Shatrughan Sinha Wants Ban On Non-Vegetarian Food, Praises UCC In Uttarakhand

TMC MP Shatrughan Sinha on Tuesday said that non-vegetarian food items must be banned nationwide while acknowledging the regional differences in India that make implementing such a rule challenging.

He used this as an example to underscore the difficulties in enforcing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across the country. However, he praised the successful implementation of the common law in Uttarakhand.

“Not just beef, but non-veg food in general must be banned in the country. The governments have banned beef in many places, but in several areas, it’s still legal. People can eat it openly in the Northeast, but not in North India,” the TMC lawmaker said.

The rules which can be imposed in North India cannot be imposed in the Northeastern states, he added.

“In a similar way, there are many fine prints and loopholes in the UCC. An all-party meeting must be held before drafting UCC provisions,” Sinha remarked.

In a historic move, Uttarakhand became the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), effective from January 27.

The Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code Act, 2024, will streamline various personal laws, including those related to marriage, divorce, succession, and inheritance.

Gujarat Inches Closer To UCC

Sinha’s remark came as Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Tuesday announced setting up a five-member panel to prepare the draft for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and make the law.

“A five-member committee under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai has been constituted,” he said while addressing a press conference.
