A 21-year-old construction worker was shot dead by two brothers at a village in Uttar Pradesh after they suspected him to be a “child lifter”.
The incident occurred in Parauli when the victim, Mohd Shahrukh, a resident of Chhapar in Muzaffarnagar district, accompanied by five other workers on three bikes were on their way back home from Saharanpur’s Miragpur village. SP (rural) Suraj Rai said the group of labourers were passing through Parauli on Wednesday when a few villagers, including Dharmveer Singh (47) and Ompal Singh (42), “mistook them for criminals”. “Dharmveer shot from a country-made pistol which struck Shahrukh.
He died on the spot. Others with Shahrukh ran for their lives and somehow managed to flee the village. The victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem and a report is awaited,” the SP said on Friday. “A case has been registered against Dharmveer and his brother Ompal under IPC section 302 (murder) following a complaint by Shahrukh’s father Mohd Saleem,” the officer added. Investigation revealed that Dharmveer opened fire while Ompal assisted him.
A pistol and two blank cartridges were found on them. During questioning, Dharmveer told cops that he “panicked”. Both the accused have been arrested and sent to jail. There have been several such instances in the past week from across the state where individuals were mercilessly thrashed by mobs on the suspicion that they were “child lifters”. In almost all the cases, the suspects were subsequently handed over to the police.
