Govt to Dissolve Colonial Era Cantonment Board System; Civil Areas To Be Handed Over to Municipal Bodies

In a major decision by the Centre, the government has decided to dissolve all 62 army cantonment boards in the country thereby discontinuing the colonial era cantonment system.
The government has also decided to hand over civilian areas under cantonment to local municipal bodies. While the army areas in the cantonment will be turned into military stations. The country currently has 62 cantonment boards.

In the beginning, the exercise to disband cantonment board will start from Himachal Pradesh’s Yol cantonment. This cantonment will soon be converted to military station and other will follow gradually.

The decision has been made in an attempt to decolonise the entire system of cantonment board system which was prevalent under British rule in India.
