Google’s search engine could be set for an overhaul by 2025, according to CEO Sundar Pichai. During the New York Times DealBook Summit, Pichai hinted at a radical overhaul that will change the way users interact with the platform. “I think we are going to be able to tackle more complex questions than ever before,” he said, and users should expect visible changes towards the beginning of 2025. This announcement comes as the search giant ramps up its focus on artificial intelligence to stay ahead in competition with others in the tech space.

Pichai’s comments came just after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella earlier criticised Google as to having an unfair advantage in the race for AI. Answering Nadella’s comment, Pichai confidently pointed out that Google’s own in-house AI could potentially be better than all of their competitors, and who are heavily reliant on external partnerships. “I would love to do a side-by-side comparison of Microsoft’s own models and our models,” he quipped with a reference to Microsoft working with OpenAI.

The changes to Google Search build on this year’s AI-driven updates, which included features like AI-generated search summaries and enhanced video-based search using Google Lens. The company’s next major milestone is a substantial upgrade to its Gemini AI model, which is expected to enhance its competitive standing against rivals such as Microsoft, OpenAI, and emerging players like Perplexity.
