Nationwide truckers protesting against the hit-and-run law were urged to end their protest and resume work immediately.
In a major relief, truck drivers across India have called off their strike after the Centre’s assurance that there will be a discussion on the new hit-and-run law. On Tuesday, truckers’ body All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) said the government has assured that new laws concerning hit-and-run cases will be implemented after discussion with its members and urged truck drivers to call off their strike, news agency PTI reported.
“The Government of India has taken cognizance of the concerns of truckers regarding the provision of 10 years imprisonment and fine, under Section 106 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and held detailed discussion with the representatives of the All India Motor Transport Congress today.,” the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a press release.
During the meeting, the Home Secretary informed the office bearers of the AIMTC that these new laws and provisions have not yet come into force. “The government wants to point out that these new laws and provisions have not yet come into force. We would also like to point out that the decision to invoke Section 106 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita will be taken only after consultation with theAll India Motor Transport Congress. We appeal to All India Motor Transport Congress and all the drivers to return to their respective jobs.,” the ministry added.
