At least five people, including four kids, drowned in the water body after the Bhushi dam overflowed due to incessant rain in Maharashtra’s Lonavala on Sunday.
The incident happened at 1:30pm, following which search and rescue teams rushed to the spot.
“2 bodies have been recovered. Search and rescue operations are underway. All five people are from one family belonging to Pune Sayyed Nagar,” Pune SP Pankaj Deshmukh said.
“We have recovered the bodies of a 40-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl. Two 6-year-old girls and a 4-year-old boy are missing in the incident. It seems they are part of a family and slipped into a waterfall some two kilometres away from Bhushi Dam and drowned at the reservoir downstream,” Deshmukh was quoted by PTI as saying.
Later in the day, one more body was recovered before the search and rescue operations were halted, Pune rural police said. The search operations will resume on Monday.
