Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese, on Tuesday announced the renaming of Harris Park, a suburb in Sydney, as ‘Little India’.

The announcement was made by Albanese as he welcomed PM Modi at a community event in Sydney. PM Modi is currently in Australia on a three-day visit.

Harris Park, located in Parramatta, is home to a large Indian community. It is a well-known destination for Indian cuisines and several Indian-owned businesses and shops. Earlier, it was informally called ‘Little India’.

PM Modi and his Australian counterpart also laid the foundation stone of the ‘Little India’ gateway at the event at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. The gateway will be built in Harris Park to mark the friendship between the two countries and the contribution of the Indian diaspora in Australia.

PM Modi thanked Albanese for this special gesture at the event and later tweeted, “I had the opportunity to welcome the Prime Minister @AlboMP ji on the Indian soil in Ahmedabad. Today he joined me in unveiling the foundation stone of ‘Little India’ here.”

At the community event, PM Modi also said he wanted to visit an Indian sweets shop in Harris Park with his Australian counterpart.
