Four killed and 16 injured after restaurant collapse on Majorca beach

Four people have been killed and 16 injured after a building collapsed on a beach in Majorca – with people still believed to be trapped inside.

The roof of the two-storey Medusa Beach Club in Palma collapsed at about 8.30pm local time.

Seven people were “very seriously” injured and nine were seriously injured, emergency services said on X.

Palma, Majorca’s capital, is an area popular with tourists.

Firefighters were seen removing people from the building, with some being taken out on stretchers as ambulances waited outside.

Footage posted on social media showed crowds gathered outside the restaurant as emergency services went through wreckage.

A local police spokesperson told Spanish radio station RNE: “The terrace has come down, probably due to excessive
weight.”

But he added that the cause is still being investigated.

Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, said he was monitoring the situation closely and his government would be ready to deploy “all the means and personnel that are necessary”.

He added: “I want to send my condolences to to the families of the deceased and my wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured.”

Marga Prohens, President of the Balearic Islands, said she was “shocked” to hear of the building collapse.

“All my affection and warmth to the families of the four people who lost their lives in this tragic incident and wishing the recovery of all the injured,” she said.
