Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Manipur to assess the situation and meet the state’s officials, community leaders, and top army officials. Shah will stay for the next few days and hold several rounds of security meetings to ensure peace in the violence-hit northeastern state. Fresh violence hit the region just before his arrival, killing five people, including a police officer. Following the violence on May 3, the Chief Minister revealed that 40 terrorists had been shot dead in the state.

Home Minister Amit Shah reached violence-hit Manipur Monday late at night to take stock of the situation. He met the state’s chief minister N Biren Singh’s council of ministers and Governor Anusuiya Uikey. Mr Shah will continue a series of meetings today as well as he looks to bring peace back to the violence-torn northeastern state. The Home Minister is likely to stay for the next few days in Manipur and meet all the stakeholders — top army officials, civil society organisations and influential community leaders.

Manipur has been witnessing ethnic violence for over a month now. The violence broke out in Manipur on May 3 following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ in the 10 hill districts protesting against the demand by Meitei community seeking Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Amit Shah In Manipur: Latest Developments

  1. Amit Shah on Monday chaired a meeting with Manipur CM N Biren Singh and ministers of the state, senior leaders, and officials to assess the situation and plan further steps to restore normalcy in the region.
  2. Shah, who is on a four-day long trip to Manipur also held a meeting in the presence of Union Minister for State Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, and Intelligence Bureau chief Tapan Deka among other officials concerned in the state as well as the Centre.
  3. Just ahead of Amit Shah’s arrival in Manipur, fresh violence hit the northeastern on Sunday.
  4. The Home Minister will hold several rounds of security meetings with top security officials and other stakeholders.
  5. On Sunday, at least five people, including a policeman, were killed and 12 others injured after fresh violence.
  6. The Home Minister may visit some of the districts populated by both Meities and Kuki tribals, who have been in conflict since May 3.
