Same-Sex Marriage hearing: Ahead of the hearing, the Centre filed an affidavit in the apex court, saying that the extension of the concept of marriage beyond heterosexual union is “tantamount to creating a new social institution”. The government said the petitioners, by demanding same-sex marriage rights, were advancing “mere urban elitist views for the purpose of social acceptance.”
New Delhi: The Supreme Court will on Tuesday hear a batch of pleas seeking legal validation of same-sex marriages. The top court has constituted a five-judge Constitution bench to hear the matter.
The bench comprises Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli and PS Narasimha will begin hearing the petitions on Tuesday.
The Centre told the Supreme Court that same-sex marriage is an “urban elitist concept” far removed from the social ethos of the country. The government said that the petitions have “far-reaching implications” and do not represent the view of the “entire population” of the nation.
