The 15 Richest Counties in the U.S.

Upscale Enclaves

Americans’ incomes are on the rise though geographic disparities remain, figures from the U.S. Census Bureau show. Overall, the nation’s median household income was $80,610 in 2023, up from $77,540 the year prior, a report from the bureau says.

Some communities in the U.S. have comfortably exceeded those numbers in recent years, other census data indicates. The latest five-year American Community Survey estimates – which are “period” estimates reflecting data collected from 2019-2023 – show a total of 149 counties or county equivalents in the U.S. had median household incomes that were above $100,000.

Of the 15 counties with the highest incomes, five are located near the nation’s capital in Virginia or Maryland. Four of the richest counties are in California – all in the San Francisco Bay Area – while the rest are scattered across a handful of states.
