Legendary heavyweight Mike Tyson will get back in the ring aged 57 to take on Jake Paul live on Netflix with the rules of the bout now being revealed.
Jake Paul’s upcoming controversial boxing bout with Mike Tyson is reportedly set to be fought with headguards and a whopping 18oz gloves, Derek Chisora has revealed. Tyson is set to come out of retirement for a one-off bout against YouTuber-turned-Boxer Paul, with a fight to be streamed on Netflix with both men set to receive handsome paydays.
No further details have yet been released on the July 20 bout at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium, where they expect over 80,000 to attend to see the spectacle. However, British heavyweight Chisora has claimed that he knows what rules will be put in place for the bout, and has brandished them as a “f****** joke”.
He told reporter Radio Rahim: “I know for a fact they are using 18oz gloves and headguards – if I’m not mistaken. I think so. So we’re watching a sparring match. It’s a f****** joke. You think I’m paying to watch that?”
Boxers usually fight with 8 or 10oz gloves, while sparring with 14oz gloves to prepare for their bouts. While the gloves are heavier, they are filled with much more padding, taking significant power out of the blows so that fighters are not injured in training.
The use of headgear strongly suggests that this will indeed be an amateur bout rather than a professional, with Tyson unlikely to be sanctioned as a professional due to being 58 years old at the time of fighting.
No specific details have yet been released by Netflix or either fighter ahead of the July 20 bout. Paul has a 9-1 record in professional boxing, with his only loss coming to Tommy Fury last year.
