The International Day of Happiness, also called the World Happiness Day, is celebrated around the world on March 20 every year.
Recognising the fundamental human goal, the UN General Assembly has called for a “more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples.”
On July 12, 2012, the UNGA proclaimed March 20 as the International Day of Happiness in its resolution 66/281. The UN General Assembly recognises the relevance of happiness and well-being as “universal goals and aspirations” in people’s lives.
To mark the occasion, the World Happiness Report is released every year on this day.
Here’s a look at the top 10 happiest countries in the world:
1. Finland
In the World Happiness Report 2023, Finland was announced as the happiest country in the world for the sixth year in a row. From its natural beauty and social welfare system to work-life balance and strong sense of community, there are several factors that contribute to the country’s happiness rankings.
2. Denmark
For the past few years, Denmark has always been ranked among the top three happiest countries in the world. The country reportedly puts a lot of emphasis on the well-being of its citizens. It was recond second in the last year’s World Happiness Report.
3. Iceland
Iceland, an island country in the Europe, rounds off the top three in the report. The sparsely populated country houses some of the happiest in the world, thanks to its attitude towards relying on others. In Iceland, 98% people believe they know someone who they can rely on at the time of need, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
4. Israel
Last year, Israel was ranked fourth on the list, up from its ninth position the previous year. However, the country is currently facing a major conflict with the Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The conflict between the two sides started in October last year.
