As the diplomatic stand-off between India and Canada continues, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday said Ottawa is not looking to escalate the situation with India.

Trudeau, who created a diplomatic storm after he linked the Government of India with the killing of Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, said Canada will responsibly and constructively with New Delhi.

“Canada is not looking to escalate the situation with India, will continue to engage responsibly and constructively with New Delhi. We want to be on the ground in India to help the Canadian families there,” Reuters quoted Trudeau as saying.

The relations between both the countries are seeing an all-time low after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged, in his Parliament, the involvement of a “foreign agent” in the killing of Khalistan separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. He even claimed that he had intelligence inputs and evidence that the Indian government could be behind Nijjar’s death.

Nijjar was killed by unidentified gunmen outside a Gurdwara in Surrey, Canada, on June 18. He was the chief of banned Khalistan Tiger Force, and was designated a terrorist by the Indian government under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in 2020. Interpol had also issued red corner notice against him quite a few times, the first one being in 2016.

India Asks Canada to Recall Its Diplomatic Staff: Govt Sources

After suspending visa processes for Canadians, New Delhi wants Ottawa to recall more than two dozen of its diplomats from India, according to top government sources.

Top government sources also said Canada cannot be “given free hand” as their non-cooperation in terror investigations is one of the main reasons why New Delhi is heading towards taking the decision to downsize Canada’s diplomatic presence in India. “Their top officials (Canada’s) come and meet and promise, but don’t deliver.”

Legal Language Must Be Simplified; Common Man Should Feel Law Is His Own : Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered an address at the inauguration of the Bar Council of India International Lawyers’ Conference 2023. The two-day international conference features inaugral ceremony, ten technical sessions aimed at knowledge sharing, and a valedictory session. The theme of the conference is, ‘Emerging challenges in Justice Delivery System’.

In his address, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of simplifying legal language and enhancing accessibility to justice for the common man. Highlighting the often-overlooked aspect of language and simplicity in law, he pointed out that there are two ways of presenting laws: one by the language familiar to legal professionals and another by the language understood by the common man. He stressed the importance of making the law accessible and relatable to every citizen so that they feel a sense of ownership over it.

The Prime Minister underscored the critical role that the language of laws plays in making justice accessible to all. He noted that in the past, legal drafting was overly complex, which created barriers for the common man. He expressed the government’s commitment to finding solutions to simplify the language used in laws. He also commended Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud for the initiative to provide operative parts of judgments in a language the litigant can understand.

Justin Trudeau ‘Declined’ Offer to Return Home on Air India One Flight, ‘Decided to Wait’ for Canadian Plane

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was reportedly offered the service of Air India One by New Delhi. However, the Canadian side “declined” the offer and decided to wait for the replacement aircraft.

The prime minister and his delegation, who were to leave the national capital after the G20 summit on Sunday, were stranded here due to technical issues with their aircraft. They finally flew out on Tuesday afternoon after another Canadian plane arrived for him.

News agency ANI later on Tuesday quoted its sources as saying that Trudeau had rejected Air India One services. The report came at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed strong concerns about continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada to his Canadian counterpart on the sidelines of G20 Summit.

“The PM conveyed our strong concerns about continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada. They are promoting secessionism and inciting violence against Indian diplomats, damaging diplomatic premises, and threatening the Indian community in Canada and their places of worship,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

In July, India summoned the Canadian envoy and issued a demarche over the increasing activities by pro-Khalistani elements in Canada, days after posters featuring names of India’s senior diplomats serving in Canada featured in some posters in certain areas in that country.

In June, a video emerged on social media that showed a float depicting the assassination of Indira Gandhi. It was reportedly part of a parade that was organised by some Khalistani elements in Brampton.

Asked about India’s concerns over the increasing activities of the Khalistani elements in Canada, Trudeau said at a press conference that his country will always defend freedom of peaceful protest but at the same time asserted that it will always prevent violence and push back against hatred.

“Canada will always defend freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, and freedom of peaceful protest and it is extremely important to us,” he said.

“At the same time, we are always there to prevent violence and to push back against hatred. I think on the issue of the community, it is important to remember that the actions of the few do not represent the entire community or Canada,” Trudeau said.

‘Poor And Vulnerable Suffer The Most’: PM on Freebie Culture, Cautions Against ‘Irresponsible’ Financial Policies

With Assembly Polls and Lok Sabha Elections 2024 around the corner, discussion and criticism on freebie politics are again on the fore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the poor and vulnerable classes suffer the most due to the irresponsible financial policies of political parties.

“The poorest and most vulnerable suffer the most from irresponsible financial policies and populism,” said PM Modi in an exclusive interview with PTI adding that the irresponsible financial policies and populism may give short-term political results but extract great social, and economic prices in the long term.

PM Modi also discussed India’s flourishing economic status and the praises its financial policies are earning on a global stage and assured that India would be a developed nation by 2047.

“India’s economic growth is a “natural by-product” of the nine-year-old government’s political stability. We will be a developed nation by 2047 with “corruption, casteism and communalism” having no place in our national life,” PM Modi told PTI.

PM Modi also emphasised that while most advanced economies are facing an economic slowdown, chronic shortages, high inflation, and ageing populations, the Indian economy is acknowledged to be the fastest-growing large economy with the largest youth population.

“For a long time in world history, India was one of the top economies of the world. Later, due to the impact of colonisation of various kinds, our global footprint was reduced,” he said.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that if his party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) wins the next general elections, then Nawaz Sharif will become the next premier of the country, reported the news agency PTI. Notably, Nawaz Sharif has been living in self-imposed exile in London since 2019. PM Shehbaz said that his elder brother Nawaz will return to the country in the next few weeks. He said this while speaking on a Geo News programme on Sunday.

Shehbaz said the three-time former prime minister would face the law once he returns to Pakistan. He added that Nawaz was sent abroad on medical grounds on the basis of a medical report which was prepared on the directives of former PM Imran Khan, the agency reported.

The top court of Pakistan had disqualified Nawaz Sharif in 2017. The next year, Nawaz became ineligible to hold public office for life after the Supreme Court verdict in the Panama Papers case. Notably, he was serving a seven-year jail term in the Al-Azizia Mills corruption case when he left for London on a four-week bail, the agency stated. PTI further reported that the Lahore High Court had given the former PM bail on medical grounds.

According to PTI, Shehbaz Sharif said that a notification of the dissolution of the National Assembly will be sent to President Arif Alvi a few days ahead of the completion of the tenure at 12 midnight on August 12. The PML-N party president maintained that the party would try its best to make seat adjustments with allied parties in the general elections.
