfall between Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh and Myanmar on Sunday, Bangladesh Meteorological Department said in a bulletin.

Cox’s Bazar, a southeastern border district, is where more than a million Rohingya refugees live, most having fled a military-led crackdown in Myanmar in 2017.

Mocha – classified as a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ – is expected to cut a path through Myanmar’s Rakhine and northwestern region, where six million people need humanitarian assistance and 1.2 million are displaced, the U.N. humanitarian office said.

Since a junta seized power two years ago, Myanmar has been plunged into chaos and a resistance movement is fighting the military on multiple fronts after a bloody crackdown on protests.

A spokesperson for the Myanmar junta did not respond to a phone call.

“We are focusing on saving lives,” said Mohammad Shamsud Douza, a Bangladesh government official responsible for refugees. “People who are at risk of landslides will be evacuated.”

Thousands of trained community workers and volunteers had already been deployed, alongside medical and rescue personnel who are on stand-by, he said.
