SPICE Girl Mel B has hailed today’s launch of lifeline payments for women fleeing from abusive partners.

She said the £300,000 fund, set up following a Sun campaign, would be a life-saver.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman last month announced the pot in a pilot scheme to help women in England and Wales.

From today, abuse survivors can apply for £250 cash or voucher payments — £500 if they have children — through the charity Women’s Aid.

Mel, 47, said the cash was the “difference between life and death” for many women.

She added: “Today is a great day — our voices have been heard.

Thank you so much to the readers of The Sun for backing this important campaign.”

The fund can be be used to help with essentials such as food, nappies, clothes or even rent.

Ministers hope it will be extended if it is seen to work.

Farah Nazeer, chief executive of Women’s Aid, said: “This fund will save lives.

Sarah Dines, Minister for Safeguarding, said: “Supporting victims and survivors of domestic abuse is a key priority for this government.
