The Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP government in Haryana landed in crisis after three Independent MLAs on Tuesday withdrew their support and announced they would campaign for the Congress party in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

The 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana are going to polls in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 25.

The three MLAs — Sombir Sangwan, Randhir Gollen and Dharampal Gonder— wrote to Haryana governor Bandaru Dattatreya, stating they were withdrawing their support to the Saini-led government.

HOW NUMBERS STACK IN HARYANA ASSEMBLY AFTER 3 INDEPENDENTS WITHDRAW SUPPORT?

  • Following Tuesday’s development, the BJP now has 40 MLAs in the 90-member Haryana Assembly.
  • BJP also has the support of two other independent MLAs – Nayan Pal Rawat from Prithla and Rakesh Daulatabad from Badshahpur and Haryana Lokhit party’s Gopal Kanda.
  • With a total of 43 MLAs, the BJP is short of two from the halfway mark of 45.
  • BJP, however, claims the unofficial support of 4-5 JJP MLAs saying it is actually at 47 and safe.
  • The JJP MLAs haven’t announced support due to anti-defection law.
  • On the other hand, the Congress has 30 MLAs, BJP’s former ally JJP has 10 MLAs and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) has one.
  • Another independent MLA Balraj Kundu from Meham, is yet to make his position clear.

CRISIS FOR NAYAB SINGH SAINI-LED BJP GOVERNMENT IN HARYANA?

The last No-confidence motion was brought in March 2024, wherein the Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP government had won the floor test by a voice note.

Since a gap of six months is needed before the next No-confidence motion can take place, the BJP denies any crisis to the present government.

Haryana Assembly elections are scheduled for October-November this year.
