Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been ruling the roost in Saudi Arabia, where he is part of Al Nassr. In the ongoing Arabian Club Champions Cup, Ronaldo is currently the highest goal-scorer, as his Al Nassr side will take on fellow Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal in the final later on Saturday. A global football icon, Ronaldo’s arrival at Saudi Arabia proved influential as many leadng names in footballing world including current Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema and Sadio Mane followed the Portuguese forward.

Just like everywhere else around the world, Ronaldo enjoys a massive fan-base in Saudi Arabia too; and in the ongoing Champions Cup, the Al Nassr forward is popular among players from rival clubs as well. During the side’s semi-final against Iraq-based club Al Shorta, a player from the side – Ahmed Zero – approached Ronaldo for a picture. While the Portgual star obliged, Ahmed’s caption for the photo didn’t sit well with many Ronaldo fans on social media.

The Iraq player, taking to his official Instagram account, wrote, “With the second best player in history.”

Interestingly, the post was filled with comments glorifying Lionel Messi – Ronaldo’s long-time rival – even as Ahmed didn’t clarify who he believes is the best in the world. Months after Ronaldo’s switch to Saudi Pro League, Messi also left Europe to join Inter Miami in Major League Soccer in the United States. The Argentinian World Cup-winner made a prolific start to his US stint, scoring 8 goals in his first five appearances for the side.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored again for Al Nassr as it beat Al Shorta to enter the final of the Arab Club Championship Cup 2023, at the Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Stadium on Wednesday.

Al Nassr was in control for most of the game, but it failed to make the most of its dominance in the game.

Early in the first half, the Saudi Pro League side thought it had taken the lead when Ronaldo latched on to a through ball and slotted it past the goalkeeper, only for the referee to call it back for an offside.

Al Shorta recovered to keep the score-line intact until the half-time, with some resolute defence.

But, Al Nassr started the second half on full tilt. Finally, the pressure gave way to a mistake leading to the match-winning goal.

Watch: “Best In The World” – Lionel Messi Hat-Trick Leaves Fans In Frenzy

Argentina captain Lionel Messi on Tuesday scored his 100th international goal for the reigning world champions as they romped to a 7-0 friendly win over outclassed Curacao. Seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi opened the scoring against the Caribbean island minnows on 20 minutes in Santiago del Estero. It came 17 years after he opened his Argentina account in a 3-2 defeat to Croatia in March 2006. The 35-year-old soon added another just after the half-hour mark to make it 3-0, and then completed his hat-trick on 37 minutes with the fifth as Argentina toyed with their overmatched opponents. It was his seventh hat-trick for the national team.

“You cannot describe Messi in words,” said fellow goalscorer Nicolas Gonzalez.

“He’s the best in the world and he shows it match after match, day after day. Every time he touches the ball, he makes you smile.”

Messi came into the game not just as his country’s all-time record goalscorer, but with more goals than the next two top marksmen — Gabriel Batistuta on 56 and Sergio Aguero with 41 — put together.

This was Argentina’s second match since winning the World Cup in dramatic style against France in Qatar in December — triumphing 4-2 on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw — and it was always going to be about Messi reaching 100 goals.

Now with 102, he remains third in the all-time list, behind great rival Cristiano Ronaldo (122) of Portugal and Iran’s Ali Daei (109).

Messi had come up short on Thursday last week when he notched his 99th goal for the Albiceleste as Argentina toiled in their homecoming celebration match against Panama.

The Central Americans had held out until the 78th minute before 21-year-old MLS sensation Thiago Almada broke their resistence.

Messi then scored direct from a free-kick a minute from time — his 800th goal in professional football — in front of 83,000 delirious fans in Buenos Aires.

Cristiano Ronaldo becomes top men’s goalscorer in football history

Cristiano Ronaldo became the all-time leading men’s goalscorer in football history as his brilliant hat-trick inspired Manchester United’s 3-2 win against Tottenham, while Liverpool closed the gap on Premier League leaders Manchester City with a 2-0 victory at Brighton on Saturday.

Ronaldo had netted just once in his previous 10 games amid speculation that the Portugal striker was considering his future after less than a season of his second spell with United.

The 37-year-old’s commitment was questioned when he reportedly jetted to Portugal last weekend rather than watch his team after being ruled out of their 4-1 defeat at Manchester City with a hip injury.

Even United interim boss Ralf Rangnick conceded he did not know if Ronaldo was happy at the club.

But Ronaldo proved his commitment to the United cause with a superb display to single-handedly dispatch Tottenham at Old Trafford.
