A team of CBI sleuths reached Bhabani Bhawan, which is the West Bengal Police Headquarter, to take custody of Shahjahan in connection with the attack on Enforcement Directorate officers in Sandeshkhali on January 5.
The West Bengal government refused to hand over the custody of suspended Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan to the CBI despite a Calcutta High Court order on Tuesday.
A team of CBI sleuths reached Bhabani Bhawan, which is the West Bengal Police Headquarters, to take custody of Shahjahan.
However, they returned without the suspended Trinamool leader.
Earlier in the day, a division bench of Calcutta High Court ordered the West Bengal government to hand over Sheikh Shahjahan to the CBI in connection with the attack on Enforcement Directorate officers in Sandeshkhali on January 5.
The court underscored that the state police “underplayed the entire situation” as Shahjahan was absconding for over 50 days before being arrested on February 29.
Following this, the West Bengal government moved the Supreme Court to challenge the High Court’s order to transfer the probe from state police to the CBI.
Several members of the Enforcement Directorate were injured after their team was attacked by a mob in Sandeshkhali on January 5.
The attack happened when the ED officers went to raid Sheikh Shahjahan’s house in connection with the alleged multi-crore ration distribution scam.
