Anjali-Sufi call off wedding, take down gift registry after backlash

Anjali Chakra and Sufi Malik announced their breakup weeks before their wedding

Anjali Chakra and Sufi Malik were accused by a section of the internet of scamming their followers by demanding wedding gifts even after calling off their wedding. Anjali, one half of the Instagram-famous former-couple, has now issued a clarification saying their wedding gift registry was only meant for guests and never shared online with their Instagram followers.

Anjali Chakra and Sufi Malik are a US-based same-sex couple — of Indian and Pakistani origin respectively — who rose to social media fame around five years ago. The couple announced their breakup earlier this week, citing infidelity on Sufi’s part. News of the breakup came as a shock to the couple’s followers as it happened just weeks before they were due to tie the knot.

Soon after the announcement, some eagle-eyed social media users noticed that Anjali and Sufi had registered themselves on a wedding gift website.

In some countries, a wedding registry is a service provided by a website that allows an engaged couple to list the gifts that they want from guests. This system prevents the couple from receiving unwanted or duplicate gifts.

In Anjali and Sufi’s case, the couple registered themselves on Zola and asked guests to contribute to their honeymoon fund, among other things. When social media users noticed the registry was still up despite the wedding having been called off, they accused the influencers of scamming their guests.
