Sanjay Nirupam, a former Member of Parliament, was expelled from the Congress for six years after he hit out at his party leadership amid seat-sharing talks with Shiv Sena (UBT) for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Former Mumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam was expelled from the party’s primary membership on Wednesday for six years for ‘indiscipline’ and ‘anti-party statements’.
“Taking note of the complaints of indiscipline and anti-party statements, the Congress president has approved the expulsion of Sanjay Nirupam from the party for a period of six years with immediate effect,” a letter issued by Congress general secretary KC Venugopal stated.
The former MP, who had represented both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, was expelled from the Congress days after he hit out at his party leadership amid seat-sharing talks with Shiv Sena (UBT) for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
A showdown of sorts was seen earlier in the day after the Maharashtra unit of Congress passed a resolution seeking the expulsion of Nirupam and sent it to the party’s high command in Delhi. His name was also dropped from the party’s list of star campaigners.
In response, the former MP launched a sharp attack, saying since the party is experiencing a “serious financial crisis”, it should utilise stationery and energy to save itself.
“It (Congress) should utilise the stationery and energy to save itself, as the party is experiencing a serious financial crisis. The time frame I had given to the party ends today. I will spell out my next course of action tomorrow,” he tweeted.
